The Osceola Magic have acquired the returning player rights to Aamir Simms from the Rip City Remix in exchange for returning player rights to Drake Jeffries, the team announced today. Osceola also recently acquired the returning player rights to Mac McClung from the Delaware Blue Coats in exchange for returning player rights to Jeff Dowtin and a second-round pick in the 2024 NBA G League Player Draft.
Simms was acquired by Rip City in the 2023-24 NBA G League Expansion Draft. Simms most recently played for the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 NBA Summer League.
Simms (6-foot-8, 245 pounds) played in 23 games (16 starts) with the Westchester Knicks in the 2021-22 season, averaging 11.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 24.0 minutes per game, while shooting 39.4% from three-point range and 89.3% from the free throw line.&nbsp;
Simms played in 122 games (100 starts) in four seasons at Clemson University (2017-21), averaging 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. Simms was named to the All-Atlantic-Coast Conference Third-Team in 2020 and was named to the All-ACC Second-Team in 2022.
McClung (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) played in two games last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 12.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 20.5 minutes per game. He also appeared in 31 games (28 starts) with Delaware of the NBA G League, averaging 19.8 points, 5.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game, helping the Blue Coats capture the 2022-23 NBA G League championship. At NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, McClung won the Slam Dunk contest.
After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, McClung has played in four career NBA regular season games with the Chicago Bulls, L.A. Lakers and 76ers, averaging 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 16.3 minutes per game. He has also appeared in 58 career NBA G League outings (55 starts) with South Bay, Windy City and Delaware, averaging 20.6 points, 6.1 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.14 steals in 31.1 minutes per game, while shooting 50.7% (425-838) from the floor, 42.7% (123-288) from three-point range and 85.4% (134-157) from the free throw line.
McClung played in 50 career games during two seasons (2018-20) at Georgetown University, averaging 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.06 steals in 26.6 minutes per game. During the 2018-19 season, he led all Big East freshmen in scoring and was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team. McClung also played in 29 games during one season (2020-21) at Texas Tech University, averaging 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 30.2 minutes per game.
The Orlando Magic's G League affilate recently relocated from Lakeland to Osceola (and they are based in Kissimmee).&nbsp;One of 31 teams in the NBA G League, the Magic recently won the 2021 NBA G League Finals. Last season, the Magic posted a 18-14 record, which was eighth-best in the G League.

Today, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced their continued partnership in hosting the fifth&nbsp;annual Top 50 Basketball Camp. The camp will take place July 27&ndash;29 at Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA. &nbsp; The best players from each conference will be featured at the camp in a model like the NBPA's Top 100 Camp. Players at the Top 50 Camp will participate in basketball skill training exercises and attend leadership and life development sessions off the court. &nbsp; "NBPA members have a true appreciation for HBCUs, and the Top 50 Camp is a great way for the NBPA to continue strengthening its connection with the HBCU community," said Purvis Short, the NBPA's Chief of Player Programs. "Our partnership with the SIAC and SWAC has given us a unique opportunity to host a productive learning experience for HBCU athletes to better themselves as men on and off the court." The camp also aims to cultivate and create coaching and talent pipelines for current and retired NBA players exploring the transition into careers in intercollegiate athletics. &nbsp; "The Southwestern Athletic Conference is elated to continue our partnership with the NBPA Top 50 Camp," said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland. "This partnership is an amazing opportunity for our student-athletes to participate in athletic and professional development initiatives that will positively impact them both on and off the court. NBPA, SIAC and SWAC to host 5th annual Top 50 Basketball Camp

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) &mdash; Kevin Durant scored 27 points and the Brooklyn Nets erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the short-handed Charlotte Hornets 98-94 on Saturday night, improving to 2-0 since Kyrie Irving&rsquo;s suspension.
Cam Thomas added 21 points for the Nets and Nic Claxton had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Terry Rozier returned from a seven-game absence and led Charlotte with 25 points on six 3-pointers. P.J. Washington and Kelly Oubre Jr. each had 18 points for the Hornets, who have lost four straight since beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
The Hornets outscored the Nets 17-6 to open the fourth quarter to take an 11-point lead and appeared ready to pull away.
Rozier knocked down 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, Nick Richards added a three-point play and Rozier made a free throw after Nic Claxton was assessed a technical foul for disputing a call.
But the Nets came storming back behind Durant and Thomas. They trimmed the lead to two on a corner 3 from Joe Harris, then tied the game when Thomas stole a pass at midcourt and was fouled on a layup attempt. He connected on both free throws with 2:39 remaining.
Thomas gave the Nets the lead on a drive before Washington knocked down a 3 from the top of the key to give Charlotte a 92-91 lead with about a minute to play.
But Durant took over from there.
The 12-time NBA All-Star made a big 3 from the right wing to give the Nets the lead for good and added a baseline jumper to push Brooklyn's lead to four.
Mason Plumlee got an offensive rebound off a tipped Rozier 3-pointer with 27 seconds left to cut the lead in half before Thomas knocked home two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 14 seconds left.
Rozier missed two 3s on the other end and the Nets (4-6) escaped with the win.
TIP-INS
Nets: Seth Curry returned to action while Ben Simmons was out for the fourth straight game with left knee soreness.
Hornets: Dennis Smith Jr., who has been filling in admirably at point guard in the absence of Rozier and LaMelo Ball, left the game in the first half with a sprained left ankle and did not return. Ball has missed nine games and Rozier was out seven with sprained ankles of their own.

In this fourth installment, Mat goes in-depth on one of the greatest shooters of all-time: Reggie Miller. He explains what made him different from the marksmen who came before him, with insights from his former coaches in Indiana &mdash; Dan Burke and Bob Ociepka &mdash; his former teammate Rik Smits and basketball analyst Mike Prada.

In his critically acclaimed, historical rendition of the NBA, "The Book of Basketball," The Ringer's Bill Simmons ranked NBA and Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller outside of the top 60 all-time:
&ldquo;Reggie Miller was the most overrated &lsquo;superstar&rsquo; of the past thirty years,&rdquo; Simmons opined.
To Simmons' credit, however, he later retracted this statement in the sequel podcast, "<a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/book-of-basketball-2-0/id1483525141?i=1000462435000">The Book of Basketball 2.0.</a>" Revising his previous comments, Simmons suggested that in today's game, Miller would indeed constitute superstar status.
But what if Miller would have been a superstar in any era? What if he was an elite scorer and playmaker in ways that we couldn&rsquo;t comprehend during his time? And what if he served as an inspiration to the most prolific dynasty of the NBA's pace-and-space era?
Let's find out.
WHAT MADE MILLER SPECIAL
As a child, Miller would regularly participate in 1-on-1 matchups against his older sister, Cheryl, who turned out to be one of the greatest women's basketball players of all-time prior to untimely injuries. (She's enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.)
Because of Cheryl's superior size and strength, Reggie going inside was a moot point.
&ldquo;One of the reasons I practiced shooting from the outside was that Cheryl used to block my shots when I drove to the hoop,&rdquo; Miller recalled in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Love-Being-Enemy-Reggie-Miller/dp/0684870398" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his autobiography</a>. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a bad feeling when your sister is knocking your best stuff into the rosebushes.&rdquo;
To defeat his sibling, Miller needed to hone in on his perimeter game.&nbsp;
That's exactly what he did.
Miller endured his sister&rsquo;s challenges and triumphed to become one of the premier shooters the NBA had ever seen. According to Cerebro Sports' Three-Point Efficiency metric (a shooting metric that combines three-point volume and efficiency to show the most lethal shooters), Miller finished in the 97th percentile or higher in all but one year from 1988 to 2004.
(The 2002-03 campaign was the exception, where he finished in the 94th percentile).

Even more impressive is how he earned his standing in this data set. Unlike many of the great shooters of his time &mdash; who made their mark primarily off standstill catch-and-shoot opportunities &mdash; a majority of Miller&rsquo;s triples came while he was circling the half-court at top speed.
And again, much like his pickup contests growing up, this strategy was rooted in necessity.
&ldquo;The chances for spot-up [threes] weren&rsquo;t really there,&rdquo; said Dan Burke, Miller&rsquo;s former coach in Indiana and now an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers. &ldquo;You have to have a real big, key player [you&rsquo;re playing off of] to get spot-ups.&rdquo;
To back Burke's words, think of one of the other notable three-point shooters of that time: Dan Majerle. Throughout his time in Phoenix and Miami, Majerle was gifted with potent penetrators like Kevin Johnson and Tim Hardaway, who could both consistently <a href="https://streamable.com/wd17v5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">break down a defense and get two feet in the paint</a>.
Meanwhile, Miller&rsquo;s most accomplished backcourt mate, Mark Jackson, was more of a post facilitator than a downhill threat.
Instead, Miller achieved sage status in the art of movement shooting. And for those following along at home, his technique can be divided into <a href="https://youtu.be/tv3EyzBuRb4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three keys</a>.
Key 1: Set up the Defender
Miller was an avid participant in basketball grappling &mdash; the practice of using physicality to manipulate and gain separation from your defender.
&ldquo;[Miller] embraced contact and sometimes got the feel of a guy so [he] could push off him and get open,&rdquo; Burke said.
The cunning sharpshooter also deployed harsh cuts and abrupt changes in speed to further decrease the likelihood that his opponent could shadow his movements.
&ldquo;When you watch him, it wasn&rsquo;t always the same speed,&rdquo; Burke continued. &ldquo;He changed speeds. He&rsquo;d stop and go.&rdquo;

Key 2: Read the Screen
Once he gained a step, Miller could interpret his optimal route-running path based on the direction his defender was chasing him. If his defender trailed outside the screen, Miller would juke inwards. If his defender rushed from the inside, Miller would retreat outside.
Miller's astute ability in this regard was largely based upon the continuity he achieved with his screen-setting bigs &mdash; Antonio Davis, Dale Davis and Rik Smits.
&ldquo;We would run through our sets almost every practice,&rdquo; Smits recalled to Basketball News. &ldquo;[A lot] of dummy offenses. Just run, run, run. We really concentrated on getting good screens set just to take full advantage of everything [Miller brought to the table].&rdquo;
"Reggie would talk to those bigs too," Burke added. "'Just stand there, I&rsquo;ll use you.'&rdquo;
Key 3: Footwork
Miller boasted balletic footwork, akin to that of a peak-<a href="https://youtu.be/Ye7xMqYqAbA">Torture Chamber Kevin McHale</a>, able to stop and pop effortlessly regardless of his travel velocity and angle.
&ldquo;[Typically], if you are right-handed, you want to come off [a pindown screen] going to your left so that your shoulder is closer to the rim,&rdquo; Burke said. &ldquo;It didn&rsquo;t matter with Reggie. He could come with his right hand or with his left hand.&rdquo;
Miller's ambidexterity is a testament to his impeccable footwork. The direction didn't matter because his stride was sound both ways. And his ability to maintain balance during these sequences is even more impressive when you consider the defensive physicality that was accepted during his era.
&ldquo;Every time a guy like Reggie cut through the lane, the goal was to smack him. We used to say, &lsquo;Pinball him,&rsquo;" Burke recalled.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The league allows no &lsquo;impeding&rsquo; cutters now. There was much more holding then. But Reggie would stay locked and still get a rhythm jumper.&rdquo;

ON-COURT PRODUCTION
Miller&rsquo;s shooting served as a double-edged sword for his reputation. On one end, he was revered as one of the game&rsquo;s top snipers. On the other, he&rsquo;d been pigeonholed into a singular role on the floor.
However, Miller was more than a marksman. He was a three-level scorer who utilized the <a href="https://streamable.com/ykdkx5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">triple-threat</a> position to score from the mid-range and at the rim.
&ldquo;One thing Reggie worked on, we used to call it &lsquo;Pete Newell,&rsquo;" Burke explained. &ldquo;Pete Newell was an old coach who used to have a big-man camp. His whole thing was: Jab, catch, create space. If the guy doesn&rsquo;t honor your jab, you go by him. If he backs up, you raise up and shoot it.
&ldquo;It was a series. And [Reggie] really worked on it.&rdquo;
This combination of three-level scoring and high conversion rates from the most efficient spots on the floor made Miller arguably the best backcourt scorer of the 1990s not named Michael Jordan.

To compare the two, from 1989 to 1999, Miller tallied nine seasons where he ranked in the 90th percentile in both scoring volume and efficiency, while Jordan only touted two such seasons.&nbsp;
Additionally, Miller&rsquo;s unpredictable tendencies coming off screens and counter-laden arsenal made him one of the few stars to rarely improve his volume and efficiency during postseason play.
For instance, in 1994-95, Miller averaged 23.9 points per 75 possessions on 62.0% True Shooting. In the playoffs, those averages ballooned to 28.0 points and 63.2% True Shooting, respectively.&nbsp;
To show how rare that is, there was an inverse trend of that with John Stockton and Mitch Richmond &mdash; two guards who were (<a href="https://twitter.com/matissa15/status/1556676428426612738?s=20&amp;t=haKXS_VAVIAeIw7hLdSqkQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrongfully?</a>) regularly awarded All-NBA selections over Miller.&nbsp;
WEAVING THE THREAD
The first guard to function as an off-ball superstar was John Havlicek. When "Hondo" wasn&rsquo;t ripping and running in transition, he was usually <a href="https://streamable.com/uzgwhw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">curling off screens</a> for leaning mid-range jumpers.
A post-three-point line precursor to Miller was Joe Dumars (who coincidentally probably also took some of his All-NBA accolades). Another one of Miller&rsquo;s coaches in Indiana, Dick Versace, spent time as an assistant on the Detroit Pistons before becoming the head coach of the Pacers in 1988.
&ldquo;Joe Dumars had that knack for getting free off screens,&rdquo; said Bob Ociepka, an assistant on Versace's staff in Indiana and a 23-year NBA coach. &ldquo;Coach Versace, coming from [Detroit], ran a lot of the things Chuck Daly did &mdash; [like Dumars] coming off those staggered screens from the baseline.&rdquo;
Miller expressed a great admiration toward Dumars, even going as far as to call him the "unsung MVP of Dream Team II" in his book.
Dale Ellis was another <a href="https://twitter.com/matissa15/status/1555600444763869186?s=20&amp;t=EBeojEhLms-WUc2csgmNdA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sniper</a> from that generation who cratered defenses using floppy action &mdash; a play in which a player, positioned under the basket, can choose whether to cut off a single screen to one side or a double screen to the other, per Basketball Dictionary.
However, because of the typical constraints placed on 2-guards at the time, neither Dumars nor Ellis could fully leverage their shooting prowess to their advantage.
&ldquo;[In that era], the shooting guard was supposed to be Jordan-esque,&rdquo; said Mike Prada, editor at The Athletic and "Spaced Out" <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Spaced-Out-Three-Point-Revolution-Everything/dp/1629378860/ref=asc_df_1629378860/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=564700905732&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=6603785140486578978&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9016969&amp;hvtargid=pla-1645726366795&amp;psc=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">author</a>. &ldquo;You were an all-around player, you got a lot of rebounds and assists, you went 1-on-1 a lot, you were explosive, you could dunk on people &mdash; sort of that Platonic Ideal.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Miller was different from those guards; he didn&rsquo;t possess the same ball-handling or rebounding acumen. He was an outlier who weaponized his extraordinary gift to buoy an offense almost entirely through his off-ball presence.
Notably, the Pacer legend pioneered a term deeply entrenched in today&rsquo;s basketball jargon: gravity.
Dangerous from deep, Miller made <a href="https://en.mimi.hu/basketball/double_down.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">doubling down</a> on his big-men teammates in the post a conversation killer. Teams would rather face guard him at the three-point line than send reinforcements to the interior, which opened up room for his low-post executioners to make decisions.

Smits expressed a great deal of gratitude for the space Miller provided him to operate.
&ldquo;I was glad he was on my team. I could tell you that,&rdquo; Smits laughed.&nbsp;
Miller&rsquo;s landscape-altering effect is felt when you look through the lens of historian Ben Taylor&rsquo;s passing and playmaking statistics.
For example, in 1993-94, Gary Payton finished in the 80th percentile in Taylor&rsquo;s Box Creation stat &mdash; a metric that estimates playmaking (per <a href="https://backpicks.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Backpicks.com</a>). Payton did this while simultaneously scoring in the 94th percentile in Passer Rating.
In the same season, despite only scoring in the 37th percentile in passing, Miller finished in the 77th percentile in playmaking.
Miller wasn&rsquo;t the on-ball initiator that Payton was, but this conveys that the former was still able to operate as a high-end creator thanks to the attention he garnered from his opponents.
&ldquo;The thing that Reggie Miller had that we didn&rsquo;t know how to identify back when he played &mdash; but now it&rsquo;s a no-brainer concept &mdash; is this idea of gravity,&rdquo; Prada said.
IMPACT ON TODAY'S GAME
In many circles, Ray Allen is often cited as the disciple who bears the most resemblance to Miller. Along with Allen, Richard Hamilton, JJ Redick and Kyle Korver have all played the part of "<a href="https://grantland.com/features/kyle-korver-nba-atlanta-hawks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offense unto themselves</a>" by utilizing their off-ball gravitational pull.
In the current NBA landscape, Miller&rsquo;s most obvious descendants share the same squad.
&ldquo;Two guys on the same team,&rdquo; Burke pointed out. "Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson."
The dynastic Golden State Warriors have become famous for pushing the boundaries of time and space by exploiting the shooting gravity their dynamic duo wields.&nbsp;
And, as fate would have it, Miller also once teamed up with a fellow gravity co-founder, Chris Mullin.&nbsp;
Mullin was arguably the closest comparison to Miller at the time, and together, the tandem caused wide-scale chaos and confusion &mdash; the likes of which the league would not see again until the Splash Brothers coalesced in the Bay Area nearly two decades later.

In both plays, the two pairs create a defensive breakdown simply by running past each other in the opposite direction.
Even more poetic, take a look at the Pacers&rsquo; opponent in the first clip. Who was a reserve on that team? None other than Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.
&ldquo;All of the stuff that the Warriors did in the early days with the Steph/Klay combo &mdash; the crazy, figure-eight-type stuff &mdash; was very much ripped right from the Pacers,&rdquo; Prada explained.
Golden State expanded on Miller&rsquo;s semi-contained havoc, turning half-court offensive sets into absolute anarchy.
Miller&rsquo;s movement authored a great deal of mayhem, more than anyone of his time, but he was still forced to rein it in a bit to accommodate the structure of his offense. Nowadays, engines like Curry and Thompson have the discretion to graze the terrain as they see fit.
&ldquo;[For Miller], his was set plays, so it was easier for teams to really dial in,&rdquo; Burke explained. &ldquo;Curry is more of a constant, built into a random system.&rdquo;
But it was still the audacious Miller who paved the way. He crawled so that the Golden State empire could walk.
&ldquo;He was this type of player that, in an era that did not have a blueprint for this style of play, he provided it,&rdquo; Prada concluded.&nbsp;
He's the player responsible for the outline that triggered a dynasty.

Hours before the 2022-23 league year began, one of the greatest players in NBA history dropped a bombshell.
Kevin Durant officially requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, signaling that massive changes are coming for the organization. It appears that Durant is done dealing with the sinking ship in Brooklyn, spearheaded by the melodrama consistently surrounding his fellow superstar teammate Kyrie Irving. In the next chapter of his career, it feels as if Durant seeks to be part of an organization where he can settle into a situation and win, aging gracefully in the process.
Even with Durant turning 34 years old at the start of next season, and being just two years removed from a torn Achilles, teams are lining up to offer a package for this transcendent, franchise-changing player. Somehow, despite suffering what is usually a career-altering injury for most, especially high-usage superstars, Durant has looked like himself &mdash; and maybe better.
According to Yahoo Sports&rsquo; Chris Haynes, Durant&rsquo;s preferred&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NBATV/status/1542665711172341761?s=20&amp;t=nBjRLktC_Se3VMRltaXoVQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">destination is in Arizona with the Phoenix Suns</a>. As ESPN&rsquo;s Brian Windhorst alluded to, Durant asked out hours before the start of free agency <a href="https://twitter.com/r0bato/status/1542608980123553795?s=20&amp;t=nBjRLktC_Se3VMRltaXoVQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to help the Suns</a> in potential Deandre Ayton sign-and-trade discussions. This was a calculated move on Durant's part, and he's had the Suns circled target as his top landing spot. From Durant&rsquo;s perspective, having Phoenix as his No. 1 choice makes too much sense from multiple angles.

First, Durant views Devin Booker as one of the best young players in the NBA. For years, Durant has been impressed with Booker from afar. And as the young star continues to develop into a bona fide top-15 player in the NBA, Durant&rsquo;s praise has been heard every step of the way.
Only a few short months ago, Durant <a href="https://youtu.be/pXG-4Ne4kcs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke glowingly about Booker&rsquo;s game</a> on JJ Redick&rsquo;s podcast, "The Old Man and The Three."
&ldquo;He just has a pretty game for one, but I just think he&rsquo;s really mastering who he is right now," <a href="https://youtu.be/pXG-4Ne4kcs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Durant said of Booker</a>. "He&rsquo;s figuring it out, like how to play at an elite level but still win, because he was always scoring the ball. But he knows how to win.&rdquo;

Durant and Booker have long had a mutual admiration for one another, but their bond began to blossom back in 2019 when both were in Las Vegas with Team USA.
A few years ago, a young, star-struck Booker told me that Durant was the one who approached him about wanting to develop their relationship even further.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s pretty well, we&rsquo;re just fans of basketball,&rdquo; Booker <a href="https://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2019/1/1/18162944/phoenix-suns-focus-kevin-durant-wish-list-destination" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told me in 2020 about his relationship with Durant</a>. &ldquo;When you love the game and watch somebody with that much skill on both ends of the floor, you just have immediate respect for him. So, at USA [camp], he came to me like, &lsquo;Let&rsquo;s play one-on-one. We have always been at a distance... Keep going, you know, your game is really solid.&rsquo; And having that chance to interact with each other then, develop the relationship even more [was great]. One of my favorite players in the league to watch from a skill-set standpoint. He has it all.&rdquo;

Booker grew up idolizing Durant. (He even had a Fathead of the future Hall-of-Famer on his wall growing up.) Fast-forward to now, and this could be a full-circle moment for the 25-year-old All-Star; one of his idols seeking him out and wanting to play alongside him. Durant and Booker could be basketball nirvana on the court, but this relationship is also already one that's featured immense mutual respect for years.
Another reason Durant prefers the Suns is head coach Monty Williams, who coached KD for a short stint with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a lead assistant, plus he had multiple interactions with him during Team USA activities.&nbsp;
And the cherry on top? Chris Paul's elite point guard skills in setting up the offense.
Everything Durant craves is available to him in Phoenix. He'd have the stars around him to compete and go on multiple championship runs in the immediate future, as well as pre-existing relationships within the organization. The Suns have a win-now mentality, the right mix of star power and a front office willing to pay a hefty price to compete for titles.
The price Phoenix will need to pay for Durant is going to be astronomical. (Think about the Paul George trade to the Los Angeles Clippers or the Anthony Davis blockbuster to the Los Angeles Lakers.)
With the way draft picks are being moved around at the moment, Brooklyn should rightfully receive the maximum amount of compensation possible in regards to draft capital. Ayton will likely be out the door via sign-and-trade; whether he lands in Brooklyn is the biggest question. (The Nets reportedly aren't interested in Ayton, so the Suns may need to find a third team or separate deal.) Mikal Bridges and/or Cameron Johnson would also likely have to be included in a Durant blockbuster.
Is Phoenix truly willing to gut its entire young core and future in order to chase the organization&rsquo;s first NBA championship? The easy answer on that is yes, and Suns general manager James Jones is known to be passive in valuing the draft process anyways. Phoenix is probably more than willing to include whatever amount of draft picks necessary with the goal of creating the league&rsquo;s next super-team in The Valley.

One full year after returning from his Achilles tear, Durant averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists on a ridiculously-efficient 63.4% True Shooting percentage. Durant is a basketball demigod &mdash; we all already know this &mdash; but within the Suns&rsquo; system, his own game would reach scary levels of effectiveness.
The ever-flowing gravity pull that Durant and Booker would have beside one another is truly unfair. Paul would be able to slide back into being the third or fourth option too, which is necessary at the twilight stages of his illustrious career. Having a foundation of Durant, Booker and Paul is already enough to be an elite team. After that, the next steps would be to retool around this trio, as the Suns&rsquo; roster will look completely different.
For the Nets, it will be very tough to find a realistic return package that can net them a &ldquo;win-now&rdquo; offer on top of recouping much-needed assets on the draft front. Sending out Ayton, Bridges and Johnson, plus whatever other picks and assets are involved, would be a monster haul for the Nets to fully reset. The Suns&rsquo; young trio paired alongside Ben Simmons would keep Brooklyn at least competitive for the postseason, which seems to be a goal for the Nets in trade negotiations.
It&rsquo;s not often you find two situations where the stars just align at the perfect time. That&rsquo;s exactly what&rsquo;s occurring between Durant and the Suns. Both sides want this to happen, and within the player-empowerment era, it seems very possible that this could come to fruition.
Durant bet on Irving and it blew up in his face. Instead, he wishes to pivot to an organization with newfound stability (thanks to Jones and Williams), a dynamic backcourt of Booker and Paul, and a sizeable championship window since the team projects to be a juggernaut in the Western Conference. Over the last two seasons, Phoenix has the most total wins in the NBA. Adding Durant to the already strong core of winning pieces in place presents the Suns with their best opportunity to hoist the Larry O&rsquo;Brien trophy.
Durant&rsquo;s arrival wouldn&rsquo;t be like Charles Barkley in 1992. This would be an entirely new level of relevancy coming to The Valley, as the Suns have already become title favorites in Las Vegas before a Durant deal has even occurred.
Phoenix wants to commit to an extended championship window centered around two of the greatest players in the NBA&rsquo;s modern era. Alongside them would be a young star in Booker who is showing to have real star-power pull.
Buckle up, because Durant has now singlehandedly changed the NBA landscape in one fell swoop. Now, the Suns are looking to soon pull off their biggest move in franchise history.

Why Kevin Durant's attraction to the Suns should come as no surprise

The ball bounced twice on each side of the rim before going in.
Kawhi Leonard&rsquo;s nearly impossible game-winning fadeaway jumper over the outstretched right arm of Joel Embiid ended a seven-game thriller of a 2018-19 Eastern Conference Semifinals. The series saw the Toronto Raptors escape with a 92-90 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, in large part due to underwhelming performances from Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris all series long. <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/jimmy-butler-is-a-16game-player">Those were expounded upon here just last month</a>. In fairness to Embiid, similar to these 2022 playoffs, <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/2019/05/07/joel-embiid-76ers-injuries-illness-timeline-history-playoffs">he was injured as hell.</a> He tried his best.
Jimmy Butler wasn&rsquo;t perfect for the Sixers that spring, but he was a hell of a lot better. He averaged 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in the series, with by far the team&rsquo;s best offensive rating at 118, not counting Amir Johnson who played a mere (ha, get it? Never mind) 20 minutes. Yet and still, the Sixers were right there, and had Leonard&rsquo;s shot missed, who knows if the Sixers would&rsquo;ve went on to defeat the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors as the Raptors did en route to their first NBA championship?

Regardless, those four bounces led to Butler&rsquo;s fate: he was signed-and-traded to the Miami Heat that very summer. Instead of keeping Butler, the Sixers chose Simmons, Harris, Brett Brown and Al Horford.

Since Butler became a member of the Heat, the Sixers have still been a playoff team. In the 2019-20 season, which was obviously paused in March due to COVID-19 before resuming in the summer, the Sixers earned the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and were swept in Round 1 of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics. Simmons didn&rsquo;t play in the playoffs due to injury. Those same Celtics lost to the Heat in six games during the Eastern Conference Finals, and a Butler-led Miami team reached its first NBA Finals since LeBron James&rsquo; 2014 departure. The Heat, who were a five-seed in the East and top three or four for most of the season, lost to the champion Los Angeles Lakers in six games, but not without a historical postseason from Butler.

In 2020-21, the Sixers were the Eastern Conference&rsquo;s top seed after compiling an impressive 49-23 record in the 72-game season. Unfortunately, they were embarrassingly defeated on their home floor against the fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks in Round 2. Simmons still hasn&rsquo;t played since, and despite Embiid&rsquo;s play, he was once again let down by those around him.

Butler and the Heat? Well, after a little seven-week break between the end of the NBA Finals and the beginning of training camp for the 2020-21 season (as opposed to the standard three-plus months even a Finals team would get in a typical league calendar year), the team flamed out and were swept by the Bucks.
Both teams were able to properly reset heading into the 2021-22 season, and as fate would have it, the No. 1 seeded Heat matched up with the No. 4 seeded Sixers in the semifinals. Butler vs. his old team, where Simmons and then-head-coach Brown no longer resided, but Embiid and Harris were among those who remained.
With a 4-2 lead on May 12, 2022, exactly three years after Leonard&rsquo;s four bounces ended Butler&rsquo;s Sixer tenure, he led his team, in a hostile environment that once rooted for his every move, to an emphatic 99-90 victory to end the Sixers&rsquo; season. Sure, 99-90 may not sound like much, but if you watched the game, you saw the Heat grind their way to a 19-4 run to begin the third quarter, mount nine-straight points to begin the fourth and build a 20-point lead as just five minutes remained before the Sixers cut the lead in garbage time.

In the modern NBA, organizations seem to take on the personality of their stars, for better or worse. But Miami identified one who matched their ethos, and Butler knew it would be the place for him. A place where villains are welcomed, as <a href="https://www.slamonline.com/nba/jimmy-butler-to-joel-embiid-i-know-a-place-where-villains-are-welcome/">he once told Embiid</a>. And a place that is, in their own culture, counter to what their own city is admired for. Miami, to outsiders, is revered for partying, glamour and beaches, but the Heat are respected and occasionally mocked for a culture that is driven by blue-collar work ethic. It's an identity that requires being in &ldquo;Heat shape,&rdquo; playing defense-first, developing undrafted rookies into future rotation players and adding the occasional stars who fit into that identity.&nbsp;
The Heat are also known for their persistent fight, for being a pain in the ass for whoever opposes them and for being an overlooked team that is tailored to those who prioritize winning over highlights.

James Harden was brought to Philadelphia to lead in moments like these, but he did anything but that. Butler, who had often been compared to Harden as a byproduct of playing similar positions, dropped 32 points with 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in a closeout game. Harden had 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting, taking one shot in each of the final two quarters. He said the ball didn't get back to him. That's the guy who had the Sixers' second-highest usage rate in the series. Butler is now averaging 28.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 2.1 steals and on 53/36/81 shooting splits in the playoffs.
Butler doesn&rsquo;t (yet?) have a championship. Most players don&rsquo;t, including many greats, but Butler is a winner, a leader and someone <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amof84tDBnM">Embiid's career misses dearly for good reason</a>, even while he could look at his bench and see another all-time wing in Harden beside him. But basketball isn&rsquo;t strictly about&nbsp; numbers, or strictly in between the lines, or strictly any one thing. It encompasses everything. And that&rsquo;s what the Sixers and many have failed to realize when assessing Butler&rsquo;s greatness.
But in Philadelphia, exactly three years after it all ended, he had the last laugh.

After falling short of postseason success with Philadelphia, Jimmy Butler showed the Sixers why it was a mistake to let him go.

The Los Angeles Clippers face the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight to determine which team will take the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs and which team will need to face either the New Orleans Pelicans or San Antonio Spurs for the eighth seed. While the Clippers may ultimately fail to quality for the postseason, they have battled through injuries all season and are now primed to be a dangerous dark horse in the West with the recent return of Paul George and Norman Powell (and the possible return of Kawhi Leonard down the road).&nbsp;
The Clippers will have their hands full against the Timberwolves, who have a strong core of young talent that has taken on the gritty personality of former Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley. But Los Angeles has developed a stingy personality throughout the season, putting together several big comeback wins. And now, with George and Powell healthy, they add some much-needed firepower.
George, in particular, will be instrumental for the Clippers. He received ridicule for his lackluster performance in the Bubble, but George has looked spry since his return from a torn UCL in his shooting elbow and could carry this team like he did last year in the postseason. In his first game back, George posted 34 points, 6 assists, 4 steals, 2 assists and 1 block on 50% shooting from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. His ability to run the offense as a primary playmaker and scoring threat addresses one of the biggest issues the Clippers struggled with all season. Reggie Jackson has been the team&rsquo;s primary scorer and playmaker throughout most of the season, but it left the offense sputtering at times, with the team often surrendering leads or creating huge deficits.&nbsp;
The Clippers made a habit of starting off slowly or going through long scoring droughts. With George and Powell bolstering the lineup, the Clippers now have more options to run their offense through. While the team has several talented offensive players, no one could replicate the offensive abilities of George so, anytime Jackson struggled, the Clippers&rsquo; offense staggered.&nbsp;
George and Powell have also bolstered the team&rsquo;s defense, adding more length and physicality on the wing. George has been generating several deflections per game, jumping passing lanes and turning defense into easy offense in transition. Powell doesn&rsquo;t have George&rsquo;s length, but he is a gritty defender and has meshed quickly within the Clippers&rsquo; defense.&nbsp;

The sample size is small, but the early numbers for the Clippers since George came back are impressive. In seven games since George returned to action, the Clippers are first in offensive rating, sixth in defensive rating and first overall in net rating. These numbers cannot be relied on to make any definitive predictions about the Clippers&rsquo; matchup with Minnesota or their prospects in the postseason given the small sample size (and considering several teams played limited lineups), but the stats are encouraging. This is especially true when you consider that the Clippers were 22nd in net rating from the time George suffered his elbow injury until his return.&nbsp;
The Clippers&rsquo; shooting has been especially impressive recently. Since George&rsquo;s return, the Clippers are second in True Shooting percentage (64.7%), first in three-pointers made per game (18) and first in three-point percentage (46.5%). Luke Kennard led the league in three-point shooting this season but is now sidelined with a hamstring injury. His loss could be an issue for the Clippers, but the person most likely to absorb his minutes is Amir Coffey, who has been on a tear in his most recent outings. In the Clippers&rsquo; season finale, Coffey posted 35 points, 13 rebounds, 7 threes (on 10 attempts), 5 assists and a block. This is another reason why the Clippers are such a wildcard in the West. Should the Clippers advance to the first round, Kennard would likely be back in the lineup and Coffey would probably only play a few minutes.&nbsp;
The roster is deep, featuring more than 10 veteran contributors who produce at a high level and have played effectively within their respective roles. With George back as the team&rsquo;s number-one option and Powell playing exceedingly well in his limited action as a Clipper, there is reason to believe this team is peaking at the exact right time.&nbsp;

Then, there is the Kawhi factor.
Clippers head coach Ty Lue recently said that Kawhi has not advanced beyond individual workouts. However, Bill Simmons of The Ringer recently stated that he <a href="https://twitter.com/ClippersLead/status/1513605411483521026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has heard</a> that Leonard is now doing three-on-three workouts, which could indicate he is ramping up his rehab and moving closer to game action. Also, ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk recently <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33579571/nba-playoffs-injury-updates-steph-curry-zion-williamson-anthony-davis-more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Leonard may be able to return if the Clippers make it out of the Play-In Tournament.
If the Clippers advance to the first round and Leonard is able to return at some point, this team conceivably could matchup favorably against any opponent. It&rsquo;s still not clear whether Leonard will return and what sort of condition he will be in, but the possibility of Leonard returning has to be scary for the Western Conference contenders.
With George playing at a high level, the Clippers have a puncher&rsquo;s chance of beating anyone on any given night. With a healthy Leonard, they become a huge threat that&rsquo;s much better than their 42-40 record indicates.
The Clippers have been hit harder by injuries this season than arguably any other team. As of April 8, the Clippers' players combined to miss 383 games this season, which is the <a href="https://twitter.com/ManGamesLostNBA/status/1512572823679774736" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third-most</a> in the NBA (trailing only the Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers). And when you factor in that their stars were often the ones who were sidelined, it's no surprise that the Clippers <a href="https://twitter.com/ManGamesLostNBA/status/1512572696537845760" target="_blank" rel="noopener">led the league</a> in lost VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) this season.
Now, they are getting healthy at the right time and have a shot to make an improbably deep playoff run. A lot of things need to turn in their favor, but with a little luck, Paul George and the Clippers could make this one of the more interesting playoff races in recent memory.&nbsp;

Three of the four California NBA franchises have now resided in the Sour Rankings for multiple consecutive weeks.&nbsp;
This might be the worst check-in to date. The Los Angeles Lakers, with a coach on the brink of getting fired, an avalanche of roster criticism and a storm of rumors, have taken the No. 1 spot in these rankings. Not far behind are the Sacramento Kings, who continue to let an attainable Play-In bid slip away while trade gossip engulfs their own headlines. And the L.A. Clippers, while battling admirably, approach a criticial franchise inflection point with this week's trade deadline.
It is wild on the West Coast, and don't expect things to calm down anytime soon.
If you're new to the Sour Rankings, here's a refresher: Unlike the typical "power rankings" that repeat themselves throughout sports media, Sour Rankings are a bizarro-world counter. These rankings highlight the top-10 most frustrating NBA franchises throughout the season, and they will be updated every week to match the twists and turns of the league.&nbsp;

Escaping the Sour Rankings:&nbsp;The Houston Rockets managed to sneak out this week after going 1-1 with a nice win over the Utah Jazz and a "good effort" loss to the Golden State Warriors. KJ Martin tallied 14 points, 3 assists and 2 steals in that Friday defeat off the bench. Also, a shoutout to Rio Grande Valley prospect Daishen Nix, who is putting up over 27 points per game for Houston's G League affiliate this month.&nbsp;

10. Utah Jazz (30-17)
Expectations are high in Utah. This is a reigning No. 1 seed that needs to take the leap to legitimate title contender, and as of this recent stretch, the Jazz simply aren't there. Utah is 3-7 in its last 10 games with an 18th-ranked defense over the past two weeks. The Rudy Gobert slander is back, but as <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/rudy-gobert-has-a-point" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nekias Duncan wrote recently</a>, he's far from the main problem with this defense.
The Jazz are reportedly looking for <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/jazz-looking-for-wing-defenders-on-trade-market" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wing defenders on the trade market</a>, which could sorely help while teams run rampant against Joe Ingles, Bojan Bogdanovic, and even Royce O'Neale.

9. Los Angeles Clippers (23-25)
The Clippers and their injury-plagued roster keep battling, and went a solid 2-2 with close losses to the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets this week. They've been a bottom-10 team on both ends recently, but are still solidly ninth in the West, so LAC remains in a limbo state ahead of the trade deadline.&nbsp;
If the Clippers are truly<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/clippers-reportedly-willing-to-discuss-majority-of-veterans-in-trades" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> willing to discuss most of their veterans in trade talks</a>, teams should be lining up to make offers for Nic Batum. The 33-year-old continues to be one of the league's most underrated complementary players. He's up to a career-high 64.9% True Shooting percentage and has been lights-out from beyond the arc while consistently taking tough defensive matchups.

8. Portland Trail Blazers (20-26)
Anfernee Simons has almost singlehandedly given Portland joy. He's averaging 25.0 points and 7.2 assists per game in the month of January, while the Blazers have quietly gone a respectable 7-4 this month. Portland is now three games up on the Kings for the final Play-In bid in the West, and that should be comfortable breathing room given Sacramento's state right now.
The Blazers have 5 games in 7 days coming up, including matchups against Minnesota, Dallas and Chicago. If they can break .500 in that stretch, they might leave the Sour Rankings entirely.

7. Atlanta Hawks (21-25)
Of course, the Hawks' best stretch of winning comes when trade rumors are swirling. Atlanta has taken its last four games, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets this week. Trae Young is averaging 31.3 points and 9.0 assists per game during the streak while canning 47.6% of his three-pointers, so he's on fire.
Onyeka Okongwu has also blended in seamlessly with the starters while Clint Capela has been out. De'Andre Hunter is on track to the tune of 18.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Is it too early to be back on the Hawks train?

6. Boston Celtics (24-24)
Jayson Tatum's 51-point bombshell on Sunday essentially saved the Celtics from a potential No. 1 ranking this week. He now has the most 50-point games (5) in franchise history, and he is 22 years old (!!!). It's been a brutal year for Tatum, so Celtics fans certainly hope Sunday's performance was a spark.

Meanwhile, the same team also went scoreless for seven crucial fourth-quarter minutes and blew a winnable game against Portland. In a 2-2 week, the Celtics move up by default against a struggling middle pack in the East. Perhaps a fully-healthy starting five is what the team has always needed.

5. New York Knicks (23-24)
So the Knicks have a sneaky 10th-ranked offense and fifth-ranked defense over the past two weeks. I know it doesn't reflect much in the record (1-2 this week) or today's rankings, but I do think good things are slowly happening.
From what I've seen and read, the biggest gripe appears to be that Tom Thibodeau still won't fully unleash his young talent. Immanuel Quickley has started just 2 of his 43 games played. Quentin Grimes has maximized his bench role with quality two-way play. Miles "Deuce" McBride has graduated from the G League. There's a lot of excitement around these backcourt players in particular and the fans are hungry for more.

4. Indiana Pacers (17-30)
The Pacers' state of affairs hasn't meaningfully changed for over a calendar month. So this time, I'm giving the floor to Justin Holiday, who has been a bright spot in dim places for Indiana. The eldest Holiday brother is shooting a scorching 42.0% from beyond the arc and averaging 13.4 points per game in January, while being one of the few plus perimeter defenders on the roster. He's another Batum-level role-player who, if I were GM of a contender, I'd heavily pursue before the trade deadline.

3. Washington Wizards (23-24)
Fortunately, the Wizards don't seem all too concerned with <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/bradley-beal-likely-to-decline-player-option-team-has-not-talked-trade" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bradley Beal's likely free agency</a> this offseason. Unfortunately, their on-court slide continues after an 0-3 week with losses to the Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Celtics. Washington started 10-3 and has since gone 13-21 with the league's 22nd-ranked offensive rating and 26th-ranked defensive rating. The Wizards have two more games this month and some extended time off before the schedule ramps back up in February.&nbsp;

2. Sacramento Kings (18-30)
So the Kings are <a href="https://theathletic.com/3078346/2022/01/19/insiders-think-a-ben-simmons-deal-gets-done-plus-a-pulse-on-teams-desperation-factor-nba-trade-deadline-roundtable/?source=nbatw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> thinking about acquiring Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris from Philly and... I just don't know if that's how you get out of 15 years' worth of directionless mediocrity. They're both great players, but do they significantly raise the ceiling when the Sixers would get a haul in return?&nbsp;
Sacramento is 2-8 in its last 10, and this quote from the aformentioned report by Sam Amick sums things up nicely:
"The widely held belief is that this front office, with general manager Monte McNair in his second season after working for all those years with Morey in Houston, simply must do a deal of significance now. To no one&rsquo;s surprise, there has been a collective loss of faith in the prospect of this core evolving into a contender in the West."

NBA Sour Rankings: Collapses in California

Doc Rivers recently had plenty of nice things to say about Giannis Antetokounmpo, whom he considers to be the most dominant player in the NBA right now.
The Milwaukee Bucks are having a slow start to the season, sporting a 6-8 record while sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. The defending champs are not looking as dominant as they did last year, when they stormed through the regular season and won the NBA championship. However, it's worth noting that the team isn't at full strength; they've been missing their second-best player Khris Middleton, who should return this week after being sidelined due to the NBA's health-and-safety protocols.&nbsp;
But despite the Bucks' struggles as a team, Giannis is still producing big numbers, averaging 26.6 points, 11.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. In a <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/giannis-antetokounmpo-ben-simmons-doc-rivers-20211111.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer</a>, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers had a lot of praise for Giannis, calling him the most dominant player in the NBA. Rivers also admires that Giannis overcame his free-throw shooting problems in the playoffs last season, delivering big time and silencing the opposing crowd when everyone was against him.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t like gushing over another guy, but what he did last year was amazing," Rivers <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/giannis-antetokounmpo-ben-simmons-doc-rivers-20211111.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. "They lost back-to-back games in the playoffs, he struggled at the free-throw line. He goes on the road. He has 20,000 people counting [the seconds before his free throws] &mdash; hell, we were counting when we played him &mdash; and then he takes that to the last two games. He&rsquo;s the most dominant player in the NBA. He makes free throws. He was defiant almost.&rdquo;
Giannis was really struggling from the foul line, and everybody saw the fans counting to 10 when he was standing at the charity stripe getting ready to shoot. At one point, it seemed like they were starting to get into his head, but he persevered and made those shots when it mattered the most. Such poise earned the ultimate respect of Rivers, who is positive that not too many players would be able to overcome that pressure, let alone lead their teams to a title.
&ldquo;That&rsquo;s what I liked about him. He&rsquo;s just defiant," Rivers <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/giannis-antetokounmpo-ben-simmons-doc-rivers-20211111.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. "'I know I&rsquo;m not making free throws. I&rsquo;m still going to keep driving. I&rsquo;m still going to keep attacking. I&rsquo;m going to still step up to the free-throw line, and eventually, I&rsquo;m going to make them.&rsquo; He may have been the only one who believed that at times. But the fact that he had a fan club of one was probably the reason he is who he is.&rdquo;
Antetokounmpo was unstoppable last postseason, averaging 30.2 points, 12.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.2 steals (while shooting 56.9% from the field and 58.7% from the free throw line).
Now, Giannis is focused on getting the Bucks back on track and climbing up the Eastern Conference standings, starting with a nationally televised showdown against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday (with Middleton expected to play for Milwaukee).

Doc Rivers considers Giannis NBA's most dominant player

The Philadelphia 76ers might be losing one battle after another, but is it possible that the losses could end up helping the team win the war?
Ben Simmons and his saga persists, Tobias Harris is missing in action and Joel Embiid has COVID-19.&nbsp;
Despite it all, Doc Rivers&rsquo; team has gone out and competed admirably. Even with Tuesday night&rsquo;s 118-109 loss to the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks, if there&rsquo;s one thing the Sixers have proven in the early going of the 2021-22 season, it&rsquo;s that they will fight.
That says something.
In the NBA, there&rsquo;s no such thing as a participation trophy, and coaches don&rsquo;t typically find any solace in moral victories. But whether it be Tyrese Maxey, Shake Milton, Georges Niang or Furkan Korkmaz, Rivers has seen firsthand that he has a formidable rotation. Along with Seth Curry, the lesser-known Sixers have carried their weight, and then some.
If the team is able to get back to 100% &mdash; and that&rsquo;s still an &ldquo;if&rdquo; at this point &mdash; one can&rsquo;t help but wonder whether it'll be able to provide ample resistance against the Bucks or the Brooklyn Nets come postseason time.
That&rsquo;s especially true if &mdash; as many expect &mdash; the team ends up trading Simmons.
At this point, the franchise appears to be in a staring match with the young point guard. Daryl Morey may not be able to extract a king&rsquo;s ransom from a wannabe-contender in exchange for Simmons; at a certain point, it might be worth it for Morey to simply take what he can get.
In Brooklyn, Kyrie Irving remains a figment of everyone&rsquo;s imagination. In Boston, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum aren&rsquo;t exactly inspiring confidence with their play. And out West? Anyone who&rsquo;s capable of firing up the ESPN Trade Machine could concoct a trade or two with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, Oklahoma City Thunder or Portland Trail Blazers that could yield Philadelphia a decent return.
And that&rsquo;s exactly the point.
While Morey isn&rsquo;t wrong in wanting to extract all the value he can out of a potential Simmons trade, there will eventually come an impasse, and he owes it to his guys to simply allow them to carry the pieces that want to be there and move forward.&nbsp;
All things considered, the Sixers have been good. How much better could they be if they managed to land another dynamic piece in exchange for a player who isn&rsquo;t playing for them?
Odds are, Rivers would find a way to make it all work. &nbsp;

The Sixers entered play on Nov. 9 with a 115.3 offensive rating, which &mdash; believe it or not &mdash; ranked first in the NBA.
Interestingly enough, and perhaps because the team primarily plays through Embiid, Philadelphia also entered play on Nov. 9 with the slowest pace in the entire league; it yielded just 102.6 points per game, good for eighth-best in the Association.
In other words, Rivers has seemed to realize that his Sixers are a bit of a throwback in that they can excel as a half-court team playing inside-out, and if they force other teams into a slower pace of play, they&rsquo;ll come out on top more often than not. At least before Embiid went missing from the lineup, through the team&rsquo;s first 10 games, they&rsquo;ve used that recipe to win some games.
Success in the half-court requires a few things, most importantly a player who can command double-teams in the post. Embiid obviously checks that box. Off-ball movement and floor-spreading shooters are imperative, and it&rsquo;s there that Simmons presented an obstacle. It might not be fair to say that removing him from the lineup has been addition by subtraction, but it has at least shown us that the Sixers can function &mdash; and win &mdash; with Embiid as the sole focal point.

If Morey wants to help his team get to the next level, his focus should be on getting auxiliary pieces that can help Embiid challenge the Bucks and Nets for supremacy atop the Eastern Conference &mdash; not on winning the game of chicken the organization currently finds itself engaged in with Simmons and his representatives. Landing Jaylen Brown or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in exchange for Simmons would be great, but it might also be pie in the sky.
At a certain point, you&rsquo;ve simply got to cut bait.
What&rsquo;s true of every generation of basketball fans is this: we have all been reminded that championship windows can close rather abruptly.
When the Boston Celtics landed Kyrie Irving in 2017, the team had an embarrassment of riches that was surely thought to have a Larry O&rsquo;Brien trophy in its future. The same was said of Kevin Durant&rsquo;s Oklahoma City Thunder. When Steve Nash arrived in Los Angeles to join forces with Kobe Bryant, many believed the Lakers would flirt with 70 wins.&nbsp;
Obviously, none of that ended up being true.
Way back when, once upon a time, Shaquille O&rsquo;Neal was thought to be a second-rate center. Sure, he could break a backboard, but could Shaq lead a team to a championship? It was a debate for a while, mainly because he took a fair amount of lumps from the likes of David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon, the latter of whom handed Shaq a humiliating sweep in the 1995 NBA Finals.
To this point, Embiid&rsquo;s journey in the NBA has been somewhat reminiscent... Except he hasn&rsquo;t even sniffed a Finals appearance.&nbsp;
By this point in his career, Shaq already won a conference finals and left Orlando to pursue the destiny he dreamed of. Embiid, obviously, is still on his first chapter, and truth be told, he&rsquo;s doing a pretty good job of writing a compelling story in Philadelphia.
With a capable supporting cast around him, a championship-caliber head coach and the ability to serve as the franchise&rsquo;s cornerstone, Embiid has an opportunity to accomplish something great for the Sixers.
Tomorrow isn&rsquo;t promised, though. And if there&rsquo;s a lesson to be learned both from the Sixers&rsquo; strong start to the season &mdash; and from dashed championship aspirations of the past &mdash; it&rsquo;s that promise shouldn&rsquo;t be taken for granted.
It&rsquo;s about time that Daryl Morey comes to terms with that fact.

Early results suggest 76ers may be better off without Ben Simmons

Night after night, NBA fans are spoiled by watching these talented, skilled and athletic players grace the court, rewrite the record-books, and put their greatness on display.
That is why this 75th season should not only be a season of appreciation, but one of celebration.
A celebration of how the game has evolved, with past greats giving current stars their well-deserved bouquet of flowers and watching in awe of their envelope-pushing feats and accomplishments. Celebrating those next in line and being optimistically bullish on where they will carry the league next.
The opening weeks of the NBA season did not disappoint, so here are six aspects that have stood out so far.
The Not-So-Curious Case of James Harden
The Brooklyn Nets as a collective group have struggled in the early goings of the season. Their 2-3 record isn&rsquo;t what&rsquo;s been expected of them at all. In these five games, despite his 7.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game, James Harden is averaging just 16.6 points per game with 35.9/33.3/93.3 shooting splits. Even with the season being only two weeks old, there is a notion out there that Harden&rsquo;s struggles are &mdash; or should be &mdash; cause for concern. (Our Nekias Duncan recently did a <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/why-isnt-james-harden-getting-to-the-free-throw-line" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deep dive on The Beard's early offensive slump</a>.)
Nets head coach Steve Nash refutes that, and affirms his confidence in Harden: &ldquo;He&rsquo;s still an excellent player even if he&rsquo;s not at peak form and we still believe in him. And he will get there in the next few weeks."
After the Nets&rsquo; 106-93 loss to the Miami Heat, Harden insinuated that he isn&rsquo;t fully recovered from his hamstring injury.
"As much as I want to get back to 30 and 40 points, I can&rsquo;t do that. As much as I want to, as much as I would love to. I didn&rsquo;t have any opportunities to play pickup. It was all rehab,&rdquo; Harden said.

Harden is the type of player who plays himself into shape. If he wasn&rsquo;t 100% healed from the hamstring injury, he couldn&rsquo;t participate in runs, so the reasoning here is plausible. Plus, it&rsquo;s also fair to say that Harden is having to, once again, adjust his game. Last season, Harden began to facilitate more to accommodate Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, and provided an extra scoring punch when needed. While Harden won&rsquo;t drop 30 to 40 points on a consistent basis, he will have to pick and choose his moments between deferring and being aggressive in order for the Nets to succeed.
Live From Buzz City
The Charlotte Hornets are a fun watch, but that&rsquo;s not all they are. At 4-1, Charlotte is off to its best start in franchise history. Last Sunday's upset over the Brooklyn Nets served as the perfect example of what this team is trying to be this season &mdash; an athletic, up-tempo and gritty team with the potential to slide into the playoffs. (Our Spencer Davies <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/pj-washington-buying-into-being-hornets-super-sub-5-man" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sat down with PJ Washington</a> to discuss the team's start.)
The Hornets won that game with grit and tenacity on both sides of the ball. Kevin Durant was going to score and impact the game regardless. The Hornets just limited everyone else defensively, stuck with ball movement and made quality shots.
Again, this is a very athletic squad with chemistry that&rsquo;s getting stronger by the game. While five contests is a small sample size, it doesn&rsquo;t make what the Hornets are doing any less impressive. What&rsquo;s interesting to monitor as the season progresses is how this chemistry is tested. &nbsp;Can the Hornets keep the same camaraderie, bond and energy regardless of the record? Can they find multiple ways to win and carry that into a playoff berth instead of a play-in? We'll see if the League Pass darlings have it in them.
Leading By Example?
To further complicate matters in Philadelphia, the Sixers&rsquo; Joel Embiid is having a slow start in the earlygoing of the season. His struggles should be attributed to a right knee injury he sustained in the season opener-against the New Orleans Pelicans. In Tuesday&rsquo;s loss to the New York Knicks, Embiid was limited to 14 points on 2-of-7 from the field. According to ESPN&rsquo;s Ramona Shelburne, Embiid is playing through pain for a reason. He wants the establish leadership &mdash; on the floor and off of it.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s playing because Ben Simmons is not playing and they need one of them on the court. He wants to show leadership at this moment, because as you say, you don&rsquo;t want to fall behind where to where you cannot come back,&rdquo; Shelburne said.

While Embiid&rsquo;s reasoning for playing through his pain is admirable and noble, it may be best for him to sit a few games to give his knee a chance to heal. It&rsquo;s only the opening weeks of a new season, five games out of 82. An injured Embiid being out there wouldn&rsquo;t make matters any better for an embattled Sixers team.
Chef Board-ar-dee
What Stephen Curry does on the court shouldn&rsquo;t surprise anyone anymore. But still, he somehow manages to surprise and continues to push the limits of what&rsquo;s possible on the floor. Despite poor shooting percentages for his standards (43% from the field, 40% from three), Curry is averaging 30.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. Grabbing eight boards a night &mdash; which includes the 10-rebound outings he had to start the season against the Los Angeles Lakers and L.A. Clippers &mdash; has been a surprise that was very unexpected. When it comes to the impact that Curry&rsquo;s rebounding has on the Warriors, it can be looked at as a good or a bad thing.
On one hand, it is well known that Golden State is a small team, and rebounding is an area of concern and point of emphasis. It will take an all-hands-and-bodies-on-deck approach for the team to fight for control of the glass, and seeing that Curry is hustling for boards and doing his part is encouraging. On the other hand, a 6-foot-3 point guard shouldn&rsquo;t be leading the team in rebounds. Others will have to put forth more of an effort on the glass. As a collective unit, however, the Warriors have been rebounding well enough to contribute to their 4-1 record.
The Bulls&rsquo; Market?
For the first time since the Michael Jordan era, the Chicago Bulls began the season undefeated. That was, of course, before losing to the New York Knicks at home on Thursday night. The caveat to this rapid start is that Chicago opened the season with a very soft schedule, playing the Detroit Pistons twice, the Toronto Raptors and the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the schedule does not negate the admirable and noteworthy job the team has done so far.
Right now, the Bulls are third in team plus-minus (+7.8), fourth in defensive rating (100.2) and 10th in assists per game (24.6). The additions of Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan, and Alex Caruso have been proven to be solid, as all three have fit right in. Each player&rsquo;s skill set complements the other, and just like the Hornets, their chemistry and cohesiveness is growing with every game. The progression of this team, regardless of wins and losses, will be interesting to watch as the season goes on.
Let Them Play
The new rules to limit non-basketball moves used to draw fouls, for the most part, have been a welcome change to the game. While the rules neutralized the flopping, it also empowers defenses in other ways. They can be more physical, bumping guys off the perimeter and wearing them down by getting in their jerseys a bit. It also forces those who once benefited from what was neutralized to ball out and open up their bags a bit. What I&rsquo;m looking forward to seeing is the adjustments offenses will make in response throughout the season, and to see how diverse the tools in the arsenal of skills are &mdash; especially with the ones that have been struggling to begin the season. I&rsquo;d like to see how they will adjust.

6 observations from the opening weeks of NBA action

It's a new NBA season, which means the Sour Rankings are back!&nbsp;
Unlike the typical "power rankings" that repeat themselves throughout sports media, Sour Rankings are a bizarro-world counter. These rankings highlight the top-10 most frustrating NBA franchises throughout the season, and they will be updated every week to match the twists and turns of the league.&nbsp;
This is not merely a bottom-10 of your typical best-to-worst power rankings. You will see championship contenders and playoff hopefuls mixed in with struggling squads. Teams well-under .500 may never touch the Sour Rankings because they are on track with their respective processes. Injuries, drama, transactions and general underwhelming play will all be considered.
The central question is ultimately this: How good should you feel about the direction of each franchise? Some teams value wins this season and paths to a title, while others are looking down the road at long-term pieces.&nbsp;
This week is not a "preview" installment; it is rather a barometer of the general vibe around a franchise as things get underway. The NBA preseason is generally filled with optimism; 10 teams make the Sour Rankings, but that doesn't mean they're all in dire straits, as I'll note.
So without further ado, let's get to it!
10. Washington Wizards
Given the circumstances, the Wizards had a satisfactory 2021 offseason. They returned three rotation-caliber players from the Russell Westbrook trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, and then went out and found a strong backcourt partner for Bradley Beal in Spencer Dinwiddie.&nbsp;
Washington could be a very solid team on paper with improved depth &mdash; but is that enough to make considerable playoff noise in the Eastern Conference? Beal's looming 2022 free-agent status shines a harsh spotlight on the current Wizards. Their star has stuck it out through multiple years of mediocrity. Maybe he'll re-up with the team that drafted him, but Beal would undoubtedly appreciate some serious postseason contention before having to decide.
9. Indiana Pacers
The injury bug simply will not let go of the Pacers. T.J. Warren still appears to be a ways off from recovering from a foot injury that held him to just four games last season. Caris LeVert will <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nba/pacers/2021/10/16/pacers-caris-levert-getting-closer-but-miss-first-four-games/8489876002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly miss at least the first four games</a> of the regular season as he works to return from a stress fracture in his back. These are two top-scoring options out of the short-term picture.
Indiana largely opted to stay the course in a suddenly crowded East. The Pacers can't afford to fall behind early, and these absences certainly won't help.
8. New Orleans Pelicans
Another team hampered by health, this ranking is entirely due to Zion Williamson's injury status. The superstar forward has suffered a sprained knee, torn meniscus and foot fracture in the past years, and is now without a return timetable as he recovers from that foot surgery. Without Williamson, the Pelicans are nowhere near the playoff sleeper they could be &mdash; even with a new head coach and some positive roster moves. They need their centerpiece, and his <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/we-should-be-worried-about-zion-williamson-ability-to-stay-healthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developing pattern of injuries is concerning</a>.
7. Phoenix Suns

Three hours before writing this, I would not have remotely considered the Suns to be in the Sour Rankings. But the rookie extension deadline has passed without Deandre Ayton securing a long-term deal, the first No. 1 pick since Anthony Bennett not to do so.
Suns general manager James Jones did not negotiate a maximum contract extension with the Bahamian big man, perhaps at the direction of team owner Robert Sarver &mdash; but the team did agree to a 4-year, $43 million extension with draft classmate Landry Shamet. As Evan Sidery <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/news/authors/evan-sidery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote in regards to Ayton</a>, that's blasphemous, and it could fragment an extremely fun, likable Phoenix squad.
6. Sacramento Kings
Your 2021 Las Vegas Summer League champs are back to fight the longest postseason drought in the league. The Kings are making strides with their young talent, highlighted by the preseason success of No. 9 overall pick Davion Mitchell, and retained a core piece in Richaun Holmes.&nbsp;
But does it feel like Sacramento is any closer to the playoffs? Buddy Hield was all-but-traded to the Lakers, and his future is now uncertain as the Kings see if a De'Aaron Fox-Tyrese-Haliburton-Mitchell lineup has potential. What about 2018 No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley III, who was not extended at Monday's deadline? He's as big of a question mark as one can exist among young prospects league-wide.&nbsp;
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
There's definitely reason for optimism with the Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards had a phenomenal second half to the 2020-21 season and an overall stellar rookie year. Karl-Anthony Towns can be rid of the awful, awful year-plus he has endured personally. D'Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley can get buckets, Jaden McDaniels and Jarred Vanderbilt are intriguing defensive pieces and Chris Finch had a summer to prep for all of this as head coach.&nbsp;
But the Gersson Rosas firing and fallout feels all too Timberwolves-y. It's yet another reset for Towns, who was vocally frustrated at training camp. Is the front office in position to guide the team with the season about to start?&nbsp;
4. Portland Trail Blazers
Larry Nance Jr.'s acquisition partially salvaged what was a wildly terrible offseason in Portland between the Chauncey Billups hiring and the Damian Lillard trade rumors. It appears Lillard is content to stick with the Blazers this season and see how the team operates under its first-year head coach. That's admirable, but it also means the entire season will be laced with tension.
Portland should run back a fun, high-scoring offense. Will the defense improve with Nance in the frontcourt? That's the big question. If not, the Blazers will return to playoff mediocrity and potentially push Lillard closer to the exit door.&nbsp;
3. Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks were one of my picks for the <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/roundtable-which-nba-team-had-the-worst-offseason" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worst NBA offseason</a> (Jackson Frank also picked them), and nothing in recent weeks has made me feel any better. Mark me down as adamantly opposed to the Jason Kidd hiring. Reggie Bullock is a fine individual player; he is not going to dramatically alter things on the offensive end. Plus, Dallas recently released 2020 draft pick Tyrell Terry, and we haven't seen much of 2020 first-rounder Josh Green. Where does the optimism come from outside of Luka Doncic?
2. Brooklyn Nets
I'm not going to get deep into the Kyrie Irving situation from a public health perspective, celebrity responsibility perspective or general common sense perspective. I don't have anything major to add to those discussions, other than to reinforce that Irving is carelessly and dangerously misusing his power as a public figure.&nbsp;
This section is about the Nets, who are paying the price for Irving's choices. The NBA title should have traveled through Brooklyn and its Big Three, and the Nets are still an elite basketball team with improved depth. But, remove an All-NBA-caliber player and the ceiling significantly lowers. Instead of being the overwhelming favorite, the Nets have become just another contender.
1. Philadelphia 76ers
Ben Simmons has given us the Hollywood trade drama we had missed since, well, last winter. Simmons was <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/ben-simmons-thrown-out-of-practice-suspended-philadelphia-76ers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tossed out of practice and suspended Tuesday</a>, so the months-long firestorm appears to still be getting hotter. But while that's a win for NBA/TMZ crossover fans, it's a serious loss for the 76ers, who now have to take this show into the regular season.
Joel Embiid has never played more than 64 games in a season, and is coming off of two shortened offseasons sandwiching an East Finals run. That should cause concern. The backcourt is fun, but nowhere near close to replicating Simmons' impact. Maybe Simmons actually does suit up in games &mdash; will he bring a positive on-court presence to a team that has publicly denounced his game?
Until Philly finally makes a trade &mdash; and who knows when it could happen &mdash; the Sixers' season could range from awkward to disastrous.

NBA Sour Rankings: Chaos among the contenders?

Basketball has evolved into a truly global sport, and the NBA pulls talent from all over the world. That&rsquo;s great for the overall quality of play, but it means that there is more competition for NBA roster spots, which are harder than ever to earn.
With Media Day in the rearview mirror and training camp underway, competition to make the final cut is heating up. Teams enter camp with as many as 20 players, but must trim the roster down to 15 by opening day (excluding the pair of two-way contracts allowed in addition for players who can move between the G League and NBA rosters).
While every team has important decisions to make, it&rsquo;s not as if every roster spot is up for grabs. On the contrary, most spots are taken by players who are signed to guaranteed contracts. It&rsquo;s the players on training-camp deals who have the most to prove this time of year; sometimes, it can be the occasional (and unlucky) guaranteed player who has underachieved so badly that his team is considering paying him to play elsewhere.&nbsp;
The last guy on the bench rarely has a great impact on his team&rsquo;s success, but it can happen &ndash; and it surely impacts the individual players. Considering the ramifications of these decisions, let&rsquo;s examine the three most interesting roster situations in the Eastern Conference.&nbsp;
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets are intriguing because &ndash; while it might look as if they don&rsquo;t need much from the end of their bench on paper &ndash; their situation is more complicated than it appears. Depending on where Kyrie Irving ultimately lands with his decision to get the COVID vaccine or not, he could miss all of his home games (and games against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden). In total, Irving could miss as many as 43 regular-season games if he stands firm on being unvaccinated. And while there is more than enough star power in Brooklyn to get by, removing a key player from the rotation for half of the season puts more pressure on a team&rsquo;s depth.
So what exactly will Brooklyn look to address with its final roster spot? The team's backcourt is in relatively good shape thanks to a combination of James Harden, Patty Mills, Jevon Carter and rookie Cam Thomas, but there are other needs to address. The Nets' frontcourt could use a youth infusion, and there&rsquo;s a limit on swingmen beyond Joe Harris and Bruce Brown. After cutting Jahlil Okafor last month, Brooklyn's decision should come down to DeAndre&rsquo; Bembry or Sekou Doumbouya. No disrespect to Bembry, but Doumbouya is a 6-foot-8 <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/detroit-pistons-moving-on-from-sekou-doumbouya-is-a-headscratcher" target="_blank" rel="noopener">former first-round pick who is 20 years old</a>. He fills multiple needs, and his youth gives the added benefit that if he works out, he could be part of the team&rsquo;s future.&nbsp;
Prediction: Sekou Doumbouya makes the cut.
New York Knicks&nbsp;
The Knicks are in an interesting spot. They just cut Luca Vildoza, who signed a four-year, non-guaranteed contract with the team at the end of the 2020-21 season. He was seen as someone who would make the team as recently as June, but things happen fast in the NBA. Considering New York will start the season without its presumptive starting center, Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks might want to add another big man. Nerlens Noel is more than qualified to hold down the fort, and Taj Gibson is a valuable, albeit slightly undersized backup, but does New York want to kick off the season without any other options? What if one of those two suffers another injury?

The Knicks have two rookies on their training camp roster who could fill that need in Jericho Sims and Aamir Simms. The former is a freakish athlete, similar in nature to Robinson, who is an above-average defender and rim-runner. Conversely, Simms possesses <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/aamir-simms-eager-to-exhibit-a-side-of-his-game-we-havent-seen-at-the-next-level" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a more polished offensive game</a>, but he lacks the burst and leaping ability of Sims. There&rsquo;s also Dwayne Bacon and Wayne Selden, who are actively competing for the team&rsquo;s final roster spot. Bacon looked good with Orlando last season, and I expect him to make the cut. The Knicks do have a two-way contract remaining, so maybe they'll use that on one of the Sim(m)s, while keeping Bacon on the main roster.&nbsp;
Prediction: Dwayne Bacon makes the cut.
Toronto Raptors
The Raptors are also in an interesting position, but more so because they have multiple spots to fill. Toronto has 12 guaranteed contracts, and both two-way deals are spoken for. That means Toronto can keep three of the following six players: Isaac Bonga, Sam Dekker, Freddie Gillespie, Reggie Perry, Ishmail Wainright and Yuta Watanabe. Gillespie and Watanabe are known commodities north of the border, having played with the Raptors last season, and Dekker is a former first-round pick with plenty of NBA experience. All but Perry have partial guarantees for 2021-22, but a partial guarantee will not secure you a spot in the NBA.
Bonga and Perry are both 6-foot-8 and 21 years old. Perry has just one year of NBA experience, whereas Bonga has three &ndash; but neither has made their mark yet. Beyond Goran Dragic, Fred VanVleet has the most experience of all Raptors with five professional seasons. With that in mind, expect Dekker &ndash; who has four years of NBA experience &ndash; to make the cut. Additionally, the Raptors will probably stick with the guys they know, meaning that Gillespie and Watanabe are likely to be in Toronto for the 2021-22 season, too.
Prediction: Sam Dekker, Freddie Gillespie and Yuta Watanabe all make the cut.
NBA roster decisions aren&rsquo;t entirely fair. Sometimes, players are cut because of an injury or other circumstance-related issues. But it really is just a business (rarely personal), and front offices do what they feel is in their best interest.
And at the end of the day, that&rsquo;s about as objective as it gets.&nbsp;

Prior to the start of last season, Kyrie Irving <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2921968-nets-kyrie-irving-on-fine-for-media-policy-violation-i-do-not-talk-to-pawns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called the media &ldquo;pawns&rdquo;</a> and stated that it would be his preference if he didn&rsquo;t speak to them at all, and it appears as though many are dedicated to holding a grudge for the rest of their days.
But did Kyrie Irving have a valid point? Were the members of the media who fall into that category the only ones offended by those comments? I personally didn&rsquo;t take offense because I know he wasn&rsquo;t talking about me. But as the saying goes, if the shoe fits...
Irving's words should have resulted in a lot of the media taking a hard and long look in the mirror instead of getting their notepads in a bunch (see what I did there).
A pawn is defined as &ldquo;a person used by others for their own purposes.&rdquo;
So from that standpoint, was Kyrie onto something? For instance, recall last year&rsquo;s dramatic articles and commentary projecting disaster on the Brooklyn Nets in the preseason. A hypothetical (and eventual) combination of three of the game&rsquo;s most gifted scorers led to the media assuming they'd be unwilling to share the ball. There were accusations that Kyrie would be uncoachable. There were reports claiming he no longer cared about the game of basketball and more of the like.
But didn&rsquo;t all of that disappear as soon as the season started? Some members of the media were even calling for Kyrie to retire before the season even began.&nbsp;

Creating baseless gossip and chit-chat for ratings, clicks and shares is very pawn-like.
Isn't that the script that the media is following?
Look at the evidence &mdash; articles with &ldquo;anonymous sources&rdquo; claiming that the Nets are looking to move Kyrie, commentators drumming up baseless trade chatter and spreading rumors that Kevin Durant secretly wants Kyrie gone, reports that if Kyrie is traded he&rsquo;ll retire, suggestions that a Ben Simmons swap is even in the realm of a possibility, etc.
Isn&rsquo;t it interesting that so much of the noise seems to magically disappear as soon as he starts playing? I&rsquo;m sure that will be the case again as soon as this season begins. That usually means the reports and commentary and &ldquo;anonymous sources&rdquo; never really had any substance in the first place, but were just more media noise that was manufactured to create chatter in the slow months tor ratings. Again, very pawn-like.
To weigh in on Kyrie Irving&rsquo;s never-ending battle with the media, I asked NBA Hall-of-Famer, Detroit Pistons legend and television analyst Isiah Thomas for his thoughts on the matter.
&ldquo;I respect the independence that Kyrie has shown throughout this entire process. Just like we [do] as professional athletes, we as human beings, we as fathers, husbands, brothers &mdash; sometimes we get it wrong. And at the same time, sometimes the media gets it wrong," Thomas told me. "And when the media gets called out on being wrong, their response is almost &lsquo;How dare you?&rsquo;
"Just like one side can be wrong, so can the other side. So, don&rsquo;t jump on me when I&rsquo;m wrong, but be quiet when you&rsquo;re wrong. You received information about me, and what I am thinking and what my intentions are, and whoever told you that didn&rsquo;t tell you correctly. Now, this is what I meant, this is my voice. This isn&rsquo;t whatever source, this is my voice. So respect my voice, and that&rsquo;s what Kyrie has been saying. And he has been very authentic in his voice."
It doesn&rsquo;t sound like he took Kyrie&rsquo;s &ldquo;pawn&rdquo; comment personally, does it?&nbsp;
Regarding the trade rumors surrounding the star point guard in Brooklyn, Thomas feels strongly that sending Kyrie elsewhere would be a mistake the Nets would regret.
&ldquo;The LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavs that came back and beat the Golden State Warriors after they had a 73-9 season &mdash; and LeBron James was off the charts in every statistical category &mdash; but the Cleveland Cavs do not win the championship without Kyrie Irving on that team," Thomas said. "Put me down on record. The Brooklyn Nets with the team constructed the way it currently is, cannot, and will not, win the championship if he is not there. Period.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Let&rsquo;s be clear: Kyrie is special. If he is not beating you from the perimeter off the dribble, he is knifing through the paint whenever he chooses with an array of dribble moves, crossovers, stepbacks and finishing in traffic. He is &ldquo;both-handed,&rdquo; which in basketball terms equates to being ambidextrous. He can finish with his left or right hand regardless of the size of the shot-blocker or the number of people occupying the lane. His layup package is on a different planet.
But don&rsquo;t take my word for it.
Allow legendary NBA point guard and New Jersey Nets fan favorite Kenny Anderson to tell you himself.
&ldquo;As far as [the great] point guards go: Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, [Allen] Iverson, Steph Curry, Oscar Robertson, and you gotta put Kyrie in the next mix," Anderson told me. "He&rsquo;s one of the best that ever played the game. He&rsquo;s so talented. His ball-handling skills are exceptional. He&rsquo;s hitting his shot from long range and short range. He can do it all. He&rsquo;s just a great player. I love watching him. He&rsquo;s one of my favorite players.
&ldquo;The Nets would be crazy to even think about trading him. They&rsquo;re favored to win everything. I don&rsquo;t even believe that they are seriously thinking about trading him. I think that&rsquo;s just something the media came up with to have something to talk about before the season starts. We got the best player in the league, Kevin Durant, with the best point guard in the league. Kyrie Irving. and an unstoppable scorer in James Harden. So no, trading Kyrie from the Nets perspective shouldn&rsquo;t even come into their minds and definitely shouldn&rsquo;t come out of their mouths as even a consideration.&rdquo;
There is statistical evidence to back up what both point guard legends are saying.
Last season, Kyrie had the best regular season of his 10-year career, averaging 26.9 points, 6.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. He became just the ninth player in NBA history to join the exclusive 50/40/90 club and shot 50.6% from the field, 40.2% from the three, and 92.2% from the free-throw line. He joined the likes of Curry, Larry Bird, Mark Price, Reggie Miller, Dirk Nowitzki and Malcolm Brogdon, along with his teammate, Durant, and head coach, Steve Nash.&nbsp;

To provide further insight, Syracuse University point guard icon Sherman Douglas &mdash; who played 11 seasons in the NBA and two with Nets &mdash; weighed in as the rumors as well.
&ldquo;Kyrie is vital to the Nets' success this season. To even think about trading him is absurd," Douglas said. "It&rsquo;s going to take the Lakers a while to get their chemistry [together], and we&rsquo;ll see how that works out. But if you trade him, you&rsquo;re not going to get equal value back, I don&rsquo;t care what package you come up with. He is a special talent, so what type of sense would it make to take a step back in a season where you should be favored to win it all? And if it weren&rsquo;t for injuries, you very well may have won it all last season. Of course, no disrespect to Milwaukee because they did an amazing job. But my point is, it would make no sense to break that team up.&rdquo;
Nicknamed &ldquo;The General&rdquo; for the way he ran the Orangemen and setting the NCAA record for assists in 1989, Douglas offered his evaluation of Kyrie Irving as a point guard and a leader.
&ldquo;Kyrie&rsquo;s skill level of not just ball-handling but of shooting, passing and scoring is one of the best I&rsquo;ve ever seen. He can do it all," Douglas said. "He is one of those point guards where you have to just say, 'I hope he&rsquo;s off tonight.' And [with] the way Brooklyn plays spreading the floor with shooters &mdash; which leaves the defender on an island by himself with Kyrie &mdash; you wanna send help, but you can&rsquo;t because of all of the shooters.
&ldquo;And as a leader, one of the many things that had impressed me with Kyrie is that he can take a step back and let other guys score. So when he sees Durant is scoring or Harden has it going or whoever, he has the humility to take a step back and allow those guys to get off when he knows he could be doing the same exact level of scoring. And I&rsquo;ve seen Harden do that as well. It&rsquo;s not a competition, and that&rsquo;s special. You don&rsquo;t just throw that away, because that chemistry isn&rsquo;t easy to come by and they jelled quickly.&rdquo;
So everyone agrees that, on the court, Kyrie is invaluable. But one of the things that makes him somewhat of an enigma to many is the fact that Kyrie cares about much more than basketball.&nbsp;
At one point last season, Irving divulged that he was participating in his first Ramadan, a sacred time for Muslims where they fast from dawn to sunset and can&rsquo;t eat or drink anything during the day. He also disclosed that the Israeli airstrikes that slaughtered dozens of Palestinians heavily weighed on him, and despite the fact that the playoffs were just days away and the Nets were significant favorites to win it all, his main focus wasn&rsquo;t at the time bouncing a ball.

&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of stuff going on in this world, and basketball is just not the most important thing to me right now," he said. "There&rsquo;s a lot of stuff going on overseas. All my people are still in bondage all across the world. There&rsquo;s a lot of dehumanization going on, so I apologize if I&rsquo;m not going to be focused on your questions. There&rsquo;s just too much going on in the world for me to just be talking about basketball... and it&rsquo;s not just in Palestine and not just in Israel, it&rsquo;s all over the world, and I feel it.
"I&rsquo;m very compassionate to all races, all cultures, and to see so many people being discriminated against based on their religion, the color of their skin, what they believe in it&rsquo;s just sad. We all say we&rsquo;re human beings and we&rsquo;re compassionate and we care, but what are you doing to help?&rdquo;&nbsp;
Anybody with eyes could see the genuine hurt that Kyrie Irving was feeling at that moment. This is who he is. He cares deeply.&nbsp;
Shortly after the Jan. 6 insurrection &mdash; in which the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. was violently attacked by a mob of supporters of Donald Trump as they sought to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election &mdash; Kyrie took a break from the team. Upon his return, he addressed the media.

&ldquo;When things become overwhelming in life, you know, you just got to take a step back and realize what&rsquo;s important. I&rsquo;m not alone in this. And that&rsquo;s just a big thing about also mental health, you know, just coming in and being balanced with yourself and then being able to perform," Irving said. "So, with everything going on in the world politically, socially, it&rsquo;s hard to ignore. I want to make changes daily. You know, there are so many oppressed communities, so many things going on that are bigger than just a ball going into the rim. So it&rsquo;s just the balance of it.&rdquo;&nbsp;
No one is going to deny that Kyrie's absence from the team was unexpected, and the lack of details opened the door for speculation and chatter. And to be fair, the way he handled it wasn&rsquo;t the best either. Breaking the NBA&rsquo;s COVID-19 protocols and attending a party is obviously not the greatest thing to do, even if it&rsquo;s part of the taking a step away process.
However, at the same time, Irving&rsquo;s mental health is something that needs to be intact in order for him to perform at the optimal level fans desire. And taking a break doesn&rsquo;t always look the same for everyone. But in this society, athletes are still greatly ridiculed when they take time off for their mental health, just ask Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles. But that doesn&rsquo;t change the fact that mental health is something that should be valued, and Kyrie is not someone who is going to stop caring &mdash; because that&rsquo;s just who he is. 
On my show "<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/podcasts/the-rematch" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Rematch</a>," while I was interviewing Stephen Jackson, <a href="nba-kyrie-irving-george-floyd-stephen-jackson-house-bought-gianna-lil-baby-barbra-streisand-brooklyn-nets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he revealed that Kyrie bought a house for the family of George Floyd</a>, who was murdered last year at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.&nbsp;
Irving also <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamzagoria/2021/01/01/brooklyn-nets-guard-kyrie-irving-pays-off-tuition-of-nine-students-at-hbcu-lincoln-university/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paid off the college tuition of nine students from an HBCU</a> (Lincoln University) on Dec. 10 as part of his foundation&rsquo;s 11 Days of Giving.
At the height of an international covid pandemic, <a href="https://nothinbutnets.com/2020/07/27/nets-kyrie-irving-wnba-players/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he committed $1.5 million to help support the income of WNBA players</a> who chose to sit out the 2020 season due to health and other personal reasons.
This past August, <a href="https://www.michigandaily.com/news/kyrie-irving-donates-13000-to-umich-student-run-charity-for-solar-water-center-in-pakistan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he donated funds to help build a solar water center in Pakistan</a> that will provide clean water and electricity to over 1,000 people.
And I could go on and on and on, but in describing his character, many members of the media choose to focus on Kyrie not wanting to speak to them instead of constantly bringing up these facts.
It always goes back to him calling them pawns, or downplaying his need to take a mental break, or not being committed to the team or pulling up previous statements to add ridicule to him. A good example is his strong opposition to Thanksgiving.
(All the while ignoring the fact that he is very serious about his Native American heritage; his mother, Elizabeth, who passed away when he was 4, was a citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Irving and his older sister, Asia, were actually welcomed into the tribe with a ceremony in 2018. He was even given the Lakota name "Little Mountain" by tribal elders. So, yes, it should be more than understandable why he would not be as enthusiastic about a holiday that marks the slaughter of his people, but I digress.)&nbsp;

I asked Douglas why many in the media choose to focus on the negative instead of the positive so often with Kyrie. 
&ldquo;Unfortunately, the way of the media is to focus on the negative and not the positive. &nbsp;Negativity is what sells," Douglas said. "They are not looking to praise Kyrie for what he does off the court, and he is not looking for that. In fact, he wants to do things quietly and is looking to do the right thing, and you have to commend him for that. What he is doing off the court is just phenomenal. I think Kyrie has to just tune all of that out and keep doing what he has been doing. But he is an example to all on how to give of yourself and to be selfless and care for the well-being of others in thought, word and in deed."
Thomas reflected with the same sentiments.
&ldquo;I love the sensitivity that he shows to the community and in particular, people who are in poverty. I am one who grew up in poverty, so I benefitted from the charitable generosity and good will of others. And it is appreciated more than many people know because he doesn&rsquo;t have to do that," Thomas said. "And he doesn&rsquo;t do it to be seen doing it. Things leak out of course because that&rsquo;s the age we are living in, but he would rather keep everything quiet, and that shows how genuine of a person he is &mdash; because he is doing it out of the kindness of his heart, not for recognition or to embarrass the person who he is helping, which happens too often. So I have all the respect and admiration in the world for him.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Anderson had some closing comments, in addition.
"They just want him to just shut up and play basketball. He has things other than basketball that he feels passionately about, and there&rsquo;s nothing wrong with that," Anderson said. "He cares for people in a way that is foreign to a lot of folks, but he&rsquo;s supposed to care about people. He wants to make a difference in the world and that&rsquo;s what he is doing. He&rsquo;s looking at what&rsquo;s going on overseas, what&rsquo;s going on here in America, things affect him &mdash; but they are supposed to affect him. He&rsquo;s a human being with a huge heart and the financial ability to make a change.
"I think he is doing great, and he needs to keep doing everything he&rsquo;s doing &mdash; whether it&rsquo;s challenging whoever, or helping whoever, or speaking up for whoever. It obviously didn&rsquo;t take away from what he is doing on the court. He can&rsquo;t help injuries, but when he laced them up, he dominated. And if he wouldn&rsquo;t have gotten hurt, things would&rsquo;ve been different last year. So he just needs to ignore everyone and keep doing what he is doing. He definitely has my admiration and support.&rdquo;
All three are absolutely right about Kyrie Irving, and I couldn't agree more.

Isiah Thomas, Kenny Anderson, Sherman Douglas have Kyrie Irving's back

The SportsCenter clips vs. the spreadsheet. The eye test vs. the analytics. "Seeing is Believing" vs. "Numbers Never Lie."
Sports fans have created this "rivalry" between film geeks and analytics nerds when, in reality, those two libraries of knowledge complement each other seamlessly. No human can watch every single moment of every single contest, and likewise, no data point can capture every literal aspect of a basketball game. The best writers and experts I know can slide willingly between both schools, using them to understand the nuances of the sport while covering for blind spots and bias.
Stats are cool. They're easy to visualize, they make for convenient comparing, and they can boil a lot of basketball down to a single number. But there's a reason people don't have computers running professional franchises. Metrics are often misunderstood, misused and overemphasized, leading to some crazy conclusions simply because a random set of numbers points in that direction. There is no such thing as a bad stat, but it can quickly be invalidated if the user doesn't understand it.
I'm not a statistician &mdash; I actually dropped my Statistics minor in college because I was struggling to stay on top of a computer programming class. But I love basketball, I love reading about basketball, and I love trying to learn how some of the world's greatest athletes do what they do. So I'm putting together my philosophies on using stats to better understand the game, and hopefully it'll at least give you a way to approach debates with the giant asteroid field of numbers out there.
To me, almost all basketball stats fall under one of three umbrella groups:

<li>Impact Estimators</li>
</ul>
No one category is better than another, but they each colorize a player or team's impact in different ways. Let's get into each, and I'll give you one of my favorite (free!) "advanced" stats from each category:
<h2>Events</h2>
Event stats are pretty straight-up: What happened? Most of your box-score stats are here; points, rebounds, assists, steals, fouls, etc. all total up what went down in a single game or season. They're often attached to a scoring play, a missed shot or a turnover &mdash; something you can easily point to and say, "Oh, something just happened there."
The problem with event stats are that they usually get attributed to a single player, when in reality, all five players on the team could have contributed. Did LeBron James receive a bad pass that he had to hoist up late in the shot clock? Welp, that's a missed field goal. Did Giannis Antetokounmpo have a wide-open dunk because Khris Middleton drew two defenders away with a nice cut? Middleton gets no credit. It's one of the many reasons people watch film &mdash; to see what the stats don't capture.&nbsp;
However, event stats can be useful for collecting major plays, and many more exist that don't get covered in your typical box score. I've always been a fan of deflections, <a href="which%20you%20can%20find%20on%20the%20NBA's%20official%20stats%20site." target="_blank" rel="noopener">which you can find on the NBA's official stats site.</a> Deflections are, as written in the NBA's glossary, "The number of times a defensive player or team gets their hand on the ball on a non-shot attempt."
Most would agree that, even if a defender doesn't generate a steal, getting an active hand on the ball disrupts the offense and takes time off the shot clock. Here were the NBA's deflections per-game leaders from last season:
1. Fred VanVleet, Toronto Raptors &mdash; 3.8 per game
2. Robert Covington, Portland Trail Blazers &mdash; 3.6 per game
3. T.J. McConnell, Indiana Pacers &mdash; 3.5 per game
4. Jimmy Butler, Miami Heat &mdash; 3.5 per game
5. Ben Simmons, Philadelphia 76ers &mdash; 3.5 per game

How did Russell Westbrook average a triple-double? How did Stephen Curry lead the league in threes made? Explainer stats dive into how a player or team made the plays that they made and add some context to the event stats.
These categories can range from the very general, such as field goal percentage (that stat is a whole different conversation), to the extremely detailed, i.e. three-point percentage after taking seven or more dribbles. I love a good explainer because it allows me to get specific as far as what I like about a player. Instead of saying, "Nikola Jokic is a bucket because he scores a lot," I can say, "Nikola Jokic is a bucket because he shoots threes off-the-catch well, drives well, and is one of the best post-up players in the league based on these stats." Which sounds more convincing to you?
What's wrong with explainers? The nitty-gritty ones often rely on player tracking data, which can range from iffy to downright wrong at times. If you're tracking shooting defense, for example, how does the tracking system know what the player's goals are and who they should match up against? Maybe a play breaks down and a defender has to sprint out to contest a shooter they weren't even supposed to be guarding, but they might be labeled as the primary defender anyway.
So while these stats would ideally be extremely helpful, the data should always be taken with a grain of salt. Watch the film too.
At-rim finishing is one of my favorite explainer stats. It's easy to track and NBA teams are always looking for players who can get easy points near the basket. Here were the leaders in restricted area field goal percentage last year (<a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/shooting/?Season=2020-21&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;DistanceRange=By%20Zone&amp;sort=Restricted%20Area%20FG%20PCT&amp;dir=1&amp;PerMode=Totals&amp;CF=Restricted%20Area%20FGA*GE*100" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per NBA Stats, min. 100 shot attempts</a>):
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks &mdash; 80.7%
2. DeAndre Jordan, Brooklyn Nets (now Los Angeles Lakers) &mdash; 79.9%
3. Robert Williams III, Boston Celtics &mdash; 78.0%
4. Michael Porter Jr., Denver Nuggets &mdash; 77.5%

<h2>Impact Estimators</h2>
With any stat, the ultimate question you're trying to answer is: How good is Player X? But impact estimators are pretty explicitly trying to assess a player's impact, whether it be in a specific skill or their overall on-court value. Some of the most basic estimators out there include offensive and defensive rating, as well as plus/minus.
But impact estimators can get complicated and daunting. Companies, front offices and branches hire folks whose sole responsibility is to come up with a metric that can accurately protray basketball impact. Formulas are tested and re-tested by professional analytics minds who work extremely hard to create the gold standard of a hoops quantifier. It's an admirable, albeit scary, pursuit.
To effectively wield impact estimators, you have to fully understand how they are built and what they are trying to say. A classic misstep is when people use defensive rating to say Player X is a good defender. Defensive rating is a misleading name; it's a team-based stat that shows how many points per 100 possessions the team gave up while Player X was on the court. There's only so much a player can do for their defensive rating if they're on a terrible defensive team.&nbsp;
So don't be fooled because someone slapped a cool name on a stat. Understand what other stats go into the formula and what it's ultimately saying.&nbsp;
Here's a popular impact estimator: True Shooting percentage. The formula is relatively simple and it provides a summary of a player's efficiency for all shot values (<a href="https://www.thespax.com/nba/explaining-true-shooting-percentage-ts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here's a good article about it</a>). While most efficiency stats skew heavily toward bigs because they take closer shots, True Shooting percentage has a slightly better balance while still making sense. Here were <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2021_leaders.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the leaders from 2020-21</a>:

Is Ivica Zubac the best shooter on the planet? Probably not. But he was extremely efficient with the shots he got last season. Stephen Curry is ranked 11th (65.5 TS%), and with him taking so many threes, that's quite impressive.
So in my overall approach to using NBA numbers, I sort an interesting stat into its larger category, I remember the pitfalls of using that type of metric and I understand that a single number will never provide the full flavor of seeing what the player did on the court. And like I said, I am no expert; the goal should always be to keep a growth mindset.
Stats, just like highlights, should never end a basketball discussion &mdash; only make it more insightful.

Undrafted Free Agent Tracker: Reported contracts and Summer League deals

Never afraid to share the rock, Chris Paul tossed the ball ahead into the frontcourt. Jae Crowder received it and executed a familiar dribble handoff to Devin Booker &mdash; the two have done this familiar curl set all season long.
But the Milwaukee Bucks were ready for it; Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez suddenly stood between Booker and the basket. Improvising, Booker crossed over to his left and beat Middleton off the dribble before vertically splitting the two defenders just beneath the free throw line.
Majestically, the 24-year-old rose up and nailed an off-balance 11-footer over the two. Sure, the basket was only worth two points, but for the Suns &mdash; and especially Booker &mdash; the first bucket of Game 1 of the 2021 NBA Finals counted for so much more.
Loudly and resoundingly, the 24-year-old announced to the Bucks, as he announced it to the world.

Fortunately for Devin Booker, he never listened to us. Like Damian Lillard, he never demanded a trade.
Lesson learned.

From the time Damian Lillard was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, he&rsquo;s been giving us stuff to talk about. Whether it was how impressive he was as a rookie, his clutch gene or his ability to morph into a franchise player after the departure of LaMarcus Aldridge &mdash; he&rsquo;s long been a story.
Perhaps unfortunately for him now, everyone seems to have his name in their mouth.
The public has decided it&rsquo;s time for Lillard to leave Portland, while the superstar himself has stopped short of making any such declaration.
And it begs the consideration: perhaps slowly but surely, the tide is beginning to turn.
Perhaps Lillard has come to understand some of the lessons learned by others who decided to travel the easy road to a championship.
There&rsquo;s a difference between winning and winning on one&rsquo;s own terms.&nbsp;He&rsquo;s obviously pursuing the latter.
A two-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Finals MVP, Kevin Durant isn&rsquo;t given the respect that one would&rsquo;ve assumed he would&rsquo;ve gotten after accomplishing such things. And for reasons easy enough to understand, of LeBron James&rsquo; four championships, the one in Cleveland seems to be the most meaningful &mdash; both to him and to us.
Carmelo Anthony wanted out of Denver, Paul George bolted from Indiana and James Harden asked out of Houston &mdash; each left their team wanting to try something new, and in each case, their legacy hasn't materially benefitted from their decision.
So, Lillard might be looking at his situation and wondering whether forcing a trade &mdash; his four-year, $196 supermax contract (with a player option in the final season) kicks in starting this year, mind you &mdash; is actually the answer for him. Especially since he&rsquo;s made a home in Portland.

What many people fail to understand about the modern NBA player is that, in most instances, the decision to develop one&rsquo;s talents to the extent necessary to make it as a pro is a decision that&rsquo;s made early. At 10 years old, many players are already participating at competitive camps and local leagues. As teenagers, players travel around the country playing AAU ball. Some attend multiple high schools and junior colleges all before even sniffing the NCAA.
The end game, in many instances, is to not only make it in the NBA, but to find stability. To find a home.
So when a player like Lillard lands in Portland, in some instances, his personal and professional growth causes him to become interwoven with the franchise, those fans and that city. That&rsquo;s why, more often than the general public knows, grown men shed tears when trades happen.
Could Lillard have more success in Boston playing alongside Jayson Tatum? He probably could, and if the Celtics were willing to build a package around Jaylen Brown, Romeo Langford and/or Robert Williams&hellip; maybe a conversation would be had.
Or perhaps the Philadelphia 76ers would be willing to <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-roundtable-what-should-the-76ers-do-with-ben-simmons" target="_blank" rel="noopener">build a package featuring Ben Simmons</a> along with Shake Milton and/or Matisse Thybulle. Surely, Lillard would believe that he could win it all with Joel Embiid, right?
The Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks all have chips they could offer in a theoretical deal for Lillard, but it seems that the superstar point guard subscribes to the same school of thought as Giannis Antetokounmpo: Yes, I want to win. But I want to win here.
At 31 years old, Lillard is no spring chicken. At some point, he might make the difficult decision to ask out. But according to <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/damian-lillard-neutral-on-rumors-surrounding-future-with-trail-blazers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent reports</a>, that day hasn&rsquo;t come yet.
Someone needs to speak up and let it be known: there&rsquo;s something admirable about traversing the more rugged path.

One of the best things about the 2021 NBA Finals is that, from a human standpoint, it&rsquo;s impossible to not feel good for whichever team wins.
When Giannis had the world at his fingertips, he chose to double-down on his commitment to Milwaukee. And Chris Paul saw <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/regardless-of-2021-nba-finals-outcome-chris-paul-already-a-winner" target="_blank" rel="noopener">daylight breaking in Phoenix before the rest of us</a>, believing he could help pull out the team&rsquo;s championship potential.
Rings culture and the pursuit of the Larry O&rsquo;Brien trophy has poisoned the mind of an entire generation of basketball fans. Many of us have reached the point to where we only value the destination and not the journey that it took to get there.
Had Paul Pierce given up on the Celtics or Dirk Nowitzki on the Mavericks, neither would&rsquo;ve won a championship (or Finals MVP) with the only franchise they&rsquo;d known to that point.
Had Devin Booker listened to the outside noise and pouted until he got a trade to a surefire contender, he would&rsquo;ve never known the joy, fulfillment or feeling of completion that comes with watching an organization go from seeds in the dirt to a thriving garden.
And let&rsquo;s take a lesson from the experiences of Booker, Pierce and Nowitzki &mdash; in the NBA, as long as you have hope and building blocks, the addition of the right player or two can turn the tides in a tremendous way. You need many things to win a championship, including good fortune. And you simply never know when, like Chris Paul, it&rsquo;ll be your time to shine in the Sun.
Indeed, like Anthony Davis and James Harden, Damian Lillard may one day decide that he&rsquo;s given all that he can to Portland. But only he knows how much gas is left in his tank and how much tread is left on his tires.
In a world where we&rsquo;ve seen far too many opt for the get-rich-quick scheme, Lillard has decided that he doesn&rsquo;t want that to be his legacy. Nobody could ever charge him with taking any shortcuts.
Through it all, he remains dedicated. It&rsquo;s a great example to set for younger players, and a positive for both the NBA and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Without taking it himself, Lillard has learned an important lesson about taking the easy road in the NBA. There are some things more meaningful than taking the path of least resistance.

As things currently stand, the Detroit Pistons will shell out their biggest player paycheck for 2021-22 to someone who isn't on the roster. The Portland Trail Blazers owe money to one player through 2024, even though he never played a game for the team. The Indiana Pacers are still paying Monta Ellis.
In the complex world of the NBA salary cap, "dead money" is one oft-forgotten consequence of buyouts and cuts around the league. These situations happen when a player is released with guaranteed money left on his contract. The team has to pay the rest of the salary, so they'll either foot the bill as the contract originally stated, or stretch the remaining salary over a longer period to make the payments more manageable per-year. These still count against the team's salary cap (<a href="https://www.slamonline.com/nba/cba-explained-the-stretch-provision/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here's a good explainer</a>).
In many cases, the cap and financial impacts look insignificant on their own. But dead money can range from a nuisance to a handicap for franchises that often brush right up against salary-cap constraints.
When the league calendar flips in August, half of the NBA will be completely free of dead money, according to salary figures provided by <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spotrac</a> and <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Basketball Reference</a>. The Memphis Grizzlies, for example, had over $29 million tied to Gorgui Dieng and Dion Waiters through this past season.
However, half of the league remains tethered to players and cap holds. A browse though the books reveals some surprising names still on NBA payrolls.&nbsp;
Let's start with the Pistons, who are far and away the most hamstrung organization. They'll be paying Blake Griffin approximately $29.8 million next season, easily the highest dead-money total in the NBA. Unless the franchise makes a major splash in the offseason, that number shatters the $20 million owed to Detroit's highest-paid active player, Jerami Grant.&nbsp;

Griffin isn't alone on the payroll. Former 2018 first-round pick Zhaire Smith is owed $1.068 million and change into the 2022-23 season. Then there's Dewayne Dedmon, who checks in as one of my favorite players in this unique circumstance.
The Pistons acquired Dedmon via trade from Atlanta last November and promptly waived the 31-year-old center. But they stretched the remainder of his three-year, $40 million deal&nbsp;way out. Detroit plans to pay Dedmon $2.87 million each year through the 2024-25 NBA season &mdash; without him ever suiting up for the Motor City.
Dedmon is one of two players who will assuredly get a paycheck from an NBA team without ever playing a game for them. The other is Andrew Nicholson, who has been out of the NBA since 2017. Still, the Portland Trail Blazers must pay him $2.84 million per year through the 2023-24 season. That means he'll still be cashing NBA paychecks seven years after his last game.
Most dead-contract situations are less complicated than Detroit's traffic jam. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the only other franchise with three players in dead-money territory. But the penalties are much less severe; Admiral Schofield will receive $300,000 next season, Patrick Patterson will make $737,066 next year, and Kyle Singler (inactive since 2018) will earn $999,200 per year through 2022-23.
Aside from Griffin, Nicolas Batum wields the largest single dead-cap hold. When the Charlotte Hornets waived him last November, they stretched the rest of his five-year, $120 million deal. The franchise owes Batum a bit over $9 million through 2022-23.
Including Batum, most of the biggest dead-cap condundrums stem from the lucrative 2016 free-agency period. It resulted in a ton of eye-popping deals for players, and even after things went south with the respective teams, they're still making money from that fateful July.
Batum, Joakim Noah (tied to the Knicks), Ryan Anderson (Heat) and Luol Deng (Lakers) are all making at least $5 million in 2021-22 because of contracts they signed in 2016.

How are other contenders doing in the dead-money department? Ten of the 2021 playoff squads are free of dead-cap hits. The Golden State Warriors owe $666,667 to Shaun Livingston next season, while the Boston Celtics owe just under $1.2 million combined to Guerschon Yabusele and Demetrius Jackson.
The Milwaukee Bucks join the aforementioned three franchises with a notable chunk of dead money; they're giving up over $5 million to the duo of Jon Leuer and Larry Sanders. Five million dollars may not seem like a ton in the grand scheme of NBA money-spending. But during the quest for an NBA title, droplets of cap space matter as teams try to facilitate trades, make small additions and even avoid the luxury tax.
So next time you hear a buyout rumor, think about the potential dead-money impact. One case on the horizon could involve Kevin Love. According to Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle, there is "growing sentiment around the league" that Love and the Cleveland Cavaliers <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/warriors-flirting-with-the-idea-of-acquiring-kevin-love" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could reach a buyout agreement</a>.
Love still has over $60 million left on his contract over the next two seasons. As the Cavs eventually try to move from rebuilder to contender, do they want that kind of money on their books over the next two seasons? Or, if they waive and stretch Love, how would the stretched contract affect their cap standing over the next decade?
It's a tricky space to navigate, and only one of the many challenges on the plates of every NBA front office.

Joining the likes of many successful players before him (such as Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Kevin Love, John Wall and Isaiah Thomas), NBA hopeful and Clemson Tiger alum Aamir Simms is tirelessly grinding at Impact Basketball to prepare for the upcoming 2021 draft.&nbsp;
Working with longtime pro trainer Joe Abunassar, one of the most respected influences in the game, Simms has toiled away in the gym with the scorching Las Vegas heat seeping into the facility, focusing on two areas of his skill set that he believes weren&rsquo;t on display in college: shooting the basketball and defending 1-through-5.
&ldquo;I feel like a part of my game was definitely kinda swept under the rug a little bit 'cause of what I had to adapt to when I was at Clemson, and I wasn't able to showcase as much,&rdquo; Simms told BasketballNews.com in an exclusive phone interview. &ldquo;There was a lot asked of me while I was there, so I had to kinda sacrifice that part. Not that it was a bad thing, but I'm definitely ready to showcase [those skills].
&ldquo;I'm still trying to improve in [my] consistent shooting. At times, throughout my two years as a junior and senior, I had some streaky shooting times, especially at the beginning of the year. As the season went on and progressed, I definitely shot the ball better to raise my percentages... I didn't shoot it as much at school as I wanted, but just being out here and working with Joe, I have more confidence than I ever have [had] in my shot. And going into these workouts, being able to show that and just being able to defend. That's my biggest area of improvement, to show people that I can guard guys that [are] quicker or maybe the same size and faster, so those two areas are just something we've emphasized while I've been here. Guarding guys that's a lot quicker, smaller than me, it's just been really helpful for my hips and my lateral movement.&rdquo;
Simms has been in this position before. In March of last year, he declared for the 2020 NBA Draft, but withdrew his name within a couple of months to return for his senior season with the Tigers -- a decision that he feels good about now looking back.
&ldquo;Last year was tough,&rdquo; Simms said of the pre-draft process. &ldquo;I felt as though, at least in the draft, it came down to picking names out of a hat. They didn't really have guys come work out, they didn't have guys they really interviewed or anything like that. It was over Zoom and whatnot, and it's not the same when it's [not] in person.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I was projected [as a] late-round [pick] in the second, so being able to come back to school and showcase a little bit more of what they'd asked me in my interviews, I think it definitely helped, and I had a good feeling going back to school. I thought I improved in the areas they asked, and just coming out now, I definitely see a difference and it's definitely given me a step ahead of other guys who are coming out for the first time."

This weekend, Simms is set to be one of 40 participants at the G League Elite Camp in Chicago, which will allow him the chance to prove himself in front of executives, scouts, coaches and notable personnel in the NBA and G League. Standouts from the event will be awarded an opportunity to participate in next week&rsquo;s NBA Draft Combine.
The version we see of Simms today is not the same version of Simms from 2020, nor the same as the Virginia native that took one visit to Clemson and decided to make the university his home for the next four years.&nbsp;
Every season, Simms got better, and molded his craft with his experiences. It&rsquo;s that amount of experience that he claims gives him an edge on inexperienced prospects who need polishing, and will allow him to come in on day one and help a team right away.
&ldquo;A lot of teams don't value a four-year veteran in college as much. That's not really the sexy thing nowadays. But for the teams that do, I definitely think I'll be better at making an impact early 'cause I understand the game a lot better,&rdquo; Simms said. &ldquo;Being at Clemson, we kinda transitioned to an NBA-type offense where there was a lot of motion and you've got to make a read instead of having a set play. We had our plays, but the majority of our offense was motion offense and playing out of the high post and down screens and away screens and curls and everything.&nbsp;
&ldquo;So I think I do have that advantage on the young guys. A lot of guys that go into [the draft] young have got the potential 'cause of their skill set and being able to score, but when it comes to thinking games and the mental game, I think I've got the upperhand on that.&rdquo;
Experience is something you can&rsquo;t teach, but Simms also possesses another unteachable quality, and that&rsquo;s a professional physique. In addition to his lengthy wingspan, he stands at 6-foot-8 and weighs in at 245 pounds, sporting a frame that most rookie players don&rsquo;t have.
&ldquo;There's a lot of switching in the league, and a lot of guys get stuck on bigger opponents, and they just kinda crab dribble down to the rim and dunk the ball. In my workouts that I've been going through, I've been guarding guys two inches, three inches taller than me [and] probably 10 or 20 pounds heavier or just around the same weight, and I think I do a pretty good job of standing 'em up,&rdquo; Simms said. &ldquo;So obviously, someone like Joel Embiid who's got 40 pounds on me, I'm definitely gonna have to try a little harder. But for the most [part], I think I can hold my own against anybody that's in my same weight class or a little bit heavier.&nbsp;
&ldquo;At the end of the day, it's a mental thing. As long as you put your mind to it, you can do it, so I definitely think I can make an immediate impact."

Simms anticipates going up against more NBA talents when the draft approaches nearer in July. He&rsquo;s looking forward to gaining knowledge and taking tips from whoever comes through Impact and other workouts he&rsquo;s planning on having. At the moment, he&rsquo;s not close with many guys at the next level, meaning this whole college-to-pro ordeal is an adventure.
&ldquo;I'm definitely a lone wolf out here,&rdquo; Simms said.
One of the guys he has a great relationship with is Milwaukee Bucks big man Mamadi Diakite, a high-school teammate of his at Blue Ridge whom Simms battled with for a number of seasons when Clemson faced off against the Virginia Cavaliers. Those matchups helped Simms mature as a player over the years, as did the lessons he took from his elder Tigers.
Donte Grantham, Gabe DeVoe, Elijah Thomas, Marcquise Reed, Shelton Mitchell and David Skara all taught him what it meant to play in the vaunted ACC. Though coaches knew he had the chops to do a little bit of everything, Simms primarily set screens and pick-and-popped, while his teammates did the facilitating and distributing during his freshman year.&nbsp;
Clemson&rsquo;s staff knew that he had a knack for backdoor finds and a high-basketball acumen, the team just didn&rsquo;t require him to bring that to the table in his early seasons. However, with each season, his responsibilities increased, as did his statistical output. Once he was given free reign to expand his game in his junior and senior years, he was able to produce the numbers to confirm his contributions. Simms averaged 13.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a steal in over 30 minutes per game in his upperclassmen seasons.
Ask him what he got better at from year one to year four, and Simms will tell you: everything.
&ldquo;Whether it was putting the ball on the floor, half-court or full-court, shooting the ball in many different actions (pick-and-pop, catch-and-shoot or off down screens), and just my toughness,&rdquo; Simms said. &ldquo;I came in as a pretty tough kid [and] I'm pretty competitive naturally, but going against Eli and other greats of the ACC at the 5 and 4, that time I was there, it improved my toughness and the physical component that I think other people lack at times.&nbsp;
&ldquo;And just being able to bring it every night. I just thought I saw a huge improvement in that. My defense improved every year, being able to guard different guys, [as well as] being able to shoot and kinda make plays from the top of the key or the elbow was just a huge improvement I saw... Just from the first day I was there, to my last, the environment, the atmosphere did nothing but [help me] grow and progress in my four years. It taught me a lot of life lessons, and the doors that opened in my four years was just unbelievable and definitely unexpected. That's a place, if you really buy into [it] and trust and give it your all, it's gonna set you up for future endeavors for the rest of your life... I would definitely say my four years at Clemson was nothing short of amazing.&rdquo;
There wasn&rsquo;t a single summer where Simms took a vacation in the offseason. He&rsquo;d stay in the gym, relentlessly working on his perimeter shooting with Clemson assistants Steve Smith, Antonio Reynolds Dean and Dick Bender. He got as many reps up as possible, until his "arms fell off&rdquo; to get his muscle memory down on his jumpers.&nbsp;
While Simms had a fair share of outstanding performances with the school, none compare to what happened in his third season at Clemson. In mid-January 2020, the Tigers knocked off the North Carolina Tar Heels in Raleigh for the first time in program history in 60 meetings. The following game three days later, Clemson returned home and took down the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils in front of a raucous crowd for&nbsp; Brad Brownell's record-setting 178th win as head coach. It was the first time the men&rsquo;s basketball team defeated both schools since 1995-96.&nbsp;

Simms scored 20-plus points and nabbed 8-plus rebounds in back-to-back games as a major part of that, among the stat-sheet filling he did in those consecutive wins.
&ldquo;I just felt like I was just on another level in that time frame,&rdquo; Simms said. &ldquo;Performing the way that I did for my team and my school is just something I won't forget, being able to do what we did at UNC and knocking them off at home for the first time, and then turn [it] around beating Duke, who at the time was ranked third in the country. Beating those schools for the first time back-to-back in almost 20 years was just unbelievable... I felt as though I always had the upper hand. Those two games alone, I think, stand out for themselves."

The body of work Simms had at Clemson speaks for itself. He leaves behind a decorated career that saw him make two All-ACC teams, win the Skip Prosser Man of the Year award as the top scholar-athlete in the conference and become just the fourth player in the program&rsquo;s history to record over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 150 assists, 75 steals and 75 blocks.&nbsp;
What Simms accomplished, he admits he won&rsquo;t appreciate fully until down the road. He&rsquo;s had conversations with his parents about the success he had as a Tiger, and everybody is proud. But right now is a time to focus on the next chapter, and that&rsquo;s all he&rsquo;s zoned in on.
Though he had to adapt in college to what the team asked of him, Simms considers himself a tweener 4 with an ability to play as an undersized 5. He does feel that he&rsquo;ll be able to play the 3 as he sharpens his skill set further in the pros. He models his game after four NBA guys: Jae Crowder, Paul Millsap, Al Horford and Tobias Harris. Simms likens their physique and capabilities to his: scoring at all three levels and providing versatility. They can put it on the floor, face-up, play from the block and catch-and-shoot.

Along with that set of skills, Simms has the determination to prove his worth in the pros.
&ldquo;Since I've been at Clemson or since I've come out of school, I've been ranked in all these other things, but I've always felt as though my game was underappreciated,&rdquo; Simms said. &ldquo;So I think going into it, being able to be an older guy both still with a great skill set and understanding the game or being able to adapt to it, it's kinda the thing that separates me from a lot of guys.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I'm not just a shooter on the perimeter. I'm not just a good passer. I'm an all-around player, I think, and that's something I think that separates me. I'm not a one-dimensional guy. I think there are many attributes to my game that people have yet to see because of my [adaptation] at Clemson. But I think coming out, once I get into this Combine, I'll really get myself going. A lot of people are gonna see why I say what I say, and that's just something I think that separates myself is being able to adapt to the game while being an older guy who's still kinda young and affecting the game in many ways that most people don't really see."
His motivation isn&rsquo;t just that, either. It&rsquo;s about his future, his family&rsquo;s future and others. Minoring in Nonprofit Leadership, Simms understands that there are bigger things than the game of basketball, and those philanthropic moments he desires to create will ultimately stem from the career path he&rsquo;s chosen.
&ldquo;Basketball is not the only thing that inspires me in life. Helping others is a huge thing, and I know a great way to do that is by playing basketball, making the most out of what I can with my time there and then being set up to be able to help others -- whether it's in this country or others, being able to help people who need it more than I do,&rdquo; Simms said.
&ldquo;Looking at guys like Harrison Barnes and Jimmy Butler and other guys who are deeply involved in their community, that's something that pushes me. They just kinda go hand-in-hand with basketball and that's a huge passion and motivation for me. So I can work my butt off on the court, so when I'm off the court, I can help people who need it more than I do."
