Pelicans fire David Griffin in front office overhaul

The New Orleans Pelicans have parted ways with Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin after a disappointing six-year tenure, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Under Griffin's leadership, the team amassed a 209-263 record and secured only two playoff game victories. Despite acquiring Zion Williamson as the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Pelicans struggled to become consistent contenders, largely due to Williamson's persistent injuries.

In a statement, team owner Gayle Benson expressed gratitude for Griffin's contributions but emphasized the need for a fresh approach to achieve sustainable success both on and off the court. The Pelicans concluded the season with a 21-61 record, marking their worst performance during Griffin's tenure.

Reports indicate that the Pelicans are considering Joe Dumars, former Detroit Pistons executive and architect of the 2004 championship team, as a potential replacement. Dumars, currently serving as the NBA's head of basketball operations, is viewed as a serious frontrunner for the position.

Head coach Willie Green's position appears secure for now, despite the team's ongoing struggles and lack of playoff success under his leadership.

With the fourth-worst record in the NBA, the Pelicans hold a 12.5% chance of securing the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, potentially landing top prospect in Duke’s Cooper Flagg. The franchise is also focusing on enhancing the fan experience and exploring upgrades to the Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans' next steps in reshaping their front office and roster will be crucial in determining the team's direction and competitiveness in the coming seasons.
