OKC Thunder Hartenstein, Mitchell stay grounded as repeat bid starts

The Oklahoma City Thunder are on the verge of doing exactly what they set out to accomplish when the season began: put themselves in position to defend their title with purpose, clarity, and control. As the defending champions and the West’s top seed, Oklahoma City has carried expectations all year. Now, with a sweep within reach in their opening-round series, the message inside the locker room remains unchanged—stay present, stay disciplined, and keep earning everything.

For Ajay Mitchell, that mindset was established long before the postseason even began. The Thunder’s approach to the season was not built on defending what they had already accomplished, but on becoming something better. From training camp through the final stretch of the regular season, improvement—not validation—was the priority.

“I think we were really focused on our team from the beginning of this season,” Mitchell shared during a global media availability. “Just trying to become better with every single game, every single rep. Every player from top to bottom was focused on that. I think it helped us get into the playoffs ready… and I think we’re a better team than we were last year.”

That internal growth has shown up in Oklahoma City’s cohesion. The Thunder are not simply relying on continuity; they have evolved it. Players have expanded their roles, sharpened their strengths, and embraced the responsibility that comes with being the team everyone is chasing. In a league where parity continues to rise, Mitchell understands that standing still is not an option.

“The NBA is a very, very good league,” he said. “It’s hard to go back-to-back. Every team gets better. So the trick is, no matter if you win or not, you’ve got to keep working. You can’t be left behind. You’ve got to focus on what’s happening now.”

That focus extends beyond the court and into the culture Oklahoma City has built. One of the defining traits of this Thunder group is its sense of connection—a locker room dynamic that has made integrating new pieces seamless. Mitchell pointed to that environment when discussing how quickly players are able to settle in, referencing how newcomers are immediately embraced.

“I think it’s very special, the team we have,” he said. “Even for me, when I first got here, I felt like I was part of the family right away… we’re very close. It’s like a family.”

That balance of togetherness and accountability has been critical in handling the pressures that come with being champions. Every opponent brings a heightened level of intensity, every game carries added weight, and every mistake is magnified. For Isaiah Hartenstein, the key has been stripping all of that down to something much simpler.

“I think throughout the whole season, you’ve always had a target on your back,” Hartenstein said. “We just do a great job of approaching it the same way. We don’t look too far forward, we don’t look too much into the media… we just focus on ourselves and go game by game.”

It is a philosophy that has defined Oklahoma City’s rise and now shapes its title defense. Rather than getting caught up in the narrative of repeating, the Thunder have leaned into routine, preparation, and consistency. The result is a team that plays with confidence—but not complacency.

“We have a lot of confidence in ourselves,” Hartenstein added, “but we also know we have to earn it. You can’t skip steps at all.”

That understanding comes from experience. Last season’s championship run provided a blueprint, but not a guarantee. Each postseason brings a different set of challenges, different matchups, and different moments that test a team’s resolve. The Thunder are aware of that reality, which is why their focus has remained narrow, even as the bigger picture comes into view.

“Every playoff is different,” Hartenstein said. “You go through different adversities, different challenges… we just have a deep team that’s ready to sacrifice whatever the team needs to win.”

That depth—and willingness to sacrifice—has been evident throughout this series, where Oklahoma City has steadily imposed its identity on both ends of the floor. Now, as they stand one win away from advancing in dominant fashion, the temptation to look ahead naturally grows. But inside the Thunder locker room, that temptation is being resisted.

“We really want to focus on whoever we play next,” Hartenstein said. “If you look too far ahead, that’s when teams don’t approach it the right way.”

It is a simple message, but one that carries weight, especially for a team trying to accomplish something as difficult as repeating in today’s NBA. The Thunder are not chasing history with bold declarations or external noise. Instead, they are doing it the same way they built themselves into champions—quietly, deliberately, and one game at a time.
