Blazers’ rebuild gain clarity behind Avdija and rising core to earn playoff spot

For the Portland Trail Blazers, this current phase they are on has never been about rushing the process. It has been about recalibrating, understanding where they stand, and building something sustainable upon entering a new era. The wins have not always been consistent, and the growing pains have been evident, but beneath the surface, something more important has been taking shape.

Portland is starting to find its identity, and it has been rewarded with a playoff berth after succeeding in the play-in tournament.

This season has not been defined by star power or immediate contention. Instead, it has been about growth, structure, and the early signs of a team learning how to play together. There is a different energy to this group now, one that reflects a team slowly gaining confidence in its direction as they head to the postseason.

At the center of that shift is Deni Avdija, who has stepped into a role similar to what a franchise cornerstone represents as the Blazers went on the season without team icon Damian Lillard. His impact goes beyond numbers, and it is reflected in the way he influences the game on both ends, setting the tone by aggressively attacking the rim and continuing to expand his offensive versatility.

Avdija has embraced the responsibility. He has become one of Portland’s most reliable offensive options, using his size, instincts, and activity to disrupt opposing offenses. At the same time, his offensive game has taken meaningful steps forward. His decision-making has improved, his shot selection is more refined, and his ability to create for others has added another layer to his value. Most importantly, his slashing game has elevated his overall play, earning him an all-star selection this year and likely the Most Improved Player award and an All-NBA selection.

He represents the kind of player the Trail Blazers want to build around. Versatile, competitive, and committed to doing the smaller things that lead to winning.

Alongside him is the steady presence of Jrue Holiday, whose veteran leadership has provided much-needed stability. Holiday’s role extends beyond his on-court production. He organizes the offense, sets defensive standards, and brings a level of professionalism that young teams often need but rarely have.

His presence allows Portland’s younger players to develop without being overwhelmed. It gives them structure, accountability, and an example of what winning habits look like on a nightly basis.

That balance between youth and experience has started to define this roster.

The Trail Blazers are leaning heavily into their young core, and the returns have been encouraging. Development has not been linear, but there are clear signs that several players are beginning to establish themselves as key pieces moving forward. Younger players like Toumani Camara, Shaedon Sharpe, Donovan Clingan, and Scoot Henderson have all taken the leap and provided meaningful contributions throughout the season.

Each game has become part of a larger evaluation on who fits long term. Who complements Avdija. Who can be relied on in meaningful moments. These are the questions shaping Portland’s present, and slowly, answers are beginning to emerge.

What stands out most is the collective growth. The offense is becoming more organized, with better spacing and improved ball movement. Defensively, the effort has been more consistent, with players showing a greater understanding of positioning and rotations. It is not perfect, but it is progress that can be built upon.

That progress is what makes this moment significant.

For a team in Portland’s position, the challenge is not just acquiring talent. It is identifying the right path forward once that talent begins to show potential. The Trail Blazers are approaching that point where decisions will carry more weight.

There are multiple directions they could take.

They could remain patient, continuing to invest in the development of their young players and allowing the group to grow organically. This path requires time, but it also offers the opportunity to build a cohesive unit that understands how to win together.

Another option is to accelerate the timeline. With Avdija emerging and Holiday providing a stabilizing presence, Portland could explore moves that bring in additional high-level talent. A significant trade could shift expectations quickly, but it would also require careful consideration to avoid disrupting the chemistry that is beginning to form.

Then there is the middle approach. Incremental improvement through smart roster decisions. Targeting players who complement the existing core, drafting with intention, and adding pieces in free agency that address specific needs. This path allows the Trail Blazers to remain flexible while continuing to build toward long-term success.

What matters now is they would most certainly use this playoff experience to build for the future, and it remains to be seen how they would approach this unique situation given to them.

For much of the past few seasons, the direction felt uncertain. Now, there is a clearer sense of purpose. The team is not just collecting young players. It is starting to shape an identity around them. And they will be using this newfound identity to fight in the playoffs.

That identity is still evolving, but the early indicators are promising. Defense is becoming a priority. Ball movement is improving. Roles are becoming more defined. Most importantly, the players are beginning to trust the system and each other.

There is also a growing belief that this group can take a meaningful step forward sooner rather than later. While expectations may still be tempered externally, internally, the signs of progress are difficult to ignore.

The Trail Blazers are building with intention. Avdija’s emergence has given them a focal point. Holiday’s leadership has given them structure. The development of their young players has given them hope.

Now, it becomes about alignment.

The front office, coaching staff, and players must continue to move in the same direction. The decisions made from this point forward will determine whether Portland can translate potential into sustained success following this year’s playoff run.

There will be challenges ahead, and there will be setbacks. That is part of the process for any young team trying to find its place in the league.

However, for the first time in a while, there is a sense that the Trail Blazers are on the right track. They are starting to understand who they are. And once that identity is fully formed, the next step will not just be about competing. It will be about how far this new era in Portland can go.
