The Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award is presented each season to a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, including ethical behavior, fair play and integrity. &nbsp;The award is named for the late Kim Perrot, who helped guide the Houston Comets to their first two WNBA championships before passing away in August 1999 after a seven-month battle with cancer.
Fowles, who earns the honor in the final season of her illustrious 15-year WNBA career, received 36 votes from a national panel of 56 sportswriters and broadcasters. Seattle Storm guard Brian January, also in her last season in the WNBA, finished second with eight votes. Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell and Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike, a three-time recipient of the award, each received three votes. Rounding out the voting were Washington Mystics forward Alysha Clark and Phoenix Mercury guard Shey Peddy, each of whom received two votes, and Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray and Las Vegas Aces forward A&rsquo;ja Wilson with one vote each.
An iconic WNBA figure, Fowles concludes her career as the WNBA&rsquo;s all-time regular-season leader in total rebounds (4,006) and field goal percentage (.599). A two-time WNBA Champion, four-time Kia WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, seven-time All-WNBA selection, seven-time WNBA All-Star, and four-time Olympic gold medalist, she also was named to The W25 in 2021 when the league honored its top 25 WNBA players of all time during the league&rsquo;s 25th season.
Admired not just for her on-court accomplishments and leadership, Fowles also has made her mark in the communities in which she has lived as a student, mentor, founder, and spokesperson who inspires young women and men, and consistently gives back. Fowles founded the Sylvia Fowles Family Fund in 2010 to help children in need in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Chicago and Miami and is a spokesperson for the Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), an endeavor close to her heart as she has two nephews afflicted by epilepsy.

Sky’s James Wade named 2022 WNBA Basketball Executive of the Year

NEW YORK &ndash; The WNBA finished the 2022 regular season delivering its most-watched regular season in 14 years. Viewership across its national television partners &ndash; ABC, CBS, ESPN, and ESPN2 &ndash; was up 16 percent over the 2021 season. The league also set new marks for engagements across social media, digital and merchandise, as well as experienced subscription growth for WNBA League Pass.
Highlights from the season include:
ON THE COURT
The WNBA players and teams continued to perform at the highest level of the game:
&bull; Four players logged seven triple-doubles in the regular season. In the league&rsquo;s previous 25 seasons, a total of just nine regular-season triple-doubles had been recorded with no more than one in a given season.
&bull; Teams averaged more made three-point field goals (7.7) than in any prior season propelling teams to average 82.3 points per game, the third-highest figure in league history.
&bull; The 2022 No. 1 overall pick Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream became the first rookie to win a Conference Player of the Week honor since Tamika Catchings in 2002.
&bull; Minnesota Lynx&rsquo;s Sylvia Fowles, in the final game of her illustrious career, became the first player in league history to log 4,000 career rebounds and Seattle Storm&rsquo;s Sue Bird scored her 1,000th 3-point field goal, joining Diana Taurasi as the only players to reach that plateau in WNBA history.
&bull; New York Liberty&rsquo;s Sabrina Ionescu became the first WNBA player to eclipse 500 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists in a single season.
VIEWERSHIP
&bull; Combined viewership for the WNBA across ESPN Networks (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2) and the CBS Television Network was up 16 percent over the 2021 regular season, averaging 379,000 viewers, making it the most-viewed season for the league&rsquo;s television partners in 14 years.
&bull; AT&amp;T WNBA 2022 All-Star Game became the most viewed All-Star Game in 6 years, averaging 734,000 viewers, up 53 percent over last year&rsquo;s event.
&bull; WNBA Draft 2022 presented by State Farm&reg; averaged 403,000 viewers on ESPN, up 20 percent over last year, making it the most watched WNBA Draft since 2004.
SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT
&bull; Across all @WNBA social media handles, the league set records for engagement with 186 million video views (+36% vs 2021).
WEB TRAFFIC
&bull; Traffic to WNBA.com nearly doubled from last year for unique visitors (5.4 million, up 99%), total visits (9.2 million, up 79%), and page views (23.8 million, up 83%).
WNBA LEAGUE PASS
&bull; The league&rsquo;s out-of-market live game package experienced a 10 percent growth in subscribers this season.
WNBA COMMISSIONER&rsquo;S CUP PRESENTED BY COINBASE
&bull; The second annual WNBA Commissioner&rsquo;s Cup presented by Coinbase was held as the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Chicago Sky, 93-83. The in-season competition saw players competing for a prize pool of half-a-million dollars. In addition to the total prize pool, Coinbase provided an additional cryptocurrency bonus of $120,000 for players in the Championship Game. During the competition, $165,000 was awarded to civic engagement charitable organizations identified by the league&rsquo;s 12 teams.
SUE BIRD
&bull; As a tribute to 13-time WNBA All-Star Sue Bird during her last season, Seattle Storm games account for six of the highest attended games this year. Two of these were the first and last home regular season games that the four-time WNBA champion played in with over 18 thousand fans in attendance at Bird&rsquo;s last regular season home game on August 7.
MERCHANDISE
&bull; AT&amp;T WNBA All-Star 2022 set an all-time record for merchandise sold at a WNBA All-Star event, with a 50 percent increase over the next-best selling All-Star (Minneapolis 2018).
The league headed into the 26th season by announcing its $75 million capital raise to fuel investment in the long-term transformation of the league. It then followed up the news by announcing prior to the start of the season that U.S. Bank would become the newest member of the WNBA Changemakers, the league&rsquo;s collective of purpose-driven companies that harness their power to elevate women in sports and support the league&rsquo;s mission around advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. U.S. Bank joined the league&rsquo;s growing lineup of WNBA Changemakers, which include AT&amp;T, Deloitte, Nike, and Google.
The WNBA capped off the season by announcing that WNBA League Pass, the league&rsquo;s out-of-market regular season live game package that also features highlights and off-the-court content from the 2022 season as well as every archived game since the 2015 season, would now be available through Roku.

Viewership across its national television partners – ABC, CBS, ESPN, and ESPN2 – was up 16% over the 2021 season.

WNBA delivers most-watched regular season in 14 years, shatters records

JOHANNESBURG AND LONDON &ndash; The 2022-23 NBA regular season features 45 games that will air in primetime in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as part of &ldquo;NBA Saturdays and NBA Sundays presented by NBA 2K23,&rdquo; marking the 10th consecutive regular season that the league has scheduled weekend games that air in primetime in EMEA.

MEXICO CITY &ndash; The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Zignia today announced that the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and the three-time NBA champion Miami Heat will play a regular-season game at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City on Saturday, Dec. 17, marking the first NBA Mexico City Game since 2019 and the league&rsquo;s 31st game in Mexico overall, more than any country outside the U.S. and Canada. The NBA and Zignia will continue to collaborate on future NBA initiatives in Mexico over the next several years.
Tickets for The NBA Mexico City Game 2022 will go on sale at a later date. &nbsp;Beginning today and through Saturday, Sept. 3, fans interested in attending the game can register their interest in tickets and receive access to an exclusive ticket pre-sale by visiting www.nbaenmexico.com.
The Spurs are led by five-time NBA champion head coach Gregg Popovich, who during the 2021-22 season became the winningest coach in NBA history, and currently feature 2020 Olympic gold medalist Keldon Johnson, 2022 No. 9 overall pick Jeremy Sochan, and 2021 No. 12 overall pick Joshua Primo. &nbsp;The Heat are coached by Erik Spoelstra, who has led the franchise to two NBA championships, and currently feature six-time NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler, 2020 NBA All-Star and three-time All-Defensive Second Team member Bam Adebayo, and 2021-22 Kia Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro.
The NBA Mexico City Game 2022 will air live in Mexico on ESPN, TUDN and NBA League Pass, the league&rsquo;s premium live game subscription service. &nbsp;The game will reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories around the world on television, digital media and social media. &nbsp;Leading up to the game, the league and its partners will also conduct interactive fan events and NBA Cares community outreach initiatives. &nbsp;The game and surrounding events will be supported by a roster of marketing and merchandising partners, including AT&amp;T, Gatorade, Hennessy, Nike, SAP and Tissot, with additional partners to be announced in the coming months.
The Spurs made their debut in Mexico in October 1994 with two preseason games at the Palacio de los Deportes. &nbsp;Overall, the Spurs have played six games in Mexico, most recently a 121-119 overtime win against the Phoenix Suns as part of The NBA Mexico City Games 2019. &nbsp;The matchup will mark the Heat&rsquo;s second game in Mexico, after defeating the Brooklyn Nets 101-89 as part of The NBA Mexico City Games 2017.
The NBA Mexico City Game 2022 will also mark the 30th anniversary of the league&rsquo;s first game in the country, which featured the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks playing a preseason game at Mexico&rsquo;s Palacio de los Deportes in October 1992. &nbsp;Overall, 22 NBA teams have played preseason and regular-season games in Mexico.

This year&rsquo;s class includes nine honorees from the North American and Women&rsquo;s committees: two-time NBA All-Star and four-time NBA champion Manu Ginobili, five-time NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway, two-time NCAA National Coach of the Year Bob Huggins, the NBA&rsquo;s sixth-winningest coach of all-time George Karl and longtime NBA referee Hugh Evans. Basketball Hall of Fame reveals 2022 Enshrinement Ceremony presenters

CAIRO, EGYPT &ndash; The NBA, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Egyptian Basketball Federation today announced that the 2022 Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa camp will be held Sunday, Aug. 28 &ndash; Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Hassan Mostafa Indoor Sports Complex in Cairo, Egypt. &nbsp;The 18th BWB Africa camp will mark the first time the NBA and FIBA&rsquo;s global basketball development and community outreach program will be held in Egypt and the first time on the continent since 2019 in Senegal.
BWB Africa 2022 will bring together more than 60 of the top male and female players ages 18 and under from across Africa to learn directly from current and former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players, legends and coaches and compete alongside the best young players on the continent. &nbsp;The campers and coaches will also take part in life skills, leadership development and community service programming.
&ldquo;Basketball Without Borders is our flagship elite development camp in Africa, and we are delighted that the event is resuming on the continent for the first time in three years,&rdquo; said NBA Africa CEO Victor Williams. &nbsp;&ldquo;Since its launch in 2003, BWB Africa has provided a platform for top young players from Africa to develop and showcase their skills while continuing to grow the continent&rsquo;s basketball ecosystem. &nbsp;We look forward to once again working with FIBA on this signature program and are excited to collaborate with the Egyptian Basketball Federation to bring this special event to Egypt for the first time.&rdquo;

A record 41 former BWB campers were among the record 121 international players on opening-night rosters for the 2021-22 NBA season, including 2019 NBA champion Pascal Siakam (Toronto Raptors; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2012) and five-time NBA All-Star Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2011). &nbsp;The 2022 NBA Draft saw two former BWB Africa campers drafted into the NBA: Christian Koloko (No. 33 overall by the Raptors; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2017) and Khalifa Diop (No. 39 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers; Senegal; BWB Africa 2018). &nbsp;In total, 12 former BWB Africa campers have been drafted into the NBA since 2003.
The NBA and FIBA have hosted 65 BWB camps in 30 countries since the program&rsquo;s launch in 2001. &nbsp;BWB has reached more than 3,800 participants from 133 countries and territories, with 105 former campers drafted into the NBA and WNBA or signed as free agents.
BWB Africa 2022 will be supported by Nike, which will outfit participants with Nike apparel and footwear, and Gatorade, which will keep players and coaches hydrated throughout the camp.

Tom Izzo agrees to five-year rollover contract with Michigan State

NEW YORK &ndash; The National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced today that they will honor the life and legacy of 11-time NBA champion and civil rights pioneer Bill Russell by permanently retiring his uniform number, 6, throughout the league. &nbsp;The iconic Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer will be the first player to have his number retired across the NBA.
&ldquo;Bill Russell&rsquo;s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honored in a unique and historic way,&rdquo; said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. &nbsp;&ldquo;Permanently retiring his No. 6 across every NBA team ensures that Bill&rsquo;s transcendent career will always be recognized.&rdquo;
&ldquo;This is a momentous honor reserved for one of the greatest champions to ever play the game,&rdquo; said NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio. &nbsp;&ldquo;Bill&rsquo;s actions on and off the court throughout the course of his life helped to shape generations of players for the better and for that, we are forever grateful. &nbsp;We are proud to continue the celebration of his life and legacy alongside the league.&rdquo;
In addition to retiring Russell&rsquo;s number, the NBA will pay tribute to the Boston Celtics&rsquo; legend throughout the 2022-23 season. &nbsp;All NBA players will wear a commemorative patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys, and every NBA court will display a clover-shaped logo with the No. 6 on the sideline near the scorer&rsquo;s table. &nbsp;The Celtics, for whom Russell played his entire career and coached, will have a separate and unique recognition for him on their uniforms, to be announced soon.
Russell&rsquo;s jersey number, which he wore for his entire 13-season career from 1956-69, will not be issued again by any NBA team to any player. &nbsp;Players who currently wear No. 6 will be grandfathered.
Regarded as the ultimate winner and model teammate, Russell transformed the game with his dominant defense and graceful athleticism at the center position. &nbsp;He won a record 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons, which followed back-to-back national championships at the University of San Francisco (1955 and 1956) and a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic Men&rsquo;s Basketball Team (1956). &nbsp;Russell, who led Boston to eight consecutive NBA championships from 1959-66, was so synonymous with success that the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award was named for him in 2009.
His myriad accomplishments included five NBA Most Valuable Player awards, 12 NBA All-Star selections and 11 All-NBA Team honors. &nbsp;Russell was named to all four NBA anniversary teams (25th, 35th, 50th and 75th) and inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975. &nbsp;A four-time NBA rebounding champion, he ranks second in league history in total rebounds (21,620) and rebounds per game (22.5) in the regular season. &nbsp;The Celtics retired his No. 6 jersey in 1972.
Russell&rsquo;s impact on the NBA extended far beyond his playing achievements. &nbsp;In 1966, he was hired by the Celtics as the first Black head coach in the history of the NBA and major U.S. professional sports. &nbsp;As a player-head coach, he guided Boston to back-to-back NBA championships in 1968 and 1969.
During and after his extraordinary basketball career, Russell passionately advocated for the values of equality, respect and inclusion. &nbsp;He marched for civil rights with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and was steadfast in his belief that all people should be treated with dignity. &nbsp;Russell was awarded the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation&rsquo;s highest civilian honor, for his athletic feats and lifelong commitment to social justice.
