WNBA: Brittney Griner Joins Atlanta Dream After 11 Seasons with Phoenix Mercury

In a significant move within the WNBA, 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner has signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Dream, departing the Phoenix Mercury after an 11-season tenure. The agreement was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and Alexa Philippou.

Griner, 34, has been a dominant force in the league since being selected as the first overall pick by the Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft. Throughout her career, she has averaged 17.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. Her accolades include two Defensive Player of the Year awards and a pivotal role in leading Phoenix to the 2014 WNBA championship.

The Atlanta Dream, under the leadership of head coach Karl Smesko and general manager Dan Padover, have been actively restructuring their roster. The acquisition of Griner aims to fill the void left by the departures of key players Cheyenne Parker-Tyus and Tina Charles. Griner is expected to form a formidable trio alongside Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, positioning the Dream as strong contenders for the upcoming 2025 season.

This move marks one of the most notable free agency decisions in WNBA history, as Griner transitions from her long-standing association with the Mercury to a new chapter with the Dream.
