After months of speculation, the Golden State Warriors have finally traded Jonathan Kuminga, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Warriors will be sending the young forward to the Atlanta Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis along with guard Buddy Hield.

ANALYSIS: The move comes after a prolonged period of speculation around Kuminga’s future in Golden State. The 23-year-old – the No. 7 overall pick in 2021 – had been in and out of the rotation this season and requested a trade once eligible, seeking a fresh start and a bigger role elsewhere. 

Golden State also made a secondary move, dealing backup center Trayce Jackson-Davis to the Toronto Raptors for a 2026 second-round draft pick shortly after Porzingis’ acquisition, bolstering its future assets. 

The trade officially closes the book on what had been one of the NBA’s longest-running roster uncertainty storylines – Kuminga’s mixed tenure with the Warriors, which included flashes of potential but persistent questions about fit and consistency. The move gives Kuminga a new opportunity to develop with the Hawks, while the Warriors pivot toward a veteran-led roster for a late-season push. 

Atlanta acquired two players with upside: Kuminga, a former lottery pick with athletic tools and scoring potential, and Hield, a proven perimeter threat as part of its own roster reshaping after moving star Trae Young earlier in the deadline cycle. 

Kristaps Porzingis, a 7′1″ stretch big, brings floor spacing, rim protection and elite shooting ability when healthy, though his availability has been limited by injuries and illness this season. The Warriors are banking on Porzingis returning to form and providing a much-needed interior presence next to Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. 

Porzingis gives Golden State a new look up front with the potential to stretch defenses and offer more size, addressing a long-standing need in their rotation. The pick acquired in the Jackson-Davis deal also enhances future flexibility. 

The Warriors’ acquisition of Porzingis marks a new chapter while bringing closure to the Kuminga saga that had loomed over Golden State for months. As the trade deadline dust settles, both franchises have made substantive moves aimed at reshaping their trajectories in the Western Conference.
