LeBron James reflects on Lakers’ future first round exit: "I don’t know yet"

Following the Los Angeles Lakers' elimination from the 2025 NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron James expressed uncertainty about his basketball future. When asked if he plans to return for a 23rd NBA season, the 40-year-old replied, "I don't know the answer to that yet," indicating he will evaluate his options during the offseason with his family and support system.

Despite the team's early playoff exit, James delivered a strong performance throughout the season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists over 70 games.

James, who just completed his 22nd NBA season, holds a $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season. Despite the Lakers' disappointing playoff performance, team officials anticipate his return for a 23rd season, which would set a new NBA record for longevity.

The underlying factor here is that the elder James wants to play with his other son, Bryce James, who is draft-eligible in 2026. And that’s something to also be monitored. Lakers anticipate his return, especially considering his desire to continue playing alongside his elder son, Bronny, who completed his rookie season with the team.

While James has not made a definitive decision about his future, his recent comments suggest a period of contemplation ahead. As the offseason progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see what path the NBA's all-time leading scorer chooses next.

James' decision will significantly impact the Lakers' offseason strategy, as they aim to build a championship-contending roster around him. With the June 29 deadline to exercise his player option approaching, the basketball world awaits his choice.
