In a surprising move, the New York Knicks have dismissed head coach Tom Thibodeau, just days after the team's first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years.

Despite leading the Knicks to a 51-31 regular-season record and a deep playoff run that lasted through the Eastern Conference Finals, the organization has decided to seek new leadership in pursuit of its first NBA championship since 1973.

During his five-season tenure, Thibodeau compiled a 226-174 record and was named NBA Coach of the Year in the 2020-21 season. Under his guidance, the Knicks returned to playoff contention, making four postseason appearances and achieving consecutive 50-win seasons for the first time since the 1990s.

The decision to part ways with Thibodeau has elicited mixed reactions. Knicks President Leon Rose emphasized the organization's commitment to winning a championship, stating that a change in leadership was necessary to achieve that goal.  However, players like Josh Hart and fans, including actor Ben Stiller, expressed gratitude for Thibodeau's contributions and were surprised by the timing of the move.

As the Knicks begin their search for a new head coach, names like Mike Malone and Mike Budenholzer have emerged as potential candidates. The organization aims to build upon the foundation laid during Thibodeau's tenure and take the next step toward championship contention.
