Evan Mobley earns 2024-2025 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award

Cleveland Cavaliers forward-center Evan Mobley has been awarded the 2024–25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. At just 23 years old, Mobley becomes the youngest recipient of the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy since Dwight Howard in 2008 and the first player in Cavaliers history to receive this accolade.

Mobley's defensive prowess was instrumental in propelling the Cavaliers to a 64–18 record, securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference. He averaged a career-high 1.59 blocks per game, ranking sixth in the league, and contributed 9.3 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game.

The award's voting process was notably competitive, with Mobley receiving 35 first-place votes and appearing on 85% of ballots, amassing a total of 285 points. He edged out Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels, who led the league in steals, and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, a former Defensive Player of the Year.

Beyond the recognition, Mobley's achievement has financial implications. Winning the Defensive Player of the Year award triggers a contract escalator, increasing his salary from $38.7 million to $46.4 million for the next season and adding approximately $45 million over the duration of his contract, which extends through 2030. This adjustment elevates the Cavaliers' payroll to $219 million for the 2025–26 season, surpassing the league's second apron.

Mobley's recognition underscores his evolution into a cornerstone of the Cavaliers' defense and a rising star in the NBA.
