Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels has been honored with the 2024-25 NBA Most Improved Player award, a testament to his remarkable development and defensive prowess throughout the season.
In his third NBA season – and first with the Hawks after an offseason trade from the New Orleans Pelicans – the 22-year-old Australian showcased significant growth. Daniels averaged career highs of 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and an NBA-leading 3.0 steals per game over 76 starts. His 3.0 steals per game marked the highest average in over three decades, earning him the nickname "The Great Barrier Thief" from teammates.
Daniels' impact extended beyond traditional statistics. He led the league in total steals and deflections, recording 229 steals – the most since Allen Iverson in 2003 – and setting a new single-season record with 325 deflections. His defensive tenacity was further recognized as he finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting and was named Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month twice during the season.
Offensively, Daniels made significant strides, increasing his scoring average by 8.3 points per game compared to the previous season. He became just the fifth player in NBA history to average at least 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a single season.
Daniels' exceptional season solidifies his status as a cornerstone for the Hawks' future, exemplifying the profound impact of dedication and hard work on both ends of the court.
