Diana Taurasi announces retirement after illustrious 20-year career

WNBA legend Diana Taurasi has officially announced her retirement from professional basketball.

Taurasi is widely regarded as one of the greatest women's basketball players of all time, if not the greatest. At 42, Taurasi concluded a remarkable 20-season tenure with the Phoenix Mercury, during which she became the WNBA's all-time leading scorer and a six-time Olympic gold medalist.

Her decision to retire was shared in an exclusive interview with Time Magazine, where she expressed feeling mentally and physically fulfilled, stating, "I just didn't have it in me anymore."

Throughout her career, Taurasi amassed an impressive array of accolades, including three WNBA championships, three NCAA titles with the University of Connecticut, and six EuroLeague titles. She was drafted first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2004 and played her entire career with the franchise, leading them to multiple championships and earning two Finals MVP awards. Her scoring record stands at 10,646 career points, nearly 3,000 more than the next-highest scorer, Tina Charles.

Taurasi's impact on the game extends beyond her statistical achievements. Known for her competitive spirit and leadership, she has been a pivotal figure in elevating women's basketball's profile globally. Tributes have poured in from across the basketball community, with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praising her as one of the sport's greatest competitors. As the league looks to the future, Taurasi's legacy will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of athletes.
