Two weeks after winning the women&rsquo;s NCAA national title, Paige Bueckers has taken her act to the WNBA.
The Dallas Wings picked the historic UConn guard to be their 1st overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft Monday night at The Shed in New York City.
Bueckers, who led the Huskies to their 12th national title, becomes the sixth player from the school to get drafted no.1 overall. She joins Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, and Breanna Stewart in the exclusive list.
Now, Bueckers will be teaming up with WNBA All-Star Arike Ogunbowale to form a dynamic backcourt for the Dallas Wings as they try to rebuild and get back to championship contention as soon as possible.
The draft also highlighted the league's growing international presence, with French center Dominique Malonga selected second by the Seattle Storm and Lithuanian guard Justė Jocytė picked fifth by the expansion team Golden State Valkyries.​
USC star Kiki Iriafen and Notre Dame mainstay Sonia Citron rounded up the top 5 picks of the first round after they were selected by the Washington Mystics.

After five previous tries, the New York Liberty have finally climbed the mountaintop of the WNBA.
New York outlasted the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 Sunday night at the Barclays Center to claim the 2024 WNBA championship &ndash; the first in franchise history.&nbsp;
The Liberty have made WNBA Finals appearances in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, and most recently a season ago in 2023, but they have come up short each time around.
This was 28 years in the making as one of the WNBA&rsquo;s original franchises since its inception, finally winning a league title.
Minnesota struck first early in the 1st quarter, building a 10-point lead after the Liberty&rsquo;s cold shooting in the quarter. New York tried to make a run in the second quarter but was still down by 7 at the half.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair in the second half from there as both teams showed their grit and determination to win it all. The series was one of the best in WNBA Finals history with two overtime games over the 5 games played, and Game 5 was one of them.
Minnesota had a chance to win the game in regulation but Kayla McBride missed her game-winning three-point attempt at the buzzer with the score tied at 60.
New York capitalized on Minnesota&rsquo;s turnovers and their bench scoring in overtime to come away with the victory.
Sabrina Ionescu, who was the hero in Game 3 after that heart-stopping game winning three, struggled mightily from the field in the game with only 5 points on a brutal 1-19 shooting. Ionescu tried to affect the game in other ways though with 7 rebounds and 8 assists, making crucial passes and hustle plays in the 4th quarter and overtime.
To pick up her slack, Breanna Stewart had 13 points and 15 rebounds while rookie Leonie Fiebich had 13 including hitting a crucial three in OT.&nbsp;
Jonquel Jones was named Finals MVP for her incredible series and her 17 points (led the team) and 6 rebounds proved to be essential for the Liberty.
New York would not have won the game if it weren&rsquo;t for the efforts of Nyara Sabally, who scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Sabally was not playing that many minutes in the series but when her number was called in this game she delivered, providing energy off the bench and toughness on defense.
Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride led Minnesota&rsquo;s losing effort with 22 and 21 points respectively but it was not enough for Minnesota to break the tie for most championships in WNBA history.

CHAMPS AT LAST: Liberty outlast Lynx to win 2024 WNBA Finals

The Minnesota Lynx survived yet again another tough challenge from the New York Liberty and won, 80-77, in Game 4 of the 2024 WNBA Finals to force a winner-take-all Game 5.&nbsp;
With their season on the line, all Minnesota starters scored in double digits in a complete team effort. Kayla McBride led all scorers with 19 points, Courtney Williams had 15, while Bridget Carleton and Alanna Smith both had 12 markers. Defensive Player of the Year Napheesa Collier once again played all 40 minutes available and finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.&nbsp;
Carleton made the biggest play of the game by hitting two free throws with two seconds left and the Lynx forced the stop on the next possession against another potential game-winning three point attempt by Sabrina Ionescu at the buzzer. Ionescu broke the hearts of Minnesota fans in Game 3 after she hit a tough side-stepping three from 30 ft to steal the game on the road.&nbsp;
The Lynx won the game by forcing Liberty superstars Breanna Stewart and Ionescu to tough shooting nights. Stewart only had 11 points on 5-20 shooting after a 30-10 game in Game 3 while Ionescu was 5-16 from the floor, scoring only 10 points.&nbsp;
The two teams will meet again for the final time on Sunday night in New York to claim the 2024 title.
Minnesota will have a chance to be the winningest franchise in WNBA history by winning their 5th title to break their tie with the Houston Comets and the Seattle Storm. The Lynx reached the Finals for the first time since 2017, when they won the last of four championships in seven years.&nbsp;
New York, on the other hand, is looking for their first-ever WNBA title after having lost five times in previous seasons. This is their second straight Finals appearance after having lost to the Las Vegas Aces last year in 4 games.

Napheesa Collier played the best game of her playoff career as she and the Minnesota Lynx closed out the Phoenix Mercury in Game 2, 101-88, Wednesday night in the 2024 WNBA Playoffs.&nbsp;
Collier had 42 big points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, shooting 70 percent from the field in a historic performance. After scoring 38 in Game 1, Collier made 80 points in a two-stretch &ndash; the most in WNBA history. She also tied the most-playoff points ever, a record she shares with Breanna Stewart.
Collier had ample support from the rest of her team as four other players &ndash; the starters &ndash; scored in double digits for the Lynx as they advanced to the WNBA semifinals.
Phoenix&rsquo;s loss was a heartbreaker for the team, but most especially for Diana Taurasi, who&rsquo;s nearing the end of an illustrious career. After compiling through a resume worthy of GOAT status, Taurasi declined to answer when asked postgame if the league had seen the last of her. She netted 10 points for the Mercury while center Brittney Griner led the way for the Mercury with 24 points.
Facing the Lynx are the Connecticut Sun, who will be making their sixth straight semis trip after outclassing the Indiana Fever and super rookie Caitlin Clark.&nbsp;
The Sun won in Game 2, 87-81, courtesy of another big game from their star Alyssa Thomas. After playing all 40 minutes, Thomas poured in 19 points, 13 assists, and 5 rebounds to carry her team to the victory. Thomas also got a lot of help from across the board, including Marina Mabrey&rsquo;s 17 markers and DeWanna Bonner&rsquo;s 15 points.
Despite the loss, super rookie Caitlin Clark showed out for the Fever with 25 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds, as she became the first rookie in WNBA history to post 25+ PTS, 5+ REB, and 5+ AST, per ESPN. Clark has been phenomenal this season and with the way she is playing, Indiana is going to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Super rookie Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever got a rude welcome in her first-ever playoff game.
After a historic rookie season, Clark came into Sunday excited for her first taste of high-stakes basketball. However, Alyssa Thomas and the Connecticut Sun came ready to play.
The third-seeded Sun blew out the sixth-seeded Fever, 93-69, to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series. Thomas had a triple-double for Connecticut, dropping 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists while veteran DeWanna Bonner scored 22 points while playing outstanding defense on the aforementioned Clark.
Clark struggled from the field, going only 4-17 including 2-13 from three as she saw the entire Connecticut defense turned on against her. Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 while Aliyah Boston added 17 but it was not enough as the Fever got blown out by 24 points.
In the other games of the day, the New York Liberty began their quest for a back-to-back Finals appearance with a comfortable 83-69 win over the Atlanta Dream. Leonie Fiebich led all scorers with 21 points while former WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart added 20.
The defending champions Las Vegas Aces started their title defense after winning wire-to-wire against the Seattle Storm, 78-67. Recently crowned unanimous WNBA MVP A&rsquo;Ja Wilson had 21 points in the win.
Finally, MVP runner-up Napheesa Collier starred for the Minnesota Lynx in their Game 1 win over the Phoenix Mercury. Collier had the best game of the day with 38 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists as they won by seven, 102-95.

There are not many rookies in WNBA history that can say that they had a better rookie season than what Caitlin Clark had this season. Perhaps Clark&rsquo;s is the best rookie season of all time. That is a subject definitely up for discussion, but it cannot be understated how much impact the no.1 overall pick has created for the Indiana Fever with record breaking performances night in and night out.&nbsp;
Among Clark&rsquo;s numerous broken records in just her rookie year: Rookie assists per game; Rookie 3PT FG made; Rookie total points; Rookie triple-doubles; Rookie guard double-double streak; Rookie points/assists double-double; Rookie All-Star game assists; and Rookie total rebounds.&nbsp;
Not only that, Clark also broke not just rookie records, but several WNBA records even as a rookie. These are: 1st player in WNBA history to be named Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month in the same month; 1st player in WNBA history with 20+ points, 15+ assists and 5+ rebounds in a game; Fastest WNBA player to reach 100 three-pointers (in 34 games); and the fastest player to reach 350 points and 150 assists to start a WNBA season (regardless of years in the league).
The 6-foot-0 guard set the most assists in a game in WNBA history with 19, and the single-season assist record of 337 total assists.
Clark averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds in 40 games started for Indiana, who has punched a ticket to the playoffs after a resurgence of play following the Olympic break. The Fever finished the season with a .500 record at 20-20 and qualified to the playoffs as the 6th overall seed.
As a result of all her efforts and accolades, Clark was named unanimous Rookie of the Year, All-WNBA First Team, All-Rookie Team, and finished 4th in MVP voting behind just eventual winner A&rsquo;Ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart. This kind of success is kind of unprecedented for a rookie and there could not have been a better player than Clark to do this, after also a historic college career.
Now, the Indiana Fever will start their best-of-three playoff series against the Connecticut Sun, and Clark will be at centerstage for perhaps the most important basketball to be played in her young career.&nbsp;
Clark and the Fever will be up against fellow All-WNBAer Alyssa Thomas and the 3rd-seeded Sun, who has been a team to be reckoned with this season following a very impressive and consistent year &ndash; even slotting ahead of the defending champions Las Vegas Aces.
After all, this season will be remembered as how Caitlin Clark lit up the WNBA in a manner never to be seen again.

Clark, this year&rsquo;s top overall pick, stuffed the stat sheet yet again as she poured in a career-high 31 points on 8-14 FG, 5-9 3PT, 12 assists, and 4 rebounds. This is Clark&rsquo;s 5th game this year with 20+ points and 10+ assists, which would be the most of such games in a single season in WNBA history. Clark also passed Ticha Penicheiro for the most 10+ assist games by a Rookie in WNBA history. But more importantly, the win pulled the Fever to a .500 record at 16-16 and currently the 6th seed in the tight race to the playoffs.

Indiana Fever&rsquo;s Clark, the no.1 overall selection in this year&rsquo;s draft, lit up Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury in their first game back in the WNBA. Clark had 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 11 assists in the win over Taurasi and Team USA teammates Brittney Griner and Kahleah Copper. Clark showed poise and renewed confidence as the Olympic break seemed to calm the super rookie&rsquo;s game down. Clark started her WNBA career on a whirlwind, going from the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament to being drafted in the league in three weeks, then starting the entire month with just over a month.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The transition seemed to have affected Clark&rsquo;s game to start, however she has gotten her groove. Clark followed up that performance against Phoenix with 23 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks and made history in the process by breaking the WNBA record for most assists in a season by a rookie. Clark is now also the franchise record holder for most 3-pointers made by a rookie, a testament to the rookie&rsquo;s incredible season as a pro. Clark is starting to get into her groove now as she gets more and more comfortable in the league and that is bad news for the rest of the WNBA teams.
Angel Reese, Chicago Sky&rsquo;s no.7 pick, has continued her double-double rampage throughout the league. Since coming back from the Olympic break, Reese has delivered three straight double-doubles, putting up 11 and 15 against the Phoenix Mercury; 14 and 11 against the Los Angeles Sparks; and an almost 20-20 game vs the Mercury again with 19 points and 20 rebounds. Reese&rsquo;s relentless pursuit of the boards put her in special company in the league, making history in her own right by being the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 20 double-doubles in a single season. Reese&rsquo;s latest triple-double also marked a league-leading mark &ndash; an impressive one being a rookie in a league with premier players in A&rsquo;Ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.&nbsp;
For Wilson and Stewart, Team USA&rsquo;s runaway best players in their 8th straight run to Olympic gold, they will now be back to their respective teams in the WNBA to lead another championship run. Wilson&rsquo;s Las Vegas Aces and Stewart&rsquo;s New York Liberty met in the 2023 WNBA Finals with Wilson and Las Vegas eventually coming out on top. Stewart had 18 points and 7 boards in the win, but she had a lot of help from her Liberty teammates with Sabrina Ionescu leading the way with 23 points.
Despite the Aces&rsquo; rocky season than expected coming off a WNBA championship, Wilson continues to dominate the league by further establishing her status as the best player in women&rsquo;s basketball. She recently had a staggering 34 points, 13 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 blocks on 12-20 FG and 10-11 FT to lead the Aces to another win and bring their record to 17-9, good for 4th overall in the league.

The Americans dominated from start to finish by playing their signature game: defense. A&rsquo;Ja Wilson had 4 blocks of her own and she added 10 points for the Americans, as they once again displayed a masterclass on defense.&nbsp;
Breanna Stewart led Team USA Women&rsquo;s in scoring this time around, having 16 points with 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Guards Jackie Young and Kahleah Copper added 14 and 11 points respectively for Team USA in the 21-point victory.
Team USA moves to one win away from sweeping yet another Olympics and win a historic 8th straight gold medal. It won&rsquo;t come easy, however, with hosts France in their way. France beat Euro champion Belgium behind their crowd in Paris and they will be what remains to be the last roadblock for Team USA to achieve their goal.&nbsp;
Team USA&rsquo;s Women&rsquo;s date with France in the gold medal game also means both countries will have their men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s teams in the Olympic final. Team USA Men&rsquo;s and France will also battle in the Men&rsquo;s tournament for gold.&nbsp;

The Americans played well with no complacency at all despite already clinching their quarterfinal berth against a dangerous German team that beat Belgium in pool play. Team USA leaned on their talent and length on defense that made the Germans work on the offensive side of the floor.&nbsp;
That is now Team USA Women&rsquo;s 58th straight win in the Olympics as they secure the no.1 overall seed coming in the knockout rounds. Only 3 more wins and they complete yet another gold medal run and extend their dynasty to 8 straight Olympics.
A&rsquo;Ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart dominated once again for the Americans with 14 and 23 points respectively, but it was Jackie Young who starred in this game with 19 points built on 4 three-pointers.&nbsp;

The USA Women&rsquo;s National Basketball Team wasted no time in establishing its dominance in the competition after blowing out Japan, 102-76, at the Pierre de Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France for the Paris Olympics.
Gunning for their 8th straight gold medal, Team USA made quick work of Japan whom they faced in the last Olympics gold medal match in Tokyo 2020. Five players scored in double figures for the Americans, led by A&rsquo;Ja Wilson&rsquo;s 24 points and Breanna Stewart&rsquo;s 22 points.
Wilson added 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks while Stewart had 8 assists, 3 assists, and 3 blocks of her own as Team USA ran away with the victory. Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu and Brittney Griner each added 11 points, while Chelsea Gray led Team USA with 13 assists, for a whopping 35 total assists for the team.
Next up for Team USA is a battle between Belgium as they figure to be in the &lsquo;Group of Death&rsquo; in this year&rsquo;s version of the Games.

The USA Men&rsquo;s National Basketball Team has completed the USA Basketball Showcase in London, UK on a high note as it prepares to battle the best of the best in the world at the Paris Olympics.
Team USA narrowly beat South Sudan 101-100 after the South Sudanese caught fire from beyond the arc led by Marial Shayok&rsquo;s 6 threes. Team USA then escaped Germany with the German side playing like the collective team that they are, being the world champions just over a year ago in the FIBA World Cup 2023.
Both results had similar themes revolving around them after 39-year-old LeBron James put on his cape to play hero for the United States, bringing Team USA home for both victories. James provided clutch baskets in the game vs South Sudan, scoring on a go-ahead layup that put the USA up for good. James then scored 11 points in the 4th quarter to close a pesky German team that was coming from all angles led by FIBA World Cup MVP Dennis Schroder.
Team USA&rsquo;s Women&rsquo;s Basketball Team also scored a win against the Germans in their own exhibition game and they were led by WNBA MVP candidates A&rsquo;Ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.&nbsp;
Both the Men&rsquo;s and Women&rsquo;s Basketball teams will now head on to France for the start of their respective campaigns in their pursuit of gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

On Friday night in Cleveland, Caitlin Clark and Iowa defeated Paige Bueckers 71-69 to advance to the national title game against undefeated South Carolina &ndash; but not without some late-game drama.
With Iowa just leading by one 70-69 with 9 seconds left, UConn had possession for the final shot in the game. Out of the timeout, the Huskies tried to run a split action for Bueckers with Aaliyah Edwards screening and Nika Muhl passing the ball. As the screen was set with Bueckers veering back towards Muhl to receive the pass and get ready to shoot, Hawkeyes guard Gabbie Marshall fought over the screen by Edwards which ended up with the play getting called for an offensive foul for setting an illegal screen with just around 3 seconds left in the game.

SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt and ESPN Women&rsquo;s Basketball analyst Andraya Carter didn&rsquo;t agree with the call either.
&ldquo;I hated the call. You&rsquo;ve got to give Gabbie Marshall credit for trying to fight over the screen. That&rsquo;s what drew the refs&rsquo; attention in,&rdquo; Carter said on SportsCenter after the game. &ldquo;But to me, now that final play it&rsquo;s not about Iowa&rsquo;s defense. It&rsquo;s about the call the referee made. There was a slight lean, maybe Aaliyah Edwards&rsquo; elbow was slightly out. But to be honest the calls were even for both sides. There were missed calls for Iowa. There were missed contacts for UConn. To make that call at the very end of the game &ndash; to me, it took away the opportunity for players to make plays. &hellip; To be honest, that call sucked.&rdquo;

&ldquo;Oh my god,&rdquo; expressed a visibly disappointed Taurasi. &ldquo;Wow, what an unfortunate time to call an offensive foul. Just know how to ruin the game &ndash; oh my god that&rsquo;s terrible. It didn&rsquo;t even get her open &ndash; that&rsquo;s a tough play. We always talk about letting the players decide the game, especially in a benign call like that. It&rsquo;s just tough to end the game like that.&rdquo;
Legendary coach Geno Auriemma could not hide his disappointment as well in the post-game conference, saying UConn maybe should just get better at not setting illegal screens. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s probably an illegal screen call you could make on every single possession, and I just know there were three or four called on us &ndash; and I don&rsquo;t think any were called on them.&rdquo;
Clark and Final Four hero Hannah Stuelke &ndash; who played perhaps the best game of her life by scoring 23 points &ndash; thought their teammate Marshall did a good job of fighting over the screen, praising how she has been one of the nation&rsquo;s best defenders.
&ldquo;Gabbie is great in those situations. She always comes up with big plays, a block, or whatever,&rdquo; Stuelke said. &ldquo;You always see it time and time again, [Marshall] does not get enough credit for what she does,&rdquo; Clark added. &ldquo;She guards one of the best players in the country and it challenges her quite a bit. Paige had a great game but I thought Gabbie just played great defense on her. Even when Paige made some tough baskets, Gabbie just responded and kept going up there and guarded her.&rdquo;
Despite the tough loss, Bueckers took the high road and remained a positive attitude after what transpired late in the game.
"Players play and players decide the game. Everybody can make a big deal out of one single play but one single play doesn&rsquo;t win or lose a basketball game," Bueckers admitted. "... You can look at one play and say oh that killed us or that hurt us. We should have done a better job, I should have done a better job making sure didn&rsquo;t leave the game up to that."
