Denver has thrown multiple defenders at him, forcing tough midrange shots and limiting his trips to the free-throw line. For OKC to thrive, SGA must assert himself early and often, controlling the tempo and creating high-quality looks for both himself and his teammates.
This is the kind of moment where MVPs rise above the game plan. Whether it's hunting mismatches, collapsing the defense to kick out to shooters, or making timely defensive plays, SGA has the tools to take over. In Game 2, his 33-point performance was a reminder of what he&rsquo;s capable of when he&rsquo;s in attack mode and dictating the pace. In Game 4, Jokic finished with 22 points on just 9-of-22 shooting&mdash;a rare inefficient night for the two-time MVP. For the Nuggets to win on the road, Jokic must return to the ultra-efficient playmaker and scorer who lifts everyone around him.
One adjustment could be to get Jokic more touches at the elbow and the top of the key, where he can orchestrate Denver&rsquo;s offense without dealing with immediate post pressure. From those areas, he can see the floor better and exploit mismatches or cutters. Additionally, running more two-man actions with Jamal Murray or Aaron Gordon could help relieve pressure and force OKC to defend multiple threats simultaneously.

The Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets played two games in the Middle East for the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024 and here are some key observations from both teams after their first two preseason games.
Celtics vs Nuggets: Battle of the Champs
In a matchup between the past two NBA champions, the Celtics (2024 winners) prevailed twice over the Nuggets (2023 winners). The first one was a thriller, 107-103, while the second one was a blowout, 130-104.
Despite it still being the preseason, the Celtics showed their ability to win in both kinds of games, whether it was close or blowout. They proved their caliber against a fellow NBA champion that was hypothetically a matchup to watch out for, especially with the two teams being from different conferences.
The Celtics are really, really good &ndash; they did not miss a beat&nbsp;
The Celtics are back and are looking more dangerous than ever &ndash; at least from what they&rsquo;ve shown in these two games. They are really, really good and they mean business this year. This seems impossible after coming off a championship, but the Celtics appear to be hungrier for a chip than they&rsquo;ve ever been and they&rsquo;re looking to prove everyone wrong after a somewhat question-mark season last year, with all the injuries their opponents have endured. The Celtics ought to prove that the championship win was not a fluke, and this starts in the preseason by showing their usual dominant selves.&nbsp;
No championship hangover for these Celtics
The Celtics mean business, and when I say business, that&rsquo;s Jaylen Brown gesturing a too-small sign on Jamal Murray after scoring a tough bucket inside over him.
Jaylen Brown is back better than ever, and after that intense underwater basketball workouts and at just 28 years old, the Finals MVP is firmly in his prime and should play his best basketball ahead of him.
Jayson Tatum comes in with an edge after the Olympics run where he did not play twice, and gunning for the Finals MVP he did not win.
Jrue Holiday and Derrick White are Boston&rsquo;s ever-reliable do-it-all guys and they&rsquo;re gonna do everything that&rsquo;s asked of them.
The whole Boston core, with big men Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis, along with crucial bench pieces Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser, just appear to be ready for this title defense.
Mazzulla ball is in full effect &ndash; even if it&rsquo;s just the preseason
The Celtics under Joe Mazzulla make it to a point to shoot as many open threes as they could, and in Game 1 vs the Nuggets, they shot a whopping 61 attempts, making 20 of them; and in Game 2, shot 47 attempts with 18 makes &ndash; a respectable 38 percent clip.
This style of play has brought them a championship and should be rightfully used as such until teams find a way to counter Boston&rsquo;s offense. This is the kind of game that Mazzulla wants to play for the Celtics and they have the roster and the men to do it &ndash; a loaded roster of shooters and floor spacers.
The Celtics still have room for improvement &ndash; and that&rsquo;s scary
&ldquo;Defensively, just got to be a little more tighter on that end,&rdquo; Derrick White said post-game. &ldquo;With some of our communication and the things that we&rsquo;re doing, and I think that comes with time. Offensively, just continue to make the right read and make the right play.&rdquo;
This should be bad news for the rest of the NBA as the defending champions themselves feel they still have something to fix and improve as the season goes on &ndash; a never-ending learning and lessons that can only be taught through game experiences.
Nikola Jokic is still really good
This should be another MVP type of season is on the horizon for the 3-time MVP as he has shown no signs of slowing down and is getting even better and smarter with each game that he plays.
In two games vs Boston, the Joker averaged over 20 points and 8 rebounds in just a little over 18 minutes of playing time. The Celtics haven&rsquo;t found a solution against Jokic inside and that resonates with the entire NBA as well.&nbsp;
Jokic&rsquo;s MVP campaign this season could come from him having to carry this roster more with some key departures from the team. He will have more responsibility on the offensive end and Jokic should just be dominant and assert himself to lead Denver to the upper echelon of the West.&nbsp;
Life after Bruce Brown and KCP for Denver
The Nuggets have now lost two key figures in their championship run in back-to-back offseasons, and if this is any indication, the past champs that lost their key role players struggled in the seasons to come. Brown and KCP&rsquo;s skillset should be replaceable but their chemistry with the team especially with MVP Jokic has been vital and Denver could take a step back on that end without those two.
Following their departures, the Nuggets have yet to replace them and will rely on young Christian Braun to replicate their success, or from a veteran like Vlatko Cancar who just recently returned from injury.
Denver&rsquo;s bench is suspect
Denver has no one off the bench who is legitimately an offensive threat or someone who can create his shot, so Michael Malone should probably stagger Jokic and Murray&rsquo;s minutes more, and lean on Michael Porter Jr for more offensive creation. This was exposed against the Celtics as the Nuggets struggled to have some offensive flow within their second units. Westbrook looked to be the answer for that problem but with his age he could not be tasked alone anymore to carry the offensive load for the bench.
Unless Denver makes a big FA signing or a splash before the trade deadline, expect their bench to struggle at times and they could be relying on their starters more often than not to supply all the scoring.
Westbrook&rsquo;s role
Newcomer Russell Westbrook has looked good at times for Denver in these two games. He was pushing the pace, driving and drawing the defense, and kicking it out to shooters which was a good sign for Denver as he figured out to be their backup point guard behind Jamal Murray, or even play alongside him at times to slot Murray at the 2. Westbrook at this point of his career does not need to do much on the offensive end, especially with an all-timer like Jokic in his prime. He could just provide energy off the bench for quality minutes and should be a big piece in Denver&rsquo;s rotation.
Jamal Murray&rsquo;s health
Perhaps the biggest factor out of them all, Jamal Murray&rsquo;s health is the biggest concern for Denver and should be their main priority heading into the season. Murray did not look right in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Canada&rsquo;s Olympic run, and he was not able to find his groove yet in two games vs Boston.
With teams scheming against Jokic every single night, Murray has to come in and set the tone for the Nuggets as their primary secondary option and draw the defense away from the MVP.

In this article, we take a closer look at the biggest question facing each Western Conference team heading into the playoffs, from injuries and roster changes to key matchups and strategic decisions.
<h3>Oklahoma City Thunder - How far can their youth and inexperience take them in the playoffs?</h3>
The Thunder got away through the regular season with historic from MVP frontrunner Shai Gilgeous Alexander, an impressive rookie season by Chet Holmgren, a star sophomore leap by Jalen Williams, and a coaching masterclass in a genius coach Mark Daigneault.
However, the playoffs as we know it is a different beast &ndash; will Mark Daigneault be able to sustain the good coaching he has done with his team throughout this regular season?
How much of this youth and inexperience be a factor for them to advance deeper in the playoffs; will they be able to use it to their advantage? Or will it be a hindrance against other experienced teams when they face each other in these tight situations? Most of the time, these situations require patience and discipline &ndash; teams with playoff experience have shown over time and have done it time and time again on their way to a deep playoff run.
<h3>Denver Nuggets - Can they go back to back?</h3>
There&rsquo;s really no other question for a team like the Nuggets at the peak of their powers: Can they win back-to-back titles? There has not been a back-to-back champion in the NBA for the past 5 years, with the last one coming in 2017 and 2018 when the Warriors won it all.
Like Boston, it is a title or bust status with Denver as of now. They have been fairly healthy throughout the regular season, have a mostly intact roster that won it all last year, and have the best player in the world in Nikola Jokic in his absolute prime. Denver this year has again all the necessary pieces to win &ndash; the right amount of shooters, defensive guys, scoring in the paint &ndash; which are all the makings of a championship team.
A couple of questionable factors though would be how much of an impact the loss of Bruce Brown would have in these playoffs. Brown was arguably the 5th, or 4th best player in their championship run last year &ndash; maybe even the 3rd in some games. He was essential on offense and defense, guarding the opponent&rsquo;s best perimeter threats while providing off-ball scoring and cuts that fit perfectly with Jokic.
Second, they&rsquo;ll be facing championship-caliber teams with hunger and drive to defeat them, and all have been competitive with the Nuggets this season. The Lakers, although the Nuggets swept them last year in the Western Conference Finals, still have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and they won&rsquo;t take that lightly &ndash; likely coming back with a vengeance.
The Suns have won the season series with the Nuggets 2-1 and they pose a threat to the Nuggets with their formula of having three elite shotmakers that can explode anytime &ndash; which the Nuggets may not cover all at the same time.&nbsp; The Wolves, who perhaps have the best lineup suited to defeat them, are lurking in the same bracket waiting to pounce on them at sight.&nbsp;
These are all challenges a defending champion must go through to achieve a rare feat because the playoffs are supposed to be hard.
<h3>Minnesota Timberwolves -&nbsp; Will they finally break through after years of heartbreak?</h3>
This has already been a win of a season for the Timberwolves, achieving their second most wins in franchise history (56) since 2004 when they won 58 wins and reached the conference finals.
However, this has not stopped them from wanting more, and the wolfpack is not satisfied nor contented with just this achievement &ndash; they want more.
Minnesota wanting to go win that first playoff series like a hungry pack of wolves has been evident since trading for 3-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. Although they fell short last season due to untimely injuries to key players, the Wolves ran it back and have proven their little experiment with two bigs in star Karl Anthony Towns and Gobert would work.&nbsp;
Led by their resurgent young superstar Anthony Edwards equipped with the best defense in the league, Minnesota certainly hopes this team would be the one &ndash; the one to end the longest playoff series win droughts in the league for quite some time now.
<h3>Los Angeles Clippers - Will they be able to meet the expectations this time around?</h3>
The Clippers trading for James Harden signaled one thing for the franchise: They are going all in with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and surrounding them with all the help they can get. They are far from a perfect team, but the Clippers want to have the best possible results this season before transferring to their new arena next year.
The Clippers have only appeared in the conference finals once in the Leonard-George era after being plagued by several injuries during their different playoff runs. Due to that, people haven&rsquo;t been able to see what the team is capable of when their two stars are fully healthy in a playoff run.
However, this year might just be their year. Their core of Harden, George, and Leonard have been mostly healthy all season long. The front office has also surrounded them with complementary pieces to help them win. LA now has usable bigs in Zubac, Plumlee, and Theis; they have Terrance Mann as their designated stopper; Norman Powell being the sixth man off the bench microwave scorer; a 3-and-D wing in Amir Coffe; and Russell Westbrook as the spark plug that gives them the boost and the energy off the bench.
After being just the &lsquo;second team in LA&rsquo; and &lsquo;that other team in LA&rsquo; for years, the Clippers aim to prove the doubters wrong and change the perception that surrounds the team as they pivot into a new era of Clippers basketball.&nbsp;
<h3>Dallas Mavericks - Will Luka finally fulfill the promise he has been showing so far in his career?</h3>
Throughout his young NBA career, Luka Doncic has had one of the best starts since LeBron James statistically. He has been in constant range of breaking or matching LeBron&rsquo;s records in points scored, triple-doubles, assists, and rebounds. However, this has not always translated into wins with Doncic just appearing in just one conference finals in the first six years of his career. But that might change this season.&nbsp;&nbsp;
This year, the Mavericks have put up arguably the best roster on paper that Luka has had in his career &ndash; arguably even better than the 2022 team that made the conference finals.
Alongside Doncic&rsquo;s MVP act is a true partner in crime in Kyrie Irving; shot-blocking and rim-rolling vertical threats in Daniel Gafford and Lively; rugged forwards that can shoot in PJ Washington, Dante Exum, Josh Green, and Derrick Jones; a microwave off-the-bench scorer in Tim Hardaway Jr; and veteran bigs that have been in Dallas for quite some time now and you can count on in always with Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell.
Can Luka finally overcome the Clippers? This season was one for the books with an MVP caliber and worthy year by averaging close to 34 points a game with 9 rebounds and 9 assists per game. Doncic has taken his game to another level in the regular season &ndash; this time, can he take his playoff game to another level as well?
All great young players have to go through someone as the stepping stone to reach newer heights &ndash; and Luka has lost to this Kawhi Leonard and Paul George-led Clippers team twice already in his career in the playoffs.
LeBron had to go through the Celtics, Jordan had to go through the Pistons. Could it be Luka&rsquo;s turn to get through this Clippers team that has tormented him for two playoff series?
<h3>Phoenix Suns - Will this new formula take them over the top?</h3>
The Suns have experienced substantial playoff success over the past three years by having a Finals appearance and reaching the conference semifinals twice. However, those groups fell short, with the feeling of something lacking or something missing that could take them over the top.
So lo and behold, Phoenix scrapped it and took a different approach this season &ndash; ditching the point guard spot and getting a rugged and physical big that could set screens and not demand the ball much on offense.
In its place came through as the Suns traded for Bradley Beal &ndash; going with a new formula by having three shot creators and shotmakers on the floor at the same time &ndash; pairing him with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. They also traded away former no.1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton for Jusuf Nurkic, a wide-bodied center whose job is to set screens, rebound, and get their three creators open in the lane or for jump shots.
They added an elite shooter in Grayson Allen to space the floor alongside those three, or sometimes Royce O&rsquo;Neale comes in for more defense against the opposing perimeter threats.
The Suns&rsquo; new approach and formula to the game make it incredibly hard to defend because you have to have three elite defenders to contain those three shot-creators, who can explode and get buckets at any point in the game. Although their defense is still suspect at times, the main point of this lineup is not to outscore &ndash; but to out-create teams and have a variety of options to dissect and defeat defenses.
If this new strategy works and could take the Suns to the promised land in these playoffs remains to be seen.
<h3>Los Angeles Lakers - Will they have enough this time around?</h3>
Despite a strong run to the Western Conference Finals as a 7th seed, the Lakers fell short last year vs the Nuggets after being swept 4-0. Throughout the season, the Nuggets&rsquo; dominance of the purple and gold continued, and now they have lost eight straight games against this Denver team.&nbsp;
However, there is optimism that the Lakers will turn it around and have a different result vs the Nuggets. Superstar LeBron James, even at 39 years old, looks to prove that he still has something left in the tank. Although they got outplayed and outcoached last in that series by the Nuggets, James can make those adjustments being the cerebral and high IQ player that he is.
James is perhaps one of the best if not the best tactically sound players of all time, so it would make sense &ndash; if they were to defeat Denver, he needs to be able to outsmart Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets this time around. Superstar tandem Anthony Davis will also be vital to the series having to defend the &lsquo;Joker&rsquo; and producing buckets himself.
The Lakers will also feature some new bench pieces this year that could be difference makers in the series Taurean Prince, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Gabe Vincent, all of whom could defend and hit those spot-up threes if needed.
Then there&rsquo;s a hungry D&rsquo;Angelo Russell who had a bad series vs Denver last year raring to bounce back along with an always-solid Austin Reaves to be the stabilizer.
<h3>Pelicans - How will they fare without Zion Williamson?</h3>
The New Orleans Pelicans start and end with their young star Zion Williamson. After going out with what is to be believed a left hamstring strain, everything now hinges on his health.&nbsp;
The Pelicans obviously need him no matter what and whether or not he&rsquo;s healthy for their first-round series vs the Thunder will likely be the answer if they win it or not.
We&rsquo;ve seen what Williamson is capable of doing, scoring 40 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in his first taste of postseason action in their play-in game vs the Lakers. The burly forward bullied the Lakers&rsquo; defense and he showed his once generational type of body and scoring prowess come together after finally being healthy for a full season in his five years in the NBA.
New Orleans has fallen short a lot of times in the playoffs, either failing to make it or to win a series, and it is clear that Zion is the difference that separates them from winning or losing a playoff series.

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone said it was around December when he thought this could be a championship-caliber team.
Jamal Murray was a believer even sooner. Like in 2019.

After watching the Nuggets steamroll the Suns in Game 6 to clinch the Western Conference semifinals, it&rsquo;s hard to argue with him.
Nikola Jokic scored 32 points and finished with a triple-double, Murray added 26 and the Nuggets are off to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2020&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-playoffs-2023-suns-nuggets-acbe7347fec1903efa1d9cf99a8227d0">after beating the Phoenix Suns 125-100 in Game 6 to clinch the series</a>. Denver has never made the NBA Finals.
The top-seeded Nuggets will play the winner of the Lakers-Warriors series. The Lakers have a 3-2 lead.
No matter who advances in the other series, the Nuggets will likely get less press than their opponent. The Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Warriors have Steph Curry.
&ldquo;You can sit there and fight it and complain, or you can embrace who we are and what we have,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d rather not waste time with all the pundits who count us out or don&rsquo;t give us the respect that we deserve as a team.&rdquo;
Malone said the Nuggets&rsquo; critics have one valid argument.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s one thing we haven&rsquo;t done,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;Until we win a championship, people are going to keep saying (negative things) about us. So that&rsquo;s what drives us, winning a championship. Getting to the Western Conference finals doesn&rsquo;t do it. Getting to the Finals doesn&rsquo;t do it.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s winning a championship.&rdquo;
The Nuggets &mdash; led by the Jokic-Murray combo &mdash; look as thought they have the chops to pull it off.
Jokic has already had four triple-doubles this postseason in 11 games, contributing 32 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Game 6. Murray is back to playing at an elite level following his ACL injury. The team also has excellent role players in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Aaron Gordon and Michael Porter Jr.
That depth was something the Suns simply couldn&rsquo;t match, particularly after Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton went down with injuries.
The Nuggets took full advantage.
&ldquo;When you play against a team with their backs against the wall, facing elimination, you just can&rsquo;t show up and think you can just arrive for this game,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;We did not want to be counter punchers. We wanted to go out and strike first.&rdquo;
Now the Nuggets have a few days to enjoy some well-earned rest while the Lakers and Warriors conclude their series.
Denver is four wins away from playing in the first NBA Finals in franchise history. The last time the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals, they lost to the Lakers in 2020 in the Florida bubble.
But the Jokic-Murray combo keeps getting better and they&rsquo;re looking for a different outcome this time around.
&ldquo;The last five years, we&rsquo;ve improved every year,&rdquo; Jokic said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re making something new. It&rsquo;s just amazing to be a part of this journey around these games. I think we can do something nice.&rdquo;

PHILADELPHIA (AP) &mdash; James Harden&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/76ers-celtics-nba-playoffs-0f96443546f1fdbeae8aeaa4ce146c76">showed in Game 1</a>&nbsp;he could still be as great once as he ever was in his prime. The Beard just overall these days isn&rsquo;t as great as he once was in his halcyon days with Houston.
Harden&rsquo;s occasional big postseason games for the 76ers &mdash; like the 45 points he dropped against Boston in a Game 1 win &mdash; now come with immediate fallout.
Like&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/76ers-celtics-nba-playoffs-2023-2b0c931791b7d48b403ead0c9c7e1813">Game 2</a>, when Harden shot 2 of 14 in a loss.
Or&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/celtics-76ers-embiid-mvp-tatum-brown-e5b065453c1bd57287e6655e0ffa351f">Game 3</a>, when Harden had 3-for-14 shooting for 16 points in, yes, another loss.
For those keeping score at home, Harden&rsquo;s 5-for-28 shooting the last two games is the worst for him over any two-game span in his career &mdash; that includes regular season or playoffs &mdash; in which he&rsquo;s attempted at least 20 shots.
Yikes.
It&rsquo;s no wonder the Celtics hold a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals ahead of Sunday&rsquo;s Game 4 in Philadelphia. It&rsquo;s also no wonder why the whispers have grown louder that Harden wants to finish his career with the Rockets. Lose Game 4, and it could be the last one in Philly for Harden &mdash; and with more games like the last two, would the Sixers really be that crushed to see him go?
Harden brushed off concerns about his play, especially his odd Game 3 tendency of passing on open looks.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m pretty good on basketball instincts,&rdquo; Harden said. &ldquo;I know when to score. I know when to pass, so I&rsquo;m pretty sure a lot of it was the right play.&rdquo;
Harden took a so-called discount (opting out of a $47.4 million deal this season to sign a more team-friendly extension) to chase a championship with reigning MVP Joel Embiid and the Sixers. The 10-time All-Star has a $35.6 million player option for the 2023-24 season and he will likely decline it and chase more riches in another market.
Maybe circumstances change if the 76ers get past Boston and make a deep run.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s up to him to figure out how to best help us,&rdquo; Embiid said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s fine. Sometimes you make them and sometimes you miss them. He made a lot of shots in Game 1. The last few games they haven&rsquo;t been going in. I have the trust in him to keep telling him to be aggressive and keep shooting.&rdquo;
But history is against Philly. Not just NBA history &mdash; teams that win Game 3 when a playoff series is tied 1-1 go on to win the series 73% of the time &mdash; but rivalry history. The Celtics eliminated the 76ers in the playoffs in 2020, 2018, 2012, 2002 and 1985. The Sixers haven&rsquo;t beat the Celtics in the playoffs since 1982 &mdash; a year before the Sixers won their last NBA championship.

Devin Booker scored 47 points, shooting 20 of 25 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, to keep the Suns alive headed into Sunday&rsquo;s Game 4 in Phoenix.
CELTICS AT 76ERS
Celtics lead 2-1. Game 4, 3:30 p.m. EDT, Sunday, ESPN
-- NEED TO KNOW: The 76ers are in trouble. Embiid is still achy, Harden is struggling and the Celtics clearly have Philly&rsquo;s number. The Celtics went 3-1 against the 76ers in the regular season and seem poised to repeat the feat in the playoffs. Not even the emotional carryover from Embiid&rsquo;s MVP ceremony helped the Sixers, as they quickly fell behind by 10 and never had the juice to fully recover.
&mdash; KEEP AN EYE ON: Jayson Tatum. He watched Embiid&rsquo;s ceremony from the locker room and said it &ldquo;kind of got me really ready to play.&rdquo; He scored a team-high 27 points after he was held to just seven points in Game 2. Tatum scored eight points only 4 minutes into Game 3. If he continues to play like he did in Game 3 &mdash; while teammate Jaylen Brown continues to harangue Harden &mdash; it could be another big day for Boston.
&mdash; INJURY WATCH: Grant Williams said he still hurt from taking an accidental boot from Embiid to the back of his head. Embiid isn&rsquo;t 100% yet as he plays through a sprained right knee.
&mdash; PRESSURE IS ON: 76ERS. The 76ers grabbed the early edge with a Game 1 win in Boston that earned them home-court advantage. They gave it right back in two straight losses where they&rsquo;ve mostly looked out of sorts against the Celtics.
NUGGETS AT SUNS
Nuggets lead 2-1. Game 4, 8 p.m. EDT, Sunday, ESPN
&mdash; NEED TO KNOW: The Suns won their first game of the series in Game 3 thanks to another huge effort from Devin Booker, who scored 47 points on 20 of 25 shooting. Kevin Durant added 39. They&rsquo;ll probably need a similar effort to win Game 4 considering 12-time All-Star point guard Chris Paul is expected to be out once again with a strained groin.
&mdash; KEEP AN EYE ON: The Jokic-Ayton matchup. Denver star Nikola Jokic had another huge game in Game 3 with 30 points, 17 assists and 17 rebounds. On the other hand, Ayton had arguably the worst game of his playoff career with just four points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes. Ayton was so ineffective that the former No. 1 overall pick was benched in favor of Jock Landale in the fourth quarter. The Suns still won but that&rsquo;s a trend that probably can&rsquo;t continue if Phoenix is going to win the series.
&mdash; INJURY WATCH: Outside of Phoenix&rsquo;s Paul, both teams are relatively healthy.
&mdash; PRESSURE IS ON: Booker. The three-time All-Star is averaging more than 36 points per game in these playoffs and its fairly clear that he has to continue his Hercules-style production if the Suns hope to advance.

LOS ANGELES (AP) &mdash; The Los Angeles Clippers have 22 games remaining to integrate their trade deadline acquisitions. They didn&rsquo;t waste any time.
Kawhi Leonard&nbsp;scored 33 points, tying his career high with seven 3-pointers, and the Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors 134-124 on Tuesday night to snap a two-game skid.
&ldquo;The Clippers just outplayed us,&rdquo; Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. &ldquo;They were great in the second half and they deserved it.&rdquo;
Norman Powell added 24 points and Paul George had 20 points and eight assists for the Clippers, who debuted newly acquired Eric Gordon, Bones Hyland and Mason Plumlee. They helped outscore the Warriors&rsquo; bench, 49-42.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s going to be different for us,&rdquo; Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. &ldquo;We got to put this together as fast as we can.&rdquo;
Gordon finished with seven points, Hyland had six and Plumlee scored eight in the teams&rsquo; last game before the All-Star break.

Jordan Poole&nbsp;led seven Warriors in double figures with 28 points. Klay Thompson had 18 points playing the second game of a back-to-back for the first time this season. Kevon Looney had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
The Warriors fell to 29-29 at the break. They hope to have Stephen Curry back not long after the season resumes, while newly acquired Gary Payton II could be out a month.
&ldquo;We have reinforcements coming and we have a lot to look forward to,&rdquo; Kerr said. &ldquo;We have lost so many games that we should have won. We know we&rsquo;re right there.&rdquo;
Gordon&rsquo;s 3-pointer extended the Clippers&rsquo; lead to 18 points early in the fourth. The Warriors cut it to 116-106 on&nbsp;Jonathan Kuminga&rsquo;s&nbsp;3-pointer. He finished with 16 points off the bench.
Leonard hit his seventh 3-pointer in the closing minutes before leaving the game with the Clippers ahead 128-114.
The teams traded leads and were tied five times early in the third. The Clippers outscored the Warriors 19-7 over the final minutes to lead 105-93 going into the fourth. Leonard and George had just two points each while their supporting cast carried them. Plumlee had six points and Hyland had two during the run in which seven different players scored.
&ldquo;With this offense, I feel like I can create in the lane and find teammates,&rdquo; Hyland said. &ldquo;I forgot Mason can push the ball, too.&rdquo;
The Warriors had four players in double figures at halftime when they led 65-61.

Draymond Green&nbsp;was critical of the Warriors&rsquo; defense, something that has concerned Kerr all season.

You just got to want to do it if you want to win and we haven&rsquo;t,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m always going to try on that side, but I can be better. I&rsquo;m not going to point the finger at anyone or point blame. If you&rsquo;re a leader at something and you&rsquo;re failing, it&rsquo;s your fault.&rdquo;

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) &mdash; D&rsquo;Angelo Russell and the new-look Lakers figured things out on the fly to take down the defending champs on their home floor.
Working to get in sync with his new teammates and eager to complement Anthony Davis and LeBron James, Russell communicated on the court all game long after rejoining his first team where he played from 2015-17. The Lakers picked Russell second overall in 2015 out of Ohio State.
He had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds in his Lakers return after being acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline, Dennis Schroder scored 26 points, and Los Angeles beat the Golden State Warriors 109-103 on Saturday night in a rivalry missing the star power of injured greats LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
&ldquo;It was a little weird but I&rsquo;m trying to normalize it,&rdquo; said Russell, who also played 33 games for the Warriors during the 2019-20 season. &ldquo;The sooner the better. I&rsquo;ve been in this situation. ... After that first stint you kind of get comfortable again. When you get traded so many times the irony comes back with all these teams and just kind of normalize it.&rdquo;
Schroder made a key layup with 1:17 to play after Donte DiVincenzo&rsquo;s 3-pointer cut the Lakers&rsquo; lead to 105-101. Davis had a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds and blocked one of his three shots on a late jumper by Klay Thompson.

A scan done on James&rsquo; troublesome left ankle and foot showed no serious issue.
Ham expects to see James back on the floor before the All-Star break. When asked whether James might need to be sidelined through the break, Ham offered, &ldquo;No, I don&rsquo;t think he&rsquo;ll allow us to do that.&rdquo;
General manager Rob Pelinka said earlier Saturday that nothing was seriously wrong for James, who topped former Lakers star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during Tuesday&rsquo;s 133-130 home loss to Oklahoma City.
The game with Golden State marked James&rsquo; seventh sidelined by soreness in the left ankle.

The Warriors hadn&rsquo;t made an announcement regarding Gary Payton II&rsquo;s physical and whether they would go through on an agreed trade with Portland to bring the defensive-minded guard back to Golden State.
&ldquo;Obviously, this whole thing has been strange. It is what it is,&rdquo; Kerr said. &ldquo;There is not a whole lot to do or say, so we are just waiting it out and seeing how it plays out.&rdquo;

Portland Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin said Friday the team was confident Gary Payton II was healthy before agreeing to trade him to Golden State in a four-team deal that could be at risk.
The Athletic reported that Payton had failed Golden State&rsquo;s physical on Friday. The Warriors can either allow the trade to go through anyway, or rescind it.
Cronin said he was aware of the report but hadn&rsquo;t been contacted by the Warriors, Hawks or Pistons, who were also in the deal.
&ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t heard from any teams about this. So for now I have to defer,&rdquo; said Cronin, who was at a news conference to speak about Portland&rsquo;s moves at the NBA trade deadline.
Payton&rsquo;s time in Portland was brief. He signed a $28 million, three-year contract last summer after playing on Golden State&rsquo;s NBA championship team. But he missed the first 35 games of the season in Portland because of a core injury that required surgery.
The Athletic reported that that Payton could be sidelined for two to three months with the injury. The report also cite unnamed sources that said he had been playing through pain in Portland.
&ldquo;He had been cleared and we were confident that he was healthy when he was playing,&rdquo; Cronin said. &ldquo;We would not have brought him back if we thought he wasn&rsquo;t healthy or if he was at risk.&rdquo;
Portland coach Chauncey Billups agreed.
&ldquo;We would never push a guy to play. Whether it&rsquo;s medical or whether a guy just doesn&rsquo;t feel like he can play that night &mdash; say he&rsquo;s got a headache or say he&rsquo;s just got a lot of stress at home, or say he has a death in the family,&rdquo; Billups said. &ldquo;I would never push somebody to play because I would always be scared of me doing that and then something actually happening.&rdquo;
As part of the trade, Golden State received unprotected 2026 and &lsquo;28 second-round draft picks from Portland while giving up Memphis&rsquo; 2026 second-round pick and its own 2028 second-round selection to the Blazers.
The Warriors sent center James Wiseman to Detroit in the four-team trade. The Pistons traded forward Saddiq Bey to the Hawks and the Blazers acquired forward Kevin Knox II from the Detroit along with three conditional second-round picks from the Hawks.
In another move before the deadline, the Blazers also dealt forward Josh Hart to the New York Knicks in exchange for forward Cam Reddish, guard Ryan Arcidiacono and a 2023 first-round pick.
Billups said Reddish would start Friday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Blazers also acquired guard Matisse Thybulle from the Philadelphia 76ers for a 2029 second round pick and sent a 2027 second-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets.

Off to one of the best starts in school history, Illinois cracked The Associated Press Top 25 women&rsquo;s basketball poll for the first time in 23 years on Monday.
The Illini (14-3) are ranked No. 24 in their first Top 25 appearance since Nov. 27, 2000. It&rsquo;s been a remarkable turnaround under first-year coach Shauna Green. The team was 7-20 last season and just 1-13 in the Big Ten. Illinois hasn&rsquo;t had a winning season since 2012-13.
&ldquo;It means a lot. I understand how far we&rsquo;ve come in a really short time,&rdquo; said Green, who came to Illinois after a successful run coaching at Dayton. &ldquo;Most of the kids weren&rsquo;t alive the last time we were ranked. I was a sophomore in college.&rdquo;
South Carolina remained the No. 1 team, garnering all 28 votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks have been No. 1 for 29 consecutive weeks. They were followed in the poll by Stanford and Ohio State, which rallied to beat Illinois on Sunday.
UConn moved up one spot to fourth. The Huskies had their game against DePaul on Sunday postponed when they had only six scholarship players available because of injuries.
LSU moved up two spots to fifth. It&rsquo;s the first time the Tigers have been that high since Dec. 14, 2009, when they were also fifth. LSU (16-0) is off to the best start in school history, besting the mark held by the 2002-03 team that won its first 15 games.
South Carolina, Ohio State and LSU are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the country. The Gamecocks and Tigers meet on Feb. 12 in South Carolina.
Indiana, Notre Dame, UCLA, Maryland and Utah rounded out the top 10. The Utes lost their first game of the season, falling at Colorado last Friday.
The Illini, who haven&rsquo;t made the NCAA Tournament since 2003, ended a 14-game losing streak last week to Northwestern. That gave Illinois 14 wins in its first 16 games, which was the best start ever for the school. Its losses have come to Indiana, Ohio State and Delaware.
&ldquo;If you would have told me in the summer we&rsquo;d be up 17 at Ohio State and have a chance to win I&rsquo;d tell you were crazy,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;Perspective changes really quickly. Villanova also re-entered the poll this week coming in at No. 25. The Wildcats had a five-week run in the poll earlier this season.

RISING BEARS
Baylor moved to 3-0 in the Big 12 after knocking off then-No. 17 Oklahoma and No. 21 Kansas last week. Caitlin Bickle was a big reason why, posting double-doubles in both games. The Bears moved up five spots to No. 18 in the poll this week.

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; It wasn't that long ago that Victor Oladipo was an All-Star guard.
On Friday night, the veteran Miami Heat guard showed he can still be that guy.
Oladipo scored a season-high 26 points off the bench, Bam Adebayo added 21 points and 11 rebounds and Miami beat the Phoenix Suns 104-96. The Heat finished 3-2 on an eight-day trip.
&ldquo;He's been getting more comfortable, more confident and getting his legs under him,&rdquo; Spolestra said about Oladipo. &ldquo;He's a big-time X-factor for us on both sides of the floor.&rdquo;
Later Spolestra added: &ldquo;We haven't forgotten who he was. We just enjoy being on this journey with him.&rdquo;
The Heat and Suns entered the game with the same record, but are heading in opposite directions. Miami has won nine of its last 13. Phoenix dropped to .500 and has lost five in a row, eight of nine and 13 of 17.
The Heat led for the majority of the game and never trailed in the second half, though it stayed fairly tight. Oladipo &mdash; who shot 7 of 10 from the field and 4 of 6 on 3-pointers &mdash; made a 3 with 1:36 left to put the Heat up 102-92.
Oladipo was a two-time All-Star with the Indiana Pacers in 2018 and 2019 before a string of serious injuries derailed his career. He has played just 74 games over the past four seasons.
&ldquo;Vic's been great every night,&rdquo; Heat guard Max Strus said. &ldquo;Not just his penetration, but his defense has been phenomenal. Providing us a spark.&rdquo;
Jimmy Butler added 20 points for the Heat, and Strus had 19. Adebayo shot 10 of 15 from the field.
&ldquo;There are some good things happening,&rdquo; Spolestra said. &ldquo;And that's with a lot of moving parts, guys in and out of the lineup. More than anything, I respect that our guys are not making excuses for the moving parts.&rdquo;
The banged-up Suns were already without several key players because of injuries, including three-time All-Star Devin Booker (groin strain), Cam Johnson (knee) and Cam Payne (foot). They got more bad news Friday when veteran point guard Chris Paul left in the second quarter with right hip soreness.
Deandre Ayton led the Suns with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Torrey Craig added 17 points.
The Heat also were missing a few pieces, including high-scoring guard Tyler Herro, who was out because of back spasms. But Oladipo's offense made up for Herro's absence and Miami's defense forced Phoenix into just 41.5% shooting from the field, including 26.1% from 3-point range.
Oladipo banked home a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter to give the Heat a 30-23 advantage. Miami kept its advantage through most of the second quarter and led 51-46 at halftime.
Oladipo had another buzzer beater at the end of the third quarter, making a driving layup to push the Heat ahead 78-73.

NEW YORK (AP) &mdash; Julius Randle had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a 102-83 win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday in New York.
&ldquo;My teammates are getting me the ball in the right spots. They&rsquo;re getting me going early,&rdquo; Randle said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just focus and effort, night in and night out.&rdquo;
Jalen Brunson, who returned after missing three games with a sore right hip, scored 24 points. Immanuel Quickley scored 15 points, Quentin Grimes had 12 and Mitchell Robinson finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks.
&ldquo;I shot 6-of-11 from the foul line. There&rsquo;s the rust," Brunson said. "I started out 0-for-3 and didn&rsquo;t finish the game the way I wanted to shooting-wise. But I was still in rhythm. I feel I can be more efficient, but I was just happy to be back out there.&rdquo;
Deandre Ayton led Phoenix with 12 points. Chris Paul had 11 and Mikal Bridges added 10.
The Suns, who lost for the sixth time in their last seven games, scored the first four points of the game. The Knicks followed with the next 14 and led the rest of the way.
New York went ahead 23-11 after the first quarter, the lowest total allowed to any opponent in any quarter by the Knicks since Feb. 1, 2020 (vs. Indiana).
Phoenix pulled to within 11, but a 21-0 Knicks run produced a game-high 32-point lead, 52-20.
The Suns ended the second quarter on an 11-2 streak and trailed 54-31. Phoenix tied for the fewest halftime points scored by a Knicks opponent since Orlando also scored 31 on April 11, 2015.
&ldquo;Defensively, we had to get back to our ways,&rdquo; Randle said. &ldquo;When we won eight in a row, the defensive end was big for us. We feel that rhythm and chemistry coming back on that end.&rdquo;
The Knicks went up 74-43 following a 10-run but had their lead cut to 79-58 after the third quarter.
&ldquo;I thought the way our guys came out, they played really hard defensively and played very unselfish offensively,&rdquo; said Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau. &ldquo;It is sometimes difficult to play with a lead like that, but I thought our guys did a good job of playing tough. They can make up ground quickly the way they shoot threes. That was a big concern.&rdquo;
The Suns, who scored a season low, only got as close as 18 points, 83-65, in the fourth quarter.
&ldquo;It is a mind-boggling thing,&rdquo; Suns coach Monty Williams said. &ldquo;The frustration comes in for us because we&rsquo;ve been a team that can overcome that when we are not shooting the ball well. Mentally and emotionally, I have to get our guys stronger. We haven&rsquo;t been able to handle those kinds of lapses this year.&rdquo;

HOME SWEET HOME?
The Knicks are the only NBA team to have a winning record so far this season but a losing record (9-10) at home. Monday&rsquo;s win snapped a three-game home losing streak.

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; Cam Johnson scored 29 points, making seven 3-pointers, and the Phoenix Suns beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.
Johnson finished 7 of 11 behind the arc and 10 for 17 overall in another strong outing for the former reserve who is now in the starting lineup.
&ldquo;I think he is getting more comfortable with the role, but defensively he was really good,&rdquo; Suns coach Monty Williams said.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Suns (6-1), who won without center Deandre Ayton, sidelined with a sprained right ankle.
Johnson helped pick up his team with Devin Booker having a tough night shooting. Booker still had 18 points but was 2 of 7 from 3-point range and 6 of 18 overall. He did have seven rebounds and five assists.
&ldquo;Offensively he was really aggressive," Williams said of Johnson. &ldquo;Everybody was telling him to shoot the ball. He is more than a shooter. He has the ability to make plays. He is a really good passer.&rdquo;
Johnson also had the responsibility of guarding Karl-Anthony Towns.
&ldquo;That is a challenge I really enjoy,&rdquo; Johnson said. &ldquo;They play a little bit different, so being able to execute what we worked on feels pretty good.&rdquo;
Minnesota got within 87-85 after Anthony Edwards hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. But the Timberwolves committed six turnovers in their next seven possessions and the Suns were never threatened after that.
&ldquo;Carelessness, bad spacing, poor execution, certainly some heightened defense by Phoenix. But we've got to be better in those moments,&rdquo; Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. &ldquo;Whatever the defense is giving us, we've got to take that.&rdquo;
Mikal Bridges had 19 points for Phoenix and Chris Paul had 15 points, 12 assists and a team-high eight rebounds for the Suns, who led by as many as 18 points.
Towns and Edwards scored 24 points apiece. Towns had 10 rebounds and seven assists, while Edwards made five 3-pointers in 10 attempts.
Naz Reid scored 13 points, making 5 of 6 shots, and fellow reserve Jaylen Nowell scored 10 for Minnesota.
Despite the absence of Ayton, the Suns held their own on the boards against the taller Timberwolves, with Minnesota outrebounding Phoenix 42-34. The Wolves entered the night third in the NBA in rebounding with 49 per game.
Rudy Gobert had nine rebounds for Minnesota and scored seven points, all from the free throw line. He took just one shot from the field in 32 minutes. Two other Wolves starters didn't contribute much &mdash; D'Angelo Russell had five points and Jaden McDaniels, limited to 17 minutes by foul trouble, scored four.
WAINRIGHT UPDATE
Suns guard Ish Wainright&rsquo;s father died Monday. Calvin Wainright, who was 68, was a longtime basketball coach and mentor in Kansas City. Ish Wainright has been out with a back injury since the beginning of the season, and away from the team in recent days.
&ldquo;They all were taken aback by it, they have supported him the way they always do,&rdquo; coach Monty Williams said of his players hearing the news.
NASH OUT
Williams said he felt bad for Suns great Steve Nash, who is no longer the coach of the Brooklyn Nets after a tumultuous tenure.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s always tough. We all kind of know how hard these jobs can be,&rdquo; Williams said. &ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t seen anybody have to deal with more than him in recent years as far as non-basketball stuff. It&rsquo;s tough to watch from afar.&rdquo;

North Carolina surprised just about everyone last year when a talented team led by first-year coach Hubert Davis parlayed a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament into a run to the national title game.
The Tar Heels won&rsquo;t be sneaking up on anyone this year.
With four starters back from the team that lost to Kansas in New Orleans, the Tar Heels are the runaway pick as the preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25 released Monday. They earned 47 of 62 first-place votes from a national media panel to easily outdistance Gonzaga, the top preseason team the past two years.
The Bulldogs received 12 first-place votes while No. 3 Houston had one and fourth-ranked Kentucky the other two.
&ldquo;As they opened up their lockers for the first practice of last year, there was a picture of the New Orleans Superdome in there. I wanted them to see where we were headed in April,&rdquo; Davis recalled last week. &ldquo;The hard work and preparation, the practice that had to be put into place to put ourselves in position to do that. t&rsquo;s the same approach this year compared to last year. The only difference this year is the outside noise.
&ldquo;Last year,&rdquo; Davis said, &ldquo;the outside noise didn&rsquo;t think we had a chance. The outside noise this year thinks we do.&rdquo;
It is the 10th time that North Carolina has been preseason No. 1, breaking a tie with Duke for the most in the history of the AP poll. But only twice during those years did the Tar Heels reach the national championship game, and only the 1981-82 team with James Worthy and Michael Jordan ultimately cut down the nets.
&ldquo;Like Coach Davis always preaches, a lot of outside noise, and we don&rsquo;t really worry about any of that,&rdquo; said Caleb Love, one of the four returning starters for North Carolina along with R.J. Davis, Leaky Black and Armando Bacot.
&ldquo;We just focus on our team,&rdquo; Love said, &ldquo;and us getting better each and every day.&rdquo;
The Bulldogs will once again lean on Drew Timme to deliver coach Mark Few his elusive national title. Houston has its highest preseason ranking since 1983, when the third of the Cougars&rsquo; Phi Slama Jama teams reached its second consecutive title game. Kentucky has its best preseason rank since 2019, when the season ended amid the pandemic.
There was a tie at No. 5 between the Jayhawks, who raised their latest national title banner inside Allen Fieldhouse earlier this month, and Big 12 rival Baylor, which raised its own championship banner the previous season.
Duke, where Jon Scheyer replaced Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, was ranked seventh and UCLA eighth. Creighton has its best preseason ranking at No. 9, followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, TCU and Auburn.
&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t pay a lot attention to it when you&rsquo;re picked ninth,&rdquo; Bluejays coach Greg McDermott said. &ldquo;You go to work every day and try to get better every day. It&rsquo;s important we approach it the same this year.&rdquo;
The No. 13 Hoosiers have their first ranking since January 2019 and highest in the preseason since 2016.
Villanova, where Kyle Neptune is taking over for Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright, is No. 16, the lowest preseason ranking for the Wildcats since 2008. They were followed by Arizona, Virginia, San Diego State and Alabama.
The final five are Oregon, Michigan, Illinois, Dayton and Texas Tech.
&ldquo;When I was in school as a player, I never bought into the rankings, what the media would say about our ball club. You still got to go out and play the game,&rdquo; Hoosiers coach Mike Woodson said. &ldquo;Hell, my senior year we were ranked No. 1 and we didn&rsquo;t get it done. So at the end of the day I guess it&rsquo;s kind of nice for our players who haven&rsquo;t experienced that. Again, you got to go out and play. I mean, you got to prove it on the basketball floor. That&rsquo;s when it counts.&rdquo;
CONFERENCE WATCH
The Big 12 and SEC lead the way with five ranked teams. The Big Ten, Pac 12 and ACC have three apiece and the Big East has two. The West Coast, Atlantic 10, Mountain West and American Athletic conferences each have one team in the poll.
OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Texas A&amp;M was the first team outside the poll, followed by UConn, which appeared on 24 of 62 ballots. Miami, Purdue and Saint Louis were also eyeing a spot in the Top 25 when the first regular-season poll is released Nov. 14.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
The season begins for most teams Nov. 7, but as usual, the first meeting of heavyweights will be the Champions Classic on Nov. 15 in Indianapolis: No. 4 Kentucky plays Michigan State, unranked in the preseason poll for the second year in a row, before No. 5 Kansas plays No. 7 Duke in the nightcap.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) &mdash; The Trail Blazers' new starting duo of Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons has been years in the making.
Even though Portland had a long-established backcourt with Lillard and CJ McCollum, behind the scenes Lillard helped guide Simons' development. That mentorship became important last year when Lillard was injured, McCollum was traded to New Orleans and Simons was thrust into a starting role.
And it's going to be key again this season, when Lillard and Simons share the court.
&ldquo;I believe in him, he believes in me. Now it&rsquo;s just time to continue to grow that. We've got to share the floor," Lillard said Monday. &ldquo;And one thing me and CJ always did was we made sure we had each other's best interests.&rdquo;
It's not just the starting backcourt that will look new this season for the Blazers. The team was busy at last year's trading deadline and again in the offseason. Among the additions are Jerami Grant and Gary Payton II, and first-round draft pick Shaedon Sharpe.
The Blazers went 27-55 last season, their worst finish since 2005-06 when they won just 21 games. Over the course of the season, the Blazers used 34 different starting lineups, winding up at 13th in the Western Conference.
Lillard, Portland's six-time All-Star, played in just 29 games, the result of a nagging abdominal injury that required surgery in January.
Simons, 23, stepped in and took advantage of the opportunity, averaging 23.4 points and 5.8 assists as a starter. He scored a career-high 43 points on Jan. 3 against Atlanta, making him the youngest Trail Blazer ever to have a 40-point game. He had 18 games with five-plus 3s.
The Blazers shut Simons down at the end of the season, and he missed the final 17 games with left knee patellar tendinopathy.
Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said the theme for this season is connection. Lillard and Simons already have it, even if they haven&rsquo;t often started together.
&ldquo;It's going to be a slight adjustment,&rdquo; Simons said of his new role. &ldquo;But I think both of us have been in constant communication about how we want to play and what we want to do, so I think it's going to be a pretty easy adjustment. Obviously most of the time last year I was the primary ball handler, I always had the ball in my hands. Now with Dame, he's the guy, so just playing off each other is going to be a little bit of an adjustment.&rdquo;
It will be an adjustment for Lillard, too, embarking on a season without McCollum.
&ldquo;It was definitely a little bit weird last season once the trade happened and him not being around,&rdquo; Lillard said. &ldquo;I was so used to him being around, his locker right across from mine, talking to him after games, at practice. I was just used to it, that was pretty much my whole career.&rdquo;
Lillard and Simons will be with the Blazers for a while. Lillard agreed to a $122 million contract extension that will keep him in Portland through the 2026-27 season.
Simons signed a four-year extension this summer worth a reported $100 million.
CALI BOUND
The Blazers were headed to Santa Barbara on Monday night for an away camp before opening the preseason in Seattle against the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 3.
Billups wants his players to get a chance to get to know one another without distractions.
&ldquo;The NBA is just so tough now to practice, and bond and connect once the season gets going,&rdquo; Billups said. &ldquo;And I've always thought that the best way to connect for a team is on the road and being away, because you've got to lean on each other.&rdquo;
WNBA. MAYBE.
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said this month that the WNBA is considering some 10 cities for expansion. The hope is to add two more teams to the league before 2025.
Portland is one of the cities hoping for a franchise &mdash; or, more specifically, a reboot. The Portland Fire played in the WNBA for three seasons from 2000-2002. The late Paul Allen, owner of the Blazers, declined to buy the Fire when the NBA sold ownership of the teams.
Dewayne Hankins, Blazers president of business operations, said the Blazers are in contact with one ownership group interested in bringing the WNBA back.
&ldquo;We're excited. Anytime people want to bring more basketball to the Rose Quarter campus, the better for us,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;So we're here standing by and supporting whatever effort that looks like, for sure.&rdquo;

As currently constructed, the Los Angeles Lakers are nowhere closer to escaping the hole they dug for themselves last offseason. While injuries played a part in their struggles, it&rsquo;s fair to say that the Russell Westbrook experiment couldn't have gone much worse. Westbrook struggled to blend off-ball alongside LeBron James, and his fit was immediately clunky.
Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has been saying all of the right things, discussing how he could get the most out of Westbrook and stressing that there's plenty of blame to go around for last year. Meanwhile, the front office continues to explore possible Westbrook trades.
According to <a href="https://theathletic.com/news/lakers-pacers-russell-westbrook-trade-dead/BmoKawpwiFm8/?source=twitterhq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Athletic&rsquo;s Bob Kravitz</a>, the Indiana Pacers recently rejected an offer from the Lakers that would have sent Myles Turner and Buddy Hield to Los Angeles in exchange for Westbrook, a 2027 first-round pick and multiple second-rounders. Indiana is reportedly ready to accept if the Lakers include their 2029 first-round selection as well. Los Angeles hasn't been willing to do so, which is why talks are currently at a standstill.
For both sides, these negotiation tactics make sense. There&rsquo;s absolutely no reason for the Pacers to help the Lakers, especially if they're only receiving one pick to take on Westbrook&rsquo;s $47.2 million salary for 2022-23. Holding out for both the 2027 and 2029 picks with little to no protections would be a fair haul for both Hield and Turner while absorbing an albatross expiring.
Los Angeles is stuck in a Westbrook bind, and it seems they have three remaining options: run it back, hold out for Kyrie Irving, or pull off this win-now deal with the Pacers. At least the Indiana deal would bring back two starters to place alongside LeBron and Anthony Davis.&nbsp;
Some might argue that the trio of James, Davis and Westbrook only played 21 games together, so we haven't seen enough to properly evaluate this group. However, it&rsquo;s fairly apparent that this core isn&rsquo;t good enough to challenge most of the Western Conference&rsquo;s elite teams. Westbrook was unable to function as a secondary option more often than not, and now he'll turn 34 years old in November. Not to mention, the West will likely be tougher than ever &mdash; with teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets finally getting healthy and several up-and-coming squads expected to take a leap forward as well.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Westbrook parted ways with his longtime agent, Thad Foucher, which set off alarm bells. Foucher had represented Westbrook throughout the entirety of his NBA career, helping him earn $291,756,333 from his NBA contracts alone. Why would they split up now? Well, Foucher didn&rsquo;t mince words in <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34250337/russell-westbrook-long-agent-thad-foucher-parting-ways-irreconcilable-differences" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a written statement</a> to ESPN&rsquo;s Adrian Wojnarowski, citing "irreconcilable differences" regarding the direction of Westbrook's career.
&ldquo;Now, with a possibility of a fourth trade in four years, the marketplace is telling the Lakers they must add additional value with Russell in any trade scenario. And even then, such a trade may require Russell to immediately move on from the new team via buyout," Foucher <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34250337/russell-westbrook-long-agent-thad-foucher-parting-ways-irreconcilable-differences" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a>. "My belief is that this type of transaction only serves to diminish Russell&rsquo;s value and his best option is to stay with the Lakers, embrace the starting role and support that Darvin Ham publicly offered.&rdquo;
Less than a week after Foucher&rsquo;s eye-opening remarks, trade winds began to pick up again around the future Hall-of-Fame point guard. There was also the Summer League awkwardness, where James and Westbrook sat on opposite sides of the arena and didn't interract with one another. Reading the tea leaves, it sure feels like Westbrook's days with the Lakers are numbered.
Based on Kravitz&rsquo;s intel from Indiana, the deal between the Lakers and Pacers would be &ldquo;done tomorrow&rdquo; if an additional pick is offered alongside Westbrook. The Brooklyn Nets don't seem to be in any rush to move Kevin Durant or Irving &mdash; with some NBA executives predicting that both players will be in Brooklyn when the 2022-23 season begins &mdash; so this Indiana trade may be the Lakers' only other option to significantly improve their title odds for next season.
As Foucher laid out, the marketplace is telling the Lakers all they need to know right now about extracting peak value in a potential Westbrook trade. It may seem like the Lakers are &ldquo;losing&rdquo; this deal based off of asset accommodation alone, but what are the alternatives? In order to move off of Westbrook's contract&nbsp;and&nbsp;bring back key contributors, the Lakers must include both first-round picks. Think of it like this: One first-rounder is to get Indiana to take on the Westbrook contract, and the other is to acquire Turner and Hield.

Honestly, based off that viewpoint, Indiana&rsquo;s angle seems more than fair. It&rsquo;s been impossible for Los Angeles to find a willing taker for Westbrook, and the Pacers are ready to take on his salary while also relinquishing two key contributors who are certainly worth a future first-round pick.&nbsp;
Acquiring Hield and Turner would be an instant game-changer for the Lakers&rsquo; postseason aspirations and a win on several levels. Hield is a talented sharpshooter who would thrive in the Lakers' system, hitting open looks in the corner or while running off perimeter actions. Thanks to the gravity provided by James and Davis, Hield would consistently feast from the perimeter. The 29-year-old would be the team's best outside shooter, and the Lakers&rsquo; roster is in dire need of perimeter weapons. Hield fills a need, and his salary would only be on their books through the 2023-24 campaign.
Turner has had trouble staying healthy, but he's been extremely productive when he's available. Turner has proven that he&rsquo;s one of the best rim protectors in basketball, averaging 2.5 blocks over the last four seasons. Paired next to Davis, who is more comfortable playing the 4, Turner&rsquo;s defense and floor-spacing acumen would provide a balanced frontcourt attack. Only 26 years old, Turner could become a long-term fixture alongside Davis in the frontcourt, as the Lakers would own his Bird rights going forward.
The Lakers&rsquo; biggest needs are three-point shooting and defensive versatility. Hield and Turner would emphatically check both boxes, and their projected rotation certainly looks more appealing.
Starters: LeBron James, Buddy Hield, Talen Horton-Tucker, Anthony Davis, Myles Turner
Bench: Kendrick Nunn, Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV, Troy Brown Jr., Juan Toscano-Anderson, Stanley Johnson, Thomas Bryant, Damian Jones
As evidence by the larger bench mob, this deal would provide Los Angeles with instant relief &mdash; consolidating a deeper rotation. Losing Westbrook is a net-positive in this situation, because Hield and Turner help address needs while allowing LeBron to run the show as pseudo-point guard.
How exactly should the Lakers and Pacers meet in the middle in these trade talks? If the Lakers are balking on including an unprotected first-round pick in 2029, would the Pacers relent on protections possibly up to top-8? Would Indiana be willing to toss in veteran playmaker TJ McConnell to push this pick into unprotected territory? Packaging McConnell with Hield and Tuner would make this three-for-one deal a nearly identical salary match.

Indiana is the rare team that would feel comfortable taking on the Westbrook contract, simply because he would never suit up for them. Armed with $31 million in cap space after their failed pursuit of Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, the Pacers can easily absorb Westbrook&rsquo;s salary. And as they tear the roster down to its foundation and rebuild around Tyrese Haliburton and No. 6 overall pick Bennedict Mathurin, Indiana is nowhere close to competing for a playoff spot. Allowing Hield and Turner the opportunity to play on a title contender also opens up more playing time for prioritized members of their young core like Chris Duarte and Isaiah Jackson.
Looking ahead to next offseason, the Pacers project to have over $70 million in cap space if they move Hield&rsquo;s contract. Also, like the Utah Jazz, Indiana is currently slated to have at least three first-round picks in the 2023 NBA Draft. Moving Turner and Hield for picks could also help Indiana in the tank race for Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson. With some lottery luck, they could land one of these potential superstars and usher in the next great era of Pacers basketball.
If the Pacers traded Turner and Hield for Westbrook (and then bought him out), they would have the perfect lineup for developing their young guys &mdash; and tanking.&nbsp;

Indiana is in the perfect spot to be aggressive when it comes to salary dumps. With cap flexibility over the next two summers until Haliburton is due for a massive pay raise, the Pacers can continue to stockpile future assets and kick the can down the road as their young core continues to develop together. This trade for Westbrook is a prime example where Indiana can take advantage, because those first-round picks from Los Angeles could be very valuable down the road.
Talks between the Lakers and Pacers have stalled, so it remains to be seen whether negotiations will pick back up. The next steps will be critical in order to re-ignite this potential pathway for offloading Westbrook.
It&rsquo;s a tough pill to swallow for Westbrook and the Lakers, but he&rsquo;s a negative asset at this stage of his illustrious career. The best course of action seems to be finally ending this marriage, and the rebuilding Pacers provide the ideal launchpad to change direction for good.

Lakers would be foolish to reject Pacers' offer for Russell Westbrook

Anyone remember the Denver Nuggets? Just a few short seasons ago, they advanced to the Western Conference Finals. They boast the back-to-back MVP winner. They&rsquo;ve won at least 46 games in five consecutive seasons. Anyone?
In all seriousness, the Nuggets have become something of an afterthought &mdash; mainly because they haven't been at full strength in recent years. Lead guard Jamal Murray suffered a knee injury late in the 2020-21 season, which led to most people writing them off. For all remaining optimists out there, a back injury shut down Michael Porter Jr. nine games into last season. The short-handed Nuggets still managed to win 48 games, but they were no match for the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.
But despite being overlooked, the future is bright in Denver. If Murray returns and looks like himself, the Nuggets should have more than enough to return to contention. A core of Nikola Jokic, Murray, Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon is impressive. But in a consistently competitive conference, nothing is guaranteed. So, Denver did what any smart organization would do in their position: round out their roster.
Denver added two key pieces in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Bruce Brown. Doing so cost them some notable players &mdash; namely, Will Barton and Monte Morris.
First, let's discuss the addition of Caldwell-Pope.&nbsp;
Caldwell-Pope is an accomplished scorer. Last year, in his ninth NBA season, he averaged 13.2 points per game for the Washington Wizards. While Barton was a mediocre three-point shooter, Caldwell-Pope knocked down 39.5% of his three-point attempts last season (and shot 41% from deep the year before). KCP is a significantly better defender too.
Caldwell-Pope looks like a really good fit for this team. He is a prototypical 3-and-D guy, and he's never been a high-usage player. In fact, despite posting the third-highest usage rate of his career in 2021-22, Caldwell-Pope ranked just 105th in the NBA. And still, his impact was felt.

While Caldwell-Pope may score more points, Brown should make an even greater impact. Like Caldwell-Pope, Brown can be classified as a 3-and-D-type player as well. However, his style and physical attributes make him more difficult to define.
At 6-foot-4, Brown can play all five positions, literally. He creates and distributes, defends on and off the ball and scores in a variety of ways, including at the rim, in transition and on the move without the ball.
Playing with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving created some unique opportunities in Brooklyn, but Brown could be even better in Denver considering he&rsquo;ll be alongside more willing passers in Jokic and Murray.
Not only can Brown play and defend any position, he also demonstrated his chops as a shooter last season. He connected on 40.4% of his three-point attempts after making only 28% in 2020-21. Brown also shot 66% at the rim and 48% from the short midrange, which ranked in the 62nd and 79th percentile among forwards.
Brown also takes care of the basketball. Despite playing in 72 games last season, there were only five contests in which Brown committed two or more turnovers.

Ultimately, Brown&rsquo;s versatility is his calling card. He can take on some of the scoring burden like Barton did. He can also help fill the void at back-up point guard created by trading Morris. But where Brown really improves Denver is on the defensive end of the floor, and that&rsquo;s something the Nuggets need. Denver ranked 15th in defensive rating in 2021-22 &ndash;&nbsp;the epitome of mediocre in the NBA.
Unlike Caldwell-Pope, who projects to be a starter, Brown will likely help out Denver&rsquo;s second unit. Similar to Gary Payton II, Brown can easily handle tough defensive assignments. And given his aforementioned versatility, he&rsquo;ll be able to sub in for any position.
Brown may end up being one of the biggest steals of this offseason considering the Nuggets got him on a two-year, $13.2 million deal. Sure, that&rsquo;s a relatively short-term contract (and he has a player option in year two), but adding a major rotation player for just $6.6 million per season is a huge win for any team.
An appropriate comparison for Brown is PJ Tucker, who can also play virtually every position and take on most defensive assignments. Adding a young Tucker-esque player at that cost is an absolute bargain. Oh, and Brown is still just 25 years old, meaning he'll probably get even better.
The Nuggets are finally healthy and they've added reinforcements, making them a contender to watch entering this season. And unlike past years, their success shouldn&rsquo;t be a surprise this season.

Denver was already a playoff team in a tough Western Conference. They'll be even better this year thanks to their offseason additions.

Bruce Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope raise the Nuggets' ceiling

Damian Lillard's new contract with the Trail Blazers is a point of pride for the six-time All Star who has spent his entire career in Portland.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think that you earn something like this just by going out there and scoring a bunch of points," he said. "Something that&rsquo;s missing in our league is character, and the fight and the passion and pride about, you know, not just the name on the back, but the name on the front, and how you impact the people that you come in contact with."
Lillard agreed to a two-year extension through the 2026-27 season. A person with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal is worth $225 million.
Lillard formally signed the extension with his son on his lap and his grandmother watching by phone from Oakland. He spoke at a news conference Saturday evening at the NBA's summer league in Las Vegas.
Lillard will make about $59 million in 2025-26, then about $63 million the next year, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the extension has not been announced.
He&rsquo;ll make about $137 million over the next three seasons, before the extension begins.
&ldquo;There are two kinds of teams: teams that are looking for superstars and teams that are looking for one. We&rsquo;re lucky enough to have one,&rdquo; Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. &ldquo;One who wants to be here.&rdquo;
Lillard was limited to 29 games this past season because of a core injury that required surgery. The Blazers finished 27-55, their worst record since 2005-06.
While Lillard was sidelined, the team cleaned house, pulling off a number of trades before the February deadline &mdash; including sending backcourt teammate CJ McCollum to New Orleans &mdash; that got the Blazers under the luxury tax and freed up cap space.
The Blazers then made a series of offseason moves to build around Lillard. Portland acquired Jerami Grant from the Detroit Pistons and signed free agent Gary Payton II, who was key to Golden State's championship run.
Lillard played with Grant on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at last year&rsquo;s Tokyo Olympics. Grant averaged 19.2 points in 47 games last season with the Pistons.
Lillard said he believes the team is headed in the right direction.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m as anxious as I&rsquo;ve ever been to get out there and make something happen," he said. "I&rsquo;m in a great space mentally and physically. I&rsquo;m gonna come into this season comfortable and ready to do me, and do me at the highest level.&rdquo;
Lillard, who turns 32 on July 15, said that in addition to healing his body over the past several months, he also got a mental break that he believes will make his a better player going forward.
&ldquo;In my entire career, I haven&rsquo;t been injured. I&rsquo;ve had one injury that put me out, and that was when I was in college and I broke my foot. And that was the last time that I got to step away,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t recreate myself, I just charged back up and I came back and I was better than I had ever been.&rdquo;
He has averaged 24.6 points in his career. He was selected as a member of the league&rsquo;s top 75 players as part of the NBA&rsquo;s 75th anniversary celebration this past season.
