The 2023 NBA Draft could go down as a special class, with talented prospects such as Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller and the Thompson twins as well as some interesting depth pieces.
But will it ever be considered one of the best draft classes in NBA history? That remains to be seen.
Today, we're going to identify the cr&egrave;me de la cr&egrave;me of NBA draft classes.
The 2003 NBA Draft
The 2003 NBA Draft featured multiple generational talents that would come to define the NBA for the next two decades. Led by LeBron James, this class also included household names such as Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Not only did this draft have star power, it was also very deep. Twenty-seven players from the 2003 class played at least 10 seasons in the NBA: James, Wade, Anthony, Bosh, Kyle Korver, David West, Zaza Pachulia, Nick Collison, Boris Diaw, Kendrick Perkins, Leandro Barbosa, James Jones, Chris Kaman, Kirk Hinrich, Dahntay Jones, Steve Blake, Mo Williams, Luke Ridnour, Willie Green, Matt Bonner, Travis Outlaw, Keith Bogans, Darko Milicic, Mickael Pietrus, Sasha Pavlovic, Josh Howard and Luke Walton. This class featured nine All-Stars and plenty of quality role players.
The 1984 NBA Draft
The 1984 NBA Draft stands as a legendary class, and some might argue that it's the greatest draft of all-time. Two of the top three picks &mdash; Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon &mdash; would ultimately etch their names in the annals of basketball history and redefine greatness. In addition to Jordan and Olajuwon, players like Charles Barkley, John Stockton and Alvin Robertson showcased their immense talent as well. This class produced five Hall-of-Famers and seven All-Stars.
The 1996 NBA Draft
The 1996 NBA Draft changed the landscape of the league, heralding the arrival of future Hall-of-Famers and icons. Led by the legendary Kobe Bryant and the enigmatic Allen Iverson, this class boasted an array of talent that reinvigorated the game. This class also featured Ray Allen, Steve Nash, Jermaine O'Neal, Ben Wallace, Stephon Marbury, Peja Stojakovic, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Antoine Walker, Marcus Camby, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Derek Fisher. The 1996 NBA Draft was deep, producing 10 All-Stars and five Hall-of-Famers. The 1985 NBA Draft
The 1985 NBA Draft was certainly special. This class featured 10 All-Stars including Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Joe Dumars, Detlef Schrempf, Xavier McDaniel, Charles Oakley, &nbsp;AC Green, Terry Porter and Michael Adams. The class also featured Arvydas Sabonis, an overseas legend and terrific Portland Trail Blazer. Like the 1996 NBA Draft, this class has the star power and depth to be considered one of the best drafts in NBA history.
The 2009 NBA Draft
While not as immediately illustrious as some of the other classes on this list, the 2009 NBA Draft proved to be a treasure trove of talent. This class exemplified the importance of patience and player development, as Stephen Curry, James Harden, Blake Griffin, DeMar DeRozan, Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague would all go on to become All-Stars. Griffin missed his rookie year with an injury, but dominated as soon as he stepped on an NBA court. Curry battled injuries early in his career, but would become a four-time champion and two-time MVP. Harden went from being an elite sixth man to an MVP once he got the opportunity in Houston. This class also featured Brandon Jennings, Ricky Rubio, Tyreke Evans, Darren Collison, Ty Lawson, Patty Mills, Danny Green, Taj Gibson and Patrick Beverley among others.

Exploring the 5 best draft classes in NBA history

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; Deandre Ayton notched season highs with 29 points and 21 rebounds, Devin Booker added 27 points and the Phoenix Suns held on for a hard-fought 113-112 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.
The Jazz led 81-78 after three quarters, but the Suns pushed ahead 99-93 by midway through the fourth. The game remained tight through the final minutes, but Phoenix never lost the lead. On top of Ayton's scoring and rebounding, he also had a crucial steal in the final minutes that helped thwart a final Jazz rally.
Ayton grabbed his 21th rebound of the game on the final possession, securing Booker's miss off a 3-pointer to keep the Jazz from a final possession.
Curiously, the Jazz didn't foul the Suns on their final possession, essentially allowing them to run out the clock.
Ayton scored a season high for the second straight night. He poured in 28 points against the Pistons in a 108-102 win on Friday. Booker had a tough night shooting, making just 8 of 27 shots.
Utah was one of the NBA&rsquo;s surprise teams in the first few weeks of the season, starting with a 10-3 record. The Jazz are just 3-7 since that point.
The Suns have an 11-1 record at home this season and have won four straight games.
Jordan Clarkson scored 22 points for the Jazz. Collin Sexton added 20 while Lauri Markkanen had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jazz had a 54-51 lead at halftime. Clarkson led the Jazz with 12 points while Ayton had 11 points and seven rebounds.

One month into the 2022-23 NBA season, the Utah Jazz have exceeded all expectations. After trading Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Bojan Bogdanovic and Royce O&rsquo;Neale and replacing head coach Quin Snyder with 34-year-old Will Hardy, Utah was expected to plummet down the standings and enter the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.
Instead, the Jazz are 10-6, with wins over the Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Clippers among others. Utah currently has the NBA&rsquo;s seventh-best offense (scoring 111.4 points per 100 possessions) and 12th-best defense (allowing 108.7 points per 100 possessions).&nbsp;
They have a balanced attack, with six players averaging double-digit points: Lauri Markkanen (21.3), Jordan Clarkson (17.9), Collin Sexton (13.3), Kelly Olynyk (13.2), Malik Beasley (12.3) and Mike Conley (10.7). This team plays extremely hard and makes a ton of hustle plays.&nbsp;
And unlike the other franchises that were projected to tank entering this season, the Jazz aren&rsquo;t a super young team. Utah&rsquo;s roster has an average age of 25.86 years old, which is significantly older than the youngest teams in the league &ndash; the Oklahoma City Thunder (23.14), Houston Rockets (23.58), San Antonio Spurs (23.84) and Orlando Magic (23.94). While the Jazz are assembling an impressive young core, they&rsquo;ve gotten huge contributions from experienced players like Markkanen, Olynyk, Clarkson, Beasley, Sexton, Conley and Jarred Vanderbilt.
Entering this week, Utah sat atop the Western Conference standings. However, after losing three-straight games, the Jazz have slid to fourth-place in the West.&nbsp;
Was Utah&rsquo;s early-season success a fluke or can they sustain this level of play going forward? Will they keep this core together or eventually trade away some of their veterans for additional draft picks and prospects? BasketballNews.com reached out to an anonymous NBA scout and picked their brain about Utah&rsquo;s impressive start to this season.
&ldquo;They&rsquo;re off to such a hot start, and they&rsquo;ve got a lot of guys who are really confident,&rdquo; the anonymous NBA scout told BasketballNews.com. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m a big Jordan Clarkson guy and he has really emerged. He&rsquo;s always been a scorer, but I think he knows that he has to be good night in and night out and he has to lead the charge for this team. Lauri Markkanen is killing it, and I&rsquo;m really happy for him. This is what we thought Lauri Markkanen would be when the Bulls took him [No. 7 overall]. It took some time, but this is the guy we thought he might become. I think Kelly Olynyk is a great veteran, and so is Mike Conley. They have a solid bench with Collin Sexton. I&rsquo;m a Walker Kessler guy; I think he&rsquo;s actually going to be a really good big. And then they&rsquo;ve got Talen Horton-Tucker... When they acquired Ochai Agbaji and Leandro Bolmaro, I thought those guys would get an opportunity to play, but they really haven't gotten opportunities because there&rsquo;s so much depth! They have a lot of veterans who have been very productive.
&ldquo;I just feel they made a lot of nice moves, even though they weren&rsquo;t considered &lsquo;sexy.&rsquo; They weren&rsquo;t [additions] that many people thought would make this huge difference, but they&rsquo;re all playing really well together. I like their team, and I think they are coached really well. I think [their early success] is a testament to their coaching staff and the great job that they&rsquo;ve done.&rdquo;
Is this sustainable? That&rsquo;s the question that everyone is asking about this year&rsquo;s Jazz. The NBA scout thinks that Utah is for real.
&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s sustainable,&rdquo; said the NBA scout. &ldquo;They hear all of the noise [about tanking], and they heard it going into the year, but they&rsquo;ve got a bunch of guys on that roster who know how to compete and play hard, they&rsquo;ve got good leadership from their vets, they&rsquo;ve got a lot of talent and guys who can play, and they have a lot of guys who have faced adversity at some point in their career. They&rsquo;re just kind of built in a unique way.&nbsp;
&ldquo;As for what I&rsquo;ve seen from them, obviously they can score on you in bunches. They have multiple guys who can initiate offense. They have bigs who can stretch the floor. They have shooting. One area that really matters once you get to the playoffs is legit rim protection, so hopefully Walker Kessler can be that for them. I think there are a few areas to circle and keep tabs on, but they&rsquo;re playing really well. They play hard and bring so much energy.&rdquo;

The scout had a ton of praise for Will Hardy, who is a first-time head coach.
&ldquo;I think the coaching staff deserves a ton of credit. I think there&rsquo;s a bunch of buy-in and trust,&rdquo; the anonymous NBA scout said. &ldquo;And when they have a deficit or they struggle in different phases, it seems like they always break through. They have a really good way of fighting through those struggles, and I think that&rsquo;s always a sign of a good team. It&rsquo;s a reason why they&rsquo;re one of the best teams in the league. They&rsquo;ve won close games, and they&rsquo;ve finished games where they didn&rsquo;t play well and found ways to win. I think that&rsquo;s a testament to the coaches and everyone over there.
&ldquo;You look at everything that went on over this offseason, losing Quin Snyder was a big deal; I think Quin Snyder is a great coach. But it can&rsquo;t be overlooked the job that Will is doing. Will is a great example of a young coach who got his opportunity and made the most of it. You look at how these guys respond to him and what he&rsquo;s done so far, it&rsquo;s really impressive. I think there&rsquo;s a lot of great young coaches and assistants out there who are emerging, and that should be a bigger story. I think it&rsquo;s a great thing. As much as we talk about the young talent in the league and how the NBA is in great hands, it can&rsquo;t be overstated how good these young coaches have been and Will is a great testament of that. There are so many young coaches who are showing that they really know what they are doing, and I think that&rsquo;s great for the league.&rdquo;

Before this hot start, many people around the NBA expected the Jazz to continue moving their veterans for draft picks or young talent. The general consensus was that rival executives from playoff teams would be circling Conley, Clarkson and Olynyk like vultures, and that Utah would look to continue stockpiling draft capital. Now, is it possible that Danny Ainge and Co. decide to keep this core together and see if they can make a run? Or, given that these veterans have increased their trade value, is Ainge more likely to wheel-and-deal?
&ldquo;I think you ride it out with these guys because they&rsquo;re playing so well,&rdquo; the NBA scout said. &ldquo;Entering the year, I think there was a lot of thought around them having some movable players and movable assets. Knowing what they were doing and [how they were positioned] going into the year, it felt like this is just what Danny does. Now, the fact that they are winning games and this new coaching staff [is succeeding], you&rsquo;re building a culture. You build a culture by winning games. You can&rsquo;t overlook that in this process.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I know team-building is the bigger picture here, but they&rsquo;ve put themselves in a great position; I think what they got back in their trades &ndash; particularly in the Rudy trade &ndash; was just next level, and I was not expecting that. I think they&rsquo;re in a great spot and they&rsquo;re winning games &ndash; and that&rsquo;s still a good thing! I think too often, we shy away from teams winning games to &lsquo;rebuild,&rsquo; but it&rsquo;s not a bad thing to continue winning games and build your culture.&rdquo;
Only time will tell whether the Jazz can keep this up, but there&rsquo;s no question that they have been a fun story and pleasant surprise in recent weeks.

NBA Expansion Mock Draft: What would a new expansion team look like?

When Quin Snyder walked out of the door with his resignation as head coach last month, it was the first of many dominoes to fall toward the Utah Jazz's intention to rebuild.
&ldquo;And I think it&rsquo;s pretty clear, we desperately wanted him to stay,&rdquo; Jazz head of basketball operations Danny Ainge said during Snyder&rsquo;s final press conference.
Since Snyder officially left his perch in Utah, foundational layers have begun to peel away from a consistent contender who never got over the hump in the Western Conference.
It all started minutes into the new league year beginning, first with veteran wing Royce O&rsquo;Neale being traded to the Brooklyn Nets for a 2023 first-round pick. Then, less than 24 hours later, the Jazz dealt three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Utah received a historic haul of draft picks in return, with three unprotected and a 2029 first-round selection top-three protected.
With the team prioritizing future assets from Minnesota in a Gobert blockbuster over win-now pieces to potentially retool on the fly, the smoke around Donovan Mitchell&rsquo;s looming departure is reaching new levels of formality.
According to The Athletic&rsquo;s Shams Charania and Tony Jones, the Jazz are now <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/knicks-and-jazz-discussing-donovan-mitchell-trade" target="_blank" rel="noopener">openly listening to trade calls on Mitchell</a>, and the New York Knicks are a top contender for his services. Although, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski added Monday that the Jazz "aren't in a rush" to move Mitchell.
But at this point, there&rsquo;s no reason to believe Mitchell wants to stay put in Utah long-term, and Ainge has put this "teardown" formula to use before, particularly when he overhauled the Boston Celtics in the summer of 2013; instead of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, Gobert and Mitchell have presented the Jazz the perfect opportunity to bottom out when it makes the most sense to do so.

As currently constructed, the Jazz are maybe the No. 8 seed in the West simply due to Mitchell&rsquo;s presence. Already drastically different with Gobert&rsquo;s departure, it never really made much sense to stay in the middle of the pack. Their championship window suddenly shut on them when Synder &mdash; the mastermind behind the the team&rsquo;s rise &mdash; left the building for good.
Luckily for the Jazz, who appear more than ready to fully submerge themselves into the tank race, Mitchell&rsquo;s hometown team in New York presents the right mixture of draft capital and intriguing young prospects to quickly make a deal where both sides could walk away happy.
The star-craved Knicks have been waiting for this moment. As soon as they traded out of the 2022 NBA Draft at No. 11 overall for future draft capital &mdash; which also helped clear space to sign new starting point guard Jalen Brunson &mdash; the franchise started to leave a trail of breadcrumbs. New York has the ammunition to strike, and Mitchell feels like the prize its front office has coveted all along.
With so many connections to Mitchell in New York, including the CAA agency ties with team president Leon Rose, the stars all align. No more false promises on delivering a star to the Big Apple; this time, it would be accomplished with emphasis by acquiring a top-20 player with consistent All-NBA upside. Mitchell&rsquo;s score-first mindset was made for an environment like Madison Square Garden, and it wouldn&rsquo;t come as any surprise if we found out that he's been pulling some strings to make this marriage happen as well.
Entering the second season of his five-year rookie max extension, Mitchell&rsquo;s prime years as a 6-foot-1 guard who relies heavily on athleticism and explosion are within this current window. For the Knicks, their core &mdash; headlined by the rising RJ Barrett and veteran Julius Randle &mdash; is about ready to take a step forward. And after a season where reality hit hard that they weren&rsquo;t as close as internally expected, a big splash might be the necessary antidote to reviving the New York&rsquo;s hopes.
The bar has been set in Utah on what the Jazz want most in return for their building blocks: All of the future draft picks legally possible.
The Jazz found a team in Minnesota willing to cough up valuable future picks alongside multiple young prospects under years of team control (Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler). Look for Ainge and Co. to want even more from the Knicks or any other team inquiring on Mitchell. Preparing for this chance to bring Mitchell home, New York has eight projected first-round picks over the next four years, which totals up to a whopping 12 selections through 2029. If the Jazz get what they want for Mitchell, that number could match or exceed the historic amount of assets that the Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Pelicans stockpiled in their past superstar-blockbuster deals.

So, what would a deal even look like where a homecoming happens for Mitchell and the Knicks? In order to match salaries, they would need to send out around $25 million. New York can quickly get to that figure by including either or both of Evan Fournier and Derrick Rose, the latter of whom has a pseudo-expiring contract because of a team option. From there, the Knicks have a plethora of young talent to put together a viable package: Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes, Miles McBride, Cam Reddish, Rokas Jokubaitis (2021 draft-and-stash). Picking two from that bunch feels fair on top of the draft-pick barrage.
This will likely turn into a stalemate until one side caves, but the Jazz and Knicks can craft together a win-win framework &mdash; it'll just have to be haggled over on the negotiation table beforehand.
In my opinion, a construct like this feels like it could be a realistic outcome where Mitchell suits up opening night for the Knicks in MSG.

Jazz receive: Quentin Grimes, Miles McBride, Rokas Jokubaitis, Evan Fournier, Derrick Rose, 2023 first-round pick (via Wizards), 2023 first-round pick (via Mavericks), 2024 first-round pick (unprotected), 2025 first-round pick (via Bucks), 2025 pick swap, 2026 first-round pick (unprotected), 2027 pick swap, 2028 first-round pick (top-3 protected), 2029 pick swap
In total, it would be an absolute haul for the Jazz centered around six first-round picks and multiple swaps, but one that still doesn&rsquo;t really gut much of New York&rsquo;s core of young talent. Under this scenario, Utah would own 18 first-round picks over the next six drafts, which is absolutely jaw-dropping.
Once the Jazz realized their title window shut on them before ever making a significant postseason push, the organization has been open to the idea of blowing it all up. Unable to overcome past failures, Utah is now about to enter foreign territory, bottoming completely out for years at a time. However, having Ainge running the rebuild should give those in Utah confidence that there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Ainge pulled off Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum in Boston, and now the Jazz need him to pull multiple rabbits out of his hat along the way.

Why a Donovan Mitchell trade between Knicks and Jazz feels inevitable

NBA Summer League is a showcase for some of the top young talent in basketball. It also gives those on the fringes of the league a chance to break out, and reveal inspirational journeys of perseverance in the process.
Boston Celtics swingman Matt Ryan canned a game-winner on Monday to cap a performance I'll highlight in this roundup. But perhaps the best part came in his postgame interview:

Murphy put on a full scoring display to open the afternoon. The second-year forward impressed me particularly with how he reached the rim off the dribble, changing speeds and using ball-screens to get downhill. He's a lot bigger and stronger than I've given him credit for; he finished hard through contact multiple times.
Of course, Murphy also knocked down a few long three-pointers, which has been his calling card since entering the league. He's been one of the most impressive scorers at Summer League to date, and hopefully it helps Murphy carve his niche in a deep Pelicans rotation.

If you want to call Eason the rookie MVP of the summer, I'd hear you out. The No. 17 overall pick seems to get better every game, and against the San Antonio Spurs, Eason unleashed his most prolific two-way performance.
His defense remains top-notch for a young player. Eason punctuated his effort with an awesome defensive rotation and block in the third quarter. Then on offense, he was scoring buckets as a rolling lob threat, an off-dribble driver and a corner shooter. I've reached the stage with Eason where I'm constantly reminding myself not to overreact about his talent.

Ryan was the hero in Boston's 111-109 win over Milwaukee thanks to his buzzer-beating three-pointer that included a twisted ankle in the process. But he caught fire throughout the contest. Ryan is excellent at relocating, and specifically earned some open looks when he capitalized on the chaos of an offensive rebound or loose ball.
Ryan played a grand total of five minutes with Boston last season after coming from the Grant Rapids Gold. With so many open roster spots, the Celtics could easily bring him back or sign him to a two-way contract.

Though the Bucks lost their matchup against Boston, they had two outstanding individual performances. The first came from Mamukelashvili, the No. 54 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Mamukelashvili only had a pair of assists, but I thought they were two signifcant reads: a corner dart to an open MarJon Beauchamp three-pointer, and a dump-off from a drive to AJ Green. They complemented a versatile scoring performance, and he went toe-to-toe with Boston's Mfiondu Kabengele in a great battle that might have ended with the above posterization.
I liked some of Mamukelashvili's defensive moments too. He stuck to Juhann Begarin, an athletic driving wing, and picked up 2 blocks. It was a pretty great all-around effort for a player who could give Milwaukee some quality frontcourt depth.

Wigginton was throwing dimes all over the court. His 6 turnovers don't do Wigginton justice, as 2 of those were great passes that Wigginton's teammates simply mishandled. Wigginton assisted Mamukelashvili on three of his makes and also pushed the Bucks forward on fast breaks.
As a scorer, the second-year guard used ball-screens to find a lane or force a switch, which he punished twice with pull-up twos. Defenders sometimes went under screens, and Wigginton responded by drilling some high-arcing threes. He balanced creativity with poise as a lead guard.

As the above Tweet implies, we will be lucky to see the No. 2 pick swatting shots for a long, long time. Holmgren's incredible instincts and timing aren't any new revelation, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate them over and over again.
Orlando did not defend Holmgren as a roller particularly well in this one, and he found some easy finishes as a result. He also hit the defense with a sweet step-back three and positions himself well for dump-offs from passers like Josh Giddey. The only area I'd nitpick is that he sometimes tried to do too much as a ball-handler and coughed up some turnovers. But why not try to get creative in this setting?

It's been a really rough week for Cooper as an offensive player. He's made 1 of his 14 field goal attempts through two games, and there isn't much to be optimistic about with his scoring flashes. Cooper really struggled to create easy looks at the rim. There were times where he'd even beat his defender on a drive and have them pinned on his hip, but he lacked the vertical explosion and strength to turn the advantages into quality chances. His perimeter shot looked inconsistent and timid. Hopefully, Cooper can turn things around, because we've seen so much more from him in the past year.
Leandro Bolmaro, Utah Jazz

The Jazz eked out a win over the Dallas Mavericks despite some ghastly individual shooting nights. Bolmaro was determined to attack the Mavs off the dribble. The aggression was great, but it often came with a low-quality shot because he could not beat a defender, or he would drive into a crowd. I do want to credit Dallas because the team collectively played great defense against Bolmaro. The former Minnesota T-Wolves swingman also missed some must-have layups that I'm not concerned about in the future.

This is another dud performance that I wouldn't be concerned about long-term. Houstan spaced the floor extremely well, was active as a cutter and even displayed some confidence attacking closeouts. He just missed shots that he should make. Now, if you're a skeptic of Houstan as a shooter based on his time at Michigan, then maybe this outing means more to you. I'm a firm believer in Houstan being one of the more talented pure movement threats in this draft class, so an off night isn't a harbinger for me.
Tre Mann, Oklahoma City Thunder
Box score stats: 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3/14 FG, 1/6 3PT
In a similar vein, Mann has proven from his flashes in the regular season that he's going to be an NBA-caliber scorer. Though Mann's Monday effort won't mean much in the long run, I felt he made some odd decisions on when to attack vs. settle/pass.
Sometimes ,Mann would try and make too much happen off the bounce against a stout Magic defense. On one other play, he had what appeared to be an easy rim attack, but hesitated and shot a three that ended up letting a defender back in the picture to contest. These are probably microscopic miscues, but I definitely want to monitor how Mann works alongside primary playmakers in Giddey and Jalen Williams.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have officially pushed their chips to the middle of the table. Under new management (Tim Connelly) and new ownership (Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore), the new-look Timberwolves are ready to make a splash within the reloaded Western Conference.
On July 1, Minnesota pulled off arguably their biggest trade in franchise history, securing three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert from the Utah Jazz for a haul of assets. The Timberwolves sent Utah all of the following for their All-Star center: Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler (who was just selected in the first round), 2023 first-round pick, 2025 first-round pick, 2026 pick swap, 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick (top-five protected). It's a massive price for Minnesota to pay, and the Jazz simply couldn&rsquo;t refuse the franchise-changing package.
Minnesota hired Connelly away from the Denver Nuggets earlier this offseason, giving him equity and a five-year deal worth around $40 million. It didn't take long for the new president of basketball operations to put his fingerprints all over the Wolves' roster. Connelly has long admired Gobert, and he actually drafted him back in 2013 before shipping his rights off to Utah in a draft-night deal. Gobert would blossom into one of the most dominant defensive forces in recent NBA history &mdash; singlehandedly transforming the Jazz into an elite unit on that end of the court.
Once Gobert arrived in Minneapolis, there were some questioning his long-term fit alongside fellow star big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who just inked a new supermax extension this week. However, the Timberwolves feel this duo can transcend the current small-ball movement within the Association, with Gobert serving as the accelerant that Minnesota has needed to make a deep postseason run.
&ldquo;[Gobert] doesn&rsquo;t inhibit anything we have presently, he makes them better,&rdquo; Connelly said during Gobert&rsquo;s introductory press conference on Wednesday. &ldquo;He augments what we have presently. So, when you look at fit, it&rsquo;s not just about talent, it&rsquo;s about kinda developing a team. When you see KAT and you see [D&rsquo;Angelo Russell] and you see [Anthony Edwards], he&rsquo;s just going to make them better without kinda putting a roadblock on some of the natural progression we&rsquo;ve seen the last couple of years. Collectively, all those things are very hard to find. And when we were able to pull the trigger, we were excited to do so.&rdquo;
Minnesota now has the infrastructure to be scheme-versatile, throwing out different lineup combinations to throw off opposing defenses. With an offensive mastermind like Chris Finch coaching a terrific defensive anchor in Gobert, many people seem to be underselling the immediate impact of this acquisition around the organization.
With the Gobert-Towns duo presenting mismatch problems on a nightly basis and the Wolves&rsquo; current defensive infrastructure, this squad has a ton of potential. Defense-first wings such as Taurean Prince, Jaden McDaniels and Kyle Anderson will log heavy minutes alongside Gobert, Towns and Edwards. After boasting the NBA's 9th-ranked offense and 13th-ranked defense last season, Minnesota will be even scarier as a balanced, two-way threat going forward.

On Wednesday, the Wolves&rsquo; braintrust spoke glowingly about the impact that Gobert will have on a franchise that has only had one 50-win season over the last 20-plus years.
&ldquo;It was the perfect fit at the perfect time for the organization,&rdquo; Finch said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not often you get the chance to add somebody who brings such a level of professionalism, maturity and experience alongside a young core who fits seamlessly into what we need &mdash; and what we need most.&rdquo;
The Timberwolves have coveted a piece like Gobert, who can turn certain weaknesses (such as their rebounding and defense) into strengths. The equity Gobert provides can go unnoticed, but the possession-by-possession value will be felt immediately by Minnesota.
&ldquo;When you look at players of Rudy&rsquo;s abilities, they don&rsquo;t become available very often," Connelly said. "I think he&rsquo;s a seamless fit both culturally and on the court in terms of what he can bring to us as a player and as a person. We&rsquo;re trying to develop winning ways. We&rsquo;re trying to develop a sustainable team and enjoy winning at the highest level. He&rsquo;s seen that. He&rsquo;s seen it at the [French] national team. Obviously, [as a] multi-time Defensive Player of the Year. This guy is going to be a Hall-of-Famer. I&rsquo;ve been in the NBA a long, long time and there&rsquo;s only been a handful of those types of calls [for] those types of players that you think can become actionable.
"We gave up some really good players. We lost some guys that were unbelievably impactful, kinda changing this culture. We saw how fun last year was. So, it&rsquo;s never easy. You don&rsquo;t want to be dismissive of the guys you give up, obviously a lot of draft capital, but when you get a call, the one we got about Rudy, pretty quickly you realize how unique the situation is and you want to be as aggressive as possible.&rdquo;

That aggressiveness has helped propel Minnesota forward, and it's possible that the Wolves could improve their win total by double-digits next season (after winning 46 games last year). Take a quick look at the Timberwolves&rsquo; projected rotation, which doesn&rsquo;t have many holes.

The Wolves can roll nine deep within their rotation, and they have three potential All-NBA players within their starting lineup. Minnesota's two-way potential is off the charts, and it's possible that the addition of Gobert can help the Wolves ascend to a level of success they haven&rsquo;t experienced since the Kevin Garnett era.
If Gobert's impact on the Jazz is any indication, Minnesota could become a regular-season juggernaut with a top-tier defense. Over the past two seasons in Utah, Gobert carried the NBA&rsquo;s best defensive unit. With Gobert off the court, Utah plummeted into the bottom third of the Association in defensive rating.

Simply put, it's incredible that a single player could have such an enormous impact. Having Gobert will make life a lot easier for the Wolves' other players and Finch.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a defensive microcosm unto himself,&rdquo; Finch said of Gobert. &ldquo;I think we&rsquo;re going to have to build a system that&rsquo;s flexible enough to be able to take on the different looks we&rsquo;re going to see. Some of that&rsquo;s going to happen as we go along; some of that we prepare for. Offensively, I don&rsquo;t see a whole lot changing, honestly.&rdquo;
When Gobert first learned of Minnesota&rsquo;s interest, he was surprised because of Towns&rsquo; presence. However, the more he thought about the potential pairing alongside KAT, Gobert loved the idea. He's excited about this new challenge and environment. Gobert told his agent that he needed a day or two to think about it. But later that night, as Gobert put it, he realized that playing next to a generational offensive talent in the frontcourt would be the most exciting possibility for his career.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to be very unique,&rdquo; Gobert said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think there&rsquo;s going to be another team that&rsquo;s going to be able to bring to the table what we bring to the table. And my goal [is to] make Karl a better player on both ends and make his life easier, allow him to be better than he already is. I think his presence is going to do the same for me.&rdquo;

The Gobert-Towns duo will force teams to pick their poison on either end, and a coach like Finch will quickly figure out how to exploit those leaks on a consistent basis. Also, the potential for Edwards and Russell&rsquo;s games to blossom alongside Gobert can&rsquo;t be overlooked. Minnesota is betting on Edwards to take the leap to superstar, and his recent postseason performance suggests that he&rsquo;s ready to do so. Russell should also see much easier looks and improve his efficiency, especially in the pick-and-roll thanks to Gobert&rsquo;s in-action gravity effect.
This a gamble that is going to play out over the next four years in Minnesota, but it's rare for a small-market team to have a trio of stars. The Wolves aren't afraid to spend money in order to take the next step as a franchise; in 2025-26, Gobert and Towns will make a combined $99.5 million, and that doesn't include Edwards' upcoming rookie-scale max extension.
When the Timberwolves began exploring serious trade discussions to add another star-caliber player, Gobert was the target who stood out most.
&ldquo;A couple weeks ago, we put names on the board that we thought were elite guys, guys that were difference-makers,&rdquo; Connelly said. &ldquo;[It's] a very small list &mdash; we have a couple of those guys on our team. When you&rsquo;re able to add a difference-maker and not trade a guy in that kinda similar tier, it&rsquo;s rare. So, when we started having those discussions more specifically, his name kept popping up.&rdquo;
Like all trades, it will take years before we know whether the Wolves made the right move. The decision to go all-in is all about opportunity cost, and Minnesota simply felt that Utah's asking price was worth it.&nbsp;
&ldquo;When you add a guy like Rudy, it&rsquo;s hard not to get excited and it&rsquo;s hard not to be overly risk-adverse and throw your chips in a bit,&rdquo; Connelly said.
Don&rsquo;t sleep on the Timberwolves next season. After adding Gobert, they are poised to have an elite unit on both ends of the court, making Minnesota a very dangerous dark horse in the Western Conference.

Timberwolves make aggressive push for greatness with Rudy Gobert trade

Rudy Gobert reads Twitter comments, so he&rsquo;s aware that Minnesota fans didn&rsquo;t like him very much during his first nine NBA seasons. And he also heard Timberwolves coach Chris Finch complain regularly about the way he sets screens.
Those perspectives are probably going to change.
&ldquo;Now we&rsquo;re on the same side, so I&rsquo;m excited,&rdquo; Gobert said.
So is Minnesota, with good reason. The Timberwolves announced the acquisition of Gobert at a news conference in Minneapolis on Wednesday, when the trade that they agreed to make with the Utah Jazz last week could finally become official. It took four players, five first-round picks &mdash; including one made last month &mdash; and the option of swapping another pick to get the French center to Minnesota, and the Timberwolves still feel like they got the better of the deal.
&ldquo;We think that he fits perfectly inside of what we already do," Finch said.
In a league that has become increasingly positionless, where small-ball reigns at times, the Timberwolves now have two of the league&rsquo;s very best big men in the same lineup with a three-time defensive player of the year in Gobert playing alongside All-NBA performer Karl-Anthony Towns.
&ldquo;He doesn&rsquo;t inhibit anything we have presently,&rdquo; Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said. &ldquo;He makes it better. He augments what we have presently. The Utah-Minnesota trade was executed shortly after the NBA&rsquo;s moratorium on most offseason player movement and contract signings was lifted on Wednesday.
Many of the deals, such as Memphis&rsquo; Ja Morant and New Orleans&rsquo; Zion Williamson getting rookie extensions worth at least $193 million over a five-season span from 2023-24 through 2027-28 &mdash; both now official &mdash; were agreed to last week, but couldn&rsquo;t be completed until that moratorium ended.
Also now signed: <a href="https://apnews.com/article/washington-wizards-nba-sports-bradley-beal-926200389e0727e5854808758e7aa599">Bradley Beal&rsquo;s new deal in Washington,</a> a five-year contract worth $251 million for the Wizards&rsquo; franchise player.
&ldquo;Today represents such a special moment in my life,&rdquo; Beal said.
Williamson signed his extension on his 22nd birthday.
&ldquo;Just want to say thank you all for believing in me, just giving a kid like me a chance to showcase my abilities and help bring the team hopefully multiple championships,&rdquo; said Williamson, who has missed most of his first three NBA seasons with injuries but got a max extension anyway. &ldquo;Most of all, I thank you all for really sticking with me the past year.&rdquo;
The final agreement in the Utah-Minnesota deal was this: Gobert to the Timberwolves for Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, the rights to newly drafted Walker Kessler, Minnesota&rsquo;s 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029 first-round picks and a 2026 first-round pick swap.
Jazz owner Ryan Smith said Gobert &ldquo;will forever be a part of us.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Rudy Gobert had a huge impact on this franchise and the entire state of Utah during his nine seasons with the Jazz,&rdquo; Smith said. &ldquo;One of the greatest defensive players in NBA history, Rudy will forever be considered one of the most significant players to wear a Jazz uniform. His love for and impact on this community are impossible to overstate.&rdquo;
The Jazz saw coach Quin Snyder step down last month after eight seasons and hired former San Antonio and Boston assistant <a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-antonio-spurs-boston-celtics-utah-jazz-nba-sports-49409ee9335b18228e63b319c30786a0">Will Hardy to replace him.</a> Then came the Gobert trade, ending an era in Utah. No team in the Western Conference has won more regular season games over the last six seasons than the Jazz, but the success never carried over into the postseason. Utah made the playoffs in each of those six years, not getting past the second round.
&ldquo;The window for winning is not always big,&rdquo; Gobert said. &ldquo;For us in Utah, that&rsquo;s kind of what happened. I think the organization felt like that. We had maybe passed that window that we had over the last few years. I think it&rsquo;s still going to be a very competitive team. It just felt like with all the assets that they could get for me, it was better for them to go that way.&rdquo;
The Timberwolves might be the opposite. They haven&rsquo;t seen the second round in nearly two decades, and are betting that Towns, Gobert, Anthony Edwards and D&rsquo;Angelo Russell can become a core to change all that.
&ldquo;The goal is to win a championship,&rdquo; Gobert said. &ldquo;I came here for that. I didn&rsquo;t come here just to be a good team. I came here to try to take this team to the finals and accomplish that.&rdquo;

The Utah Jazz, following a disjointed and disappointing 2021-22 campaign, ripped off the proverbial band-aid in regards to their star duo. Donovan Mitchell is still in Utah; Rudy Gobert is on the move.
Gobert has been shipped to the Minnesota Timberwolves for quite the haul: Jarred Vanderbilt, Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, Leandro Balmaro, 2022 draftee Walker Kessler, three unprotected first-round picks (2023, 2025, 2027), a first-round pick swap in 2026 and a top-five protected first-round pick in 2029.
Whew. Got all that?
It was part two of the Pick Acquisition Plan for the Jazz, following Royce O'Neale being sent to the Brooklyn Nets for a 2023 first-rounder. The Jazz are equipped with all kinds of pick flexibility to go trade shopping in an effort to build around Mitchell. Or, if they really want to tear the sucker down, they can push the big red button with Mitchell too. We know teams like Miami would be interested in that.
For the Wolves, this represents their first player swing of the offseason. They made waves earlier in the offseason cycle, hiring Tim Connelly away from the Denver Nuggets for a hefty bag&nbsp;and&nbsp;equity. Adding Gobert to the roster comes with the forfeiture of draft control for the forseeable future, but it's a trade-off the Wolves were willing to make for one of the NBA's best centers &mdash; and to acquire him without giving up any of their core pieces aside from Vanderbilt.
WHAT HE BRINGS
It starts on the non-glamour end of the floor.&nbsp;
To be frank, there isn't an interior defender in the league like Rudy Gobert. He's a three-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, and he put together a campaign worthy of consideration for a fourth award last season. The blocks are nice; he's averaged at least 2.0 blocks per game in every season of his career aside from his rookie campaign. He's able to swat shots without getting himself into foul trouble; including the playoffs, Gobert has fouled out just four times in the last three seasons.
Beyond the blocks and strong contests, Gobert's presence alone shifts an opponent's shot profile. Per Cleaning The Glass, enemy offenses have seen their rim frequency drop by at least five percentage points with Gobert on the floor in five of the last six seasons. It's been especially absurd over the last two seasons: a 7.6% dip in 2021, and a 7.8% dip last season.
In other words: teams are typically afraid of challenging Gobert in the paint.
(Anthony Edwards looms as a pretty loud example, as he claimed Gobert doesn't put fear in his heart last season. Now, he doesn't have to! They're teammates!)
Gobert's ability to protect the paint should make life easier on everyone else. If the Wolves continue to dial it up with Karl-Anthony Towns showing high in ball screens, they'll have Gobert behind the action to clean things up. Vanderbilt was a borderline All-Defensive team candidate in my eyes, in part because of his work as a weakside rim protector. Swapping him out for Gobert is quite the enhancement.&nbsp;
On the other end, Gobert is a prolific screener and lob threat. Only Nikola Vucevic set more on-ball screens (3,429) than Gobert did last season (3,165), and his partnership with Mike Conley was one of the NBA's best, per Second Spectrum.
D'Angelo Russell, provided <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/examining-potential-trade-destinations-for-dangelo-russell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he isn't moved</a>, could create a similar partnership. Remember, he hasn't played with a roller like this since his time with Jarrett Allen. Edwards simply hasn't had this kind of target. Spread pick-and-rolls with Gobert as the screener and Towns spaced at the wing should put defenses in a bind.
When he isn't directly involved in action, Gobert doesn't just bide his time. He's a willing pin-in screener off the ball, effective for occupying help defenders and giving his ball-handler an extra kick-out option when necessary. If nothing else, Gobert will make himself available at the dunker spot for dump-offs.&nbsp;
The Jazz averaged a little over one point per possession when running a ball screen while having a player occupy the dunker spot, a top-three mark in the NBA, per Second Spectrum. The Wolves were in the middle of the pack (0.94 PPP, 16th). Swapping out Vanderbilt for Gobert could provide a bump in that area &mdash; if not for the buckets, then for the foul drawing when rising up. How many non-Jazz fans knew that Gobert ranked just outside the top 10 in free throw attempts per game (6.7) last season?
Even zooming out from the particulars, having Gobert and Towns means having an elite big on the floor at all times with some staggering. They will have some sense of stability up front versus the variance of Naz Reid (still a fan!) trying to hold down the fort with Towns on the bench.

QUESTION MARKS
The big question surrounding this trade concerns the amount of picks that Minnesota sent to Utah, but we're going to keep this one on the basketball court.
Gobert still has to prove himself as a self-creator. He's seen his on-ball picks switched at a higher rate in each of the past three seasons: from 5.2 per 100 possessions in 2019-20, to 8.5 in 2020-21, to 8.7 last season, per Second Spectrum. A lot of that is due to the lack of respect Gobert garners as a post-up threat.
There's room for a "he-didn't-get-the-ball-enough-on-deep-seals" argument; but, as my <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-dunker-spot/id1547857052" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Dunker Spot</a> cohost Steve Jones Jr. has pointed out, Gobert doesn't always seal mismatches with oomph. He's shown that he can abuse smaller players on the glass, but he's gotta put the ball in the hoop.&nbsp;
Defensively, it's fair to question what it's going to look like in crunch time. While I'd respect Chris Finch for closing games with Kyle Anderson and Gobert up front for maximum aptitude, Towns is going to be on the floor. That could get a little dicey if teams decide to go small.
The hope is that the Towns-Gobert pairing becomes a juiced version of the Al Horford-Robert Williams III duo in Boston. But with all due respect, Towns isn't Horford as a switch defender &mdash; or an in-space defender at that.
And what helps that particular pairing work is the personnel around them. Marcus Smart and/or Derrick White at the point of attack; Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are stout on-ball defenders. We've seen what a guy like Grant Williams can do. Looking at what the Wolves have on the perimeter... it ain't that, either.
Vanderbilt and Beverley are gone. Jaden McDaniels has stud potential on the defensive end, but it's fair to question everyone else. Russell is a more reliable off-ball defender and half-court direction-giver than he is at the point of attack. There's a lot of variance to what Edwards provides on defense right now; he'll have to grow up fast, but it's encouraging that he seems to want to.
But even with those question marks, it's hard to argue against the Wolves making themselves a better team with this deal. Gobert is a defense unto himself, and his screening prowess should pry some things open on the other end.
There's plenty of time for the Wolves to make free-agent or trade moves to solidify the rotation. They'll need to in order to make this work.

"The Timberwolves will send Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, No. 22 pick Walker Kessler and four first-round picks to the Jazz, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34180894/sources-utah-jazz-trading-star-center-rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESPN</a>. This is an enormous haul from Minnesota, but Gobert is a four-time All-NBA selection, three-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year. This move gives the Wolves a generational defender to play alongside Karl-Anthony Towns in the frontcourt.
Last season, Minnesota was 46-36, finishing as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. Now, we'll see if they can make some more noise in the West given their new-look core.

With rumblings surrounding the availability of Atlanta Hawks big man John Collins, BasketballNews.com's Evan Sidery and Nekias Duncan teamed up to come up with possible destinations prior to the NBA's Feb. 10 trade deadline.
John Collins is growing increasingly frustrated with his role. Carrying his lowest usage rate since his rookie campaign in 2017-18, Collins feels <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/stats-notebook-has-john-collins-role-with-the-hawks-really-changed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he's more than deserving of being a more featured piece within the Hawks&rsquo; offense</a>. Even with Collins still only holding a 19.9 USG%, he&rsquo;s averaging an impressive stat line of 17.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 blocks at an above-average efficiency clip.
Collins is excellent at what he does for Atlanta, but would he look like in a different role elsewhere away from Trae Young?
He is only on the first year of his new deal, which drew lines in the sand during a tough restricted free agency period last offseason.
With extremely high expectations in Atlanta following its Eastern Conference Finals surprise, the team has been unable to clear the first bars. The Hawks already dealt promising young wing Cam Reddish to the New York Knicks in order to avoid paying him a big-figure contract. Meanwhile, if Collins is indeed available to the highest bidder around the Association, Atlanta could receive an extremely high amount of resources.
Below, Nekias and I dove into the film room, as well as five destinations that make the most sense for Collins in a trade scenario.
WHAT COLLINS BRINGS
Collins has become one of the NBA's most versatile pick-and-roll partners. Because of his speed, soft hands and impressive vertical pop, Collins is able to sky for just about anything you throw his way after he rolls to the basket. And because of his improved shooting ability &mdash; he's converted north of 40% of his above-the-break threes in each of the past three seasons &mdash; you can't afford to completely sell out against rim attempts.
It's that combination of skills that makes him deadly. Pairing that with Young &mdash; a guy that can pull from 30, make every pass in the book, and #FloaterGang you to death &mdash; is patently unfair. It's unsurprising that trips featuring a Young-Collins ball screen has generated over 1.05 points per possessions over the last three seasons, per Second Spectrum.

Collins' quick-leaping ability also makes him a menace on the offensive glass when he's allowed to hover around the paint. The gradual decline in offensive rebounding has more to do with his positioning within the offense than some lack of instinct or physicality.
LIMITATIONS&nbsp;
There are some questions defensively.
There are fewer questions to answer than in years past, to be fair. Collins' activity level and awareness have improved throughout his career. You could especially sense a shift from him during last year's playoffs, and that has seemingly carried over into this year.&nbsp;
Collins looks a little more comfortable on the perimeter, holding his own in switches and in the rare times the Hawks have asked him to trap this year. He has the feel needed to clean up messes as a weak-side helper, especially if he's allowed to roam against a non-shooter.
It's still largely unclear if Collins has made enough strides to serve as a primary rim-protector for extended periods of time. Among 75 frontcourt players that have defended at least 150 picks in drop coverage this season, Collins ranks in the bottom five in points allowed per Second Spectrum.
The added activity is nice, but he's still suffering from the too-little-too-much problem. Sometimes he's giving up too much of a gap, which allows the ball-handler or roll man (if he receives a pass early enough) to build momentum and launch into Collins' chest. Other times, he's playing the gap a little too high, which allows the big to get behind him for easy lobs.

It's fair to question how much of that is Collins trying to figure things out, and how much of it is him not trusting the point-of-attack defenders he's had to play with over the past couple of seasons. Let's be kind and say Young and Lou Williams leave quite a bit to be desired.
The boring answer: Collins has clear strengths and weaknesses, and a stronger defensive infrastructure could bring the best out of him.
Sacramento Kings
Rumors <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/kings-making-buddy-hield-richaun-holmes-harrison-barnes-available" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continue to billow out of Sacramento</a> right now pointing towards a massive roster overhaul soon in store. Everyone on the Kings, except reportedly De&rsquo;Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton, is available in trade talks. It shows the urgency is rising in Sacramento, and someone like Collins could be the perfect remedy.
Kings receive: John Collins
Hawks receive: Harrison Barnes, Davion Mitchell
This feels like a very fair trade for both sides, especially if Collins malcontents his way out of Atlanta. Barnes would provide beautiful floor-spacing acumen for the Hawks&rsquo; guards, plus Mitchell would be a bulldog defender who'd had heavy spot minutes alongside Young.
For Sacramento, it&rsquo;s easy to sell yourself on the idea of switching things up and inserting a potential 20-and-10 machine in Collins. Haliburton would be spoon-feeding easy looks for Collins, plus Fox provides a steady scoring partner as well.
Resetting around a trio of Fox, Collins and Haliburton in Sacramento could actually be a fun scenario to watch unfold. And from Atlanta&rsquo;s standpoint, this feels like a win-win deal in the short and long-term.
Charlotte Hornets
An intra-division trade, huh? With the way the Hornets have played lately, showcasing a complete turnaround on the defensive end, could they be positioning themselves to make a big push at February&rsquo;s trade deadline. Don&rsquo;t rule it out, because Charlotte&rsquo;s upside is already massive with a young superstar like LaMelo Ball running the show offensively.
Nabbing Collins from Atlanta would cost significant assets, but the payoff could be absolutely massive. Could you imagine Collins and Miles Bridges catching lobs from Ball with reckless abandon?
Hornets receive: John Collins
Hawks receive: Kelly Oubre Jr., P.J. Washington, James Bouknight

For Atlanta, Oubre would fill a similar energizer role as Collins, but with much less consistency and pop. Oubre has flashed at times brilliance this season we saw from him during his years with the Phoenix Suns; could that jump be intensified playing with Young as his point guard?
Washington and Bouknight are two former lottery picks for the Hornets who simply haven&rsquo;t been able to carve out a consistent role. If Charlotte decides the time is now, relinquishing these two enticing prospects likely is the going rate to seriously upgrade. Bouknight would provide a promising young building block who could turn into a 20-plus point-per-game scorer. Washington has the makeup similar to Collins where he can feast around the rim and pick-and-pops in Atlanta&rsquo;s scheme.
I would grade this one as doubtful on the potential scale of realism, but the construct of this certainly makes plenty of sense on paper.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves are so much fun to watch when they&rsquo;re clicking on all cylinders. Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns have been the dynamite scoring duo Minnesota had hoped for. D&rsquo;Angelo Russell is also finding his footing with the Timberwolves, showcasing a strong ability to bounce-back and fit within what&rsquo;s required of him.
It&rsquo;s long been known the Timberwolves have really been one more piece away from taking another serious jump in the Western Conference hierarchy. That&rsquo;s why Ben Simmons has been floated around Minnesota for months now.
What about Collins landing in Minnesota to play alongside Towns, Edwards and Russell? It wouldn&rsquo;t provide the defensive security blanket Minnesota is in desperate need of, but he makes an already scary offense absolutely terrifying.
Timberwolves receive: John Collins
Hawks receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, Malik Beasley, draft compensation
The Hawks check plenty of boxes in this scenario where they send Collins off to Minnesota, bringing back an immediate impact scorer in Beasley, a super versatile rebounder with flashes of elite defense in Vanderbilt; plus, they would get a potentially beautiful backcourt fit with Bolmaro as a jumbo-sized playmaker. Throwing in some picks to the equation makes this so enticing for Atlanta as well.
This would be one to watch out for as a real fit for Collins, if it reaches that point in Atlanta anytime soon.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland is in an odd spot right now. Damian Lillard is out indefinitely due to an abdomen injury that has plagued him for a while. With the Trail Blazers far out of competing for a serious playoff push, especially with no Lillard, now is the perfect time to reset a little bit and try something different.
The pressure is on for the Blazers to find another competent scoring punch to keep Lillard happy in Oregon long-term. Could Collins be the answer here? It&rsquo;s a very intriguing fit for both player and team.

I have to admit, Collins teaming up with Lillard would be so much fun for everyone to watch. Instantly, Collins would provide an inside scoring jolt that&rsquo;s been missing for the Blazers. Also, Collins would be feasting consistently playing off the gravity of Lillard and CJ McCollum.
For the Hawks, they would receive three pieces to insert into their frontcourt to replace Collins&rsquo; production. Nance would be a strong bounce-back candidate playing with Young as his point guard in Atlanta. Covington isn&rsquo;t who he used to be, but can still provide winning attributes on a hopeful contender. Little is the wildcard who provides real intrigue here. Beginning to flash more consistently this season, could Little&rsquo;s rise become a full-on ascension with the Hawks?
Another scenario where this feels like a win-win for both sides. Maybe Portland throws on some draft compensation to make the return more eye-opening for Atlanta.
San Antonio Spurs
The dots have already been connected around Collins to San Antonio. As Collins entered restricted free agency, the Spurs were the one team we continuously heard as a team who was seriously interested in pursuing him for a lucrative offer sheet.
San Antonio&rsquo;s core has been overachieving a little bit this season, thanks in large part to Dejounte Murray becoming a key building block. It&rsquo;s really almost a blank slate for the Spurs, so maybe Collins could be the piece to really augment another era of strong basketball in San Antonio?

White has been thrown around in trade rumors throughout his career, but his fit next to Young is nothing short of excellent. White&rsquo;s all-around ability would cover up a lot of holes and help strengthen Atlanta&rsquo;s backcourt depth. Walker is a home-run swing, but an athlete like that to catch lobs every game from Young could lead to some magic happening.
San Antonio has been floating around as a potential shocking buyer at the trade deadline, including its name being thrown into the Simmons sweepstakes. Collins would boost up a Spurs core in desperate need of another strong piece.
Collins would cause a feeding frenzy in the NBA, if the Hawks are indeed shopping him around to the highest bidder anywhere. The Hawks&rsquo; big man has displayed he&rsquo;s deserving of a bigger role. Whether it&rsquo;s in Atlanta or elsewhere, Collins would change the dynamics of a lot of organizations.
