It has become an annual joke, one that NBA players keep repeating.
For the sixth consecutive year, players had the right to have a significant say in the process of deciding who will start the All-Star Game. The NBA uses a formula to do that now, with fan voting counting for 50% of the total, a media panel counting for 25% and the players themselves getting 25%.
And, also for the sixth consecutive year, most players didn&rsquo;t take the process seriously.
There&rsquo;s no other way to explain how 297 players had at least one of their peers &mdash; or themselves &mdash; saying that they should start next month&rsquo;s All-Star Game in Cleveland. Ben Simmons got two votes; he has not played this season because he doesn&rsquo;t want to play for Philadelphia. Kawhi Leonard got two votes; he has not played this season because of injury. John Wall, T.J. Warren, Luka Samanic and Michael Carter-Williams all got votes; they, too, have not played this season.
The NBA got votes back from 323 players in this year&rsquo;s voting. Only four players appeared on more than half of those ballots. Kevin Durant was on 64.1% of them, Giannis Antetokounmpo on 56.7%, LeBron James on 52.9% and Nikola Jokic on 51.7%.
Imagine this: More than half of the players in the NBA didn&rsquo;t think that Joel Embiid &mdash; who likely would win the MVP award going away if the vote was held today &mdash; shouldn&rsquo;t be an All-Star starter.
Make it make sense.
The NBA changed the rules six years ago for 768,112 reasons. That was the number of fan votes that Zaza Pachulia received in 2016, nearly enough to make him an All-Star starter that season. His candidacy was fueled by social-media influencers and many votes from the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
Hence, the league went to the weighted formula. And players have turned it into a mockery.
In 2017, there were 283 players who got at least one All-Star starters vote from a peer or themselves. In 2018, the number was 249. In 2019, it was 289. In 2020, it went up to 292. In 2021, up again to 310.
At least this season the number went down, albeit slightly.
But it&rsquo;d be great to hear the arguments from players about why Kyrie Irving, who has played in seven games this season because of his vaccination status, got more votes from players (25) than someone like Miami&rsquo;s Jimmy Butler (23), who has helped the Heat move into first place in the Eastern Conference.
Or why someone thought Zylan Cheatham and Jay Huff should start the All-Star Game. By all accounts, they are excellent teammates. But they have combined for five NBA appearances and zero NBA points this season. Each got one vote anyway.
Moses Wright played in one game, logging 88 scoreless seconds, for the Clippers. He got two starter votes. So did McKinley Wright IV, his five points in three games for Minnesota earning him the two votes. Joel Ayayi scored two points in seven games with Washington; he got a vote. George King got a vote, which is one vote for every point he&rsquo;s scored for Dallas this season.
Many of the players who got one or two votes were hardship signings who, quite frankly, deserve enormous credit for keeping the league afloat this season when rosters were getting decimated by positive COVID-19 tests.
But most of the player votes didn&rsquo;t seem to be sentimental or look like praise for those who were brought in on those 10-day deals. They apparently were either meant to be funny, or to make fun of the process, or both.
Luckily, fans are pretty much getting what they wanted, which should be all that matters since the game is about them. The nine players who got the most fan votes were all picked as starters &mdash; James, Stephen Curry, Durant, Antetokounmpo, Jokic, DeMar DeRozan, Embiid, Ja Morant and Andrew Wiggins. The only starter who wasn&rsquo;t in the top 10 of fan voting was Trae Young; he was 11th among fans, one spot behind Paul George.
And, once again, the player voting silliness doesn&rsquo;t appear to have cost anyone a well-deserved starting nod.
But there will be a day when that happens, and that&rsquo;ll be an embarrassing day for the NBA.

Analysis: NBA All-Star voting by players, again, was flawed

Joel Embiid had 36 points and 13 rebounds and a spat with Montrezl Harrell, Tobias Harris added 23 points and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Washington Wizards 117-96 on Sunday night.
Philadelphia improved to 17-16 after dropping four of its last five.
Spencer Dinwiddie led Washington with 17 points. The Wizards also are 17-16.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Tyrese Maxey, Seth Curry and Embiid keyed a 15-0 run that put the 76ers ahead 80-59 with 5:22 to play in the third quarter.
With 3:04 left in the third, Harrell fouled Embiid, and the two exchanged words. Both were assessed technical fouls, and Embiid made the two free throws.
&ldquo;He flopped,&rdquo; Embiid said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think he made a play on the ball, and we got tangled.&rdquo;
Thirty seconds later, Harrell pushed Embiid, yelled at him, and was given his second technical and ejected. Harrell, who didn&rsquo;t immediately leave the court was finally escorted the floor, and left shaking his head while Embiid waved him goodbye.
&ldquo;I wouldn&rsquo;t say I baited him into that,&rdquo; Embiid said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think I&rsquo;m a troll.&rdquo;
Harrell was visibly annoyed after the game.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know, you&rsquo;ve got to ask the ref, man,&rdquo; Harrell said. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t feel I did anything wrong. It&rsquo;s as simple as that.&rdquo;
Washington scoring leader Bradley Beal sat out his second game while in the NBA&rsquo;s health and safety protocols.

Embiid wasn&rsquo;t apologizing, either.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m glad I got to him,&rdquo; Embiid said.

Philadelphia coach Doc Rivers said that players who join teams and can acclimate quickly are invaluable.
&ldquo;That&rsquo;s sports right now,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Be prepared. Be ready.
&ldquo;I always think it&rsquo;s the other guys, the guys who are there who aren&rsquo;t sick, who can play, the more prepared they are, the easier they make it for the newcomers.&rdquo;

Before the 2021 NBA Draft and the start of free agency, we assessed the <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/facing-a-somewhat-challenging-offseason-the-los-angeles-lakers-have-decisions-to-make" target="_blank" rel="noopener">key personnel decisions that the Los Angeles Lakers would have to make this offseason</a>.&nbsp;Here is a section from that article:
&ldquo;While the Lakers can never be counted out as candidates to trade for a superstar, the likelihood is that L.A. will not be able to swing a deal for someone like Damian Lillard this offseason. The Lakers do not have a core of young players to throw in a trade or a stash of draft picks to barter with.
"With little cap flexibility, the simplest path toward filling out the roster this offseason is through re-signing the free agents from last season&rsquo;s squad. While that will not make for the most exciting offseason in Lakers&rsquo; history, it would ensure the Lakers have a baseline of talent to put around LeBron James and Anthony Davis."
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka took a bolder approach this offseason, opting to trade several players in exchange for guard Russell Westbrook, moving on from several players from last season&rsquo;s roster, re-signing Talen Horton-Tucker and filling out the depth chart with a mix of experienced veterans and younger players with upside. With the recent Marc Gasol trade, the only returning players from last year&rsquo;s roster are LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Horton-Tucker.&nbsp;
The current roster now includes James, Davis, Westbrook, Horton-Tucker, Rajon Rondo, Dwight Howard, Kent Bazemore, Carmelo Anthony, DeAndre Jordan, Malik Monk, Kendrick Nunn, Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, as well as Joel Ayayi and Austin Reaves (on two-way contracts).&nbsp;
The Lakers now feature a star-studded roster, but the main concern will be the overall age of the team. L.A. now has nine players over the age of 32 and four of the top-five active leaders in overall career games played (James, Howard, Ariza and Anthony). The main questions with this roster are:&nbsp;

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Will the age/injuries limit L.A. in the postseason?</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">How will Westbrook share playmaking duties with LeBron?</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Will the Lakers drop off from last season's league-leading defense?</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Do the Lakers have enough three-point shooting?</li>
</ol>
Last season, James missed 27 games and Davis missed 26 due to injury, and both were limited in the postseason. If both superstars are once again battling injuries in the postseason, the Lakers will suffer a similar fate as last season. However, assuming James and Davis are relatively healthy, the question is: how will the remainder of the Lakers' roster hold up? Is there enough depth to get through the grueling 82-game regular season without suffering too many setbacks?
With some luck and strategic maintenance throughout the regular season, the answer should be yes. While the roster is quite old collectively, their key rotation players did not miss too much time <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last season</a> due to injuries.

Out of these key rotation players, only three had more than 10 injury-related missed games last season. Of course, some players did not play heavy minutes at different times throughout the season, but based on this data, it&rsquo;s reasonable to believe that the Lakers can get through the upcoming season without losing a disproportionate number of players. Injuries are unavoidable and COVID-19 will likely play a factor in terms of players missing games, but with some strategic load management throughout the season, it appears the Lakers have the depth and personnel to persevere.&nbsp;
In terms of sharing playmaking duties, it&rsquo;s unclear how James and Westbrook are going to mesh. Westbrook is saying the right things so far:&nbsp;
&ldquo;My job is to make sure that I&rsquo;m able to make his game easy for him. I&rsquo;ll find ways to do that throughout the game,&rdquo; Westbrook said at his first press conference as a Laker. &ldquo;As it pertains to ball-handling and all that, it really doesn&rsquo;t matter. There&rsquo;s many different ways you can impact the game without having the ball in your hands. And I&rsquo;ve been able to do that for many years and I will figure it out.&rdquo;
Westbrook has played with dynamic scorers and ball-handlers in the past, including Kevin Durant, James Harden (twice) and Bradley Beal. Westbrook&rsquo;s heavy usage rate, aggressive style of play and inefficiency as a three-point shooter have caused chemistry issues with past teammates, but LeBron is now 36 years old and coming off a rare injury-plagued season.
Perhaps LeBron will look to take a step back from his usual playmaking duties in the regular season and allow Westbrook to take on that volume in his place. Or, perhaps Westbrook will defer to James and Davis, being more selective with his opportunities and acting at the team&rsquo;s primary playmaker. Considering LeBron&rsquo;s age and the injuries he suffered last season as well as Westbrook&rsquo;s desire to win his first championship, there is plenty of reason to believe these two players will find a workable balance in terms of running the Lakers&rsquo; offense.
Perhaps the biggest question people have not focused on enough is the possible drop-off on the defensive end. The Lakers had the best defense in the league last season, but that was with a younger roster that featured several two-way wing defenders. Missing from last season&rsquo;s squad are Alex Caruso, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Wesley Matthews, Markieff Morris and Marc Gasol.&nbsp;
While none of these players are individually elite defenders at their respective positions, they meshed well enough to cover each other&rsquo;s shortcomings and create a solid, consistent defense. Caruso was a particularly effective wing defender, and Gasol was still an effective anchor when he got minutes. The Lakers added some players who can certainly step in and try to fill the void left behind, but players like Ariza, Rondo, Ellington, Jordan and Carmelo are well past their athletic primes. Younger players like Monk, Nunn, Horton-Tucker and even Bazemore have the mobility to stay in front of wings and should each be in the rotation to a certain extent.
Westbrook also has the athletic ability to be a tough defender, but his focus and effort on that end of the court have been inconsistent for several seasons. The Lakers are going to need Davis to be a defensive anchor in the middle. Last season, AD averaged career-lows in blocks per game (1.6, down from 2.3 the year before), block percentage (4.5%), total rebound percentage (13.8%), defensive win shares (2.4) and value over replacement player (1.9). In addition to getting more out of Davis, L.A. hopes that Howard can provide the same defensive impact as he did during his last stint with the team in 2019-20.
Head coach Frank Vogel has the difficult task of implementing a defensive system with a rebuilt roster that features several players in the twilight of their respective careers. Expect at least a slight drop-off from last season&rsquo;s top-ranked defense.
Three-point shooting was an area of concern entering the offseason, but the Lakers added a couple of players who should provide spacing for Westbrook, James and Davis to operate. Ellington shot a scorching 42.2% from distance last season on six attempts per game. Anthony shot 40.9% on 4.7 attempts, a nice bump in efficiency over the last six seasons, and his shooting could be a big catalyst for the Lakers&rsquo; offense. Monk is coming off his best season from beyond the arc, as he shot 40.1% from distance on five attempts per game. Nunn also had a particularly good season shooting the ball, hitting 38.1% of his 5.7 attempts per game. Bazemore and Ariza showed efficiency from distance last season, though Horton-Tucker continues to struggle from beyond the arc.
In short, the Lakers added enough shooters to this roster to ensure that spacing shouldn't be a major issue unless several players regress this upcoming season, or if defenses force Westbrook into taking a heavy dose of three-point attempts each night.&nbsp;
The Lakers entered the offseason with seemingly little flexibility to reshape and improve their roster. Despite the odds, Pelinka managed to add another star player and round out the roster with proven veterans who can still contribute at a high level. Injuries and age are a concern, but that is true for several teams in contention. The Lakers enter this season with plenty of star talent, a ton of experience and championship-or-bust expectations as they look to add banner No. 18 to the rafters of Staples Center.

The 2021 NBA Draft will take place on Thursday, July 29 at 8 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.&nbsp;&nbsp;ABC&nbsp;will televise the&nbsp;first round of the NBA Draft&nbsp;for the first time, and ESPN will air both rounds.&nbsp;

He has the ability to impact both ends of the floor, making him a viable option in the first round for teams that want a 3-and-D type of player.

Don&rsquo;t be surprised if Duarte provides a spark to an NBA team as early as next season.

His ability to play point guard regularly is highly questionable, but he is an effective passer. Springer&rsquo;s ceiling might not be quite as high as some of the other one-and-done prospects this year; however, his floor is high, making him a safe bet.

He excels attacking in transition and when he gets downhill, he is a powerful athlete who is capable of finishing plays with craft and touch. He needs to become more focused on defense and improve as a decision-maker, especially in regard to his shot selection. But he is one of those guys where if it clicks, watch out.

He progressed well during his freshman season at Alabama, averaging 9.0 points per game while shooting 41.4% from three and 89.3% from the free-throw line in conference play. With good positional size, Primo will need to continue to build on his basketball IQ and versatility as he moves on to the next level, but he shouldn't be on the board too long as his upside is undeniable.

But at 6-foot-7, Boston&rsquo;s combination of length, shot-making, and ball-handling give him the potential to be an effective scorer in the NBA. Despite some of the public concerns, don&rsquo;t expect Boston to slip too far in the draft.

Dosunmu's competitive nature makes him a viable option for teams looking for depth at guard.

He struggled with inconsistency at times, but the sharpshooting makes him a viable option in this month's Draft.&nbsp;

Ayayi shot 38.9% from deep this season on the way to 12.0 points per contest, and regularly added great reads off the dribble as a facilitator, playmaking, and disciplined defense on the other end. With his positional size and intelligence, he has a great chance to carve out a role in the NBA.

As Gonzaga, Baylor, Houston, and UCLA prepare for April 3 in Lucas Oil Stadium, we&rsquo;re excited to get a prime-time look at some of the 2021 NBA Draft&rsquo;s premier prospects. I previously covered prospects who <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/ncaa-tournament-march-madness-first-weekend-stock-risers-nba-draft-prospects-2021">raised their stock after the Round of 64 and 32</a>, but here&rsquo;s who to keep an eye on next week.
Jalen Suggs - Gonzaga | 6&rsquo;4, 205 pounds | Guard | Freshman
Suggs has been as advertised as a freshman, and is widely projected as a top-5 pick. He is highly intelligent, a versatile scorer, and his football background shines through on the defensive end with his incredible instincts. Suggs has the making of a potential franchise player at the NBA level. Averaging 12.5 points and 4.7 assists in the NCAA Tournament, he&rsquo;ll look to solidify his Gonzaga legacy with a run to the championship next week.

Corey Kispert - Gonzaga | 6&rsquo;7, 220 pounds | Guard/Wing | Senior
Kispert tested the NBA Draft waters in 2020, but ultimately returned to Gonzaga for his senior year. The decision has worked out well for him, not only because he has a shot to play for a National Championship, but because he&rsquo;s now regarded as one of the most NBA-ready prospects in this class. Kispert is a sharpshooter in every sense of the word, and has proven to be a disciplined, reliable decision-maker on both ends. He&rsquo;ll play a vital role for the Bulldogs against UCLA, and will look to push his stock even higher.&nbsp;
Davion Mitchell - Baylor | 6&rsquo;2, 205 pounds | Guard | Junior
After one season at Auburn, Mitchell transferred to Baylor, and as a junior has solidified himself as one of the best guards in the nation. His burst makes him a nightmare to stay in front of with the ball in his hand; this season, he averaged 14.1 points and 5.3 assists, while also shooting 45% from three on 4.7 attempts per game. Mitchell is a physical and tenacious on-ball defender, and has the potential to make an impact on both ends at the next level. Don&rsquo;t be surprised if Mitchell flies up Draft boards during the pre-draft process.

Jared Butler - Baylor | 6&rsquo;3, 195 pounds | Guard | Junior
Butler is one of the best shooters in the country both off the dribble and the catch. As of today, he&rsquo;s hitting 40.4% of his threes on 6.1 attempts per contest. He&rsquo;ll need to shoot well for the Bears to defeat Houston, who are ranked No. 7 in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. He&rsquo;s a terrific playmaker and crafty around the rim, and due to his potential to provide reliable point guard minutes at the next level, he is expected to declare for the 2021 NBA Draft following March Madness.
Quentin Grimes - Houston | 6&rsquo;5, 205 pounds | Guard | Junior
The former McDonald&rsquo;s All-American spent his freshman year at Kansas, transferred to Houston in 2019, and has since come into his own. Shooting 41.2% from deep, he has a quick release and wastes little movement in his mechanics, providing promise to becoming a big-time shotmaker at the NBA level. With his next make from behind the arc, he&rsquo;ll eclipse 100 made threes on the season. He&rsquo;s averaging 18 points per game in the Tournament, and will face a tough test in the Baylor defense next week.

Joel Ayayi - Gonzaga | 6&rsquo;5, 180 pounds | Guard | Junior
Due to the Gonzaga roster being loaded with future pros, Ayayi remains one of the most underappreciated players in the country. Thanks to his playmaking ability and shooting, he averaged 11.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists this season. Now a junior, Ayayi will have a big decision to make on entering the 2021 Draft, so he&rsquo;ll be one to track as he gathers feedback from NBA teams.&nbsp;
Drew Timme - Gonzaga | 6&rsquo;10, 235 pounds | Center | Sophomore
One of the most skilled big men in the country, Timme posted 23 points in Gonzaga&rsquo;s rout of USC in the Elite Eight. He seemingly got any shot he wanted around the rim, which is right in line with his 19 points-per-game average this season. With the value of the center position fluctuating in today&rsquo;s NBA, his skillset, footwork, and ability to score could help him land an opportunity. Many know him for the mustache, but he&rsquo;s got the game to go with it.&nbsp;

7 NBA Draft prospects to watch in the Final Four

With all due respect to the teams of the Big Ten, Gonzaga and Baylor have been the two best teams in college basketball all season. The two have combined for just one loss, and that was by Baylor soon after returning from a three-week shutdown. Of course, only one of them can win the national championship. If you were planning on placing a bet on one of the heavy favorites, should you choose Gonzaga or Baylor?
The Case for Gonzaga
The Bulldogs know how to score, averaging 92.1 points per game and finishing third nationally with over 18 assists per game. The thing that stands out about Gonzaga is that point guard Jalen Suggs is the team&rsquo;s best player and a potential top-five NBA draft pick, yet he&rsquo;s only the third-leading scorer on the team. Both Corey Kispert and Drew Timme average over 18 points per game. Meanwhile, Suggs, Joel Ayayi, and Andrew Nembhard form a terrific backcourt that can score in a variety of ways, forcing teams to match such a potent offense for 40 minutes if they hope to beat Gonzaga.
The Case Against Gonzaga
Of course, the case against Gonzaga every year is that they don&rsquo;t play a difficult schedule in the West Coast Conference. Despite non-conference wins over Kansas, West Virginia, Iowa, and Virginia, the Bulldogs haven&rsquo;t been challenged by anyone outside of BYU since January. Also, defense could be a concern against high-level competition, as Kansas, West Virginia, and Iowa all scored over 80 points against the Bulldogs early in the season. Can the Bulldogs get the stops they need against a good offensive team in a close game?

The Case for Baylor
Much like Gonzaga, the Bears force teams to get into a track meet. Baylor averaged 84.4 points per game thanks to a deep and talented backcourt. Both Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell are skilled ball handlers who can shoot the ball, get to the basket, and create opportunities for other players, as both averaged over five assists per game this season. The Bears also shoot 41.8% from the perimeter as a team thanks to four players in their rotation who shoot better than 40% from three-point range.
The Case Against Baylor
If Baylor has a weakness, it might be size. There are only three players in their rotation who are taller than 6-foot-4. The team&rsquo;s best two frontcourt players, Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua and Flo Thamba, don&rsquo;t provide a lot of scoring and need to stay out of foul trouble. The Bears also rely on their guards to help with rebounding. Baylor didn&rsquo;t face a lot of elite frontcourts in the Big 12 this season. But it&rsquo;s worth noting they were out-rebounded by 20 in their loss to Kansas. Could a team with size bully the Bears in the paint enough to pull off an upset?&nbsp;

The Best Bet for the Big Dance
All things considered, Baylor is the slightly better bet to win the national championship. The fact that Mark Few has been building toward a national championship for 20 years is irrelevant. March is all about guard play, and the Bears have that in a greater abundance than Gonzaga. Plus, Baylor is battle-tested, escaping with just one loss in a conference that has six other top-25 teams. The Bears will be ready for anything the NCAA Tournament throws at them, and will be more apt to survive and advance than Gonzaga.
