Giannis Antetokounmpo set a career high <a href="https://apnews.com/article/milwaukee-bucks-philadelphia-76ers-washington-wizards-indiana-pacers-sports-82805995222618cd69855bdb39934d90">with 55 points</a> last Tuesday in Milwaukee's victory over Washington &mdash; and it wasn't even the week's top scoring performance in the NBA's Central Division.
That belonged to Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell, with <a href="https://apnews.com/article/kobe-bryant-chicago-bulls-cleveland-cavaliers-sports-nba-basketball-4000f884c911930cd172baa93ca42650">a staggering 71</a> the previous night.
The NBA these past few weeks has featured an almost nightly display of one-upmanship among the game's greatest scorers. Whether it was <a href="https://apnews.com/ef2ccddb44dd42fa14ebed5f8344c5a2">Mitchell's extraordinary effort</a> for the Cavaliers or Dallas' Luka Doncic reaching 50 points three times in a nine-day span, everywhere you turn, it seems like another player is putting up a huge total.
&ldquo;I think there are a lot of layers to it. You just see night after night, guys are having enormous offensive games,&rdquo; Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s fun to watch as a fan, of course. Frustrating when you&rsquo;re trying to game plan to stop some of these guys because they&rsquo;re scoring at all levels &mdash; the paint, the 3s, getting to the line.&rdquo;
Ten different players have already scored 50 points in a game this season: Antetokounmpo, Mitchell, Doncic, Joel Embiid, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Pascal Siakam, Darius Garland and Stephen Curry.
Before 2016-17, no more than eight different players had ever had a 50-point game in one season, according to Sportradar. Since then, at least 10 have done it every season, including a record 14 in 2021-22. Some of this is to be expected in what has become a very high-scoring era. NBA teams were averaging 113.8 points per game entering Monday night, which if it continues would be the highest mark for the league since 1969-70. But the overall scoring environment tells only part of the story.
In that 1969-70 season, teams averaged 116.7 points, but only two players had a 50-point game. In 1984-85, the highest-scoring season of the 1980s, teams averaged 110.8 points. But only five players &mdash; Bernard King, Larry Bird, Purvis Short, Kevin McHale and Moses Malone &mdash; produced a 50-point game that season.
So what's happening lately is not just higher scoring league-wide. The top players are also producing huge games with remarkable frequency. Expansion may play a role. The number of teams is 30% higher than it was in 1985. More teams means more games, so it makes sense that there are more examples of a player scoring 50.
But the sport has changed in other ways, too.
&ldquo;Guys come into this league, and the most impressive thing is the skill set &mdash; the handle and the shooting," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. "What&rsquo;s lacking, I think, is the foundation, the institutional knowledge that players used to have when they came into the league after a few years of college. Sometimes the defense isn&rsquo;t great. Transition defense is at an all-time low in this league.&rdquo;
Nowadays, basically every top scorer has some degree of proficiency from 3-point range, whereas back in the '80s, some stars largely ignored the shot and nobody attempted all that many.
&ldquo;Guys are taking 15 or 16 3s in some games,&rdquo; Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. "Teams are encouraging guys to take those shots, and if you take so many shots, and if you get hot and make some, you can score a lot of points.&rdquo;
So current players have a variety of ways they can accumulate points in a hurry, and the 3-point shot affects the game even beyond that. With so many players capable of making open 3s, teams can space the floor in a way that punishes defenses for double teams.
&ldquo;You have to pick and choose the guys you try and double team and get the ball out of their hands because they are not great passers, but there are some guys who can score, but can also pick you apart with their passing,&rdquo; Lue said. &ldquo;So, when you have guys like that, you want to let those guys try and get theirs and take everyone else out, but sometimes it can backfire on you as well.&rdquo;
When King scored 60 points on Christmas in 1984, he didn't attempt a single 3. Even this year, Antetokounmpo didn't make any when he scored 55. But Mitchell attempted 15 and made seven in his 71-point game.
&ldquo;I think that 3-point line, as we&rsquo;ve seen over the years, has definitely changed the game,&rdquo; Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said. &ldquo;Now you&rsquo;re getting more guys to embrace that. The volume of attempts creates those opportunities. It&rsquo;s pretty rare that guys are shooting 2 repeatedly to get to that 50-point mark. It&rsquo;s definitely the evolution of our game to see more of that. I would expect that trend to continue.&rdquo;

Three-point shooting leads to more NBA scoring binges

CHICAGO (AP) &mdash; DeMar DeRozan scored 28 points, Zach LaVine added 22 and the Chicago Bulls stopped Boston&rsquo;s nine-game win streak, beating the Celtics 121-107 on Monday night.
Patrick Williams scored a season-high 17, and the Bulls made it look rather easy against the team with the NBA&rsquo;s best record. They led by 13 at halftime, got it up to 21 in the third quarter and withstood a push to come away with the victory after dropping four straight and five of six.
Jayson Tatum led Boston with 28 points. Jaylen Brown scored 25 and Malcolm Brogdon finished with 23 points, shooting 5 of 6 on 3-pointers.
PELICANS 128, WARRIORS 83
NEW ORLEANS (AP) &mdash; Brandon Ingram scored a season-high 34 points on the night Zion Williamson returned from a three-game absence, and New Orleans routed depleted Golden State.
Playing one night after winning on the road for the first time this season at Houston, the Warriors scratched Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins from the lineup.
Williamson played 23 minutes in his first game back from a bruised right foot, scoring nine points.
Devonte Graham had 19 for the Pelicans, who took the lead for good less than two minutes into the game and led by as many as 45. Jonas Valanciunas had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Jordan Poole scored 26 for Golden State, which fell to 1-9 on the road.
BUCKS 119, TRAIL BLAZERS 111
MILWAUKEE (AP) &mdash; Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 37 points and Milwaukee pulled away in the second half to beat Portland.
Antetokounmpo shot 16 of 24 to go with seven rebounds and six assists in 35 minutes. Milwaukee improved to 12-4 overall and 9-1 at home.
Bucks guard Jrue Holiday scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, and Grayson Allen added 17 points and eight rebounds. Holiday had the first nine Milwaukee points in the period.
Anfernee Simons paced the Trail Blazers (10-7) with 29 points. Jusuf Nurkic added 16 points and 10 rebounds, but Portland lost its third straight game.
CLIPPERS 121, JAZZ 114
LOS ANGELES (AP) &mdash; Norman Powell scored a season-high 30 points, Reggie Jackson added a season-best 27 and Los Angeles rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Utah.
Ivica Zubac had 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Clippers extended their winning streak to three.
Los Angeles was without Paul George after he strained his right hamstring during Saturday&rsquo;s win over San Antonio.
Jordan Clarkson led Utah with 26 points and Lauri Markkanen had 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Jazz have dropped four of their last six after starting the season 10-3.
CAVALIERS 114, HAWKS 102
CLEVELAND (AP) &mdash; Donovan Mitchell had 29 points and nine assists, and Darius Garland scored 26 to send Cleveland past Atlanta in their first meeting since the play-in tournament last season.
Trae Young had 25 points and 10 assists, and Onyeka Okongwu had a season-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks. Key offseason acquisition Dejounte Murray scored 11 on 4-of-18 shooting.
Atlanta claimed the final playoff berth in the East with a 107-101 win at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on April 15, extending Cleveland&rsquo;s postseason drought to four years. The Cavaliers have not made the playoffs without LeBron James since 1998.
Garland also had nine assists and tied his career high with eight turnovers. Cedi Osman scored a season-best 23 off the bench as Cleveland won its third in a row following a five-game losing streak. The Cavaliers are 7-1 at home.
PACERS 123, MAGIC 102
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) &mdash; Bennedict Mathurin scored 22 points and Indiana blew out Orlando for its fifth consecutive victory.
Tyrese Haliburton had 18 points and 14 assists for the Pacers. T.J. McConnell added 19 points and 10 assists. Oshae Brissett scored 18 as Indiana's bench accounted for 71 points.
Franz Wagner led the Magic with 20 points and Gary Harris had 18.
TIMBERWOLVES 105, HEAT 101
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) &mdash; Karl-Anthony Towns had 25 points and Anthony Edwards scored 10 of his 22 in the third quarter as Minnesota outlasted shorthanded Miami.
Down to eight players due to injuries and rest on the second night of a back-to-back, the Heat led by 15 in the first half before Edwards sparked a third-quarter run.
Jaden McDaniels added 18 points for the Timberwolves, who won their fourth straight.
Kyle Lowry led the Heat with 21 points and Max Strus had 19. Bam Adebayo, playing in back-to-back games while dealing with a knee injury, had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Miami, which has lost four in a row.
Jimmy Butler missed his third straight game with a knee injury for the Heat, who were also without Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson and Gabe Vincent.
KNICKS 129, THUNDER 119
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) &mdash; Jalen Brunson had a season-high 34 points while RJ Barrett and Julius Randle scored 25 each to lead New York over Oklahoma City.
Just eight days ago, the Thunder beat the Knicks in Madison Square Garden, scoring 145 points &mdash; including 79 in the opening half. But this time, New York held Oklahoma City&rsquo;s offense in check for the bulk of the game.
Randle also pulled down 11 rebounds. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 30 points and Lu Dort added 24.

DeRozan helps Bulls halt Celtics' 9-game winning streak

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) &mdash; Anthony Davis scored 28 points in his return to the Lakers lineup after missing two games due to injury, and Los Angeles defeated Golden State 124-121 Sunday night in the Warriors' first game since the practice altercation between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole.
Matt Ryan made a pair of free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining to seal the win. Davis, who sat out two games with lower back tightness, shot 9 for 18 for the Lakers, who won without LeBron James, Patrick Beverley and Russell Westbrook in the lineup.
Davis, who scored 24 points before halftime, played the opening shift of the second half before taking a seat after 21 total minutes. Kendrick Nunn scored 21 points and Ryan added 20 on 6-for-9 shooting from outside the arc.
Poole led the Warriors with 25 points on 10-for-19 shooting, and added six assists. Green fought with Poole during practice Wednesday. Green apologized to the team a day later and general manager Bob Myers said any potential discipline would be handled internally. Meanwhile, Green was unavailable, saying he will take some time away from the team.
Stephen Curry scored 24 points and Andrew Wiggins added 15 for the Warriors. Jonathan Kuminga (12 points) started in Green&rsquo;s place, while Poole replaced Klay Thompson, who is still building up for the regular season.
In the first half, Davis performed at the level the Lakers will need him if they are to improve on last season&rsquo;s 33-49 regular-season record that left them out of the postseason. Davis shot 7 of 13 before the break, making all eight of his free throws.
The game became close in the second half, and neither team led by more than six points in the fourth quarter.
BULLS 115, RAPTORS 98
DeMar DeRozan had 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Chicago used a second-half rally to beat host Toronto.
DeRozan converted 7 of 12 shots and all seven of his free throws. Javonte Green scored 17 points and Ayo Dosunmu added 14. Nikola Vucevic finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Paschal Siakam led the Raptors with 18 points and nine rebounds. The starting Toronto backcourt of Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet carried the Raptors to a lead in the first half. Trent finished with 17 points and VanVleet had 13.
Both teams played their regular starters, except for missing Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, who is recovering from a meniscus tear suffered in January.
The Raptors built a 10-point halftime lead behind Trent and VanVleet. The tandem combined for 25 points before the break, including Trent connecting on all five of his shots. Defensively, they had six steals in the half, including four by VanVleet. The Bulls had 16 turnovers in the first half.
The Bulls erased the lead in the third and pulled away in the fourth. Chicago outscored Toronto 68-41 in the second half.
TIMBERWOLVES 119, CLIPPERS 117
Karl-Anthony Towns had 19 points, six assists and six rebounds in his preseason debut to lead visiting Minnesota.
Naz Reid had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves, while Bryn Forbes added 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting on 3-pointers. Anthony Edwards had 14 points.
John Wall led the Clippers with 20 points. Paul George scored 14 and Marcus Morris Sr. added 13 points.
The Clippers saw a vision of their regular rotation as Kawhi Leonard, George, Wall and Reggie Jackson all played. Meanwhile, Towns saw his first action of the preseason for the Timberwolves after missing games due to a hospitalization. Still, there was not a glimpse of the potential twin towers in Minnesota as Rudy Gobert, acquired from Utah over the summer, sat out.
The teams were tied at 115 with under two minutes to play when Austin Rivers scored on a layup and Luka Garza hit a 6-foot hook to create enough of a buffer for Minnesota to remain undefeated in its three preseason games.
PELICANS 111, SPURS 97
In San Antonio, Trey Murphy III had 27 points and eight rebounds, Zion Williamson finished with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists in 24 minutes to lead New Orleans over the Spurs.
Naji Marshall scored 15 points for the Pelicans, and Jonas Valanciunas added 14 as New Orleans continued to play with stars resting or recovering from injury. Among those not active were CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram and Jaxson Hayes, who suffered a left elbow injury earlier in the week.
Murphy was 10 of 15 from the field, including 7 for 10 from beyond the arc.
Devonte Graham and Willy Hernangomez each scored 11 points. Graham added six assists and Hernangomez grabbed 10 rebounds.
Doug McDermott led the Spurs with 14 points, and Josh Richardson finished with 12. Veteran Gorgui Dieng had 10 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio.
KINGS 126, TRAIL BLAZERS 94
In Sacramento, Keegan Murray, the fourth overall pick in the draft from Iowa, scored 16 points and eight players reached double figures in leading the Kings past Portland.
Terence Davis and De&rsquo;Aaron Fox scored 14 points apiece for the Kings, while Domantas Sabonis added 13 points, four assists and seven rebounds.
Jerami Grant led Portland with 17 points. Anfernee Simons scored 16 and Jusuf Nurkic had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Damian Lillard was held to eight points, making only two of his 10 shots, including missing all four of his 3-points attempts. He did hand out six assists.
THUNDER 144, MACCABI RA&rsquo;ANANA 97
Eugene Omoruyi scored 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting in Oklahoma City's win over visiting Maccabi Ra&rsquo;anana.
Luguentz Dort had 23 for Oklahoma City, while Ousmane Dieng, the 11th pick in last summer&rsquo;s draft, had 16 points for the Thunder. Aleksej Pokusevski and Jalen Williams, the 12th overall pick from Santa Clara, scored 15 points apiece.
Jason Suggs led Maccabi with 40 points on 15-for-26 shooting, including 5 of 9 from long distance. Terrence Jones had 15 points and Norris Cole contributed 12.
Willy Workman finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Maccabi.
Oklahoma City sat a number of key players, including Josh Giddey, Tre Mann and Darius Bazley. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, dealing with a left MCL sprain, remained unavailable.

ANALYSIS: It was another massive season for the Nuggets star, averaging 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists. He also showed considerable improvement on the devensive end of the court where he averaged 0.9 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.
He also became the first player in NBA history with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a season.
Jokic lead the Nuggets to a 48-34 record and the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference without its other two stars in Jamal Murray &ndash; who miseed the entire season &ndash; and Michael Porter, Jr. who only played in nine games.
We'll see how close the voting was later in the week when the NBA makes the official announcement with Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo who were both finalists for the award.

DENVER (AP) &mdash; Nikola Jokic put up numbers never seen before in NBA history. Not from Wilt. Not from Kareem. Not from &ldquo;Air Jordan.&rdquo; Not from LeBron.
With a historic season, the Denver Nuggets big man earned his second straight Most Valuable Player award, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Monday. The NBA was preparing to make the announcement in the coming days, likely this week, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the voting results have not been announced.
ESPN, citing sources, first reported that Jokic would be named MVP again.
The 7-foot center became the first player in league history to eclipse 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a season. And that sort of dominance by the player nicknamed &ldquo;Joker&rdquo; helped convince voters that he should be the 13th player of the NBA&rsquo;s exclusive MVP back-to-back club.
The other finalists &mdash; who will finish second and third in some order &mdash; were Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, who led the league in scoring average, and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks.
The 27-year-old Jokic averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists on a team that was missing two max players in Jamal Murray (ACL) and Michael Porter Jr. (back). Required to carry the load night in and out, the big man from Sombor, Serbia, answered the call and guided the Nuggets to a 48-win season. They earned the No. 6 seed in the West before losing in five games to the Golden State Warriors in the opening round of the playoffs.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just remarkable what he&rsquo;s done,&rdquo; Nuggets coach Michael Malone recently said of Jokic. &ldquo;I know that I&rsquo;m very biased, I admit it wholeheartedly &mdash; the MVP isn&rsquo;t even a competition. There&rsquo;s other great players, I&rsquo;m not saying they&rsquo;re not great players, but what Nikola Jokic has done this year, with this team, with everything that we&rsquo;ve had to go through, is incredible.&rdquo;
The award is likely the start of a huge offseason for Jokic, who is eligible for a supermax extension that could guarantee him nearly $254 million over five seasons starting with 2023-24. He&rsquo;ll make $32.4 million next season.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s nothing more important&rdquo; than keeping Jokic, Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly recently said.
Jokic joins rarefied company in winning for a second straight season. The other players to win two in a row include Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, LeBron James (twice), Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (twice). Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell each won the award in three straight seasons.
Next year, Jokic will have his chance at a threepeat as well.
The award comes as no surprise to his teammates. They had a front-row seat to his performance every night.
Guard Bones Hyland posted on Twitter: &ldquo;Man.. All year I&rsquo;ve been saying it, I just woke up happier then ever like I won the award!! I&rsquo;m so proud of my boy man!! Great Player but a even better Leader &amp; Great Role model! Thanks for showing me the ropes this year Jokey! Congrats Ma Brother.&rdquo;
Former Nuggets coach George Karl posted: &ldquo;Incredible Jokic! He earned it. He was better this year than last and carried his team all season.&rdquo;
Known for his pinpoint passing as much as his soft touch, Jokic finished with a league-leading 19 triple-doubles. The 41st pick of the 2014 draft now has 76 in his career, which trails only Chamberlain (78) among centers.
After being knocked out of the playoffs &mdash; he averaged 31 points, 13.2 rebounds &mdash; Jokic was asked how he might celebrate should he win MVP.
&ldquo;Probably with some music, beer, friends around, family,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Like how you&rsquo;re supposed to do probably.
&ldquo;But if I don&rsquo;t get it, I&rsquo;m not going to die. I&rsquo;m just going to keep playing, keep trying to play the right way like I did my whole life.&rdquo;
There was a time when the Jokic was maligned for his game. More specifically, his defense and not being able to jump. His once-pudgy frame &mdash; Spurs coach Gregg Popovich good-naturedly ribbed him about it &mdash; has more strength to it.
Ever bother him that his game doesn&rsquo;t seem to generate the level of respect as other standout players?
&ldquo;Can&rsquo;t care less, brother,&rdquo; Jokic said.
He sees the court with the clarity of a point guard and has an arsenal of shots that includes smooth baby hooks around the rim and a soft 3-point touch.
Popovich had the apropos answer when asked if it was more important to take away Jokic&rsquo;s shot attempts or passes: &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think anybody has figured that out,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a great one.&rdquo;
Jokic cares immensely about winning &mdash; games, not hardware. He&rsquo;s not one to lobby on his own behalf, just letting his numbers do his talking. Last season when he won, he averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 boards and 8.3 assists. This season, he took his game to another level in making his fourth straight All-Star team.
&ldquo;If that&rsquo;s enough, it&rsquo;s enough,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If not, you cannot control that.&rdquo;
Funny story about his MVP trophy from a season ago: A few weeks ago, he said he wasn&rsquo;t exactly sure where it was as his family moves.
&ldquo;It is here in Denver,&rdquo; Jokic recently cracked.

Let's not discuss that clip any further besides pointing out how dramatically <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/wednesday-was-a-celebration-of-how-far-the-pelicans-have-come" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Pelicans changed course and captured the respect of the national basketball audience</a> this season. Stephen A.'s rant is less relevant for its substance and more noteworthy because ESPN is&nbsp;still talking about the Pelicans even after they were eliminated from a hard-fought, first-round series. New Orleans started 1-12 (!!) and turned into one of the NBA's true darlings in a matter of months &mdash; all without its most marketable star.
Brandon Ingram asserted his star status, averaging 22.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game (27.0/6.2/6.2 during the postseason) while taking a leap as a playmaker. CJ McCollum fit right in as a "1B" creator and microwave shooter after the trade deadline. Herb Jones is the <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/reassessing-herb-jones-upside" target="_blank" rel="noopener">certified steal of the 2021 NBA Draft</a>, and undrafted rookie Jose Alvarado isn't too far behind.
There is no hyperbole fit to describe the sheer joy I had watching the Pelicans through the wins and losses of this season, and if you followed along, you recognize the progress that far exceeded the record and results.
Perhaps the best part is that New Orleans remains built for the future.
Only three players hit free agency this offseason: Tony Snell, Jared Harper and Gary Clark. Everyone else is under contract for 2022-23 &mdash; no team options, no restricted free agents and no partial guarantees, per Spotrac. On the signing front, Zion is the biggest domino, as he'll be eligible to sign a rookie extension before hitting restricted free agency in summer 2023. At least publicly, he is giving positive indications:

However, Williamson has now missed a whopping 141 games in his NBA career. Even if he inks a max extension, which Dan Feldman of NBC Sports says <a href="&ldquo;Obviously,%20that%20conversation%20is%20going%20to%20be%20one%20that%20will%20be%20a%20challenge,&rdquo;%20Griffin%20said.%20&ldquo;When%20it&rsquo;s%20time%20to%20have%20that,%20we&rsquo;ll%20have%20it.%20And%20right%20now%20what%20we&rsquo;re%20focused%20on%20is%20him%20being%20healthy,%20and%20(being%20in)%20kind%20of%20elite%20condition%20to%20play%20basketball%20and%20we&rsquo;ll%20start%20there.&rdquo;" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could be worth well over $180 million</a>, Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin implied that talks might be complicated.
&ldquo;Obviously, that conversation is going to be one that will be a challenge,&rdquo; Griffin said. &ldquo;When it&rsquo;s time to have that, we&rsquo;ll have it. And right now what we&rsquo;re focused on is him being healthy, and (being in) kind of elite condition to play basketball and we&rsquo;ll start there.&rdquo;
Ultimately, Williamson's health and wealth are the rudder of the Pelicans' ceiling. But Griffin still has much to address on other fronts.
New Orleans has the Lakers' first round pick with zero protections &mdash; an exciting opportunity given that pick has the eighth-best lottery odds. At the very least, the Pelicans get a free chance to add another young talent to the rotation, and if things break right, they could add another franchise cornerstone.

Senior NBA Draft Analyst Matt Babcock projects New Orleans to pick Duke freshman AJ Griffin in <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/draft" target="_blank" rel="noopener">our latest mock draft</a> if they remain at No. 8. Griffin is a high-upside choice as one of the youngest players in the draft class. A long, 6-foot-6 wing, he's returned from injuries in high school and at Duke, and flashes traits of a dynamic three-level scorer and creator.
The Pelicans send their first-rounder to Charlotte as part of last summer's Devonte' Graham trade. But they still hold their own second-round pick (No. 41 overall) and a pick from Utah (No. 52). Babcock has Kentucky center Oscar Tshiebwe and Villanova guard Collin Gillespie mocked to New Orleans in the second round.
Even with a packed roster and their draft picks, the Pelicans still have assets to get frisky in free agency. They'll have $10.2 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception to use on a free agent along with a $4 million bi-annual exception. More notable is their $17 million trade exception generated from trading Steven Adams to the Memphis Grizzlies. New Orleans could absorb a player into that exception with some financial flexibility.
But how much should the Pelicans shake things up? Since Jan. 1, they sported the 17th-best offense and defense, according to Cleaning the Glass, and were still only the ninth seed in a deep Western Conference at season's end. Yet we saw other young prospects &mdash; most notably Jaxson Hayes and Trey Murphy III &mdash; visibly develop as the year moved along. The five-man unit of McCollum, Ingram, Jones, Hayes and Jonas Valanciunas played 294 possessions after the trade deadline and was a solid plus-7.1 points per 100 possessions.
New Orleans receives one of the NBA's biggest boosts if Zion Williamson comes back healthy to open 2022-23. Willie Green gets a summer to prepare after a stellar first season as a head coach. The Pelicans have a bright future ahead, and this offseason should purely be icing on the cake.

2022 NBA offseason preview: What's next for the New Orleans Pelicans?

The NBA playoffs are fast approaching and as the season winds down, there are a total of 21 teams fighting for 16 playoff spots across the two conferences.
Every game matters.
Injuries have had a major impact on this season. In the Western Conference, a number of potential playoff teams are missing key pieces, including the Golden State Warriors (Stephen Curry and James Wiseman), Denver Nuggets (Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.), Los Angeles Clippers (Kawhi Leonard and Paul George), Memphis Grizzlies (Ja Morant), Los Angeles Lakers (Anthony Davis), New Orleans Pelicans (Zion Williamson) and Portland Trail Blazers (Damian Lillard).
There are fewer injured stars in the Eastern Conference, but Jarrett Allen (CLE), Ben Simmons (BKN), Lonzo Ball (CHI), Gordon Hayward (CHA) and Colin Sexton (CLE) are currently sidelined.
Between now and the start of the playoffs on April 12, some important players are expected to return to their respective teams, which could alter the NBA landscape in a major way.
<h2>WESTERN CONFERENCE</h2>
DENVER NUGGETS
On March 15, the Nuggets assigned Jamal Murray to their G-League affiliate (the Grand Rapids Gold) to get some additional work at practice. This sent waves through social media, as fans anticipated Murray's long-awaited return to the Nuggets' lineup. However, just a few days later, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said that Murray is "not close" to suiting up.

It seems unlikely that Murray will be able to play during the regular season, but perhaps he'll be able to return at some point during the postseason.
Michael Porter Jr. is also on the mend, but the reports about his availability have been all over the place. There were rumblings that his rehab didn't go great and that he was further away than Murray. Then, there was a rumor that he's <a href="https://theathletic.com/3198516/2022/03/21/nuggets-hopeful-jamal-murray-and-michael-porter-jr-could-be-back-by-playoffs-but-no-immediate-return-on-the-horizon/?source=nbatw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">due back very soon</a>.

A little over a week ago, Malone was asked about the possibility of Murray and Porter returning, and he <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/malone-michael-porter-jr-and-jamal-murrays-wont-be-back-soon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, "There is no immediate return on the horizon for either one of those players."
Denver is currently the sixth seed in the Western Conference, trying to stave off the Minnesota Timberwolves and avoid the Play-In Tournament.&nbsp;
Nikola Jokic has played at an MVP level (again) and the absence of these two stars has allowed for Bones Hyland to emerge as a legitimate rotation player as a rookie. Adding even one of these two players back into the fold would make the Nuggets a significantly more threatening first-round opponent for the Grizzlies, Warriors or Mavericks.&nbsp;

NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
Since the acquisition of CJ McCollum on February 8, the New Orleans Pelicans rank No. 10 in offensive rating and No. 6 in net rating. While the Pelicans won't be getting All-Star power forward Zion Williamson back at any point this season, they did just have another impact player return to their lineup.
Larry Nance Jr. was acquired as part of the McCollum trade and he made his Pelicans debut a few days ago. The 29-year-old is a seamless fit on the offensive end and he'll give New Orleans some defensive versatility.
Even though we all wanted to see how this team would look with a healthy Zion, they have a solid core with McCollum, Brandon Ingram, Jonas Valanciunas, Herb Jones, Devonte' Graham, Nance and Co. &mdash; making them a scary opponent in the Play-In Tournament.

New Orleans likely won't catch the Clippers for the eighth seed, but they could steal homecourt advantage in the 9-10 game against the Lakers, as they are currently a half game behind L.A.
LOS ANGELES LAKERS
With LeBron James on roster, there always seems to be this lingering feeling that the Lakers will catch their stride and figure this thing out. But without Anthony Davis, it seems unlikely that Los Angeles will be able to escape the Play-In Tournament.
There has been no official word on a potential return date for Davis, but the Lakers would need him available if they hope to play beyond April 12.

The presence of Davis would inject a tiny sliver of hope that he and James could will this team to victory and into a revenge series against the Phoenix Suns in the first round.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
Stephen Curry is expected to be out until mid-April at the earliest, which is a huge blow to the Warriors. Fortunately, Curry has <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/breakingnews/warriors-curry-expects-to-return-by-start-of-playoffs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that he should be back in time for the first game of the playoffs.
The team has reintroduced Klay Thompson back into the fold, and Draymond Green is back in the lineup too. While Golden State's star-studded trio has only played three games together this season, at least the Warriors should have all three vets together for the postseason (barring any setbacks or new injuries).
Unfortunately, Golden State won't be at full strength, as James Wiseman was recently <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/warriors-james-wiseman-ruled-out-for-remainder-of-the-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled out</a> for the remainder of this season. The sophomore is still recovering from a torn meniscus that he suffered last April. Wiseman's size and versatility would have helped the Warriors, especially when facing the likes of Nikola Jokic, Rudy Gobert and Jaren Jackson Jr.
Golden State has been struggling without Curry, dropping four of their last five games (including surprising losses to the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks). Golden State surrendered the No. 2 seed to the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Warriors could slip to fourth in the Western Conference, leading to a potential second-round matchup against Phoenix (instead of Memphis or Utah).&nbsp;
Still, assuming the Warriors have their Big Three, they will be dangerous in the playoffs.
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
Recently, Clippers head coach Ty Lue was asked about Kawhi Leonard and Paul George potentially returning prior to the playoffs, and he didn't shoot down the possibility.
"If guys are able to [return], they are gonna do it," Lue said. "But the most important part is making the sure the players are taken care of and making sure they're ready to go and fully healthy."

Leonard has been sidelined since last postseason, and Clippers fans have been holding out hope for a late-season comeback. ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33579571/nba-playoffs-injury-updates-steph-curry-zion-williamson-anthony-davis-more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that Leonard may be able to return if the Clippers make it out of the Play-In Tournament.
George has been sidelined due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and there is no timetable for his return. Recently, he has <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33579571/nba-playoffs-injury-updates-steph-curry-zion-williamson-anthony-davis-more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> made progress and been cleared for 4-on-4 and shooting drills, so a return still seems possible.&nbsp;

<h2>EASTERN CONFERENCE</h2>
CHICAGO BULLS
The Bulls skyrocketed to the top of the East standings early in the season thanks to a supernova DeMar DeRozan and stellar defense. Two key cogs of that defense were Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso, who have played just 35 and 36 games, respectively. Chicago also played most of the season without forward Patrick Williams, who's another important rotation player.&nbsp;
The absence of those two elite perimeter defenders caused the Bulls to slip to the East's five seed, and they are just one game ahead of the sixth-seeded Toronto Raptors.&nbsp;
Caruso returned on March 12 and Williams returned on March 21. But if Ball is able to return to the starting lineup, that could significantly affect the outcome of a series against the Celtics or 76ers.
However, here's the bad news:

Ball may not be needed for Chicago to avoid the Play-In Tournament, but his return is crucial in order for the Bulls to make a deep run in the playoffs.
CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Colin Sexton is not coming back this season. In fact, it's possible that he has played his final game as a Cavalier since he's set to become a restricted free agent.
However, one of the main reason that the Cavaliers have exceeded expectations this season is the play of Jarrett Allen. Ricky Rubio was also a key cog in the Cleveland machine, but his injury back in December led to the acquisition of Rajon Rondo... who is also currently out with an ankle injury.&nbsp;
Allen's presence defensively next to Evan Mobley is crucial to the success of the Cavs. Cleveland's opponents take the ninth-most shots at the rim in the league, but they shoot the worst percentage. Their perimeter defense funnels opponents to the rim because of the three 7-footers they have on the floor.&nbsp;
For Cleveland to pull off a first-round upset, Allen must be present and continuing his career-year.&nbsp;

Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game and oftentimes play a major factor in the postseason. This year is proving to be no different, as the field seems wide open due to injuries and the players who are returning could have a major impact on who is eventually crowned champion.
BROOKLYN NETS
After arriving in Brooklyn, Ben Simmons began ramping up his conditioning and preparing to make his season debut, but then his back started giving him trouble. Initially, it was being described as back soreness, but he was recently diagnosed with a herniated disc and he needed an epidural for the pain.
Nets head coach Steve Nash has said that surgery isn't currently being considered. Simmons is working with a physical therapist and trying to get healthy enough to make his Nets debut. Nash told reporters that he's "fully expecting" Simmons to play at some point this season.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33520712/brooklyn-nets-hold-hope-ben-simmons-return-couple-regular-season-games" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Brooklyn hopes to have Simmons for a "couple" regular-season games so that he can start shaking off the rust and getting acclimated prior to the postseason.
Whenever he returns, the Defensive-Player-of-the-Year runner-up will provide a huge boost for the Nets. Last season, Simmons averaged 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.6 steals with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Examining 11 impact players whose return could alter NBA playoffs

At the approximately one-quarter mark of the NBA season, I would have expected we'd get a clearer picture of the league hierarchy.
That is not so.
First place and 13th place in the Eastern Conference are separated by just six games. Fourth place to 10th place in the Western Conference are just a game-and-a-half apart. So many franchises have been hit with obstacles in such a short time that, aside from a handful of bottom-feeders, it's tough to discern the contenders from the pretenders leaguewide. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a tier of "most chaotic" teams that fill up our rankings.
If you're new to the Sour Rankings, here's a refresher: Unlike the typical "power rankings" that repeat themselves throughout sports media, Sour Rankings are a bizarro-world counter. These rankings highlight the top-10 most frustrating NBA franchises throughout the season, and they will be updated every week to match the twists and turns of the league.&nbsp;

Teams well under .500 may never touch the Sour Rankings because they are on track with their respective processes. Injuries, drama, transactions and generally underwhelming play will earn you a spot on this list.

Escaping the Sour Rankings:&nbsp;The Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies continued to build on positive consecutive weeks. They're all back to .500 or better with some statement wins, and thus, sneak out in lieu of some falling squads.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers (10-10)
After finally ending a five-game losing streak with a nice win over the lowly Orlando Magic, Cleveland gets a chance to turn the tide back around with Evan Mobley healthy.&nbsp;

9. Philadephia 76ers (10-10)
Philly went 2-7 in the stretch Joel Embiid missed while he was recovering from COVID-19. In his return, Embiid dropped 42 points, but the 76ers still lost in double-overtime against the (rival?) Timberwolves. It's certainly great to have Embiid back, and the 76ers will no doubt return to winning soon, but the skid was a sobering reminder that this team does not have the depth to sustain injuries or other absences to its stars.

8. Detroit Pistons (4-16)
This is not meant as a dig toward Cade Cunningham; the No. 1 pick is still woefully inefficient as a shooter, but has shown plenty of other promising flashes so far. The problem is little else jumps out as exciting across the roster &mdash; aside from <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/killian-hayes-is-finding-his-way-playing-off-cade-cunningham-detroit-pistons" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Killian Hayes' catch-and-shoot threes</a>. The Pistons have lost six in a row with a roster that really isn't super young. Zero players on the league's worst offense shoot over 37% from long range. Among the bottom-dwellers, this has been one of the uglier rebuilding seasons.

7. Toronto Raptors (9-12)

All that talk about Toronto's length-fueled defensive juggernaut has yet to translate, as the Raptors have the NBA's second-worst defense over the past two weeks. After taking down the Grizzlies, the Raptors lost twice by double digits to the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics &mdash; two squads in the same apparent tier of playoff contention. Should the playoffs even be the focus for a young team rebuilding on the fly? That's up for debate, but if you're expecting a postseason appearance, things currently look grim.

6. Sacramento Kings (8-13)
Beating the Los Angeles Lakers in a triple-overtime thriller sure feels great for Kings fans, but that got nullified pretty quickly when Sacramento gave up 128 points to a Ja Morant-less Grizzlies team. The Kings forced just nine Memphis turnovers and got outrebounded 68-49 in the blowout loss. Opponents have scored 120 or more points in 4 of the last 5 contests. For interim head coach Alvin Gentry, that's the first task: get something out of a traditionally inept defense.

5. New Orleans Pelicans (5-17)
How about the Pelicans? A 2-2 week with wins over the Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz is nothing to sneeze at. Devonte' Graham's game-winner against Utah gave NOLA fans their highlight of the season, and we're starting to get promising flashes from young players like Kira Lewis Jr. and Herb Jones. Jones, in particular, has been a defensive revelation as a second-round rookie who now starts; he has three or more steals in each of his last three games.

4. New York Knicks (11-9)
Tom Thibodeau said Monday that <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/kemba-walker-no-longer-in-knicks-rotation-alec-burks-will-start-vs-nets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kemba Walker will not be part of the Knicks' rotation</a> for the time being, and Alec Burks will start at point guard on Tuesday against the Nets. Regardless of how you feel about the recent 2-1 stretch, that's a pretty rough look for one of the marquee additions of the offseason. New York has had the 21st-ranked offense through the past two weeks as RJ Barrett continues to flounder.&nbsp;

3. Los Angeles Lakers (11-11)

Despite winning the night before Thanksgiving, the Lakers should sure be glad they played Detroit on Sunday night. Things were looking ugly after the fully healthy squad lost to the Kings to fall back under .500. L.A. is one of the worst rebounding teams in basketball; they're 27th in offensive-rebound percentage, per Cleaning the Glass, and sixth-worst in opposing offensive rebound percentage. With a mediocre offense and a below-average defense, second-chance opportunities become even more devastating.

2. Houston Rockets (3-16)
The Rockets have a nice little winning streak going after snapping their 15-game slide with narrow victories over the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets. Christian Wood dropped 33 points and 16 rebounds, and Kevin Porter Jr. put up 23 points and 12 assists, in the wild overtime win over Charlotte.
That's nice and all, but I need to see more from more young players to consider moving the Rockets &mdash; especially with the drama surfacing about <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/whats-wrong-with-the-houston-rockets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stephen Silas on the hot seat</a> and <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/john-wall-will-continue-to-sit-games-after-meeting-with-rockets-front-office" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Wall asking for (and not getting) playing time</a>.

1. Denver Nuggets (9-10)
Denver is riding a six-game losing streak with the worst defense and worst point differential in the NBA over the past two weeks. The team lost PJ Dozier for the season due to a torn ACL, and are reportedly losing Michael Porter Jr. for the year as well when <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/michael-porter-jr-to-undergo-potential-season-ending-back-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">undergoes the third back surgery</a> in his short career. No need to dive much deeper; it's pretty obvious the Nuggets are in a tailspin.&nbsp;

The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks also continue to underwhelm.

NBA Sour Rankings: Injury-plagued Nuggets tumble to No. 1

A month is only a fraction of the NBA calendar, but it does set a tone for teams as they find their groove. Some franchises have burst out of the gate, while other have underwhelmed to start.
While it's still a small sample size, we asked our BasketballNews.com writers earlier this week:
<h3>One month into the season, which team are you most concerned about?</h3>
Alex Kennedy: It has to be the New Orleans Pelicans, right? The team is 3-15 and they rank in the bottom-five both offensively (26th) and defensively (29th). Zion Williamson will likely miss a few more weeks as he recovers from a fractured right foot; he&rsquo;ll be re-evaluated on Nov. 24 to determine whether he can start participating in full team workouts. Executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin is <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/pelicans-exec-david-griffin-on-hot-seat-after-slow-start-altercation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly on the hot seat</a> due to the team&rsquo;s struggles. Things are ugly behind the scenes too, as Griffin and former Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry recently got into an ugly altercation at Smoothie King Center and had to be physically separated. But wait, there&rsquo;s more! There are some big-picture concerns too: Back in June, <a href="https://theathletic.com/2656520/2021/06/17/inside-the-end-of-stan-van-gundy-with-the-pelicans-and-an-ongoing-battle-to-keep-zion-williamson-happy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Athletic reported</a> that some of Zion&rsquo;s family members &ldquo;want Williamson on another team" and have "voiced their displeasure with the organization." Yikes.
Nekias Duncan: It has to be the Atlanta Hawks for me. They've looked disjointed on both sides of the floor, a troubling sign for a team fresh off a Conference Finals berth. The defense has fallen off a cliff; the offense doesn't generate enough paint touches. Lineups have fluctuated, and now De'Andre Hunter is expected to miss time with a wrist injury. Hopefully they'll find some semblance of rhythm soon.
Spencer Davies: Before the season, even before the Zion Williamson injury news, the New Orleans Pelicans were kind of trending downward for me. There just seems to be a disconnect somewhere from the top on down. Add in Brandon Ingram &mdash; who&rsquo;s having a career year, in spite of NOLA&rsquo;s issues &mdash; missing some time in early November, and this team has had to rely on a lot of Jonas Valanciunas and Devonte&rsquo; Graham to push them forward. The former is having a great individual season statistically, but the Pels just can&rsquo;t seem to A) play with leads or B) keep games close. Two wins in 16 games is hardly going to do you any favors in the Western Conference. You have to feel for Willie Green, and it almost is reminiscent of what Stephen Silas went through (and is still going through) in Houston.
Ethan Fuller: The Atlanta Hawks have come out of the starting gate with one of the worst defenses in the NBA. Now they've lost De'Andre Hunter for two months due to a wrist injury. It also concerns me that, per Cleaning the Glass, Atlanta ranks 26th in rim frequency and 28th in three-point frequency but 2nd in mid-range frequency. It doesn't seem like the offense is maximizing its talent, and the defense is giving opponents an advantage.
Jannelle Moore: The Los Angeles Lakers, at this point, are the most concerning. Granted, LeBron James was out of the lineup for most of the start. But that doesn't explain their struggles on defense. They have AD and Russ; they shouldn't be struggling to this degree.
Moke Hamilton: Portland, without question. Personally, I feel like it&rsquo;s time for everyone to move on, including Damian Lillard. It looks like, many times, they&rsquo;re just going through the motions and don&rsquo;t really have the look of a team that believes it&rsquo;s actually playing for something. As much as I like Dame and have advocated for everyone to leave him alone, it&rsquo;s time to send him elsewhere, along with CJ McCollum.
Evan Sidery: New Orleans, not only because Zion Williamson&rsquo;s injury issues, but also because of the lack of depth. Brandon Ingram is an All-Star talent. Jonas Valanciunas is a solid starting center. Outside of that, there&rsquo;s not much else to bank on consistently. The Pelicans&rsquo; slow start has put them into a deep hole that Zion likely won&rsquo;t be able to dig them out of. New Orleans is on the fast track to a top draft pick.
Blake Hairston: The Boston Celtics have been the team I've been concerned about for a few years now. Each season they're good but not good enough, and now the teams around them have gotten better. It just feels like each season we question what this team's ceiling is and this year that question got a little murkier.
Alexander Cohen: Despite Ja Morant picking up from where he left off in the playoffs, averaging a career-high 26 points per game, the Grizzlies are in trouble. They own the NBA's worst defensive rating and their offense isn't much better, ranked 20th. While Dillon Brooks returning from injury could help shore up their defense, it wasn't enough to prevent an embarrassing double-digit loss to 1-12 New Orleans Pelicans in his second game back. The Grizzlies are a young team, but they need to exhibit improvement in Ja Morant's third season after a massive Jaren Jackson Jr. extension, not take a step backwards.
Drew Maresca: Selfishly, the New York Knicks. As far as their record is concerned, New York is right where you&rsquo;d expect. But there are a number of problems. Generally, the Knicks have the 18th-best defensive rating, down from third last season. That&rsquo;s worrisome. Even more alarming is their starting unit&rsquo;s defense, which had the worst defensive rating of any five-man rotation ever entering play last Monday night, according to StatMuse. Coach Tom Thibodeau is known for defense, so there is reason to believe this will right itself. But if it doesn&rsquo;t, it&rsquo;s going to get significantly uglier. The Knicks play the fourth-toughest remaining schedule, according to Tankathon.
Jesse Blancarte: The Bucks. Key players have been sidelined, but the reigning champs are struggling more than I would have imagined to start this season. There are several teams missing key players that are managing better than Milwaukee, but it&rsquo;s still only November. There is time for the Bucks to turn things around and climb their way up the Eastern Conference standings.

2021-22 NBA Season Preview: Southwest Division

After rolling out my<a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/ranking-the-top-150-nba-players-for-fantasy-basketball-in-2021-22" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Top-150 NBA Fantasy overall rankings</a> last week, I have broken down each position into tiers.
It is important to state that these rankings are based on a nine-category roto format (points, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks, three-pointers, field goal percentage, free-throw percentage and turnovers). Also, please note position eligibility is based on Yahoo&rsquo;s fantasy settings and, as a result, many players qualify at multiple positions.
Guards
The two biggest question marks among all guards reside in Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Ben Simmons has (awkwardly) returned to Sixers, but it is still unclear whether Big Ben plans to "merely report to the team or truly rejoin the team," <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/ben-simmons-arrives-in-philly-takes-covid19-test" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN</a>. Thus, Simmons is arguably the biggest boom-or-bust fantasy pick in the NBA this season.
Irving, on the other hand, is <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/itll-be-difficult-for-kyrie-and-the-nets-to-come-back-from-this" target="_blank" rel="noopener">persona non grata in the borough of Brooklyn</a>. Although Kyrie is eligible to participate in the Nets' away games, Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks said Tuesday that Irving will not be allowed to play or practice with the team at all until he gets vaccinated. &ldquo;He has a choice to make, and he made his choice,&rdquo; Marks <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nets-say-kyrie-irving-cant-play-or-practice-with-team-while-unvaccinated" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told reporters Tuesday</a>. &ldquo;And my job here is to make what we deem is the best choices for the organization moving ahead and as a whole.&rdquo; There is certainly still a chance Irving gets his jab and is cleared to play, but it&rsquo;s too much of a risk to roll the dice until late in the draft, in my opinion.

Looking for a potential sleeper at forward? I&rsquo;d suggest highlighting Pascal Siakam or Evan Mobley on your cheat sheet.&nbsp;
After a phenomenal 2019-20 campaign, in which he was named to the All-NBA Second Team, Siakam failed to live up to expectations last season; his scoring average, three-point makes and effective field goal percentage all decreased. In addition, Pascal is still working his way back from surgery on a torn labrum, which has forced his ADP (Average Draft Position) to plummet. However, earlier this week, Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said his star forward has been &ldquo;going 100%&rdquo; without contact for about 4-6 weeks, and could return later this month.&nbsp;

Centers take on added importance in fantasy hoops due to the scarcity. That&rsquo;s part of the reason why Jokic is viewed as the near-unanimous top overall selection in drafts this year.&nbsp;

Last season, Jokic authored a season for the ages. Not only did he score a career-high 26.4 points and rip down 10.8 rebounds per game, but he also dished out an average of 8.3 dimes each night, joining Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 10 boards and 8 assists over a season. Incredibly, Jokic tallied a total of 599 assists in 2020-21, which was the third-most in the entire league. Wilt Chamberlain, who led the NBA with 8.6 APG in 1967-68, is the only center to post a higher assist-average over a full season. As a fantasy cherry on top, the Joker proved incredibly durable, appearing in every game last season.

2021-22 NBA Fantasy Basketball Rankings: 10 tiers for each position

With the start of the season just three weeks away, here is my ranking of the top 150 players for the 2021-22 campaign.
It is imperative to note that this list is based on nine-category roto scoring formats (points, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks, three-pointers, field goal percentage, free-throw percentage and turnovers) .&nbsp;
I've added comments to a handful of players to help explain the rationale behind some of their rankings.&nbsp;
So without further ado, let's get to it.
1. Nikola Jokic PF, C (DEN) 2. James Harden PG, SG (BKN): The Beard was the top-ranked fantasy player in back-to-back seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He's healthy and ready to rock in Brooklyn. 3. Luka Doncic PG, SG (DAL) 4. Stephen Curry PG, SG (GSW) 5. Karl-Anthony Towns C (MIN) 6. Damian Lillard PG (POR): Dame is one of only two players in NBA history to record at least 1,500 points and 400 assists in each of their first nine seasons; Oscar Robertson is the other. 7. Jayson Tatum SF, PF (BOS) 8. Giannis Antetokounmpo PF, C (MIL): There have been some mildly concerning signs regarding Giannis' left knee since the start of training camp. Ranking the top-150 NBA players for fantasy basketball in 2021-22

If we were to compare free agency to a regulation NBA game, most Knicks fans were discouraged by New York's first-quarter performance, believing their favorite team stumbled out of the gate.
On Monday, the first day that front offices were able to start negotiating with players available on the open market, Knicks fans learned that the team had inked Evan Fournier to a four-year deal worth as much as $78 million and re-signed Derrick Rose (to a three-year, $43 million contract), Alec Burks (to a three-year, $30 million contract) and Nerlens Noel (to a three-year, $32 million contract).
SNY <a href="https://twitter.com/IanBegley/status/1422323666415665157?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">initially reported</a> that Burks' three-year deal was fully guaranteed. When no additional contract details were reported, Knicks fans feared the worst: that all of the pacts were fully guaranteed. Many New York supporters went to bed feeling distressed and pessimistic on Monday night.
The Knicks entered this summer's free-agency frenzy with north of $50 million in cap space, which was more than any other team in the league. Fans were hoping the team would make a significant splash with all that cash. Committing $183 million in guaranteed salaries to Fournier, Rose, Burks and Noel was not what they had in mind.

However, on Tuesday morning, reports began to trickle out that the new contracts included team-friendly terms. Eventually, multiple outlets confirmed that all four pacts had a team option for the final season. That made each of the deals far more palatable, as it means each contract is far easier to trade and that New York has more cap flexibility moving forward. The fanbase was starting to come around. However, the franchise had burned through most of their cap space and still didn't have a clear-cut starting point guard on the roster.
But New York woke up to some wonderful news on Wednesday morning. Kemba Walker, who was born and raised in the Bronx, was coming home to NYC. After being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder by the Boston Celtics, Walker agreed to a buyout with the Thunder and would be joining the Knicks. He would be paid approximately $9 million per year &mdash; a relative bargain for a starting point guard of his caliber. Knicks fans rejoiced.
The following morning, Knicks fans once again were greeted with excellent news. The team's best player, Julius Randle, had agreed to a four-year extension. Like Walker, Randle decided to forgo a more profitable payday for the opportunity to play in Madison Square Garden.
On Friday, team president Leon Rose, capologist Brock Aller, and general manager Scott Perry put a bow on a banner week by announcing the team had signed guard Miles "Deuce" McBride &mdash; the 36th overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft &mdash; to a contract. The announcement's timing is important because it means the Knicks likely used their available cap space to sign McBride. Consequently, his contract can run up to four years, including team options, instead of just two.
Let's take a quick look at the significance of each new signing.
Evan Fournier
Fournier will provide much-needed three-point marksmanship and shot creation to an offense that was often stagnant for long stretches last season. Despite suffering through a debilitating bout of COVID-19 and its lingering side effects (Fournier compared its impact to a concussion), he finished the 2020-21 campaign shooting a scorching 46.3% from downtown.
Over the past two seasons combined, Fournier is one of only eight players in the league to average more than 6.5 three-point attempts per game while shooting over 40% from downtown. The other seven players in the club are Steph Curry, Duncan Robinson, Bogdan Bogdanović, Davis Bertans, Bojan Bogdanović, Paul George and Kyrie Irving.
Having Fournier replace Reggie Bullock in the starting lineup will hurt New York on the defensive end of the floor, but the Knicks finished last season ranked inside the top-five in defensive efficiency, while they ranked 22nd overall in offensive efficiency.
Kemba Walker
Is Kemba Walker's left knee a concern? Absolutely. But if Kemba is even 80% healthy, he would immediately rank as the best point guard to wear a Knicks uniform since George W. Bush was in the White House. Over the past six seasons combined, dating back to the start of 2015-16, Walker has averaged 22.2 points, 5.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 made three-pointers. Only three players have matched or exceeded those per-game averages: Steph Curry, James Harden and Damian Lillard.
Even in a down season last year, Walker averaged 19.3 points, 4.9 dimes and 3.0 made treys a night. In the 75-year history of the Knicks franchise, no point guard has ever averaged at least 19.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 triples in any single season.
It's been more than 30 years since a Knicks point guard played in an All-Star game (Mark Jackson in 1989). Walker has been named an All-Star in four of the past five seasons.

Elfrid Payton logged a total of 1,484 minutes last season, the second-most among all guards on the team. Having a combination of Walker and Rose inherit all those minutes in 2021-22 represents a massive upgrade for a team that finished 10 games over .500 last year.
The Knicks faced zone defenses more than any team in the league last season. With Kemba and Fournier now in the starting lineup, opposing defenses will hesitate to switch to zone. And having Kemba run pick-and-rolls should significantly enhance the vertical spacing threat a healthy Mitchell Robinson brings to the table. Walker's ability to penetrate into the paint will also produce substantial dividends, as he draws fouls on opposing bigs and racks up points at the charity stripe. Over his two seasons in New York (108 total games), Payton made 122 free throws. In just 43 games last season for the Celtics, Walker made 143 free throws.
If New York had to pay market value for a point guard with Walker's skillset and resume, it would have been worth the cost. The fact that the Knicks will pay him less than $10 million makes the signing a steal.

Julius Randle
Did Julius Randle struggle mightily in the playoffs? Absolutely. Would the Knicks have advanced to the postseason and secured home-court advantage for just the second time this century if Randle hadn't carried the team on his back all year? Absolutely not.
Randle put together one of the most impressive all-around campaigns in franchise history, averaging 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. To help put his 2020-21 regular season stats in context, consider this. Randle:

<li>dished out more assists than LeBron James and Stephen Curry;</li>
<li>scored more points than Jayson Tatum and Trae Young;</li>
<li>shot a higher three-point percentage than Damian Lillard and Duncan Robinson;</li>
<li>posted a higher effective field goal percentage than Anthony Davis and Paul George;</li>
<li>accumulated more win shares than Luka Doncic and James Harden;</li>
<li>recorded a higher player efficiency rating than Devin Booker and Kyle Lowry;</li>
<li>posted a higher box plus/minus than Jrue Holiday and Donovan Mitchell;&nbsp;</li>
<li>registered a higher value over replacement player than Rudy Gobert and Chris Paul.</li>
</ul>
Coming off an All-NBA-Second-Team campaign, Randle had the opportunity to play out the upcoming season and hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent next summer. At that point, he would have been eligible for a max contract worth north of $200 million. Instead, he inked a four-year, $107 million extension that can increase to $117 million if specific incentives are met. Randle is only 26 years old and just now entering the heart of his prime.
To put Randle's contract in perspective, compare it to some of the other lucrative deals signed this month. DeMar DeRozan, already 32 years old, will earn an average of $28.3 million over the next three seasons. Jimmy Butler will earn $51.6 million in the final year of his contract (2025-26), at which point he will be 36 years old. That same season, Randle will be 30 and in the final year of his contract and will earn $29.4 million. Randle is younger than Duncan Robinson and Norm Powell, both of whom inked $90 million deals. Randle is the same age as Devonte' Graham and Kendrick Nunn. Randle is three years younger than Tim Hardaway Jr.
Last season, Randle told reporters that he hoped to be a Knick "for the rest of my career, that's really what I want." Players say such things all the time, yet when they have an opportunity to cash in, they (understandably) hold out for the highest offer. Randle, however, quite literally put his money where his mouth is.

When you consider where the Knicks were just 10 months ago, the progress the franchise has made is remarkable. First, they vastly exceeded expectations on the court and then continued to build on that success thus far this offseason.
For years, various New York front-office executives have failed to persuade stars to sign on the dotted line. This past week, not only did New York add an All-Star-caliber point guard, but that point guard could have joined pretty much any team in the league and he opted for the Knicks.
Then the team's best player, fresh off a season in which he finished inside the top-10 in MVP voting, re-upped with New York for significantly less than market value. It&rsquo;s certainly a sign of progress for the franchise and a validation of what the organization is hoping to create.
When pundits talk about teams incrementally "developing a culture,&rdquo; this is what they mean.
After another step in the right direction this week, fans can feel confident that the Knicks will continue building momentum going forward.

There was a study done by the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/ripcity/comments/i9qqg2/damian_lillard_has_the_best_range_in_the_nba_yes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eagle-eyed users of NBA Reddit</a> not too long ago on Aug. 14 of last year. They used NBA.com's shooting splits data to try and find which player has the deepest range (and is the most accurate) in the league by combining regular-season and playoff shots from 30 feet or more; ranking by their best individual seasons from that distance, the highest percentage belonged to 2019-20 Lillard (42%), followed by 2015-16 Curry (38%) and 2019-20 Trae Young (36%).
With the 2020-21 regular season in the rearview and the postseason underway -- and Lillard's ridiculous eight-triple barrage in Game 2 on Sunday night fresh in the mind -- let's take a look at how these three have fared from that distance, and who else joins the fray.
There were five players that attempted at least 400 shots between the 25-to-29 foot range, per NBA.com. It was Lillard, Curry, Buddy Hield, Luka Doncic and Duncan Robinson. Curry was the only one with over 500 tries by a wide margin.
Using that as a jumpoff point, as well as the Reddit study, here's where we stand currently altogether on 30-plus-foot range:

As you can plainly see, there's quite a few players trying to extend their range -- and some like Irving, Quickley, Mitchell and Hield utilize it efficiently -- nobody's in the same stratosphere as Lillard and Curry far as volume is concerned. Though Young is making his way to that point, we just don't see these kinds of parking lot shots as often from anybody else as we do from the Oakland native and the Bay Area resident.
To advance the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/ripcity/comments/i9qqg2/damian_lillard_has_the_best_range_in_the_nba_yes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reddit career study's numbers</a>, here are the updated totals:
Lillard: 152/451 (33.7%)
Curry: 130/450 (28.9%)
Young: 92/255 (36.1%)
What Lillard and Curry -- and seemingly Trae Young -- are doing is unteachable and abnormal. They are the outliers to the regular.
Arguments are going to stem from the perception of firing up these shots; there's not one youth coach watching a Portland Trail Blazers-Golden State Warriors game and saying, "This is what I want to teach my players" with a straight face.
But does that mean we can't enjoy the show? Absolutely not.

After Damian Lillard's Game 2 barrage of threes, Spencer Davies illustrates why he and Stephen Curry are the exception to the rule of what is a "bad shot."

For stars like Damian Lillard and Stephen Curry, there's no such thing as a 'bad shot'

DENVER (AP) &mdash; Michael Porter Jr.'s <a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-nuggets-michael-porter-jr-nba-sports-8015ffa7143be4af8d00f0498e2de45f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">breakout season</a> lightened the load for Nikola Jokic during his MVP-worthy season and soothed the sting of Jamal Murray's season-ending knee injury.
So, Facundo Campazzo only meant to dish out some praise to his Denver teammate when asked about him recently.
&ldquo;He's a terrible ... terrible?" the 30-year-old rookie Argentinian guard stammered as he fumbled for the right words in English.
&ldquo;Terrible is good, right?&rdquo;
No, responded a public relations employee off to the side of Campazzo's postgame Zoom interview.
&ldquo;The opposite of terrible!&rdquo; Campazzo hurriedly corrected through an embarrassed laugh. &ldquo;He's a great shooter!&rdquo;
Campazzo smoothly shook off his stumble just as he has all other rookie mistakes he's made this season.
Ultimately, nothing was lost in translation.
And for Denver, little has been lost in transition.
A common take after Murray tore his left ACL at Golden State on April 12 was that the Nuggets' title hopes were waylaid along with their rising star guard.
Monte Morris and Will Barton would soon join Murray on the sideline with pulled hamstrings and P.J. Dozier injured a hip.
Instead of dooming the Nuggets, however, the rash of injuries allowed coach Michael Malone to experiment with his lineups.
With Campazzo, newly signed Austin Rivers and others rotating through the ever-changing lineups, the Nuggets won 13 of their final 18 games. Malone was named the NBA's Coach of the Month for leading the Nuggets to a 13-3 record in April, including 9-2 after Murray got hurt.
The Nuggets, who now have Morris back at full strength and are hoping to get Barton back soon, maintained their hold on the West's No. 3 seed.
Still, they say they'll miss Murray, who averaged 31 points in the playoffs last year, when they face the sixth-seeded Portland Trail Blazers in the first round.
&ldquo;Jamal was a big shot taker and a big shot maker for us,&rdquo; Aaron Gordon said. &ldquo;So, some of that offensive firepower for us is gone.&rdquo;
While the banged-up Nuggets welcomed the nearly weeklong break before the series opener Saturday night in Denver, the Blazers hope the layoff didn't cool them off after winning 10 of their final 12 regular-season games.

CENTERS OF ATTENTION
Jusuf Nurkic was hurt two years ago when these teams met in the second round. So, this marks the first time Portland's center will square off in the playoffs against Jokic, who relegated him to the bench during their time together in Denver.
Nurkic said he has no hard feelings and is even pulling for Jokic to win the NBA's <a href="https://apnews.com/article/utah-jazz-philadelphia-76ers-denver-nuggets-golden-state-warriors-new-york-knicks-40a78707bf6b3c2db0c7317e4c4c82dd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MVP award</a> over Stephen Curry and Joel Embiid.
"He has really ridiculous numbers, so I think he&rsquo;s supposed to be the MVP,&rdquo; Nurkic said.
Jokic returned the compliment, praising Nurkic&rsquo;s passing and &ldquo;basketball IQ."
Malone called the Nurkic trade to Portland in 2017 a win-win as both big men and both teams have thrived since their split.
&ldquo;We tried to play them both together early on, didn't have the results that we necessarily wanted,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;And the reality is the trade has benefitted Nurk, it's benefitted us.&rdquo;
Jokic blamed their clash on youth: &ldquo;In that moment we didn't know what to do," he said. "I think now we could play together.&rdquo;

This marks the first time Carmelo Anthony will face the team that drafted him in a playoff series since he forced his way out of Denver a decade ago.
Coming off the bench this season, Anthony leads the Blazers&rsquo; second unit with a 13.4-point scoring average.
&ldquo;What he&rsquo;s done for us in a year and a half has been what we needed. This year, the role that he&rsquo;s had off the bench has been a big part of the reason why we are where we are,&rdquo; Blazers coach Terry Stotts said.
GUARDING THE THREE
Portland already had one of the league's top backcourts in sharpshooters Damien Lillard and CJ McCollum. Now they also have Norman Powell, who has averaged 17 points a game since the Trail Blazers acquired him from Toronto at the trade deadline.
Powell opens up even more long-range shots for Lillard and McCollum.
&ldquo;Those three guards put a tremendous amount of pressure on your defense, especially from the 3-point line,&rdquo; Malone said. &ldquo;So, that would probably be the No. 1 concern is can we guard the 3 somehow, some way?&rdquo;

Assuming that Kawhi Leonard is going to come off the market by signing an extension with the Los Angeles Clippers, similar to what Paul George just did, the unrestricted free-agent class of 2021 got depleted in an extraordinary way yesterday with the news that <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-milwaukee-bucks-giannis-antetokounmpo-signs-five-year-228-million-contract-extension" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giannis Antetokounmpo is signing his five-year, $228 million supermax</a> extension with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Any team hoping to save space for an offseason spending spree just got kicked in the gut. And as a result, there is probably going to be a huge benefit for a class of restricted free agents who will be able to cash in as a result of the dearth of available veteran talent.
The San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder are currently projected to be the teams with at least $50 million in salary cap space if we project a salary cap of $112 million, which would be a slight rise from this year&rsquo;s number of $109.14 million. (There is a bit of guesswork here because the coronavirus pandemic and its economic impact on the NBA over the course of the upcoming season has yet to be determined.)&nbsp;
So those teams were the ones theoretically in the mix for Giannis had the Greek Freak not re-upped with Milwaukee, which finally has a superstar who wants to stay there long-term (take it from a columnist who was a Milwaukee resident at age 8 in 1973 when the Bucks last won a title, but then lost Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers because of his distaste for the city.)

But the Spurs, Knicks, Bulls, Pelicans, Cavs, Grizzlies and Thunder are only the tip of the iceberg as far as cap space is concerned. Teams with significant cap space (not including cap holds on their own free agents) include Orlando, Indiana, Utah, Toronto, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta and Charlotte.
And because teams are required under the Collective Bargaining Agreement to spend at least 90 percent of the cap on player salaries, there will be a lot of money to be spread around a free agency pool that ain&rsquo;t all that deep.
That&rsquo;s where things get rewarding for restricted free agents, a list that includes: John Collins (Hawks), Jarrett Allen (Nets), Devonte&rsquo; Graham (Hornets), Lauri Markkanen (Bulls), Svi Mykhailiuk (Pistons), Kyle Kuzma and Talen Horton-Tucker (Lakers), Luke Kennard (Clippers), Duncan Robinson and Kendrick Nunn (Heat), Lonzo Ball, Nicolo Melli and Josh Hart (Pelicans), Mitchell Robinson (Knicks), Justin Jackson, T.J. Leaf and Hamadou Diallo (Thunder), Markelle Fultz and Jonathan Isaac (Magic), Zach Collins and Gary Trent Jr. (Blazers), Derrick White (Spurs), OG Anunoby (Raptors) and Isaac Bonga (Wizards).
Not that anyone was going to put together a better team than what the Lakers will put together, but that is beside the point.
Hope is the lifeblood of every NBA fan who does not root for the Lakers, and the hope that a franchise player might somehow come aboard has been lessened considerably by Giannis coming off the market. It takes years and years and years to build through the draft, and it is rare to find a team (although Atlanta comes to mind this season) that has the patience to build slowly, but surely without trying to hit a home run through free agency.&nbsp;
But that will be the new normal in the years ahead, and the teams that have drafted well over the past half-decade are the teams that will become preeminent, as the NBA eventually moves to a post-LeBron era in which the next translucent superstar has not yet emerged from the pack. It could be Luka Doncic in Dallas, it could be Devin Booker in Phoenix, it could be Trae Young in Atlanta or Zion Williamson in New Orleans. We just don&rsquo;t know yet.
But what we do know is that the Bucks will be led by the two-time reigning MVP for another half-decade, but whether that ever translates into playoff success may depend more upon Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton than it does on Giannis.
The big winners here are the Bucks, along with the restricted free agents who will come up for new deals in the next two years -- and whoever gets James Harden, if he is traded. We did not exactly get clarity on that Tuesday night as Harden stayed silent after making his preseason debut for the Rockets, but the former MVP <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-news-james-harden-breaks-silence-speaks-media-houston-rockets-trade-rumors-stephen-silas-rafael-stone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broke his silence today</a>. 
Once Houston general manager Rafael Stone and owner Tilman Fertitta decide where the Harden thing is going to go, a clearer picture of what the 2020-21 season looks like will emerge. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that anything could happen at any moment. Kyle Guy of the Kings gave us an example late Tuesday night by draining a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Sacramento Kings a preseason victory over Golden State.
Tonight, LeBron James and Anthony Davis will see the court for the first time since the Lakers finished off the Heat in the NBA Finals in the bubble. Pretty much everyone expects them back in the Finals next spring, but the NBA season always brings surprises. At least the folks in Milwaukee will not have an unpleasant one as they hunker down for the winter. Giannis will be their rock for the next half-decade.&nbsp;
Moving forward, it&rsquo;s just a matter of seeing which are the best pieces the place around him... and whether the Bucks are good enough to beat out Brooklyn and Miami. Lest we forget, Milwaukee lost three straight before the pandemic hit, then went 3-5 in the bubble and 5-5 in the playoffs. So they&rsquo;ve lost 13 of their last 21 games. A supermax extension does not change that fact.
For now, this league still belongs to the Lakers and LeBron. A season down the road, it belongs to the restricted free agents.

Here's a position-by-position look at the top players who remain unsigned on Day 6 of NBA free agency.

Which NBA free agents are still available?

The Athletic&rsquo;s Shams Charania <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1326678884226658311" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped a bombshell of a tweet</a> on Wednesday night, reporting that Rockets star Russell Westbrook wants out of Houston.
It&rsquo;s a bizarre and abrupt request on the heels of Big-Mouth-styled changes going on in the organization. Head coach Mike D&rsquo;Antoni is gone, replaced by Stephen Silas. Daryl Morey, the architect of the smaller-than-smallball Rockets, left for bluer pastures in Philadelphia. Westbrook, reportedly frustrated with the direction of the organization and the lack of offensive rhythm, now wants to take his talents elsewhere.
If the Rockets decide to move him, his market will be a tough one to navigate. On one hand, Westbrook remains one of the most talented players in the sport. He can get to the rim when he wants and finish at a high level. There aren&rsquo;t many players who create as many threes or lobs as Westbrook does. He&rsquo;s still a triple-double machine, for whatever that&rsquo;s worth to you.
On the other hand, the lack of off-ball value really hinders his effectiveness in playoff situations. The Lakers flat-out ignored him during their second-round series whenever he didn&rsquo;t have the ball. He also failed to capitalize on advantage situations whenever the Lakers trapped James Harden -- a massive indictment on Westbrook&rsquo;s decision-making in high-leverage spots, though it&rsquo;s fair to note that Westbrook was trying to work himself into playoff shape after dealing with COVID and injuries.
Further complicating matters is Westbrook&rsquo;s age (32) and contract (three years, $132 million left). It&rsquo;s hard for teams to swallow that much money on the back-9 of Westbrook&rsquo;s career. But from a talent perspective, the Rockets will rightfully want a good young piece and more for a guy of Westbrook&rsquo;s status. In order for a deal to work, there will have to be some compromise on both sides.
Let&rsquo;s take a look at several potential suitors.&nbsp;

Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets are in a weird spot. They&rsquo;re clearly a bad team, but one with some useful vets and intriguing young talent that falls a tier (or two) below &ldquo;blue-chipper&rdquo; status. They&rsquo;re technically in position to land a high-profile youngster in this year&rsquo;s draft, but let&rsquo;s just say the merits of that distinction can be heavily debated.
In short: the Hornets are in position to make a move for a less-than-desirable star if they want to.&nbsp;
For a guy like Westbrook, who is still good enough to raise the floor of a team to playoff-level, and for a team like the Hornets that have little hope in nabbing a big name in free agency, a marriage could make some sense.
Starter Offer: Terry Rozier, Nicolas Batum
There was mild controversy around Rozier&rsquo;s acquisition last summer, though most of that was no fault of his own. The Hornets either failed or flat-out decided not to re-sign franchise cornerstone Kemba Walker, depending on who you talk to. Losing him hurt on and off the floor; losing him then immediately handing Rozier a three-year, $57 million deal&hellip; the optics didn&rsquo;t look great.&nbsp;
To Rozier&rsquo;s credit, he put together a solid season alongside Most Improved candidate Devonte&rsquo; Graham. Rozier averaged 18 points while shooting north of 40 percent from three on nearly seven attempts per contest. He also provided his usual brand of pesky defense at the point of attack. If the jumper proves to be real, he&rsquo;d be an ideal fit next to Harden as a secondary playmaker.
The Batum signing has mostly been a failure. Since signing his five-year, $120 million deal in the summer of 2016, Batum has waved between injuries and inconsistent play. At his best, he&rsquo;s a versatile forward capable of shooting, finishing, operating secondary pick-and-rolls and defending three positions credibly. It&rsquo;s just been difficult for him to put things together for extended stretches.
In Houston, he can enjoy easier looks playing off of the brilliance of Harden. Flanked by defenders like Robert Covington and PJ Tucker, Batum&rsquo;s defensive workload could also be a little lighter. A one-year flier on Batum could be a worthwhile gamble -- and we&rsquo;ve seen Contract-Year Batum before.
Last Ditch Offer: Terry Rozier, Cody Zeller, Malik Monk
If Batum isn&rsquo;t appealing, swapping him out for the Zeller/Monk combo could make things work. That may require the Rockets to throw in another piece -- Ben McLemore? Danuel House? -- depending on how confident the Hornets are in Monk moving forward.
Zeller has dealt with injury woes over the past three seasons, but has proven to be a reliable screener and lob threat when upright. Adding a screen-and-dive big back to Houston&rsquo;s arsenal would be a positive.&nbsp;
The jury remains out on Monk. He&rsquo;s a bucket-getter at his best, able to use a shifty handle and quick trigger to flow into pull-ups whenever he wants. The issue is that his shooting ability is more theoretical at this stage of his career. There&rsquo;s enough raw talent there to argue that a change of scenery would benefit him; maybe providing bench relief for a better team and occasionally playing off of Harden can lead to a mini-breakout.

Dallas Mavericks
The Luka Doncic-led Mavericks made their return to the postseason behind, statistically, the greatest offense in NBA history. Doncic pick-and-rolled his way into rim forays and stepback jimmies; Kristaps Porzingis pick-and-popped his way into triple after triple. Gunners like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Seth Curry thrived off of the open looks created by the Doncic-Porzingis tango.&nbsp;
The next step for Dallas is finding someone to take some on-ball pressure off of Doncic, which is where a Westbrook deal could make some sense for them. There&rsquo;s rightful concern about Westbrook&rsquo;s value and/or inactivity without the ball in his hands, as well as how Westbrook&rsquo;s contract could affect their eventual pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2021. The counter there is that Dallas shouldn&rsquo;t get in an all-out bidding war for Westbrook&rsquo;s services. Beyond that, Westbrook could likely be moved again next offseason, with a year less on his contract at that point, if they received word that Giannis was interested in joining.
First and Final Offer: Tim Hardaway Jr., Delon Wright, Dwight Powell
Hardaway Jr. is coming off his most efficient season as a pro, posting career highs in three-point percentage (39.8) and True Shooting percentage (58.1). With new head coach Stephen Silas looking to add more variety to Houston&rsquo;s offensive attack, having an off-ball mover like Hardaway Jr. could make them more dangerous in the half-court.
Wright had a smaller role than anticipated in his first year in Dallas, only starting five games and averaging a shade under 22 minutes a night. Still, he provided solid perimeter defense across multiple positions, and showcased some improved craft in pick-and-roll.&nbsp;
Wright pick-and-rolls (including passes) generated a little over 1.08 points per possession, per Synergy. Wright can slot in nicely alongside Harden or help anchor the second unit with Eric Gordon. There would be enough size for Houston to go with three-guard lineups with any three of Harden, Hardaway Jr., Gordon, or Wright if the situation called for it.
Powell is one of the more underrated bench bigs in the league, an elite roll option in ball screens and solid positional defender. There may be some hesitancy in taking on the remainder of his contract, especially with him coming off an Achilles injury, but I think it&rsquo;s fair to say that his deal is an easier pill to swallow than Westbrook&rsquo;s.&nbsp;

Indiana Pacers
The Pacers are in the suburbs of purgatory: good enough to not only make the playoffs, but to host a playoff series, but not good enough to make legitimate noise in the postseason. There is no capital-s star, though Domantas Sabonis comes the closest. The player that did occupy that role has dealt with injuries and is set to hit unrestricted free agency next summer. This may be the time for the Pacers to make a swing that could vault them into the next tier.
Starter Offer: Victor Oladipo, Jeremy Lamb, Goga Bitadze
Any offer from the Pacers would likely start with Oladipo, a recently-oft-injured-but-talented guard that may be <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-trade-rumors-possible-destinations-victor-oladipo-indiana-pacers">on his way out</a>. He may not be able to be the focal point of an offense at this point, but still has the driving and spot-up shooting skills necessary to operate as a secondary option. That, combined with his still-rugged perimeter defense, makes him an ideal fit next to Harden.
Lamb is a silky two-dribble attacker that can beat rotating defenses with pull-ups or tough finishes at the rim. He&rsquo;s also an active defender, if not an especially good one.&nbsp;
Goga Bitadze is an intriguing big prospect that didn&rsquo;t see much daylight last season. The former Serbian League MVP has enough shooting touch to feast off pick-and-pops, and he built a reputation overseas as a stout rim protector and shot blocker. The Pacers may not want to part with him, especially if the smoke around Myles Turner being on the block is true. If they&rsquo;re willing to move Bitadze, though, he&rsquo;d have a clear-cut path to playing time in Houston.
Last Ditch Offer: Myles Turner, Victor Oladipo, TJ Leaf
Turner is a good, albeit frustrating player. In theory, he&rsquo;s the type of 3-and-D center you want. Silky jumper that he launches into the freaking sun before it kisses through the net; a ridiculous rim protector that can swat shots from just about anywhere; enough of a handle and straight-line speed to pump-and-go against overeager defenders. Turner just hasn&rsquo;t managed to put it all together. That reality, combined with the emergency of Sabonis as the team&rsquo;s best player, and the presence of Bitadze makes a Turner move a more realistic outcome.
Leaf would be filler in a move like this. The shooting ability he flashed at UCLA hasn&rsquo;t really translated on the NBA level, and that&rsquo;s made it difficult for him to carve out consistent playing time to this point of his career.

Los Angeles Clippers
The clock is definitely ticking in Los Angeles.
Fresh off of an embarrassing playoff collapse, the Clippers now find themselves in a dangerous spot. Their title window is wide open for next season -- having Kawhi Leonard and Paul George as your top two will do that -- but both players have the ability to hit free agency in 2021. It would be an outright disaster if even one of them leaves considering the capital it took to bring them in last offseason. Changes are needed, and fast.
Starter Offer: Montrezl Harrell (S&amp;T), Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams
Making the money work in a deal like this is tough without including Leonard or George. It is possible, though, by utilizing a sign-and-trade with Montrezl Harrell, last year&rsquo;s Sixth Man of the Year. TradeNBA&rsquo;s trade machine allows you to give players custom contracts. I gave Harrell a 3-year, $57 million deal -- quick hat tip to this <a href="https://www.dangerc.art/contract-structures">NBA contract generator</a> -- to make things work.
(Also, can I just say that it&rsquo;s ridiculous that the Clippers had two players as finalists for the Sixth Man award? By definition, one of Harrell or Lou Williams had to be the seventh man, which would eliminate them from contention. Come on, man. The math just ain&rsquo;t mathin&rsquo;.)
Beverley remains one of the most annoying players in the league to dribble against. He&rsquo;s also turned himself into one heck of a shooter, draining 39.3 percent of his threes over the past five seasons.
Williams is a multi-time Sixth Man of the Year award winner, a slithery pick-and-roll guard that wins with a variety of shoulder, head and pump fakes. There&rsquo;s obvious regular-season value with him, though he&rsquo;s never really put it together in the postseason.&nbsp;
Last Ditch Offer: Paul George
Ideally, if the Clippers are going to make a move for Westbrook, it&rsquo;ll be to create a Big 3 with him, Leonard and George.&nbsp;
The Hail Mary here would be to flip George, who reportedly <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/disappointment-frustration-lack-of-chemistry-portrait-of-the-clippers-collapse-172338674.html">played a role</a> in the Clippers&rsquo; ruffled locker room last season. His playoff struggles have been a little overblown -- people have really lost sight of what he was able to do in Indiana, and an argument can be made that he was OKC&rsquo;s best playoff performer during his stretch there -- but they can&rsquo;t completely be ignored.&nbsp;
If the Clippers prioritize the playmaking and rim pressure that Westbrook -- and they might, considering Leonard reportedly <a href="https://nba.nbcsports.com/2020/10/19/report-kawhi-leonard-wants-clippers-to-add-point-guard/">wants some help</a> in that regard -- there&rsquo;s room for a swap. That may require the Rockets to toss in an extra piece like House, but it&rsquo;s easy to see the on-court benefit from both sides.&nbsp;
Westbrook could help push the pace, create lob opportunities for Ivica Zubac, and take some of the creation burden off of Leonard. George can flow off of pindowns and attack bent defenses in Houston, or float around the perimeter to create driving lanes for Harden, Gordon and others.

Breaking down possible trade destinations for Russell Westbrook

For this 2020 mock draft, rather than projecting what each team will do, I will put myself in the shoes of each team&rsquo;s decision-maker and make my owns. In a draft without any clear-cut franchise player and a lot of parity toward the top, I will avoid simply selecting &ldquo;the best player available.&rdquo; Talent is not the only ingredient in the recipe for success. Oftentimes, selecting the most talented player is the right move, but sometimes finding a player who can fit seamlessly and complement the existing talent is more valuable to a franchise. With that said, I will prioritize players who, I think, will help each team take a step in the right direction toward long-term success.&nbsp;
The Minnesota Timberwolves were the big winners at the 2020 NBA draft lottery, obtaining the No. 1 overall pick. The Golden State Warriors, Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls round out the top-four. There will undoubtedly be plenty of rumors circulating in the coming weeks as to what these teams are looking to do, and many of these will be smokescreens leaked by the teams. Here's what I would do if I were calling the shots for each front office that secured a top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft:
1. Minnesota Timberwolves&nbsp;
Decision-maker: Gersson Rosas
After making a few moves during my first year as president of basketball operations, we have a promising young core that's centered around big man Karl-Anthony Towns, lead guard D&rsquo;Angelo Russell and young wings Malik Beasley and Jarrett Culver. We just won the lottery and now have the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. What do we do now?
Most people will suggest that we select shooting guard Anthony Edwards from the University of Georgia, as he has the most upside in this year&rsquo;s draft. Despite Edwards possessing an incredible amount of potential, I have some concerns with the maturity of his game. In addition to those concerns, we recently acquired Beasley prior to the trade deadline. In 14 games with us, he averaged 20.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in 33.1 minutes, while shooting 42 percent from three-point range. I have high hopes for the 24-year-old and I do not want to let him go. If we draft Edwards, I fear that Beasley will be as good as gone. We are able to give Malik a qualifying offer this offseason, making him a restricted free agent. I think we should pass on Edwards, lock Beasley up on a long-term deal and pencil him in as our starting shooting guard for the next handful of years or longer.
Edwards is out because of Beasley, James Wiseman doesn&rsquo;t make sense because we have Towns, and I don&rsquo;t think LaMelo Ball would co-exist well with Russell.&nbsp;
How about Obi Toppin from Dayton or Deni Avdija from Maccabi Tel Aviv?&nbsp;
Yes.
Toppin, this year's National College Player of the Year, is an exciting, high-flying power forward who can also stretch the floor. Paired with Towns, Toppin would give Russell two great options of guys that can roll, pop, trail or finish at the rim (and way above it). He doesn&rsquo;t answer our defensive woes, but offensively we would be such a dynamic team. He would be able to step in and contribute right away and my confidence level that he&rsquo;s at least going to be a good, if not great, player is extremely high.
Avdija, the Israeli point forward, would also be a great fit for us. He could play the three or four and give us a lot of lineup flexibility. He has contributed at a high level at such a young age, so I think he could help us right away while also possessing some long-term upside. I don&rsquo;t like him quite as much as Toppin, but he should be in consideration for sure.
Is the No. 1 pick too high to take either of these two players?
Maybe.&nbsp;
Let&rsquo;s do this: Let&rsquo;s put the pick on the trade market and simultaneously tell the world that if we keep the pick, we will use it on the most talented player: Anthony Edwards. Hopefully, that tactic will drive up our pick&rsquo;s trade value for a team looking to trade up to get Edwards, and perhaps we can move back to select Toppin or Avdija, while also receiving additional assets. However, if we fail to secure a decent offer, let&rsquo;s not fall into the hype; let&rsquo;s take the guy who fits and allows us to continue what we&rsquo;re already building.&nbsp;

2. Golden State Warriors
Decision-maker: Bob Myers
We have made five NBA-Finals appearances in six years and have won it all three times. This season was an off year due to injuries, but Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green should be good to go for the 2020-21 season. Although we&rsquo;ll likely be among the top teams in the league next year, we were able to secure the No. 2 pick in the draft and now we have an interesting decision to make.
With Toppin off the board, that leaves the top-rated guards Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball, as well as top big man James Wiseman, still available. We need to add someone who can be a building block for the long-term, but also someone who can mesh well with the players we have right now so that they can help us compete for another championship. Many are suggesting that we select either Ball or Edwards, but I&rsquo;m not so sure that&rsquo;s the right move. Let me explain...
Our trio of Steph, Klay and Draymond have been among the most successful in NBA history. Each of them are comfortable and settled into their roles and because of that, I&rsquo;m very hesitant to do anything that could potentially throw a wrench into our well-oiled machine. If we were to bring in a ball-dominant guard like Ball or Edwards, it could really affect our current guys&rsquo; roles. It would certainly decrease Draymond&rsquo;s value within our offense because it would take the ball out of his hands, limiting his playmaking ability. It would also force us to play Klay at the three a lot, which I would like to avoid. 
On top of the concerns on the offensive end, it could also be a recipe for disaster on the defensive end. Edwards has all the physical tools to be a good defender, but he has not shown a commitment on that side of the ball yet. LaMelo has not shown much interest on the defensive end either; even if he did, his physical limitations will be an issue on the defensive end. I&rsquo;d be very concerned about pairing Curry with either of those players. The thought of those backcourts trying to defend Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers, or James Harden and Russell Westbrook of the Houston Rockets makes me feel uneasy. I don&rsquo;t think adding Edwards or Ball would be the right moves for us.
Wiseman from Memphis is a 7-foot-1 center who is incredibly agile for a player his size and has an underrated skill level. He could step in and serve as our defensive anchor right off the bat, using his size and athleticism to provide us with some much-needed rim protection. He could fulfill a relatively simple but valuable role on the offensive end, as we could utilize him as a rim runner, pick-and-roll target and lob finisher. He&rsquo;s also capable of hitting an open shot, which could help with spacing. Long-term, I even think he could be a guy who could stretch the floor out to NBA three-point range. We could gradually increase Wiseman&rsquo;s offensive role over time as he develops and our stars age. 
He&rsquo;ll never be the toughest guy on the floor, but he&rsquo;s big, talented and smart. In fact, he graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA and speaks Mandarin Chinese. Of course, Wiseman&rsquo;s talent is what is most appealing, but I also like that his low-key personality would allow him to fit in on our team without ruffling feathers. Also, with his high-level intelligence, he should be able to pick up some of the more complicated schemes in the NBA without a problem.&nbsp;
James Wiseman is our guy.
3. Charlotte Hornets&nbsp;
Decision-maker: Mitch Kupchak
I&rsquo;m aware that there are many LaMelo Ball supporters who have him as the highest-rated player in this year&rsquo;s draft and assume that he is a sure-fire star. I am certainly intrigued by Ball&rsquo;s talent and I do think he has star potential, but Anthony Edwards takes the prize of being the highest-upside player in this year&rsquo;s draft, in my opinion. He had an inconsistent freshman year, but I saw him put on a show at the Maui Invitational in November, having scored 33 points in a half against Michigan State -- a display that showed his unparalleled talent. 
At 6-foot-5, Edwards possesses a strong and athletic frame with the ability to create and knock down shots from all over the floor. He needs to learn to play and become more disciplined, which is what is holding him back from being labeled as the clear-cut top player in this draft class, but if we&rsquo;re able to get him at No. 3, it&rsquo;s a no brainer.&nbsp;
With the emergence of Devonte&rsquo; Graham last season, we were forced to pair him with Terry Rozier, giving us a very small backcourt since both are listed at 6-foot-1. Adding Edwards would allow us to put Rozier in a more appropriate role of a high-energy, assertive, scoring combo guard who we could bring off of the bench. Our young core would begin to take real shape with Edwards and Graham starting in the backcourt alongside our young forwards, P.J. Washington and Miles Bridges, who have shown promise. We will need to continue to develop and add some additional pieces, but I&rsquo;d be happy with the direction we&rsquo;re heading in if we select Edwards with the third pick.&nbsp;
Anthony Edwards is my pick.

4. Chicago Bulls
Decision-maker: Arturas Karnisovas
I was just hired recently after working as Tim Connelly&rsquo;s right-hand man for years with the Denver Nuggets. There, we were able to build a good team primarily through the draft. I will try to replicate some of the things that we did in Denver that led us to success, but luckily for me, I have inherited a team in Chicago that already has good young talent in place. Zach LaVine has developed into a legitimate scoring wing, as he averaged 25.5 points per game this season and he&rsquo;s only 25 years old. We have quality young bigs in Wendell Carter Jr. and Lauri Markkanen, who are only 21 and 23 years old, respectively. We also have 20-year-old Coby White, who had a terrific rookie year (as he averaged 13.1 points per game). In addition to the talent we already have, we were fortunate enough to get the No. 4 pick in this draft. Which prospect would help our group get to the next level?
I&rsquo;m intrigued by Israeli point forward Deni Avdija and he&rsquo;d fit with our team, but I think the best pick here for us is LaMelo Ball. A natural playmaker at 6-foot-7, we could put the ball in LaMelo&rsquo;s hands and let him work his magic. With his uncanny playmaking ability, our young talent should flourish around him. LaVine could continue to have the green-light as a scorer and we could have White in as a scoring guard rather than trying to convert him into a traditional point guard. Ball could have a real nice two-man game with Markkanen, who at 7-feet is an effective pick-and-pop option. Markkanen&rsquo;s ability to shoot the ball from outside would also assist in giving Ball the necessary freedom to make plays for himself and his teammates. I think this would be a perfect fit.
Our pick is LaMelo Ball.
