Back in July, the NBA announced that this upcoming season would include the inaugural in-season tournament. The rules and dates for the NBA Cup were announced, and the overall response was&hellip; bleh. 
Some fans feel that the tournament is just a way to generate more TV time and money for the league. While the tournament will certainly bring in those things, let&rsquo;s look at the optics. The NBA Cup should lead to more basketball being watched, higher-stakes games, and potentially more players and fans caring about the regular season. All of that sounds good for everyone involved, especially the fans.&nbsp;
Fans have voiced their frustrations about the NBA&rsquo;s regular season for years, claiming that between the lack of effort from players and load-management concerns, the regular season&rsquo;s sense of importance has been dwindling. This tournament could be a major step in reshaping that perception. 
Players who would usually take a game off for rest or as a precautionary measure may now feel encouraged to play in order to help their team advance in the tournament. Players are also being rewarded financially throughout the tournament, with players on the winning team of the NBA Cup championship even earning $500,000 each. If nothing else will get a player to play harder, money will.&nbsp;
This tournament will also lead to top teams and stars facing off more often, which is in the league's best interest. For example, look at Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. Through bad injury luck and scheduling quirks since they were in different conferences in recent years, the pair have not faced off since the 2018 NBA Finals. This tournament will allow the league to put its best teams and athletes on display and have them face off far more often.
The tournament deserves a chance to remedy the complaints that fans have had over the last few years. Major League Baseball recently took a chance with their implementation of the pitch clock, and it has proven to be a massive success, as numbers for baseball are up across the board.&nbsp;
This wouldn't be the first time in recent years that the NBA has won over their once-skeptical fans with a unique idea. Fans were losing interest in the All-Star game, so the NBA changed the format of the game entirely in 2020, making each quarter its own mini-game for charity and then implementing the target score. Fans were encouraged by the effort, but felt it would not pan out well.
Boy, were they wrong.
The 2021 All-Star game is regarded by many as the best ever. The target score made the fourth quarter incredibly competitive, with the world&rsquo;s best going at it head-to-head. It was everything any sport could want from their All-Star game, creating timeless moments that will be rewatched for years to come. 
The Play-In Tournament is another example of an idea that was initially hated by fans before they eventually came around after seeing it in action.
Evan Wasch, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball strategy and analytics, told Basketball News last year that these recent successes gave the league confidence to continue trying new things.
&ldquo;[It gives us] confidence and, hopefully, credibility in the marketplace," Wasch said. "These ideas are not hatched overnight and then implemented. I&rsquo;ve been with the NBA for almost 11 years and the concept of the Play-In Tournament even predates my time with the NBA, so it was a long time in the making in terms of crafting the right proposal, the right timing, the right format. Same with the All-Star changes; that was a partnership with our Players Association. Chris Paul, the union president, is on our competition committee and had a bunch of suggestions for how we could improve competition there. 
"These things build up over time as we discuss them, which ultimately makes the product better when we do implement them because they&rsquo;re thought through so effectively. We hope with our stakeholders and fans, that the credibility that comes with successful innovation sticks around as we [implement the] in-season tournament.&rdquo;
The in-season tournament begins on November 3 and will conclude with the championship game held in Las Vegas on December 9.

Why the NBA's new in-season tournament should be great

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) &mdash; Tyrin Lawrence knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer as the Vanderbilt Commodores snapped an 11-game skid against its in-state rival by upsetting sixth-ranked Tennessee 66-65 on Wednesday night.
Students rushed the court and joined the Commodores (12-12, 5-6) in celebrating easily the biggest win in coach Jerry Stackhouse&rsquo;s fourth season.
Tennessee (19-5, 8-2) had a chance to finish off the win after Olivier Nkamhoua knocked down a 15-foot jumper with 50 seconds left for a 65-63 lead. Liam Robbins missed a turnaround jumper with 27 seconds for Vanderbilt, and Zakai Zeigler grabbed the rebound.
Lawrence finished with a team-high 19 points. Robbins added 14 and nine rebounds, and Jordan Wright had 12.
Santiago Vescovi and Tyreke Key each had 14 to lead Tennessee. Nkamhoua and Julian Phillips added 10 apiece.
NO. 2 HOUSTON 80, TULSA 42
HOUSTON (AP) &mdash; Marcus Sasser scored 25 points and had five 3-pointers, Emanuel Sharp added 13 points and Houston earned its fifth straight win.
Sasser scored 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting in the first half as the Cougars (23-2, 11-1 American Athletic Conference) built a 46-18 halftime lead. The senior guard had the first 12 points in a 24-2 run that gave Houston a 31-12 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half.
Tim Dalger scored 13 points, and Sam Griffin added 11 points for Tulsa (5-18, 1-11).
NO. 3 ALABAMA 97, FLORIDA 69
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) &mdash; Brandon Miller scored 24 points and made 4 of 8 3-pointers to lead No. 3 Alabama over Florida.
The Crimson Tide (21-3, 11-0 Southeastern Conference) raced to a 29-point halftime lead against the Gators (13-11, 6-5), who had knocked off then-No. 2 Tennessee a week earlier.
Miller added nine rebounds and three assists for the Tide. Mark Sears made 4 of 6 3s and scored 19 for Alabama, which buried 15 shots from long range. Jahvon Quinerly had 11 points.
Colin Castleton led Florida with 29 points and 10 rebounds. He accounted for 13 of his team&rsquo;s 23 in the first half and made 11 of 14 free throws. Riley Kugel added 15 points and Will Richard scored 11.
WEST VIRGINIA 76, NO. 11 IOWA STATE 71
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) &mdash; Kedrian Johnson tied a career high with 22 points, and West Virginia held off Iowa State.
Emmitt Mathews added a season-high 20 points for the Mountaineers (15-9, 4-7 Big 12), who have won five of seven to get their season moving in the right direction after they dropped five in a row during one stretch.
Jaren Holmes led the Cyclones (16-7, 7-4) with 18 points. Freshman Tamin Lipsey had a season-high 16 points and Caleb Grill added 13.
NO. 14 BAYLOR 82, OKLAHOMA 72
WACO, Texas (AP) &mdash; Keyonte George had 23 points, Adam Flagler scored 20 and big man Johnathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua made a couple of key 3-pointers as Baylor held on to beat Oklahoma.
Langston Love added 19 points for Baylor (18-6, 7-4 Big 12), which has won eight of nine overall since losing its first three league games.
The Sooners (12-12, 2-9) lost their sixth consecutive conference game, the last three since a still-hard-to-explain 93-69 win over then-No. 2 Alabama in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
Grant Sherfield had 15 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Sooners, and Milos Uzan added 11 points. Otega Oweh and Joe Bamisile both scored 10.
NO. 20 PROVIDENCE 74, GEORGETOWN 62
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) &mdash; Bryce Hopkins scored 17 points and Providence won for the fourth time in five games.
Devin Carter and Ed Croswell had 12 points apiece as the Friars (18-6, 10-3 Big East). Noah Locke added 11 points, shooting 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
Bradley Ezewiro paced last-place Georgetown (6-19, 1-13) with 19 points and Primo Spears added 18. Brandon Murray scored 16 as the Hoyas dropped their fourth straight.
NO. 23 CREIGHTON 75, SETON HALL 62
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) &mdash; Baylor Scheierman had 19 points and nine rebounds, Ryan Nembhard added 15 on 6-of-7 shooting and dished out four assists, and Creighton fended off a feisty Seton Hall.
Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 13 points and Arthur Kaluma had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bluejays (16-8, 10-3 Big East).
Seton Hall (15-10, 8-6) opened up the second half with an Al-Amir Dawes 3-pointer to take the lead before Kalkbrenner quickly tied things up at 42. Tyrese Samuel drilled a 3-pointer in the corner to give Seton Hall a 49-43 lead &ndash; its largest of the game &ndash; with 16:49 left.
Dawes had 19 points, Samuel had 11 points and Kadary Richmond added 10 points for Seton Hall.
NO. 25 SAN DIEGO STATE 63, UTAH STATE 61
LOGAN, Utah (AP) &mdash; Matt Bradley scored 18 points and San Diego State held on to beat Utah State.
Bradley made his first seven shots and went 7 of 9 from the field overall to help keep the Aztecs (19-5, 10-2 Mountain West Conference) atop the conference standings. Jaedon LeDee had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Micah Parrish added 12 points for San Diego State. The Aztecs&rsquo; top three scorers grabbed a combined 22 rebounds.
Steven Ashworth had 18 points, six assists and five rebounds for Utah State (19-6, 8-4). Taylor Funk added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Aggies, who lost at home for just the second time this season.&nbsp;

Vanderbilt’s late three-pointer stuns No. 6 Tennessee 66-65

When defending its national championship last season, Baylor lost a top newcomer to an injury in the first scrimmage. A lingering foot injury eventually shut down a leading scorer, and the player known as &ldquo;Everyday Jon&rdquo; suffered a devastating knee injury.
Through all of that, after the departure already of a talented trio of guards from the title team, the Bears still won a share of their second consecutive Big 12 regular-season crown and were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They overcame a 25-point deficit in the second half of their second-round game not far from home before falling in overtime to the eventual national champion.
Even with another restructured roster, Scott Drew goes into his 20th season as the Baylor coach with his fifth-ranked Bears the preseason Big 12 favorite.
&ldquo;Really like the returning upperclassmen,&rdquo; Drew said. &ldquo;The new guys are really bought in, and really great additions. The chemistry has been tremendous, and our staff really enjoys going to practice every day, working with our guys because they want to get better. Couldn&rsquo;t ask for more.&rdquo;
Leading scorer Adam Flagler (13.8 points per game) and big man Flo Thamba (6.2 points, 5.6 rebounds in 20 minutes per game) are the only returning starters. Guards LJ Cryer and Langston Love were cleared for practice, though post Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua is still recovering from surgery to repair multiple torn ligaments in his left knee.&nbsp;
The Bears added transfer forwards Jalen Bridges (West Virginia) and Caleb Lohner (BYU), and their highest-ranked recruit ever: Keyonte George, a Texas kid who was a five-star guard at IMG Academy in Florida and was picked as the preseason Big 12 freshman of the year.
Cryer was in and out of the lineup because of his surgically repaired right foot, but still led the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) when he played his last game in mid-February. Drew expects Love, the 6-foot-5 guard who tore his ACL in the first scrimmage before last season, to have a big impact on the program though he will need some time to get back to game speed.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a tremendous competitor,&rdquo; Drew said. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a connector. He brings people together &mdash; everybody, upperclassman, new players, staff have such respect for him.&rdquo;
FLAGLER ON POINT
The versatile Flagler is set to take over at point guard.
&ldquo;We all know he&rsquo;s a great shooter, scorer, but he&rsquo;s going to have an opportunity to show that he can run a team,&rdquo; Drew said. &ldquo;He can play on and off the ball, but he really takes care of the ball and he really does a great job pitching ahead in transition. ... Guys like playing with someone who moves the ball like he does.&rdquo;
GUARD PLAY
During their championship season, the Bears had the selfless trio of standout guards Jared Butler, Davion Mitchell and MaCio Teague. Baylor now has another pretty talented backcourt with Cryer, Flagler, George, Love and Dale Bonner, the transfer from Division II Fairmont State who turned into a key rotation player last season.
ONE AND DONE
Baylor lost a pair of one-and-done players, with forward Jeremy Sochan and guard Kendall Brown being NBA draft picks after their freshman seasons. Point guard James Akinjo was also there only one season after being a graduate transfer from Arizona.
OH CANADA
All the newcomers were part of the Bears&rsquo; summer trip to Canada for GLOBL Jam, where they represented the United States and advanced to the finals after upsetting host Canada.
&ldquo;I just feel like we came together as one early,&rdquo; said George, who averaged 22.8 points in those games. &ldquo;So we&rsquo;re better than a lot of college teams right now.&rdquo;
TITLE REMATCH
Baylor will be in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Dec. 2 to play second-ranked Gonzaga in a rematch of the 2021 NCAA championship game that the Bears won 86-70. After three consecutive home games to open the season, they go to Las Vegas to play No. 18 Virginia on Nov. 18, then No. 8 UCLA or No. 23 Illinois two days after that. Their Big 12 opener is at Iowa State on New Year&rsquo;s Eve.&nbsp;

No. 5 Baylor preseason Big 12 favorite for Drew’s 20th season

As the NBA season has wound down and funneled into fewer and fewer games, I've had the chance to dive deeper into the grassroots circuit and hone in more on what this next season of college hoops could look like.
I am irrationally excited about the Baylor Bears coming into the 2022-23 NCAA season.
After a second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament to eventual finalist North Carolina, the Bears are in a state of flux. <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/draft/2022-nba-mock-draft/players/jeremy-sochan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeremy Sochan</a> and <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/draft/2022-nba-mock-draft/players/kendall-brown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kendall Brown</a>, two projected first-round picks, are in the <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/draft" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 NBA Draft</a> pool. Starting point guard James Akinjo, who led the Big 12 with 5.8 assists per game this past season, announced he'd also enter the draft and hire an agent. Starting forward Matthew Mayer also entered, and recently entered the transfer portal. And finally, leading scorer Adam Flagler too entered the draft, although he remains NCAA eligible as he tests the waters of his draft stock.
Needless to say, things are changing in Waco, Texas! Baylor big man Flo Thamba will return for a fifth year and Jonathan Tchamwa-Tchatchoua is coming back from the knee injury that sidelined him late in conference play. LJ Cryer missed the NCAA Tournament and end of last year with a foot injury, and should step into an even larger role as a third-year player.
Five of the top six in minutes played on the team last year might not be back in the rotation, which is equally jarring and exciting. With that being said, open minutes means new opportunities!
Where things start for me in my intrigue is Keyonte George. The five-star shooting guard out of IMG Academy has a legitimate chance to be the best guard to play at Baylor, which is high praise considering the wealth of NBA talent that's flowed through head coach Scott Drew's tenure.
George is an effortless shooter off a variety of movements. He's comfortable off the ball and moves well as a cutter. His pull-up and shot creation are routinely cash for him. George's handle shifts defenders with guile, and he can maneuver his way through tight spaces with ease.

He has real pop around the rim, and some of the finishes through contact he pulls off are WILD. So often, we talk about three-level scorers and look at guys who can handle and operate behind the arc and in the mid-range with lesser efficacy at the rim; George is a plus pretty much anywhere on the court, which makes him a remarkably tough guard.

He can capably run offense, setting up incredibly well out of pick-and-roll situations with pocket passes, dump-offs and a really impressive lob game as well.

George is a stout defender at the point of attack with active hands, and routinely will make the right plays off the ball as well. He's a tremendous all-around player with a real opportunity to make waves as a freshman. His shot creation next year is going to be a joy to watch against some of the best defenses in college basketball.
Another one of the major reasons I'm excited for Baylor is Langston Love's return to the court! Love was the 35th-ranked recruit in the 2021 high school class, but missed the entirety of his freshman season with an ACL tear. It would be unfair to expect him to come back without rust, but it's good to get a reminder of just how good Love is when healthy.
While it'd be tough to crack the starting lineup given who's returning, Love's shotmaking and creation (a theme for Baylor) could be a boon.

Love has a really explosive drive game that allows him to get into the paint, but he tends to rely more on speed rather than his handle &mdash; which isn't neccesarily a bad thing &mdash; but will likely be there for him less in college.

Watch that first clip. Love does a great job getting into the paint, but that's the sort of play where I really want to see him take a hang dribble and a momentary pause off the screen. He doesn't typically see skip passes from here &mdash; which again, not an indictment &mdash; but it's where he's at as a playmaker right now. There's a lot of room to grow with reps.
When he gets an ideal lane or angle, Love can collapse a defense, but I like what he can do operating on the second side of actions more. Getting involved in an empty-corner action, using pistol exchanges to get him open looks and getting the most out of his shooting gravity and straight-line speed are where a lot of his best reads come from as a playmaker. He's so solid at hitting backline cutters from the middle of the floor.

As mentioned, the creation is what stands out with this Baylor squad.
Up and down the roster, there are players who can dribble, shoot and make the right plays.
Cryer was one of the best shooters on volume in basketball last season, canning 46.8% of his threes (5.8 per game). Flagler was a 38.7% shooter on 6.3 attempts per game last season.
Baylor is a team that's thrived upon having multiple shot-creators over the last few seasons, and the Bears have fully leaned into that identity headed into the upcoming year. As different as this team will be made up, its apparent strengths could make for some incredible offensive ball.
One of the bigger questions is the defense. While Love and George are both capable defenders to be sure, they're a significant downshift in size from Sochan and Brown. With Mayer out of the picture as well, things get murky on the wing.
Baylor added Caleb Lohner, a starter at BYU last year, via the transfer portal. The 6-foot-8 forward showed some ability to play defense out on the perimeter, although seems much more adept in help and as the low man. It'll be interesting to see how he factors in.
The Bears also added West Virginia transfer Jalen Bridges, who brings a vital skill set and versatility to Baylor and seems to be a likely starter (started all 33 games for the Mountaineers last season).
I was really intrigued by Bridges as a freshman, but last year's WVU team was a tough to evaluate contextually. After a 13-2 start, the team went 3-15 the rest of the way. The defense was average, but pretty awful by Bob Huggins' standards, and the offense was among the worst in the country. Bridges' efficiency dropped without much of an increase in usage, which was odd and a bit discouraging. Yet, with a new team and alongside better offensive talent, I think there's a chance Bridges really pops as a player &mdash; but much of it will be determined by how his shot falls.
Bridges has good size at 6-7 with a sizable wingspan and solid instincts. He has some really good moments both on and off the ball with active hands, but finding consistency on that end will be key for him and for Baylor.
This Baylor team has a new look, a retooled roster and a bright future this season if things really click.

A retooled Baylor team could have a lot of upside and reason for excitement headed into a new season, writes Mark Schindler.

Why the new-look Baylor Bears could bring excitement in 2022-23

On Tuesday night, the seventh-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves found themselves in the NBA Play-In Tournament despite having a four-game lead over the Los Angeles Clippers, a 10-game lead over the New Orleans Pelicans and a 12-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs.&nbsp;
While the Wolves took care of business by beating the Clippers to secure the No. 7 seed and a date with the No. 2 seed Memphis Grizzlies, some people around the NBA feel that they had already done enough during the regular season to earn their playoff spot (given their double-digit lead over the Pelicans and Spurs).
If a team has a large enough lead in the standings, should it be exempt from the Play-In Tournament? Some NBA personnel have asked the league office to consider this change going forward.
Evan Wasch, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball strategy and analytics, acknowledged that this tweak is something that the league will discuss with the Board of Governors and National Basketball Players Association this offseason.
&ldquo;I would say that the league office's perspective is that it's working incredibly well in its current format, but we've heard suggestions from teams or others that some tweaks could be considered,&rdquo; Wasch told reporters on a Zoom call last week. &ldquo;For example, that we should bring back the trigger that we had in the [Orlando Bubble] Play-In, whereby the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds would have to be within a certain number of games of No. 7 and No. 8 in order to trigger the Play-In. There are pros and cons to that.&rdquo;
When the Play-In Tournament was introduced during the NBA Bubble in Orlando, such a scenario was only necessary if the ninth seed was within four games of the No. 8 seed. Due to this trigger in the Bubble, the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic didn't have to compete in a Play-In because they had a six-game lead over the ninth-seeded Charlotte Hornets.
The NBA has yet to make the Play-In Tournament a permanent addition to the postseason. Wasch explained that the league office wanted to see how the tournament would fare during a traditional 82-game season.
&ldquo;We approved it on a one-year basis as a trial,&rdquo; Wasch said. &ldquo;What we wanted to do is learn how it would impact the regular season as well as the playoff competition, and then we&rsquo;ll go back to our Board of Governors and Players Association to see if any tweaks are warranted.&rdquo;
Other changes have been suggested as well, such as changing &ldquo;how the top seeds are assigned their playoff opponent.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We've heard that perhaps it's actually a disadvantage now to be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed because a team could get hot through the Play-In to earn the No. 7 or No. 8 seed and then put those top seeds at a disadvantage. So we should consider things like pick-your-opponent models that would make it even more attractive to be the No. 1 or No. 2 seeds,&rdquo; Wasch said. &ldquo;As I said, the league office&rsquo;s view is that it&rsquo;s working well in its current format, but we&rsquo;ll certainly have that discussion with the stakeholders I mentioned this offseason.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The possibility of expanding the Play-In Tournament to include more teams &ldquo;is not currently on the table,&rdquo; according to Wasch.
"The core of what we were trying to accomplish with the Play-In was driving regular-season competition,&rdquo; Wasch said. &ldquo;We use the word 'tiers' a lot to describe what that means. There's now a tier of the top-four teams, each of which get home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. There&rsquo;s a 5-6 tier, which gives teams a guaranteed playoff berth. There&rsquo;s a 7-8 tier, which gives teams two opportunities to win a game in the Play-In. And, of course, there&rsquo;s the 9-10 tier that gives teams a shot to win two in a row to get in the playoffs.&nbsp;
&ldquo;So, as we think about expanding, you just have to think about how you can create incremental benefits at each part of the standings so that a team always looks at the standings and says, &lsquo;I want to be one or two or three spots higher,&rsquo; because that&rsquo;s what drives that regular-season competition. I think our view is that if you expand that Play-In field too deeply, you lose some of that because now there's too much of a backstop for a struggling team to be 11th, 12th or 13th and still in the Play-In. We do want to maintain some of that competitiveness in the regular season to say that you have to reach some level of performance to have that playoff opportunity. So, again, it's something that we can certainly look at, but it&rsquo;s not on the table at the moment.&rdquo;
Wasch says that the success of the Play-In Tournament has &ldquo;heavily&rdquo; influenced the league&rsquo;s thinking when it comes to implementing other new ideas such as a midseason tournament.
"It's no secret that we've been focused on the potential implementation of an in-season tournament for many years. As Adam [Silver] said in his press conference, it&rsquo;s something that we continue to look at,&rdquo; Wasch said. &ldquo;In particular, we look at the Play-In as a great case study in how changes to the competition format can not just create exciting new competition (in this case, the Play-In games themselves), but also elevate the focus, prominence and engagement of other games in the regular-season schedule that otherwise may have had lesser interest. As we think about things like an in-season tournament, we think it's not just about any tournament games that we would implement, but how it would bolster different parts of our regular-season schedule to create a higher level of fan engagement and create more touch points with our fans throughout the year, having that competition of consequence (which we know is what the marketplace is really looking for).&nbsp;
&ldquo;So, where we're at now is that this is not [happening] in the immediate future &mdash; it&rsquo;s not something that we&rsquo;ll be doing next season &mdash; but we have been discussing with our Board of Governors and Players Association whether it&rsquo;s something to look at for the future, with the Play-In as a great case study for how to build a new property.&rdquo;
While fans were initially unsure about some of these recent innovations &mdash; such as the Play-In Tournament and the changes to the All-Star Game &mdash; they eventually became big hits.&nbsp;
&ldquo;[It gives us] confidence and, hopefully, credibility in the marketplace," Wasch said. "These ideas are not hatched overnight and then implemented. I&rsquo;ve been with the NBA for almost 11 years and the concept of the Play-In Tournament even predates my time with the NBA, so it was a long time in the making in terms of crafting the right proposal, the right timing, the right format. Same with the All-Star changes; that was a partnership with our Players Association. Chris Paul, the union president, is on our competition committee and had a bunch of suggestions for how we could improve competition there.
"These things build up over time as we discuss them, which ultimately makes the product better when we do implement them because they&rsquo;re thought through so effectively. We hope with our stakeholders and fans, that the credibility that comes with successful innovation sticks around as we look at future changes around season structure, including in-season tournaments.&rdquo;

The second day of the 2022 NCAA tournament featured some slugfests, some blowouts, as well as a First Four team surviving another day. The Round of 32 is now completely locked-in, and we&rsquo;ll also take a peek at the must-watch matchups for Saturday.&nbsp;
UPSET ALERT&nbsp;
West Region: 11-seed Notre Dame defeats 6-seed Alabama 78-64
Alabama in recent seasons has had a strong program, with a number of players in the conversation for the NBA draft. This year the Crimson Tide&rsquo;s season has been a bit of a roller coaster, including a major win over arguably the best team in college basketball, Gonzaga, but also key SEC and non-conference losses that show in their 19-13 record coming into this game. Notre Dame had their fair share of ups and downs as well, but came into this first round matchup with momentum off their First Four double-OT win against Rutgers. The upset potential was apparent, and the Fighting Irish delivered behind a huge game from Cormac Ryan. The junior guard finished with a season-high 29 points, well above his 9.2 PPG average. Ryan has been coming on strong for the Irish with 20 and 16 points in their last two games respectively. Thanks to the efforts of Ryan and impressive freshman wing Blake Wesley &mdash; he scored 18 &mdash; Notre Dame moved on to play third-seeded Texas Tech in the second round.
Midwest Region: 11-seed Iowa State defeats 6-seed LSU 59-54
These were two teams with similar records that had similar patterns to their seasons &mdash; they both started the year with 12 game winning streaks that went through Christmas. However, playing in two of the best conferences in the country in the SEC and Big 12, both teams took their lumps through the remainder of the season. Although Iowa State took an 11-point lead around the 7-minute mark in the second half, LSU made an 11-1 run that brought the game within one point with under two minutes remaining. Iowa State pulled out the low scoring win with Tyrese Hunter being the team's major difference maker, dropping 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc. The freshman guard&rsquo;s clutch shooting clinic included two late threes that helped Iowa State pull away from the Tigers at the end. Hunter&rsquo;s 5 steals also led a stingy Cyclones defense that recorded 15 total. Iowa State&rsquo;s victory means they advance to the second round to take on third-seeded Wisconsin on Sunday.

BEST GAMES OF THE DAY
Midwest Region
No. 10 seed Miami defeats No. 7 seed USC 68-66
This matchup was tightly contested throughout the first 15 minutes, until Miami began to break the game open and took a 13-point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half. USC&rsquo;s offense grew stagnant, and the Hurricanes took advantage with a 31-20 lead at halftime. However, the Trojans came fighting back to begin the second half with two threes and a fast break layup from Isaiah Mobley (he finished with 11 points) to bring them within one. From this point it was a back and forth battle that favored Miami, yet USC would manage a big basket to keep it close &mdash; USC was down by seven points with 45 seconds left in the game. A Doug Peterson three, a Miami out-of-bounds call, and then another Peterson three brought the Trojans back within one, with 25.3 seconds left in the game.
After free throws from both teams, it was tied at 66 in the final moments. Charlie Moore drove to the lane and attempted a contested layup, which earned him a foul call. Moore stepped to the line and knocked down two free throws to seal the game. A halfcourt heave at the buzzer almost fell for Doug Peterson &mdash; he ended the game with a valiant effort of 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Miami&rsquo;s Isaiah Wong led the Hurricanes with 22 points while dealing with foul trouble and Moore followed with 16 points. Miami will see second-seeded Auburn in the second round.&nbsp;
South Region
No. 4 seed Illinois defeats No. 13 seed Chattanooga 54-53
Illinois only led this game for 25 seconds, but it was the most important time to do so. Chattanooga jumped on Illinois early, with a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes. The Mocs had control over most of the first half, but a Fighting Illini run at the end of period brought the score to 33-29.&nbsp;
The second half started much like the first with Chattanooga playing good basketball and giving themselves an 11-point cushion, but a very resilient Illinois team fought back again and kept the game within one or two possessions over the course of the closing minutes. After some questionable possessions by Chattanooga, Illinois took its first lead of the game on a Kofi Cockburn putback with 47 seconds remaining. The Mocs received a trip to the line on the next possession and two free throws were knocked down by SOCON Player of the Year Malachi Smith (who finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds), which gave his team the lead.
On the following possession Alfonso Plummer was fouled and hit two free throws for the Illini to take the lead back. On the final possession, the Mocs gave the ball to Smith who had two looks to take home the win &mdash; he was blocked on a left hand drive, then shot a last second midrange jumper that went just a tad long. Cockburn finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Plummer provided 15 points of his own. Illinois avoided the upset and will face fifth-seeded Houston on Sunday.
West Region
No. 7 seed MSU defeats No. 10 seed Davidson 74-73
An up-and-down season for Michigan State had some experts predicting Davidson would come away with this game. However, an impressive 27 points on 9-12 from the floor by Joey Hauser was the big difference.
An interesting storyline revolved around Davidson&rsquo;s transfer starting point guard, Foster Loyer &mdash; he's a Michigan native who made the move down to play with the Wildcats after three seasons of limited production for the Spartans. This proved to be a good move for Loyer, as he&rsquo;s been the leading scorer and assist man for Davidson with 16.1 points and 3.3 assists per game this season. The motivation was there for Davidson, and the team played with a confidence that showed each time the team came up with an answer to Michigan State&rsquo;s attempts to pull away.
Davidson took a five-point lead with under seven minutes to go, but with some big buckets by Hauser, heady play by AJ Hoggard (14 points) and a three from Gabe Brown (12 points), the Spartans made a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead of their own with under four minutes left. Michigan State had an eight point lead with one minute remaining, but a late push by the Wildcats with some great clock management, clutch baskets and pressure defense that led to a bad MSU turnover brought the game back in reach. However, in the end, Michigan State was able to close it out with two Tyson Walker free throws. Michigan State will take on second-seeded Duke in the round of 32.
No. 3 seed Wisconsin beats No. 14 seed Colgate 67-60
Colgate is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, and came into this game on a 15-game winning streak. The Patriot League champs made sure Wisconsin knew this one wouldn&rsquo;t be easy. However, this would be the Raiders&rsquo;s biggest test, as the Badgers won the Big Ten regular season championship and have a projected lottery pick in Johnny Davis.
Colgate found success scoring the ball from inside before unleashing their long-range prowess. Senior Nelly Cummings for Colgate finished the game with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists &mdash; he gave the Badgers trouble on all three levels. Cummings even locked the game at 28-all with a baseline reverse layup at the buzzer to go into halftime.
But the stars shine bright on the big stage and, after a slow start, Johnny Davis got going in the second half. Davis finished with 25 points on 8 for 20 shooting from the floor and added 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Tyler Wahl followed Davis with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals of his own. The Raiders played a strong game but wore down as the battle-tested Badgers showed up down the stretch. Wisconsin has a date with 11th-seeded Iowa State in the next round.

March Madness: Recapping Day 2 of the 2022 NCAA Tournament

It still feels like yesterday.
Boston Garden was going crazy because we knew the championship was ours. Guys started celebrating, Paul dumped that red Gatorade on Doc&rsquo;s head and we all celebrated like 10-year-old kids.
Somehow, it&rsquo;s already been 14 years since we beat the Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals, and even after all this time, I haven&rsquo;t forgotten those moments. It&rsquo;s like I have pictures ingrained in my head.
And going back to where it all went down to join my teammates to honor Kevin Garnett &mdash; even after all these years, man, Boston still feels like home.
I feel so blessed to have been able to play a part in such a great team accomplishing the ultimate goal. And we all felt like we played a small part in Ticket&rsquo;s jersey getting retired.
Last weekend, I was invited by the Celtics organization to attend Kevin Garnett&rsquo;s jersey retirement ceremony. It was scheduled to happen during Sunday&rsquo;s game against the Mavericks, and a bunch of the members of the 2008 team got together and spent the entire weekend in Boston. It was amazing.
It was like the band was back together. Just like old times, I was hanging out, cracking jokes and reminiscing with Paul Pierce, Big Baby Davis and Eddie House. I got to chop it up a bit and catch up with Danny Ainge. And of course, I got to not only catch up with Ray Allen and KG; I got to see them publicly, and once and for all, squash whatever beef they may have had.

Sometimes in life, one tiny decision you make ends up having such a huge impact. Before I signed with Boston, I really thought I was going to New Jersey to play with Jason Kidd and the Nets. But for a few reasons, I ended up heading to Boston instead.
One of the things I&rsquo;ll always remember about being a Celtic was the fact that when I came to Boston, I was the only player on the team who had already won a championship. Doc would sometimes ask me questions in front of the team and want to get my perspective. He&rsquo;d ask me about things that Pat Riley preached and habits that Dwyane Wade and Shaq had. He figured that I&rsquo;d gotten the top of the mountain, so I at least knew what the view looked like, you know?
But even though I had that experience, being around Ticket was just different.
He was so easy to rally around because he made it his personal duty to do all that he could to push everybody around him. And even after all these years, he still has the same unique energy.
When Ticket walks in the room, it&rsquo;s like you immediately get on guard. He just makes you want to be sharp and on point. He has the same energy today, but it was that times 10 when he was your teammate pushing you on the floor.
Everyone on the 2008 team just has a special love and appreciation for Ticket.
So being able to reconnect with guys that you won a championship with and doing it in honor of someone who helped to bring out the best in you, that just made the entire weekend in Boston all the more enjoyable.

It felt like everywhere we went in the city this past Friday and Saturday, people loved us and respected us and knew us by name. With the Celtics organization itself, they treated us like first-class citizens and made sure we were taken care of.
Not only does Boston remember what we achieved, they will never stop showing us love. And we owe a lot of that to KG. It was nice to see him get the highest honor that an organization is able to bestow on one of its own.
What I&rsquo;ll remember most from that weekend &mdash; aside from Jaylen Brown&rsquo;s <a href="https://twitter.com/celtics/status/1503106193102831620" target="_blank" rel="noopener">monstrous dunk</a> over Maxi Kleber &mdash; was KG shedding tears as he saw his jersey go up into the rafters.
A couple of us, including Big Kendrick Perkins, may have had one or two side bets about whether Ticket would cry. KG himself didn&rsquo;t think he would crack, but he obviously couldn&rsquo;t hold it all together, so we at least have something to tease him about the next time we see one another.
When I replay the weekend in my head, though, I kept finding myself thinking about Ray Allen. I was happy to see him there, but wasn&rsquo;t surprised that he attended.
I knew that everything that was said about him after he left for Miami would eventually become water under the bridge. But I knew that because I was a member of that team. The guys on that 2008 team simply loved each other too much and had too strong of a bond to let Ray&rsquo;s decision to leave ruin the bond forever. Even as words were exchanged over the years, I had all the confidence in the world that KG and Ray would bury the hatchet, and it unexpectedly happened during KG&rsquo;s moment.
While being interviewed during his jersey-retirement ceremony, out of nowhere, Ticket basically interrupted the interviewer just to say that it was good to see Ray there. Everyone started cheering before the two met at halfcourt and hugged.
As great as he was, Ticket was truly unselfish. So I guess it was fitting for him to share his moment in the spotlight with Ray and finally, publicly, squash the beef.
Nothing says &ldquo;brother&rdquo; more than that.
I think what most people don&rsquo;t really understand about being a pro athlete is how strong the relationship between teammates can become. The longer guys are together, the deeper the connection usually gets. And when you actually have success as teammates and when you win a championship together, it&rsquo;s almost as if the bond is solidified. And I speak from experience. Not only do you become members of an elite fraternity together, you helped one another get there.
Deep down inside, I think Ticket and Ray both had those feelings about each other.
After what&rsquo;s been said over the past few years, that was a beautiful thing to witness, and I&rsquo;m happy I was there in person to see it.
I&rsquo;ll never forget seeing KG and Ray hugging and jumping up and down at halfcourt at TD Garden back in 2008. It truly feels like yesterday.
In honor of Kevin Garnett &mdash; our leader and the engine that pushed that team &mdash; no other Celtic will ever wear No. 5.
I&rsquo;m proud to call him a friend and a teammate, and even prouder to see him receive the ultimate honor.
Fortunately, I have some new memories that I&rsquo;ll forever cherish.

FRONTRUNNERS: KANSAS, BAYLOR
Other than their embarrassing loss at home to Kentucky, the Kansas Jayhawks have looked the part of a No. 1 seed with an offense ranked third in the country and Adjusted Efficiency that ranks sixth. Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun are incredibly difficult to contain, while role players such as Jalen Wilson and Remy Martin are reliable in their own right. Kansas has a primetime matchup against Baylor coming up, but other than that, the team should be able to finish the season on a strong note.
The Baylor Bears are only one game back from the Jayhawks, but recently lost Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua for the year with a devastating knee injury. While this will certainly impact them down the stretch, potential first-round picks Kendall Brown and Jeremy Sochan have the potential to win game when it matters, leading the No. 14 defense in the nation. Baylor is led offensively by a three-headed monster at guard: James Akinjo, LJ Cryer, and Adam Flagler. They are effective as floor generals, scorers and facilitators, and will look to power the Bears through the final few weeks of the regular season with an eye on the top spot if they can defeat Kansas on Feb. 26.

ON THE HEELS: TEXAS TECH, TEXAS
Sporting the third-best defense in the country, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are ranked 11th nationally and have a chance to move even higher up with a win against Baylor on Wednesday. Sitting only two games back from the top spot, Bryson Williams, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Co. are nearly unbeatable at home, so Tech will push for a top-two seed over the next few weeks. Oral Roberts transfer Kevin Obanor is the swing factor for me. He&rsquo;s been inconsistent as a scorer, but when he&rsquo;s clicking and stretching the floor, the Red Raiders are incredibly difficult to compete with. Look for him to have a strong finish to the year.&nbsp;
The Texas Longhorns entered this season ranked No. 5 in the preseason poll, but are only 8-5 in conference play. While they have underperformed, I still wouldn&rsquo;t want any part of them come Big 12 or NCAA Tournament time. They are senior-laden, experienced and skilled across the board. Currently projected as as No. 5 seed in March, Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr and Co. have a very difficult schedule the next couple weeks, but have an opportunity to turn the tables in their favor.

Mike Miles is leading the team in scoring, but will need to play at an elite level to carry the team to the end.&nbsp;

State of the Conference: Evaluating the Big 12

In a battle for the top spot in the Big 12, Kansas sent a message and took the life out of the Baylor Bears, winning 83-59. Christian Braun and Ochai Agbaji led all players in scoring with 18 points each, with Braun also adding 10 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.&nbsp;
Baylor (19-4, 7-3 Big 12) is currently slotted as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament thanks to a phenomenal season thus far. They are third in the country in Adjusted Efficiency, led by a three-headed monster backcourt of L.J. Cryer, James Akinjo and Adam Flagler who combine for 40.2 points per game.&nbsp;
The Jayhawks (19-3, 8-1 Big 12) are 10th nationally in Adjusted Efficiency, but are third in offense. Agbaji continues to make his case for Player of the Year with 20.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game on 46.4% shooting from behind the arc.&nbsp;
Kansas and that No. 3 rated offense got started early and jumped out to a 12-2 lead, electrifying the home crowd. By the 10:00 mark, they led 25-9 and none of the Baylor guards had scored a single point. Agbaji, Braun, and Jalen Wilson scored 20 of the team&rsquo;s first 27 points.&nbsp;
The Jayhawks extended the lead to 37-17 after an and-one and transition alley-oop from Agbaji to Braun, and would lead 39-21 at the half. Braun led all players with 14 points on 6 of 11 from the field. Potential lottery pick Kendall Brown led Baylor with 7 points and 6 rebounds. Tchamwa Tchatchoua had 4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block off the bench. The Baylor guards were 0 for 14 from the field.&nbsp;
At the 17:10 mark in the second half, Matthew Mayer was called for a charge and head coach Scott Drew went crazy. He was assessed a technical foul and Kansas connected on the free throws to make it 46-26. At 11:33, Agbaji connected on a triple to make it 63-36 and the rest is history.&nbsp;
With 2:48 in the game, the walk-ons entered and the student section loved it. Kansas held on to win 83-59 and took a two game lead in the conference standings.
Wilson had a solid game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Brown posted 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Matthew Mayer scored 7 points on 2 of 9 from the field.&nbsp;
The first half today was Baylor&rsquo;s lowest scoring half this season.&nbsp;
Remy Martin is still out with injury and did not play in this one.

The only thing more incredible than Steph Curry breaking Ray Allen&rsquo;s record for most career three-pointers made is how quickly he accomplished the feat.
On Friday night, Curry made nine three-pointers in the Warriors&rsquo; 119-93 win over the visiting Chicago Bulls, surpassing Jesus Shuttlesworth as the league&rsquo;s top all-time marksman. Curry recorded his record-breaking triple with 10:44 remaining in the game&rsquo;s second quarter, and he finished the game with 3,366 drilled regular-season and playoff three-pointers in his career, surpassing Allen&rsquo;s previous record of 3,358.
It took Curry all of 886 total games, compared to 1,471 for Allen &mdash; a whopping 66% fewer.&nbsp;

As LeBron James continues to run down Kareem Abdul-Jabbar&rsquo;s all-time record for most career points, we can only look back at the production of some of the game&rsquo;s former giants and <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/basketball-news-what-are-the-most-unbreakable-individual-records-in-nba-history-lebron-james-wilt-chamberlain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">marvel at their accomplishments</a>.
The fact that Wilt Chamberlain was able to score 100 points in a single game, to this day, still seems outrageous. Kobe Bryant scored 81, of course, but that took 42 minutes, 46 shots, 20 free throws and astronomical usage. He still wasn&rsquo;t really able to come that close to 100, which makes Wilt&rsquo;s accomplishment all the more amazing.&nbsp;
For what it&rsquo;s worth, Wilt &mdash; who didn&rsquo;t have the benefit of any three-point shots &mdash; took 62 field goal attempts and made 28 free throws, so he wasn&rsquo;t exactly a stranger to high-usage rates, either.
But still.
We look back at Michael Jordan and the fact that he was able to go 6-0 in the Finals and say, &ldquo;Wow! Will anyone ever be able to do that again?&rdquo;
MJ's six championships (and six Finals MVPs) were truly legendary, as was the fact that he was able to complete two separate three-peats. A three-peat is pretty difficult to accomplish, and when you consider that no team since Shaq and Kobe&rsquo;s Lakers was able to win three straight, that says a lot.&nbsp;
Aside from Jordan&rsquo;s Bulls, you&rsquo;d have to go back to the 1960s to find a team that won three straight titles, though there was no shortage of teams that were able to win back-to-back. The third time &mdash; which was obviously elusive in this case &mdash; from a historical standpoint, is truly the charm.
So here&rsquo;s some perspective: although we are firmly fixated on LeBron&rsquo;s quest to become the league&rsquo;s all-time scorer, we have to consider that he sits third on the all-time list, not second. His 35,516 points trail Karl Malone&rsquo;s career total of 36,928 by a healthy margin of 1,412.
Although it seems to be a foregone conclusion that LeBron will pass Malone, every missed game increases the possibility that the accomplishment will have to wait until next season. If, however, he&rsquo;s able to average 24 points per game moving forward, he&rsquo;d need 59 games to surpass The Mailman. It&rsquo;s certainly within the realm of possibility to happen this season, and almost certainly next.
Kareem on the other hand? That&rsquo;s a whole different ballgame.
LeBron currently trails Kareem by 2,871 points. Assuming the same 24 point-per-game scoring clip, he&rsquo;s 120 games away. There&rsquo;s no guarantee he&rsquo;ll get there, but if he&rsquo;s able to stay relatively healthy &mdash; considering his high-level of play &mdash; you&rsquo;ve got to like his chances.

So what does all this have to do with Curry?
This&hellip;
He broke Ray Allen&rsquo;s career three-pointer made mark in a staggering 585 fewer games. That&rsquo;s seven seasons worth.
It feels like LeBron has been great since forever, and he&rsquo;s been a 20-point per-game scorer for the entirety of his career. He&rsquo;s nearly there, but even after all these years, he still has pretty far to go before he surpasses Kareem.&nbsp;
A simple analysis of the numbers gives you a newfound respect for how great (and healthy) Kareem was, and where LeBron fits in his own right.
In the future, history will look at Curry and marvel at his career three-pointers-made mark much in the same way we look at Wilt&rsquo;s 100 points or Kareem&rsquo;s all-time mark (or, by then, LeBron&rsquo;s all-time mark).
Ray Allen made 2.3 threes per contest. To this point, Curry has averaged 3.7 treys a night. Said differently, he&rsquo;s obliterated Allen&rsquo;s pace, making 60% more threes than Allen on a per-game basis.
Although Curry has had his share of injuries, he&rsquo;s had five full regular seasons in which he&rsquo;s made more than 5 three-pointers per game. This season would be his sixth.&nbsp;
We obviously have no idea when it will end for Curry and how long he can continue at his current level of productivity, but if he is able to play anywhere near his current level &mdash; and is able to play at least 75% of his games for another three or four years &mdash; it&rsquo;s very possible that he could make another 1,000 three-pointers. Counting eggs before they hatch is never a good idea, but the true amazement in Curry&rsquo;s journey is not only about how far he&rsquo;s come, but how quickly he&rsquo;s gotten to this point.
Years from now, we&rsquo;ll be trying to explain to our children and grandchildren how Steph was able to do it. A truly revolutionary player, he&rsquo;s expanded everyone&rsquo;s imaginations. His peers, desperately trying to emulate him, are pulling up from the center circle.&nbsp;
He&rsquo;s single-handedly birthed an entire generation of players who rather drill stepbacks than pull off windmill dunks.
Imagine one of today&rsquo;s players scoring 48 points per game over the course of his career, or another beating Kareem&rsquo;s career mark in 12 seasons. That&rsquo;s the equivalent of what Steph Curry accomplished on Friday night.
Even more incredible, is how much further he has to go.

The NBA has seen so many great defenders that picking out a top five seems impossible. But Metta Sandiford-Artest, who is one of the best wing defenders in league history himself, took up that challenge.
"Bill Russell gotta be No. 1. Then, you probably gotta have Wilt [Chamberlain] with 26 defensive rebounds. [Dennis] Rodman &mdash; he&rsquo;s incredible. Whenever you hear the name Michael Jordan, it isn&rsquo;t crazy to assume someone is bound to bring up Kobe Bryant. And that&rsquo;s exactly what T.O. did.
&ldquo;Is Kobe one of the top defensive guys?&rdquo; Owens asked.
Sandiford-Artest <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDFhVO_-n2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a>: "I don&rsquo;t think Kobe is as good of a defender as Michael Jordan. I think I&rsquo;ve seen Jordan differently because I looked up to Jordan&rsquo;s defense. Like when I was watching Jordan, I was like, &lsquo;His offense is incredible. I&rsquo;m not even gonna try to accomplish that.' But his defense is like... I would watch him play defense. He&rsquo;s just locking guys up.&rsquo;"

MJ, Gary Payton, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe share the record for most NBA All-Defensive First-Team selections with nine, and Jordan was the first player in NBA history to reach that number. But MJ is the only one from that group Metta included on his list, and it&rsquo;s a good thing he did.
It seems NBA fans, in general, have forgotten how good of a defender Michael actually was. That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s great to have a former NBA player remind us of it every once in a while. People are so caught up in the GOAT debate, which for most boils down to the offensive side of the floor. (This is mostly true for the ones trying to make a case for LeBron as the greatest of all time.) But defense still matters, especially when comparing players head-to-head.
The NBA has only seen a handful of better perimeter defenders than MJ. That&rsquo;s why Sandiford-Artest has him on his top five, but he still can&rsquo;t decide who the last guy on that list is.
"If I had to pick one more, Ben Wallace is an amazing defender. [Scottie] Pippen is an amazing defender but I&rsquo;m not sure he&rsquo;s better than Rodman or Jordan," Sandiford-Artest <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDFhVO_-n2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Notice how Sandiford-Artest doesn&rsquo;t have anyone from today&rsquo;s NBA in his top five? Well, the only guy close to making his list is Draymond Green &mdash; the <a href="https://www.basketballnetwork.net/draymond-green-and-tony-allen-argue-over-goat-defender-status/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">self-proclaimed greatest defender of all-time</a>. But the era he plays in makes it impossible for Metta to put him there.
"Now, when you talk about this era you can&rsquo;t compare that to all-time because they changed the rules for Wilt. When Shaq [O'Neal] came in the game, they changed the rules for Shaq," Sandiford-Artest <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDFhVO_-n2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. Back in the days, it was impossible for a 6-6 guy to play power forward if you wasn&rsquo;t thick. I&rsquo;m not saying he&rsquo;s not strong enough, but I&rsquo;m saying it&rsquo;s a different era."
Sandiford-Artest still thinks of Draymond as one of the all-time great NBA defenders, just not good enough to make his top-five list, and that&rsquo;s fair. The fact he gave Green his credit proves this isn&rsquo;t your typical &ldquo;former player diminishing today&rsquo;s players&rdquo; type of argument. It&rsquo;s an honest assessment by one of the greatest perimeter defenders ever, and it&rsquo;s hard to argue against it.

Hi, hello, and welcome to yet another edition of Roaming The Baseline! This will be a weekly endeavor where I point out some things that caught my eye: a hot or cold streak from a player, a developmental flash, a well-run play, a funny tweet, who knows? There will be film -- it&rsquo;s me, so of course there will be film -- but this will also be a bit looser. It&rsquo;s an extension of my Twitter feed, if you will.&nbsp;
With that said, let&rsquo;s roam the baseline.
RUSSELL WESTBROOK KEEPS ON FLYIN'
There's always a "but..." with Russell Westbrook.
He can get to the rim whenever he wants! But the free throws...
He can make any pass in the book! But the turnovers...
He can hound dudes as an on-ball defender! But when he's off-ball...
Even the triple-doubles -- his teams have won roughly 75% of their games in which they occur -- draw some casternation. How contested were those rebounds? How friendly was the scorekeeper for those assists? How many shots did he take?
As someone who has been on both sides of the fence -- I appreciate his rim pressure and passing chops, not so much a fan of the decision-making and defense on a per-possession basis -- even I find the discourse around him exhausting.
My favorite part of the Westbrook Experience may be the rebounding, but on the offensive end. He's technically tied with Bruce Brown atop the guard list for offensive rebounds (1.7) this season, though calling Brown a guard may be a stretch due to his role.
At any rate, Westbrook's penchant for timely clean-ups are uniquely him. Beating the odds may be underselling the ridiculousness of his adventures.&nbsp;

That's Westbrook high-pointing a ball with two Pacers in the vicinity, then flinging a dart to Alex Len before touching the floor. That, uh, is not an easy play to make! And somehow, that wasn't even the most impressive board Westbrook snagged.

Following a Bradley Beal pull-up jumper, there are three Pacers -- all taller than Westbrook -- who have better rebound positioning. Westbrook is able to slither inside of Kelan Martin, dislodge the ball from Martin and Domantas Sabonis, then beat Doug McDermott to the ball. He then caps off that feat by dishing the rock to a cutting Rui Hachimura for an open flush.
Westbrook finished with four offensive rebounds (19 total) in that game, the seventh instance of Westbrook having at least four offensive rebounds in a game this season.&nbsp;
Regardless of how you feel about the man, these things remain true:
1) Westbrook is one of the best guards in NBA history, and will be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.
2) That man brings it. Every single night. Even when the result isn't great, it's hard not to respect the process.
3) He is the primary reason that the Wizards would be incredibly annoying to play against during the play-in and playoffs.
IS ANDREW WIGGINS... UNDERRATED?
Let's start with a wonky stat query, shall we?
Wiggins is averaging 18.6 points while shooting 37.7% from deep (5.2 attempts), and also blocking a shot (1.0) per night. The only two players <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/traditional/?sort=FG3_PCT&amp;dir=-1&amp;CF=FG3A*GE*5:PTS*GE*18:BLK*GE*1&amp;Season=2020-21&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">matching or besting those marks</a> are Kevin Durant and Karl-Anthony Towns.
That means next-to-nothing from a big picture perspective -- Wiggins is no KD or KAT. It's only to point out that it isn't easy to find that combination of scoring, three-point shooting proficiency, and event creation defensively.&nbsp;
But dig into Wiggins' season a bit, and you should come away... mildly impressed. He isn't just flying down the court and operating as a play-finisher alongside Steph Curry. He grades out well in self-created actions, per Synergy: post-ups (51st percentile), pick-and-rolls (71st percentile), and isolation (83rd percentile).

After an outlier bad start as a finisher, Wiggins is converting a career-high 70.7% of his shots <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wiggian01.html#shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inside of three feet</a>. It's a shame that's coming with a career-low free throw rate (.226), but hey. Baby steps.
More surprisingly, Wiggins has seemingly graduated from the good-when-he-cares class on defense. The Warriors have trusted him with a variety of tough assignments thorughout the season. Not only has he held his own, he's flat-out shut the water off sometimes.

Who the heck had this on the Bingo! card before the year?
A fun stat to round things out: the Curry-Wiggins-Draymond Green trio without Kelly Oubre on the floor has a <a href="https://www.pbpstats.com/wowy-combos/nba?TeamId=1610612744&amp;Season=2020-21&amp;SeasonType=Regular%2BSeason&amp;PlayerIds=203952,1626162,201939,203110" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plus-11.9 net rating</a> in 631 minutes.&nbsp;
WES MATTHEWS, FILLING IN THE GAPS
It's no secret that the Lakers have been injury-ravaged this season, with notable absences from their two superstars. It feels like we've had a microsope on their role players -- sometimes unfairly -- because of how their level of importance has fluctuated. Talen Horton-Tucker shouldn't be the only credible ball-handler the Lakers have available. Heck, I just wrote about Marc Gasol's playing time <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/marc-gasol-should-get-more-minutes-los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a week ago</a>.
If we're tossing out hat-tips for recent play, I'd like to nominate Wes Matthews. His per-game numbers won't pop for you -- 7.3 points in 25.3 minutes over the last four games -- but he's doing what's needed.&nbsp;
He's knocking down threes at a high clip; the Lakers will take 37% on five attempts from him. Defensively, he's taken on an assortment of tough matchups recently: CJ McCollum, Chris Paul, and RJ Barrett (boy was he <a href="https://twitter.com/NekiasNBA/status/1392349962785153028?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">put in a tough spot</a> at the end of that game) are just a few.&nbsp;

The Lakers have been [checks notes] over 17 points per 100 possessions better with Matthews on the floor over the past four games. That number 1) isn't entirely on him and 2) seems unsustainable, but it's at least a testament to Matthews providing plus-value on both ends.
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO "HMMMM"

<li>All-NBA is tough. There are a lot of great players in the league. Injuries/COVID will make those discussions even tougher. But, like, where is the Trae Young buzz for an All-NBA team? He's 15th in scoring (25.6) and second in assists (9.5). He's the&nbsp;creator for a team with home-court advantage, and the Hawks have been 8.5 points per 100 possessions better <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/vs/advanced/#!?TeamID=1610612737&amp;VsPlayerID=1629027&amp;Season=2020-21&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with Young on the floor</a>. I encourage you to look at the same stat for <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/vs/advanced/#!?TeamID=1610612742&amp;VsPlayerID=1629029&amp;Season=2020-21&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a guy in Dallas</a>, just for funsies.</li>
<li>Keep an eye on Evan Fournier, now that Jaylen Brown is done for the season with a wrist injury. He's averaging 21.3 points (59/59/75 shooting split) in the four games since Brown went out.</li>
<li>Uhhhh, Kelly Olynyk is #not #slowing #down. He's putting up 18.9 points (56/38/85 shooting split), 8.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists since the All-Star break. Pick-and-pops, herky-jerky post-ups, fake handoffs. I keep waiting for his usual regression and it... just hasn't happened. His free agency should be fun.</li>
<li>Jaxson Hayes' last three games: 19 and 8 with 3 blocks, 18 and 8 with 6 blocks, and then 13 points against Memphis on Monday... and he went 3-of-3 from deep. #2KWasRight.</li>
<li>Speaking of former lottery bigs we don't quite know what to think of: Marvin Bagley is averaging 17 and 8 in May. The pathway to being a high-level play finisher, on the interior anyway, is still there.</li>

PLAYS I LIKED
The Butler Did It
It's always a good time when the Heat 1) run some screening action for Duncan Robinson or 2) clear a corner. It's especially fun when they do both.

Jimmy Butler darts from the left corner to the right block, giving off the illusion of a post-up clear-out. With Marcus Smart top-locking him (a heavy theme from this game), Butler uses Smart's positioning against him, back-cutting him and getting a lob from Goran Dragic in the process.
One might say it was a Smart play from Butler.
Masterful Misdirection
This is freaking hilarious.

The play initially caught my eye because I was like, "Hmmm, is this a 'Floppy' look? Teams are still doing that?" I like the set up regardless; Kevin Huerter, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and John Collins form this weird triangle and it immediately throws the Wizards for a loop.
Westbrook calls out a switch early; clearly some wires get crossed because of it. Bogdanovic flies through the escape hatch beofre relocating to the left wing. Hachimura starts chasing Bogdanovic for... some... reason. That leaves Westbrook caught between Huerter and Collins, and they win that 2-on-1 pretty easily.
Fun stuff. Confusing stuff. Creative stuff. Effective stuff.
Bringing Down the House
Seems a bit mundane, but I wanted to give a quick shout to the budding chemistry between Tyrese Maxey and Dwight Howard off the bench.

We get a variation of HORNS Flare to kick things off; Anthony Tolliver (still alive!) ghosts a screen for Maxey before relocating to the right wing. The action then flows into a pick-and-roll between Maxey and Howard.
With George Hill stashed in the left corner -- he's shooting 46% from there over the past three seasons, per InStat -- TJ McConnell can't tag Howard on the roll in good conscious. Maxey does a phenomenal job of driving deep enough to engage Goga Bitadze, then flips a lob over his head for the easy slam.

Roaming the Baseline: Russell Westbrook, Andrew Wiggins, Wes Matthews

Chances are if you&rsquo;re a diehard NBA fan, you&rsquo;re well aware of the bromance between Boban Marjanovic and Tobias Harris. From the viral videos and the mini-series vlog, to their chemistry on the court with three different teams, we&rsquo;ve seen them go from two guys on the same squad to a dynamic duo whose friendship captivates basketball fans across the world.
Split since the 2019 offseason, they haven&rsquo;t been teammates for two seasons, but the infamous pairing has joined forces once again in a campaign for Goldfish crackers. Though the snack company has already rolled out different commercials featuring Boban and Tobias and their usual shenanigans, that&rsquo;s not all!&nbsp;
Beginning Tuesday, Goldfish is holding a competition called the #GoForTheHandful challenge, where fans will utilize TikTok to record themselves attempting to grasp as many crackers as they can in one hand to try to beat Boban, whose massive mitt scooped up 301 in one try.
&ldquo;And they can fit more! I don't know how you guys do it, but it's up to you,&rdquo; Boban told BasketballNews.com in an exclusive interview via Zoom. &ldquo;We had a lot of fun there counting these fish.&rdquo;
&ldquo;So obviously, when you shake Boban's hand, it's like your hand is getting swallowed,&rdquo; Tobias told BasketballNews.com in a separate interview. &ldquo;I've always known that Boban has the biggest hands ever, but when I went from my handful and got my 73, I was like really hyped and ecstatic, 'There's no way Bobi's gonna get more than me.' And then when he did his and they got his official count, I was just like, 'That's impossible.' I don't know if anyone can beat that, but I do want to see [it]...I would say shoot for trying to beat my 73.&rdquo;

According to Goldfish, the 25 most creative and entertaining videos will be awarded a special edition autographed &ldquo;Boban Size&rdquo; giant bag, and one lucky TikToker will become the Goldfish &ldquo;Spokeshand.&rdquo; The contest closes on Sunday, April 25.
While shooting the commercial over the All-Star break was a fun experience for both, it was obvious who had been in front of the camera more than the other. Boban quips that he&rsquo;s the better actor &ldquo;easy,&rdquo; and Tobias agrees. The process went swimmingly for all involved, even with the first take getting off to a messy start.
&ldquo;I really broke [the bag] like that! I didn&rsquo;t expect it,&rdquo; Boban laughed. &ldquo;I was like, 'Oh, sorry! There's a lot of Goldfish on the floor!' I tried to clean it. This is #GoForTheHandful. It's so cool. I know Tobias was laughing the first time. We both started laughing at how I broke that bag.&rdquo;
Tobias couldn&rsquo;t control his real-life reaction.
&ldquo;The director was like, 'Hey Tobias, we don't need you laughing on this one,'&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;So I was like, 'Alright!' But I just started laughing 'cause I was just like, 'Come on, Bobi. What are you doing here?' It was all fun and games, and [then] I also had to realize, 'Oh, we are shooting a commercial, too.'
&ldquo;Bobi's actually been a real actor, so for him, this was something he was used to. I think it was like the first time in my life that Bobi was schooling me on things to do, or how to act as if I'm an actor. I had to put him in his place, and I was like, 'Bobi, all you did was get your ass kicked by John Wick. You had to keep it moving.' (Laughs) But nah, he knew this person's this person and this person does this and this person...cut, speed, all that stuff -- he was all about it. But for me, it was an incredible experience. We were on set, I had my own trailer van, Bobi had his own, and I was just like, 'Dang, they're really treating us like we're real actors here!' So it was dope.&rdquo;

Boban and Tobias&rsquo; relationship began in 2016 when the former signed with the Detroit Pistons. On day one of individual workouts, Harris was the first to approach the other and told him that he was a really good player. Little did he know that Boban was unhappy with him because he wouldn&rsquo;t pass him the ball, and also said that he thought that Tobias was a cocky player. However, Boban thanked him after the exchange and the two would get on the same page quickly thereafter.
&ldquo;I'm a big music guy, so we'd play a lot of music. I always used to see Boban in the weight room dancing to the music, and I would have to show him some moves, so that just like increased our bond,&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;One day, he was over at my house and we were just hanging out, and I was showing him like a couple of dances. The song Chicken Noodle Soup came on, and I was showing him how to do the Chicken Noodle Soup dance. From there, that hit the internet and it just went crazy, and people loved it.
&ldquo;(Laughs) And I thought it was so funny because you see this guy, Boban, everyone knows him. He's such an amazing person and people love his character and who he is, and then you get to see him in the element of being a kid -- and I think that's what people take in the most. It was awesome. So I kinda like made Bobi famous by showing him the Chicken Noodle Soup...more famous.&rdquo;
Boban chuckles at the way it all began.
&ldquo;We were in the locker room and he sat in front of me on the other side of the room, and I said, 'Tobias, I don't like you.' He was like, 'Wow, what?'&rdquo; Boban reminisced. &ldquo;Now, I can't say that anymore. It's not allowed! We were joking around [back then], and he said, 'I have a song for you.' It was the song, Chicken Noodle Soup. This is how everything started. I hope our next commercial will be a soup commercial."
Boban and Tobias rapidly <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd1a3Yngpv_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">became internet sensations</a>. No matter where they went, a loyal fan base followed. When the two were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in the Blake Griffin deal, it didn&rsquo;t take long for their popularity to capture a wider audience. They started up &ldquo;Bobi + Tobi,&rdquo; a three-episode mini series in the 2018 preseason based on the pair&rsquo;s combined nickname.
&ldquo;We wanted to match,&rdquo; Boban said. &ldquo;But now, we have that thing -- who wants to be first? Bobi and Tobi, or Tobi and Bobi? I was for Tobi and Bobi, and Tobias was for Bobi and Tobi. We stuck with Bobi and Tobi because he's the brain of the operation (laughs).&rdquo;
Despite hesitation to shorten his name, Tobias hatched the idea and created the popular tag.
&ldquo;As a kid, people would try to call me Tobi, but I hated the name Tobi...I suck it up now,&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;In the beginning, people in LA used to be like, 'Tobi! Tobi!' And I used to be like, 'That's not my name.' And I then I had to realize, this is your actor name, so you're gonna have to get used to it. So then, I'm now used to it. It doesn't bother me. I am [leaning into it].&rdquo;

Bobi and Tobi would roam the streets of Hollywood, with plenty of social media virality surrounding them. Most of their stories have hit the worldwide web; Tobias cracks a smile and declines to tell the ones that haven&rsquo;t. When asked to share their favorite moment, both pointed to a hilarious encounter in LA.
&ldquo;We had just finished going out to eat somewhere. After, he's just in his car playing Bodak Yellow,&rdquo; Tobias recalled. &ldquo;Cardi B's part [comes on] and he pulls out his red slippers, 'cause she was like, 'I got bloody shoes,' so he pulled out his red slippers. I was like, 'Where did this process for you to do that?' You had to listen to that song over 50 times to actually think that on the fly.&rdquo;
&ldquo;(Laughs) Going out, he was like, 'Show 'em your flip-flops, show 'em your flip-flops!' And I showed him the flip-flops,&rdquo; Boban snickered. &ldquo;&lsquo;This is red bottoms!'"
Tobias admits one of his favorite things about hanging out with Boban is walking behind him to see everybody&rsquo;s reactions, often being his personal photographer when the fans approach.
The second time the duo got moved was in a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. On an airplane with Mike Scott and then-former assistant Sixers general manager Marc Eversley, Tobias vividly remembers a not-so-fun trip for his buddy Boban.
&ldquo;We were on a private jet -- but Boban's head is literally hitting the ceiling, and he hates planes and turbulence,&rdquo; Tobias described. &ldquo;So this whole flight, I'm just like, 'Oh my gosh.' I can't even close my eyes 'cause he's gonna be like, 'Tobias, turbulence, turbulence!' And that's just what he does [on planes]. So I think seeing him on this private jet and his head literally at the top of the ceiling, I was like, 'Man, I feel bad for Bobi right now. This is a bad flight for him to be on.' That was one of the moments I was like, 'Man, it must suck to be a giant' (laughs).&rdquo;

When the 2018-19 season came to an end, so did Boban and Tobias&rsquo; time as teammates. The towering big man&rsquo;s contract expired that summer, and he ended up inking a two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks with his partner continuing his career in Philly. It was the first time they were separated since they met in Motown.
&ldquo;Yeah, it was tough. At first, I was like, 'Man...' When he was signing with Dallas, I was like, 'Dang.' But I was also happy because I wanted him to be in a good situation, and as a friend, I wanted him to be somewhere where I knew he was gonna be comfortable,&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;He was a little nervous going there, but I said, 'People will love you wherever you go. You just have that impact on teams and a locker room and everything, so I wouldn't be nervous or nothing.' I was sad, though, that we weren't playing together just because that's been my dawg for like four years, since we were together in Detroit. Hopefully, the stars align and we'll get back together somehow, some way."
"It's being professionals and it's business. Everybody has their own way and what way they are going,&rdquo; Boban said. &ldquo;We're still friends, we're still good and I'll still be there for him [with] whatever he needs. This is what friends do. If he changes a team, we didn't change our phone numbers. I still support him. I still text him when he has a great game. He's playing great and I wish him to continue that. I'm proud of him.&rdquo;
Boban hopes to see Tobias as an All-Star next year, even offering to be his friend&rsquo;s personal prop in the case that the former participates in the Slam Dunk contest; Tobias burst out in laughter at that second notion.
&ldquo;Hey, if they put me in the dunk contest, then we will NOT have a good dunk contest (laughs),&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;Hate to break it to ya! But that would be the best plan of action."

Whoever has followed these two from the moment their bromance became public understands that it is hilarious, yet extremely genuine.
&ldquo;We're different, but we're the same, you know?&nbsp; If you ask me why [we get along so well], this is the same [in regards to] the relationship with my wife,&rdquo; Boban said. &ldquo;We don't watch the same movies, we don't listen to the same music, but we have something in common where, together, we make one great person. This is the same with Tobias. I don't know why I listened to different music and he listened to different music, but at the end of the story, we started listening to the same music, he'd send me some TV shows, I would send him some TV shows. It was cool. I miss it!&rdquo;
&ldquo;Why do we get along? I would just say it's like two people with caring hearts for other people. It's also like a culture dynamic, too, where he's somebody that's from a totally different country or upbringing and all the way down the line than myself,&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;And like, when I see Bobi and I think why everyone gets along with Bobi is he's just a free-spirit person that loves to be around positive people, good people that embrace life, people that have a lot of personalities that are in line. Boban's such a caring person -- cares about his family, cares about really anybody that he meets; he wants to make sure that they left better than they were when they met him.&nbsp; I think, for me, I'm kinda the same way. When I first started hanging out [with him], I was like, 'Man this dude never has a bad day.' He's somebody that brings joy to your own day because you realize his positive energy is just a real thing. When we were hanging out, it made me appreciate my life and the things that I get to do just by seeing his type of energy.&rdquo;

When Tobias saw the public&rsquo;s response to the pair&rsquo;s commercial, he texted Boban: Bobi, the people love this commercial.&nbsp;
Boban replied: The people right now need to love in the world.
Tobias sent another message back: That's true, and they're getting it.
&ldquo;He said back to me, 'I love when people text me and tweet me saying that commercial has brought them joy.' He really means that,&rdquo; Tobias said. &ldquo;I wrote him back and I was like, 'Man, you're an impactful dude' because when you think like that, it puts everything in perspective, and he means it. Even when we were doing the commercial, he was like, 'It needs to be fun and it needs to be loving.' He'd keep saying that on set: 'There needs to be more love. More love. People need to see it and smile.' And I'd say, '[You're] exactly right.' That's kinda how like...we just vibe with a lot of our ideas and creations that we get into, and this one was an amazing production by Goldfish to showcase that."
Boban was excited to bring smiles to people's faces with this commercial, but nobody more than his 4-year-old and 9-year-old sons, Petar and Vuk.
&ldquo;This isn't for me to judge, but I think we did a great job. We really did a great job. It was a lot of stuff...I'm so happy because I make my kids proud, and to be like a role model,&rdquo; Boban said. &lsquo;This is what Goldfish and Tobias helped me to be what everybody wants to be in kids' eyes, something special. And I think I've done it.
&ldquo;I feel amazing [about the reaction]. When people write, 'I love what you do. I love your skills. I love your friendship with Tobias,' how can you feel? You can't say anything else,&rdquo; Boban said. &ldquo;Take [last Wednesday]. We played against the Boston Celtics. I didn't go in the game, but I had a big, huge sign: 'I Love Boban.' A lot of people were chanting my name, 'Boban! Boban!' They weren't like all Dallas fans, they were Celtics fans, but they [were] Boban fans. I like how they say my name, want me to show my heart. It's an amazing thing. I feel proud of myself and I feel proud of my parents because they raised me to be a nice guy and just make other people happy, too.&rdquo;

Reunited and it feels so good: Boban Marjanovic, Tobias Harris open up on friendship

Amadou Gallo Fall wanted to make one thing especially clear on the phone Thursday as he discussed the new Basketball Africa League: this is not going to be a feeder league for the NBA. It could eventually be a competitor to the Euroleague and the Chinese Basketball Association for Americans looking to play overseas.
&ldquo;We already have [six] national champions and six other teams that got through a 30-team qualifying tournament. From the jump, that&rsquo;s where we are,&rdquo; Fall, the president of the BAL, told BasketballNews.com via WhatsApp from Johannesburg, South Africa. &ldquo;The BAL is not looking to be a stepping stone.&rdquo;
There are currently 17 African Players on NBA rosters. Precious Achiuwa (Miami Heat) and Udoka Azubuike (Utah Jazz) were among eight 2020 draftees from or with at least one parent from Nigeria, including Isaac Okoro (Cleveland Cavaliers), Onyeka Okongwu (Atlanta Hawks), Zeke Nnaji (Denver Nuggets), Desmond Bane (Memphis Grizzlies via Boston), Daniel Oturu (Los Angeles Clippers via New York and Minnesota) and Jordan Nwora (Milwaukee Bucks).
&ldquo;We want as many players as possible to go to the NBA, but then to come back and play at home. Africa has stable leagues where players are not trying to get out,&rdquo; Fall said.
The BAL will begin play Sunday, May 16 at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, with 12 teams from Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Rwanda.
One of those teams is all but certain to produce an NBA-caliber player, but the existing Africa-to-American pipeline that produced All-Stars Joel Embiid and Pascal Siakam, along with dozens of others, will remain in place. What&rsquo;s different is that many retired NBA players are now part of the African domestic league and national team infrastructure, including Luol Deng (head coach and president of the national federation in South Sudan).

Fall worked in the NBA league office after a stint with the Dallas Mavericks as Director of Player Personnel and Vice President of International Affairs. Prior to being named BAL President, Fall was Vice President and Managing Director of NBA Africa, where he worked with local federations, corporations, NGOs and other key stakeholders to grow the game of basketball across the continent.
This is his crowning achievement, and he repeatedly stressed that BAL is aiming to be one of the world&rsquo;s top destination leagues.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m confident that we will increase exponentially, and we will attract talent from around the world. They will want to come to Africa,&rdquo; Fall said. &ldquo;This is about building the ecosystem, not about growing the players so that they can play somewhere else.&rdquo;
Jonathan Kuminga of the G League Ignite is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and should be an NBA lottery pick next season. Baylor's Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua of Cameroon, Iona's Nelly Junior Joseph of Nigeria and Washington State's Efe Abogibi of Nigeria, are notable African players in college basketball.
Each team is permitted to have two players from a different African country. Also, they can have two "import" players, which will open opportunities for American players who typically try to find work in Europe or China if they are not quite NBA-ready.
Dikembe Mutombo, Manute Bol, Hakeem Olajuwon and Steve Nash (born in South Africa) are among the greatest NBA players of all time from the continent, and more will be coming from Africa. What&rsquo;ll be different from now on is that African players will have a league to return to should they choose to.
Nigeria (24) and Senegal (12) have produced the most NBA players. Former New York Knick Charles Smith has close ties to the federation in Cape Verde, and Tacko Fall of the Boston Celtics has been one of the league&rsquo;s most popular players over the past two seasons.
What is the next African hotspot?
&ldquo;Tunisia has to be talked about,&rdquo; Fall said, also mentioning Senegal, Mali, South Sudan and Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). &ldquo;They are the reigning Afrobasket champion and have a very strong federation and player development.
The man would know.
Fall has a whole continent of basketball players under his wing now, along with a pro league that, if successful, will draw players in from around the world.&nbsp;
