I take pride in my defense. I&rsquo;ve always enjoyed guarding the best scorer on the other team. I look forward to it. When I&rsquo;m assigned one of those match-ups, I know it&rsquo;s gonna be a fun night.
In my 13 years as an NBA player, I guarded many perennial All-Stars and future Hall-of-Famers. I&rsquo;m talking about the best of the best. I tried to contain them and get under their skin. I'd constantly poke my hands in to try to get a pick or at least throw off their rhythm. If I could get scorers to think and worry about my hands, that was a win for me. But for these guys, it was basically impossible. They were always locked in.
What is it like to guard these superstars? In part one, I shared <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-corey-brewer-guarding-stars-lebron-james-giannis-antetokounmpo-james-harden-kevin-durant-stephen-curry-damian-lillard-russell-westbrook-kawhi-leonard-carmelo-anthony" target="_blank" rel="noopener">my experiences defending current elite scorers</a>. Today, I&rsquo;ll break down some of the retired legends that I matched up against:
Kobe Bryant
You never forget the first time you played against Kobe Bryant. For me, it was in my rookie year in Minnesota and he dropped 30 on us. When he stepped on the court, just his swag, his whole demeanor, made me feel like, &ldquo;Damn, this is Kobe Bryant!&rdquo;&nbsp;
Kobe was a nightmare to guard. Seriously. He knew what he wanted to do, and I couldn't make him do anything different. It was like the game was a script to him; it was really a Hollywood script, and he was going to put me in his movie. I can&rsquo;t explain it any other way except that I was in Kobe&rsquo;s movie. When I was in the mid-post with him, he knew what he was about to do. It was: &ldquo;I'm gonna fake left and then fade over my right shoulder,&rdquo; or, &ldquo;I'm gonna pump-fake you, make you foul me and get the and-one,&rdquo; or &ldquo;I&rsquo;m gonna pump fake and go dunk on your head.&rdquo; He had a plan and he executed it. He was amazing, man. Unbelievable. Kobe would make so many difficult shots and I&rsquo;d just be amazed.

He was a no-nonsense killer, and that's why I'm glad I got to play him in the playoffs a couple of times. Just to see him in that environment, playing at that level and being the way he is on the basketball court, that's why everybody respects him so much. He was that good, and he was really a student of the game. That's why he played for 20 years. He worked his tail off, and he was that good for so long because he was such a hard worker in all the nuances and technical aspects of the game. He was everything. He was relentless and steadfast in his plan: from his footwork to his bank shots to getting fouled--everything he did, I knew he had thought about it, worked on it and watched film on it. He loved the game. That's why Kobe Bryant was Kobe Bryant. Rest in Peace.
Dirk Nowitzki
I actually used to get to guard Dirk a lot. Dirk's tough, man -- the one-leggers! He's a "footer" meaning he's at least 7 feet tall, so I'm not gonna block his shot, and I'm not gonna speed him up no matter what. Like Kobe, he had a plan and I just hoped I could try to do something that made him get out of a rhythm. When I guarded Dirk, I just tried to deny him in his favorite spots or front the post. I just tried to be a little 6-9 pest. It felt like the only thing I could do guarding Dirk was be a nuisance because when he got the ball, it was over. He might miss, but he was typically going to get the shots he wanted. If I could just force him to shoot 12 inches away from where he most wanted to go, I did my job.&nbsp;
Dirk is one of the best scorers I've seen in the NBA. Ever. I played with him in 2011, when he had that incredible postseason and got us a Championship ring when we defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. It didn&rsquo;t matter who they put out there, he wasn't going to be stopped during our run to the championship.&nbsp;

Dirk is for sure the reason we have all these stretch-fours now. The trail three, that was his bread and butter! At the time, bigs used to run back into the paint, but Dirk Nowitzki trailed in, stopped at the three-point line and let it fly -- and it would splash. Dirk was a bad boy, man.&nbsp;
While we all revel in how he shot the ball, it was the tireless work he put into his craft that made him that kind of shooter. He worked on the one-leg jumper so much. It wasn&rsquo;t just some random move he would do sometimes; he worked on it a lot, and that's why he made so many and why it became his go-to. He changed the game and evolved the big man position we all see now.&nbsp;
Dwyane Wade
I hated guarding D-Wade because his pump fake was just unbelievable. He was so athletic. Going to the rim, he&rsquo;d dunk on people. Then he'd go and just stop on a dime, pump fake, then draw a foul. I knew his plan so I'd try not to foul him, but that&rsquo;s when he had me right where he wanted--not as aggressive as I normally am. He was just tough with the way he approached the game, the way he played the game and how good he was at getting to the basket and finishing.&nbsp;

And, seriously, Dwyane Wade's pump fake has to be up there as one of the greatest ever. I hated that pump fake. My goal there was just to stay down and make him shoot a jump shot over me. I feel like if I did that, I did my job -- which, a lot of times, it still wasn't good enough. But hey, I did my job; I'd rather him pump fake, shoot a jump shot and make it than him pump fake and draw a foul or dunk on me or my teammate -- because his dunks would always get his team and the crowd going. My job wasn't to stop scorers like him, it was to get them to take shots they were less likely to make than they otherwise would if I didn't do my job. Fouling was the worst thing I could do--most scorers shoot free throws well.&nbsp;
Gilbert Arenas
If Gilbert Arenas didn&rsquo;t get hurt, we&rsquo;d be talking about him on a different level. I feel like people don't realize how good he was and how well he played during his prime. When he got that big contract, he deserved it. He just got hurt and had bad luck. That's all you can say. But he was a tough guard with the way he could shoot it.&nbsp;
I wanted him to pass. I would try to send him to my help and get the ball out of his hands because when he had that ball in his hands, he could get going. They didn't call him "Hibachi" for nothing! When he got going, he got going. He heated up fast when his confidence soared.
Gilbert Arenas was actually one of the first dudes to be coming off the pick-and-roll and pull it from deep. He used to pull from deep, and he had the ball on a string; when he went to the basket, that was his thing. Gilbert was tough, and I feel like if he didn't get hurt, we're talking about him in a different sense. But I have to show him love because he was that good.
Tracy McGrady
I caught T-Mac toward the end of his time with the Houston Rockets. T-Mac was tough. I remember the first time I played T-Mac, he'd catch it and he'd jab step. He'd jab me off, and it was a thing of beauty. I&rsquo;d be thinking, &ldquo;What is he gonna do? Is he gonna pull up? Is he gonna try to get by me?&rdquo; His jab step was one of the best ever. I wish I could&rsquo;ve faced off against T-Mac more.

Guarding Legends: Corey Brewer on defending Kobe, D-Wade, Dirk, more

It's fair to say that New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson hasn't had the ideal start to his young NBA career. 
Playing in just 114 games across four seasons, injuries have kept Williamson from solidifying himself as a top player in the NBA. However, when healthy, Zion has produced at a high level and his play has certainly silenced any doubts about his long-term potential.
During the 2020-21 season &ndash; just his second year in the league &ndash; Williamson averaged 27 points on 61.1% from the field, setting the NBA record for highest points-per-game total for a player shooting above 60% from the field. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 20.3 points in the paint that year, the most since 7-foot-1 center Shaquille O&rsquo;Neal in 2000 (when O&rsquo;Neal won the NBA's MVP award). Williamson also led the league in layups with 441, which was 170 more than the next-closest player (Giannis Antetokounmpo). 
Last season, after only playing in 29 games, Williamson was named an All-Star starter after averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.
Zion&rsquo;s issues clearly are not about his production on the court, but rather how to keep him there.&nbsp;
That terrific sophomore season was cut short due to a fractured thumb, and then Zion missed the following season with a Jones fracture in his right foot. While Williamson was voted an All-Star starter last year, a hamstring injury kept him out of the All-Star game and then caused him to miss the remainder of the season.
Williamson's injury history is concerning as is, but these long stints spent recovering have also brought skepticism. Questions have surfaced about Williamson&rsquo;s weight, with reports back in 2021 suggesting that Zion was over 300 pounds. Other reports suggested that Williamson was not taking his weight control seriously.
In fact, the Pelicans even added weight-related stipulations to his five-year, $193 million max contract. Williamson has&nbsp;periodic weigh-ins and &ldquo;the sum of his weight and body fat percentage must be below 295,&rdquo; according to <a href="https://www.nola.com/sports/pelicans/article_85296674-00a5-11ed-97cb-ef28af9a5590.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Christian Clark of NOLA.com</a>.&nbsp;If this number is above 295, the team can reduce his guaranteed money.
Williamson recently spoke out to Gilbert Arenas about his struggles with proper dieting on "Gil's Arena."
&ldquo;There are times when I will say, &lsquo;Man, that sh*t hard. It's hard, man... Feeling like all the money in the world [won't help], man. It is hard," Williamson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_NKA6EJa9A" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. "But I&rsquo;m at that point now where, because of certain things, I&rsquo;m putting back wisdom around me &ndash; a bunch of, I don't want to say 'older' [people] because they take offense to it, but I'm just putting people around me with wisdom, who put me on game to certain things and just go from there.&rdquo;

With the former No. 1 overall pick looking to be in incredible shape based on recent photos from his offseason workouts, the league may be at Williamson&rsquo;s mercy once again. Zion&rsquo;s dominant play last year led the Pelicans to the top seed in the Western Conference for some time in December. 
If he is truly as healthy and in shape as he looks, this could be the year the league must finally acknowledge Zion Williamson.&nbsp;

Pelicans star Zion Williamson poised to silence critics this season

On Saturday, the Enemies and Triplets will battle for the BIG3 championship at The O2 Arena in London.
The Enemies feature Nick Young (the team's captain), Isaiah Austin (co-captain), Elijah Stewart (co-captain), Quincy Miller and Jordan Crawford, with Gilbert Arenas serving as the team's coach.
The Triplets have many familar faces, including Joe Johnson (the team's captain), Jeremy Pargo (co-captain), Larry Sanders, Jamario Moon, Damien Wilkins and Mo Charlo, with Lisa Leslie as their coach.
The Enemies earned a spot in the championship game by defeating three-time champions Trilogy, 50-37. All-Star standout Jordan Crawford led the way with 27 points. This is the Enemies' first-ever championship appearance.
The Triplets won the BIG3 championship back in 2019 and hope to earn their second title this weekend. They advanced to the title game after beating the Ghost Ballers, 50-45. The driving force behind their deep postseason run is back-to-back MVP Joe Johnson (who has a shot at winning a third-straight MVP award).
Prior to the championship matchup, the BIG3 All-Star game will also take place this weekend at The O2 Arena. The game will feature the following All-Stars: Michael Beasley, Jodie Meeks, Jordan Crawford, Mike Taylor, Donte Green, Glen Rice, Earl Clark, Ryan Carter, Joe Johnson, Jeremy Pargo, Leandro Barbosa, Gerald Green, Elijah Stewart, Royce White, Frank Nitty and Jason Richardson.
Both the All-Star game and championship game will be broadcast live on CBS. The All-Star game tips off at 1 p.m. ET, followed by the championship game at 2 p.m. ET.&nbsp;
This is the sixth season of Ice Cube's three-on-three league, and the BIG3 has experienced significant growth in <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/big3-basketball-viewership-keeps-growing-as-sixth-season-continues" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viewership</a> and <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/big3-sees-surge-in-tv-ratings-attendance-to-start-sixth-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attendance</a> numbers this year.

The NBA Draft isn't an exact science, and there are many examples of prospects who slip through the cracks and become franchise-changing players.&nbsp;
Today, let's look back on some of the biggest draft steals in NBA history.
Nikola Jokic, No. 41 overall in 2014
Coming from Serbia, Nikola Jokic was relatively unknown entering the 2014 NBA Draft. When the Denver Nuggets snagged the versatile big man with the No. 41 overall pick, nobody could have expected him to become a two-time MVP, a Finals MVP and one of most skilled centers of all-time. Jokic is the lowest-drafted MVP in NBA history and it isn't close, since every other Most Valuable Player was a top-15 pick. Just to give you an idea of how overlooked Jokic was entering the NBA, Nuggets GM Tim Connelly wasn't asked a single question about Jokic during his post-draft press conference back in 2014. Every question from the assembled media was about Jusuf Nurkic or Gary Harris, causing Connelly to comment, "So, no one wants to ask about our second-round pick Nikola Jokic? We are really excited about him.&rdquo; Perhaps the lack of buzz was due to the fact that Jokic was selected during a Taco Bell commercial.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, No. 15 overall in 2013
Entering the 2013 NBA Draft, there was a bit of buzz about Giannis Antetokounmpo given his length and athleticism, but he was incredibly raw. Some scouts and executives had seen him play overseas, but the competition was deemed to be weak. Nobody knew what to expect from the young, lanky project from Greece. The Milwaukee Bucks decided to draft him with the No. 15 overall pick, and their gamble paid off spectacularly. Antetokounmpo developed into a generational talent, winning multiple MVP awards and leading the Bucks to their first NBA championship in decades. What makes Giannis slipping to No. 15 look even worse is the fact that many players who went ahead of him ultimately struggled, including Anthony Bennett (No. 1), Cody Zeller (No. 4), Alex Len (No. 5), Nerlens Noel (No. 6), Ben McLemore (No. 7), Trey Burke (No. 9), Michael Carter-Williams (No. 10) and Shabazz Muhammad (No. 14).
Kobe Bryant, No. 13 overall in 1996
In 1996, the Charlotte Hornets selected a teenage Kobe Bryant with the 13th pick and immediately traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Vlade Divac. This move was undoubtedly one of the biggest draft blunders in NBA history, as Bryant became one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. His work ethic, talent and competitive spirit allowed him to become a five-time NBA champion, an NBA MVP and one of the game's all-time greats. While <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/revisiting-the-starstudded-1996-nba-draft-kobe-bryant-ray-allen-steve-nash-allen-iverson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the 1996 NBA Draft was loaded</a>, players like Todd Fuller, Samaki Walker and Vitaly Potapenko had no business being drafted before Kobe. It's worth noting that Bryant was the first guard to enter the NBA straight out of high school, which scared some teams off.
Draymond Green, No. 35 overall in 2012
Draymond Green slipped to the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft because he was viewed as a "tweener" without a clear-cut position. However, Green's success helped eradicate that term, as teams started seeing the value in versatile players who could fill multiple roles. Green's defensive prowess and basketball IQ have been instrumental during the Golden State Warriors' dynastic run. With his fiery leadership and two-way impact, Draymond is widely regarded as the Warriors' heart and soul. Also, his resume is incredible: four NBA championships, a Defensive Player of the Year award, four All-Star appearances, two All-NBA selections and eight All-Defensive Team nods.&nbsp;

Kawhi Leonard, No. 15 overall in 2011
One of the most shocking storylines during the 2011 NBA Draft was Kawhi Leonard slipping outside of the lottery. Finally, the Indiana Pacers drafted Leonard with the 15th overall pick and quickly traded him to the San Antonio Spurs for George Hill. It didn't take long for Leonard to make the teams that passed on him look foolish. Right away, Leonard made an impact with his lockdown defense and improved jumpshot. He played a huge role in the Spurs' 2014 title, taking home the Finals MVP award. Leonard just kept getting better and better until it became clear that he was a superstar and one of the game's most dominant two-way threats. Now, he's a two-time NBA champion, two-time Finals MVP, two-time Defensive Player of the Year and five-time All-NBA selection, as well as a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
Manu Ginobili, No. 57 overall in 1999
Manu Ginobili spent the first few years of his career playing overseas, where he was very successful. While he was drafted with the 57th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Ginobili would ultimately remain abroad until the 2002-03 NBA season when he finally joined the Spurs as a 25-year-old. Ginobili's fearless style of play and exceptional basketball IQ turned him into a key cog in the Spurs' dynasty. Ginobili became a four-time NBA champion, an Olympic goal medalist, a Sixth Man of the Year and a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. Not bad for someone who was nearly Mr. Irrelevant!
Isaiah Thomas, No. 60 overall in 2011
Speaking of Mr. Irrelevant, Isaiah Thomas was the 60th and final pick of the 2011 NBA Draft. Thomas thrived in Sacramento and had a brief stint in Phoenix, but he played his best basketball in Boston. At the height of his stint with the Celtics, Thomas averaged nearly 30 points per game &ndash; becoming a two-time All-Star and a fan favorite. Thomas is the ultimate underdog, from his draft-day story to his 5-foot-9 frame. Thomas proved his doubters wrong and became one of the league's most exciting scorers before injuries impacted his game.
Gilbert Arenas, No. 31 overall in 2001
Gilbert Arenas slipped to the 31st overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, where he was ultimately selected by the Golden State Warriors. Despite slipping into the second round, Arenas' terrific scoring ability allowed him to become one of the most exciting guards of his era. His time with the Wizards was particularly memorable, as "Agent Zero" was a three-time All-Star during his stint in Washington. It's worth noting that Arenas played so well as a second-rounder that the NBA added <a href="https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/03/hoops-rumors-glossary-gilbert-arenas-provision-4.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Gilbert Arenas Provision</a> in the CBA, which made it easier for teams to keep talented second-rounders or undrafted players who hit restricted free agency after breaking out.
Steve Nash, No. 15 overall in 1996
Selected with the 15th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, Steve Nash was not an immediate superstar. However, with his exceptional court vision and terrific work ethic, he transformed himself into one of the most skilled point guards of his generation. While leading the Suns' high-octane offense, Nash won back-to-back MVP awards in 2005 and 2006. In addition to being a two-time NBA MVP, Nash would become an eight-time All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection, five-time assist champion, first-ballot Hall-of-Famer and a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.

Hidden gems: Examining the 9 biggest draft steals in NBA history

CLEVELAND (AP) &mdash; Julius Randle joked about being out of shape and Josh Hart walked into the postgame news conference wearing&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://twitter.com/KnicksMSGN/status/1647411361801027584?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a T-shirt with a photo of teammate Jalen Brunson</a>&nbsp;on the front.
The Knicks could finally relax.
Finally at full strength, and following a worrisome few weeks, New York&rsquo;s season looks much brighter.
Brunson shook off foul trouble and scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half, Randle returned from an ankle injury to add 19 &mdash; and a critical final rebound &mdash; and the Knicks welcomed Cleveland back to the NBA playoffs by holding off the Cavaliers 101-97 on Saturday night in Game 1.
Brunson was limited to nine minutes in the first half, but hit several big shots down the stretch as the Knicks turned back Cleveland&rsquo;s late rally led by All-Star Donovan Mitchell, who finished with 38 points.
With the Knicks clinging to a 99-97 lead, Brunson missed a pullup with nine seconds left and Randle bailed out New York with his 10th rebound &mdash; and the team&rsquo;s 17th offensive board &mdash; that led to Quentin Grimes making two free throws to seal the win.
"You can&rsquo;t say enough about the monster rebound Julius made at the end,&rdquo; Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. &ldquo;That rebound was huge. Huge.&rdquo;
Randle hadn&rsquo;t played since March 29 because of a sprained left ankle, and said he was thankful he had enough energy for one last jump.
&ldquo;You see me breathing out there today?&rdquo; said Randle, who played 34 minutes. &ldquo;I was tired as hell. But it was just about winning at that point.&rdquo;
Randle was reminded that the Knicks had a similar play in Game 1 against Atlanta in 2021 but didn&rsquo;t come up with the ball.
&ldquo;Funny how things turn, right,&rdquo; he said.
Game 2 is Tuesday at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
Mitchell scored 14 points in the fourth, but it wasn&rsquo;t enough for the young Cavs, who disappointed a raucous, towel-waving Cleveland crowd that hadn&rsquo;t seen a playoff game since the 2018 NBA Finals.
It&rsquo;s been a long road back for Cleveland, which wasn&rsquo;t as hurt by its inexperience as lack of production from the bench.
&ldquo;First off, this isn&rsquo;t the end of the world. We got to go get one right back,&rdquo; Mitchell said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no room to sit here and feel sorry or feel upset and get down. It&rsquo;s one game. We will respond.&rdquo;
Hart added 17 points &mdash; and hit a big 3-pointer down the stretch &mdash; and 10 rebounds in his playoff debut for New York, whose reserves outscored the Cavs 37-14.
Darius Garland scored 17 points and Jarrett Allen had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland. Evan Mobley had eight points of 4-of-13 shooting.
Randle missed New York&rsquo;s final five games after rolling his ankle on March 29, and the injury threatened to thwart New York&rsquo;s playoff hopes. However, he improved this week despite not taking much contact in practice and looked like himself from the outset.
His presence lifted the Knicks.
&ldquo;Seeing No. 30 out there was just a great sight,&rdquo; said Obi Toppin, who scored nine points in the third quarter.
Brunson picked up his second foul with 7:52 left in the first quarter, and Thibodeau had no choice but to replace the guard, who scored a career-high 48 points against the Cavs on March 31 &mdash; the first game Randle missed.
Brunson&rsquo;s foul trouble had Hart concerned he made a poor fashion choice.

SCARY MOMENT
Mitchell landed hard on his lower back after vaulting off a courtside table and landing several rows into the stands while saving a loose ball in the second quarter.
He winced in pain while behind helped up and returning to the floor. Mitchell then thanked fans who cushioned his fall during a subsequent timeout.
&ldquo;I jumped at them intentionally, but they moved,&rdquo; said Mitchell, who sustained a small cut on his arm. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t blame them. I probably would have done the same thing. It&rsquo;s all love.&rdquo;

Ja Morant will be away from the Memphis Grizzlies for at least their next two games, the team announced Saturday, not long after the NBA opened an investigation into a social media post by the guard after he livestreamed himself holding what appeared to be a gun at a nightclub.
Morant said in a statement distributed through the agency that represents him that he takes &ldquo;full responsibility&rdquo; for his actions &mdash; adding that he was going to &ldquo;take some time away to get help.&rdquo;
The video was streamed by Morant on his Instagram page early Saturday, hours after the Grizzlies played in Denver. They were flying to Los Angeles on Saturday for games against the Clippers on Sunday and the Lakers on Tuesday.

Morant will miss those two games, at minimum, the Grizzlies said, without any further comment.
&ldquo;We are aware of a social media post involving Ja Morant and are investigating,&rdquo; NBA spokesman Mike Bass said earlier Saturday.
The league will try to speak with Morant as part of that investigation, though it is unclear when any meeting may occur. Morant apologized in the statement released by Tandem Sports + Entertainment.
&ldquo;I take full responsibility for my actions last night,&rdquo; Morant said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down. I&rsquo;m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.&rdquo;
It was not immediately clear what Morant meant by &ldquo;help&rdquo; or if he planned to be away from the team for longer than the two-game minimum announced by the Grizzlies.
The league, if it finds wrongdoing, could fine or suspend Morant. Based on the Grizzlies&rsquo; statement, the earliest Morant could play again is Thursday at home against Golden State. His Instagram and Twitter accounts were disabled shortly after the Grizzlies announced his absence.
Memphis is currently No. 2 in the Western Conference standings, led by Morant, a two-time All-Star averaging 27.1 points and 8.2 assists per game.
This is at least the second time in the last few weeks that Morant has been the subject of a league investigation. Morant&rsquo;s actions were investigated by the league after a&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/memphis-grizzlies-indiana-pacers-nba-sports-temetrius-morant-691ebf33edbf85aef5db428406c8976e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jan. 29 incident in Memphis</a>&nbsp;that he said led to a friend of his being banned from home games there for a year.
That incident was following a game against the Indiana Pacers; citing unnamed sources, The Indianapolis Star and USA Today reported that multiple members of the Pacers saw a red dot pointed at them, and The Athletic reported that a Pacers security guard believed the laser was attached to a gun.
The NBA confirmed that unnamed individuals were banned from the arena but said its investigation found no evidence that anyone was threatened with a weapon.
Morant responded to that incident by tweeting that the reports &ldquo;paint this negative image on me and my fam. &amp; banned my brother from home games for a year. unbelievable.&rdquo; During the Jan. 29 game, there was barking between Pacers players and friends of Morant seated along the sideline. A close friend of Morant&rsquo;s, Davonte Pack, was escorted from the arena as Pacers bench players shouted in Pack&rsquo;s direction.
Pack and Morant also are involved in a civil lawsuit brought after an incident at Morant&rsquo;s home this past summer, in which a 17-year-old alleged that they assaulted him. The Shelby County district attorney&rsquo;s office said in January that it was &ldquo;aware of the incident, and after careful review of the facts, decided that there was not enough evidence to proceed with a case.&rdquo;
There is precedent for the NBA when sanctioning a player over conduct involving guns. In January 2010, then-Commissioner David Stern suspended Washington&rsquo;s Gilbert Arenas indefinitely without pay after saying the player&rsquo;s behavior made him &ldquo;not currently fit to take the court.&rdquo;
The suspension followed Arenas getting photographed before a game in Philadelphia playfully pointing his index fingers in a gun imitation at his teammates while he was under investigation by federal and local authorities after admittedly bringing guns into the Wizards&rsquo; locker room.
Arenas ultimately missed 50 games, the rest of the 2009-10 season.
Morant, the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, has become a full-fledged superstar. His five-year, $194 million extension with the Grizzlies kicks in to start next season and would rise to about $230 million if he makes an All-NBA team this season.
He also is a sought-after endorser. On Christmas, Nike unveiled Morant&rsquo;s first signature shoe, which is set to be released in the coming weeks. And earlier this week, Powerade announced a multiyear endorsement deal with Morant.
On the same day the Powerade deal was revealed, The Washington Post published a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/03/01/ja-morant-punch-teen-laser/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">story</a>, based on police records it obtained, detailing how Morant and some associates &ldquo;have been accused of threatening and even violent behavior,&rdquo; the newspaper said.
The questions about Morant&rsquo;s conduct come at a time when gun violence again is a prominent talking point in the sports world.
Top NBA draft prospect Brandon Miller and his Alabama teammate Jaden Bradley, by courtroom revelations, have been&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-sports-tuscaloosa-alabama-crimson-tide-top-25-college-basketball-today-39eab4a038324d58910da79372722ad1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">linked to the scene of a killing</a>. Neither has been charged or accused of a crime, but then-teammate Darius Miles and another man are facing capital murder charges.
And New Mexico State&rsquo;s men&rsquo;s basketball season was shut down in February because of a&nbsp;<a class="paragraph-link" href="https://apnews.com/article/new-mexico-state-basketball-shooting-crisis-d2b20604aa91ddc11cc32a4f12e660f6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fatal shooting and allegations of locker-room hazing</a>. Mike Peake, the New Mexico State player implicated in the shooting death of New Mexico player Brandon Travis in November, said he was acting in self-defense and has not been charged with a crime.

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; Devin Booker dribbled toward the left corner 3-point line with two Pelicans in hot pursuit before rising up for an off-balance jumper. Coach Monty Williams wasn't sure that was a great idea.
&ldquo;I couldn't make that shot,&rdquo; Williams said grinning.
But Booker can. And he did.
The three-time All-Star put on a show with one of the best scoring games of his career, pouring in 58 points to nearly single-handedly push the Phoenix Suns past New Orleans 118-114 on Saturday night.
The Suns earned the comeback win barely one week after losing to the Pelicans twice in New Orleans. Booker prides himself as a team player and a willing passer, but on Saturday night, he realized he had the hot hand.
&ldquo;Once I get it going a little bit, shooting over a hand is the right play," Booker said.
It&rsquo;s the second time this season Booker has topped 50 points &mdash; he scored 51 against Chicago at home Nov. 30 in just three quarters.
This effort was even more impressive because it brought the Suns back from a 24-point deficit. The three-time All-Star made 21 of 35 shots, including 6 of 12 3-pointers. He added five rebounds, five assists and played the entire second half.
The Phoenix bench and fans loved every minute of it. New Orleans? Not so much.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t enjoy watching somebody score 58 points on us,&rdquo; Pelicans guard C.J. McCollum said. &ldquo;It is not enjoyable.&rdquo;
The Pelicans led 83-59 midway through the third quarter, but the Suns used a 25-6 run to cut that advantage to 89-84 going into the fourth. Booker scored 20 points in the third, willing his team back into contention.
&ldquo;It's unreal,&rdquo; Paul said. &ldquo;I've had the opportunity to play with a lot of greats &mdash; Blake Griffin, James Harden and now Book. Sheesh, you just try not to get caught watching.&rdquo;
Phoenix tied it at 99 with 7:04 left on Josh Okogie's free throw. Booker scored a stunning 25 points in a row for the Suns before Okogie&rsquo;s two free throws, making just about everything he tossed toward the rim as the home crowd roared.
The Suns were clinging to a 111-109 lead when Paul made a crucial 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining. Paul finished with 18 points and eight assists.
The Suns won their second straight game while the Pelicans have dropped three in a row.
Zion Williamson led the Pelicans with 30 points and McCollum added 27. Williamson had a solid game, shooting 12 of 15 from the field, but it was completely overshadowed by Booker's performance.
&ldquo;You got to give respect when it is due,&rdquo; Williamson said. &ldquo;He put on a clinic.&rdquo;
The Pelicans pushed to a 34-27 lead after one quarter while shooting 67% from the field. McCollum had 15 points, making 6 of 7 shots, including three 3-pointers.
New Orleans stretched its lead to 63-46 by halftime. Booker scored 22 points before the break on 8-of-13 shooting, but the rest of the Suns shot just 8 of 31 from the field.
&ldquo;We couldn't throw it in the ocean if we had been on a boat,&rdquo; Williams said.
Booker broke the arena record, topping a 54-point game by Gilbert Arenas in 2006 for Washington.

PHOENIX (AP) &mdash; Devin Booker made the Chicago Bulls pay for some mediocre defense with a couple early mid-range jumpers. Then he made a few more. And a few more.
Suddenly, it was one of those nights for the Suns All-Star guard.
&ldquo;It felt like a double-sized rim out there,&rdquo; Booker said. &ldquo;If I rise up, it&rsquo;s going in.&rdquo;
Booker scored a season-high 51 points in just three quarters, Deandre Ayton had 30 points and 14 rebounds and Phoenix stretched its winning streak to six games with a 132-113 victory Wednesday night.
Booker scored 25 points in the first half and had 26 more in a sublime third quarter that included 10 of 11 shooting. After a contested 3-pointer splashed through the net, &ldquo;MVP! MVP!&rdquo; chants broke out across Footprint Center, and the 26-year-old is certainly making an early season case.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s the best,&rdquo; Booker said about the home crowd. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know how many sellout crowds that is in a row, but it&rsquo;s impressive. Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays, it doesn&rsquo;t matter what day of the week it is. They show up and show out.&rdquo;
The three-time All-Star had a steal late in the third before sprinting downcourt and flushing home a dunk for his 50th and 51st points. He added six assists and four rebounds.
"A guy like that gets in a rhythm and it&rsquo;s too late," Bulls guard Zach LaVine said. &ldquo;He gets it going and it&rsquo;s over.&rdquo;
Booker didn't play in the fourth quarter with the Suns holding a healthy lead.
Even more remarkable than Booker's point total was his efficiency. He shot 20 of 25 from the field, going 6 of 7 from 3-point range. He is <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNStatsInfo/status/1598163256752967680">the second player over the last 25 years</a> with 50 points and 80% shooting through the first three quarters of a game, joining James Harden in 2017, according to ESPN Stats and Info.
&ldquo;There's not a level where he can't score,&rdquo; Suns coach Monty Williams said. &ldquo;He can use both hands, he can score with a hand in his face and he's willing to take the tough shots.&rdquo;
It was Booker's second straight 40-point game. He had 44 in a victory at Sacramento on Monday night. The Suns have the best record in the Western Conference at 15-6 and have won 12 out of 13 home games.
The Bulls struggled on defense the entire night, particularly against Booker and Ayton. Chicago coach Billy Donovan was particularly irritated in the third quarter, angrily calling a time out after Phoenix scored a couple easy buckets.
DeMar DeRozan led Chicago with 29 points. Zach LaVine added 21.
The Suns took a 64-43 lead at halftime. Booker roasted the Bulls with 25 points before the break, repeatedly finding open mid-range jump shots.
&ldquo;We threw everything at him,&rdquo; Donovan said. "We trapped him, we threw a box and one at him. We tried to face guard him and to his credit had had a great night.
Phoenix shot 58% in the first half. Chicago made just 1 of 14 (7.1%) of its 3-point attempts.

This glossary is courtesy of <a href="http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Larry Coon's NBA Salary Cap FAQ</a>, which has everything you could possibly want to know abot the NBA's CBA and salary cap.
Salary Cap 
The NBA salary cap is a limit that teams can spend on player contracts, which helps to maintain competitive balance in the league. The basic idea behind a salary cap is that a team can only sign a free agent if its total payroll will not exceed the cap, so a team with deep pockets is on a more level playing field with every other team. For the 2022-23 season, the salary cap is $122 million.
Soft Cap 
The NBA has a soft cap. A hard cap cannot be exceeded for any reason. A soft cap contains exceptions that allow teams to sign players or make trades that exceed the cap under certain conditions. In practice, few NBA teams are under the cap during a season. The soft cap promotes a team's ability to retain its own players. Certain components of the NBA's system function as a hard cap under specific circumstances.
Luxury Tax 
The luxury tax is a mechanism that helps control team spending. It is paid by high spending teams &mdash; those with a team salary exceeding a predetermined tax level. These teams pay a penalty for each dollar their team salary exceeds the tax level. For example, a team with a salary that's $12 million over the tax level would have to pay a tax of $21.25 million. In addition to the financial penalties, a number of restrictions are placed on taxpaying teams. For the 2022-23 season, the luxury tax is $149 million.
Apron
If a team's luxury tax bill goes above the "apron," they are subject to further restrictions. Last season, the apron was $6.3 million above the tax threshold. For example, teams that are above the apron can't use the bi-annual exception, can't acquire any players via sign-and-trade and they have a smaller mid-level exception.
Hard Cap 
If a team is hard-capped, it cannot exceed the apron under any circumstances. If a team subsequently needs to sign a player, they must first create room under the apron by waiving, stretching or trading players. When a team is below the apron and uses their bi-annual exception, acquires a player via sign-and-trade or uses their mid-level exception to sign a player to a contract larger than allowed by the taxpayer mid-level exception, the team becomes hard-capped at the apron for the remainder of that season.
Unrestricted Free Agent 
An unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any other team and there's nothing the player's original team can do to prevent it.
Restricted Free Agent 
Restricted free agency gives the player's original team the right to keep the player by matching a contract the player signs with another team. Once a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with another team, their original team has two days to match the offer.
Option Clauses 
An option clause allows a contract to be extended for one additional season after the date it is scheduled to end. For example, a three-year contract with an option for the fourth year means that if the option is exercised, then the contract extends through the fourth season. But if the option is not exercised, then the contract ends after the third season. Once exercised, an option cannot be revoked. Conditional options are not allowed. There are three types of options:
<ul>
<li>Team Options give the team the right to invoke the option. There can be only one option year (except in the case of rookie-scale contracts).</li>
<li>Player Options give the player the right to invoke the option. There can be only one option year.</li>
<li>Player Early Termination Options (ETOs) give the player the right to terminate the contract early. An ETO can't occur prior to the end of fourth season of the contract (which implies that the contract must be for five seasons). An ETO is not allowed in a veteran extension.</li>
</ul>
Repeater Tax 
If a team has paid the luxury tax in at least three of the four previous seasons (not including the most recent season), they are a "repeat offender." They are taxed $2.50 for each dollar spent above the tax level rather than the usual $1.50 (or more depending on how much they've exceeded the luxury tax). For example, a repeater team that is $4 million over the tax level would have to pay a tax of $10 million.
Bird Rights 
The Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the cap in order to re-sign their own free agents up to the player's maximum salary. Teams are said to have "Bird rights" to players who qualify. To qualify for this exception, a player essentially must play for three seasons without clearing waivers or changing teams as a free agent (although there are nuances). This means a player can qualify by playing under three consecutive one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years or any equivalent combination. When a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Larry Bird exception to re-sign him. These contracts can be up to five years in length, with raises up to 8% of the salary in the first season of the contract.
Sign-and-Trade 
This allows teams to re-sign their own free agents and immediately trade them to another team. This is done by adding a clause to the contract stipulating that the contract is null and void if the trade to the specific team is not completed within 48 hours. A sign-and-trade is treated like a single, atomic transaction, and not two separate transactions between which one party can change its mind &mdash; if the trade is not completed, then the signing is invalidated. Sign-and-trade contracts must be for at least three seasons (not including any option year) and no longer than four seasons. The first year of the contract must be fully guaranteed, but the remaining seasons can be non-guaranteed. If a team acquires a player in a sign-and-trade, then the apron effectively becomes a hard cap for the remainder of the season.
Mid-Level Exception 
This exception allows a team to sign any free agent to a contract with a starting salary up to $10,095,000 for non-taxpayers and $6,149,000 for taxpayers. Teams can use the mid-level exception (MLE) in consecutive years. Also, this exception may be split and given to multiple players. The MLE is available only when a team is below the apron. This determination is made after the exception is used, so a team below the apron cannot use this exception if doing so takes them above the apron.
Bi-Annual Exception 
This exception allows a team to sign any free agents to a contract with a starting salary of $3,951,000. It can be used to sign players for up to two years, with raises limited to 5% of the salary in the first season of the contract. It may be split and given to more than one player. This exception may not be used two years in a row. This exception is available only when a team is below the apron, and it cannot be used by a team that has already used its taxpayer mid-level exception or room mid-level exception.
Gilbert Arenas Provision 
Teams are limited in the salary they can offer to a restricted free agent with one or two years in the league. The first-year salary in the offer sheet cannot be greater than the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. Limiting the first-year salary in this way enables the player's original team to match the offer sheet by using the Early Bird exception (if applicable) or non-taxpayer mid-level exception (provided the team has it and didn't already use it).
Stretch Provision 
If a team waives a player whose contract has more than $250,000 of remaining guaranteed salary, the guaranteed salary for the remaining seasons is "stretched" and paid in equal amounts over a greater time span. The guaranteed salary is then paid over twice the number of years remaining on his contract, plus one.
Two-Way Contract 
A two-way player is a hybrid of a standard NBA player and a G League player. A player on a two-way contract is principally a G League player, but he can spend up to 45 days with his affiliate NBA team. His salary is prorated by day, depending on which team he is on, and he can only play for the affiliated NBA team while on a two-way contract &ndash; he can&rsquo;t be poached by another NBA team. A two-way player differs from a regular G League player because he receives a higher salary and can be called up to the parent NBA club while remaining under his two-way contract.

NBA free-agency glossary: Relevant salary-cap terms to know

A few weeks after the surgery that ultimately ended his season, Bradley Beal was talking with reporters when he was asked a simple question: Was it fair to say he was leaning toward re-signing with Washington?
&ldquo;It's fair,&rdquo; Beal said in early March, without offering any more assurance than that.
Now the Wizards embark on a massive offseason, and all eyes are on Beal, who can become a free agent this summer. His next move will obviously have a big impact on the franchise's direction.
Beal had surgery in February on his left wrist and didn't play again. A Washington team that started fast under new coach Wes Unseld Jr. ended up going 35-47 and missing the playoffs.
Washington began the season by winning 10 of its first 13 games. <a href="https://apnews.com/0a2695fdd5ae8dd8fe48470ed51ef2e9">The trade</a> that sent Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers was paying dividends, with Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell all contributing after coming to Washington in that deal.
By the time Beal went down, however, the Wizards were already slipping. That injury certainly didn't help their prospects, and they ended up making <a href="https://apnews.com/article/washington-wizards-nba-sports-spencer-dinwiddie-davis-bertans-f47895e153d50f9b23d4d5ce09121a0d">more significant moves</a> at the deadline. Spencer Dinwiddie, who was acquired to play point guard before the season, was dealt to Dallas in a deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Washington. The Wizards also traded Harrell.
The 7-foot-3 Porzingis played well for Washington, averaging 22.1 points in 17 games for the Wizards. He never got to play alongside Beal, and the question now is whether he'll have that chance next season.
&ldquo;Slowly, we're kind of figuring each other out, especially my teammates with me, because I just got here," Porzingis said late this season. &ldquo;I think we're still pretty far away from where we want to be, in terms of chemistry and stuff like that, but it's not bad for this short a period of time. It's pretty good. I'm excited to see what's ahead of us.&rdquo;
AT THE POINT
The point guard spot has often been a strength for Washington, with Westbrook, John Wall and Gilbert Arenas having occupied it. Dinwiddie had big shoes to fill when he arrived, and his tenure with the Wizards didn't last long. Now Washington needs to find another solution.
DEFENSIVE ISSUES
The Wizards remain a work in progress on defense after Unseld's first season. They finished 25th in the league in defensive rating.
&ldquo;We had to change how we defended certain things, pretty much in the middle of the season," Unseld said. "A bit of a hiccup, but that's what we had. So we had to adjust things a little bit, and it took a little time to get back on track in that area.&rdquo;
Washington ranked last in the NBA in steals.
LONG DISTANCE
The Wizards also finished last in the league in made 3-pointers, but in this area, their defense did succeed. No team held opponents to fewer 3-point attempts than Washington, and only two teams allowed fewer made 3s.
NEW ADDITIONS
Kuzma averaged 17.1 points, his highest average since his second season with the Lakers in 2018-19. Caldwell-Pope averaged 13.2 points.
EFFICIENT
Daniel Gafford averaged a career-high 9.4 points per game on 69% shooting from the field. The 23-year-old Gafford doesn't have the height of Porzingis, but his athleticism could be an asset for the Wizards in the seasons to come.
&ldquo;I think overall, he's shown growth in a lot of areas. He still has a lot of untapped potential, in my opinion,&rdquo; Unseld said. &ldquo;He's very impressionable. I think at times, his confidence wanes, but that's all young players.&rdquo;

Even when a guy like Antoine Walker writes a book about making $108 million and then going broke, you still wonder how that&rsquo;s possible, right? Well, Gilbert Arenas shared a story about his rookie year that will paint a perfect picture.
Every player gets an estimate of where he should expect to get drafted. After checking which teams are expected to pick at those spots, the very next thing is to check the rookie salary in those ranges. Being told he&rsquo;d be a top 10 draft pick was music to Arenas' ears. Agent Zero got himself an expensive chain and a souped-up Escalade with five TVs and a suede roof.
When Joe Johnson got selected with the 10th pick in the 2001 Draft, Arenas was still waiting to hear his name. He would wait a bit longer, all the way to the 31st pick, falling to the second round. Suddenly, his $845,000 rookie salary wasn&rsquo;t enough to cover everything he had bought.
&ldquo;When they did my budget, I can only spend $500 a month," Arenas said in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrkHqFjmaZQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview with DJ Vlad</a>. "That&rsquo;s gas money, girlfriend, two dogs. I couldn&rsquo;t even drive back and forth to the arena. I had to say at the arena sometimes. I slept in the arena.&rdquo;
This was a sobering moment for Agent Zero. Sleeping in the gym because he couldn&rsquo;t afford gas, too proud to ask teammates to give him some money, the reality of being a professional kicked in for Arenas.
&rdquo;You&rsquo;re on you&rsquo;re own, and you have all the time in the world not to get in trouble,&rdquo; he said.

Arenas also pointed out that, at the time, you couldn't return to school.
&ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t fun. I even said then, &lsquo;I wish I could come back to college. I took a pay cut coming here," Arenas <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrkHqFjmaZQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Pay cut? But players aren&rsquo;t paid in the NCAA, right? We already covered Al Harrington sharing his experience, openly <a href="https://www.basketballnetwork.net/al-harrington-they-offered-me-cash-and-a-truck-to-join/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying a college offered him&rdquo; a truck and cash&rdquo; to join their program</a>. They even went so far as to offer to hire his mom and give Harrington $450,000.
So for a lot of prospects in that era, joining the NBA meant a pay cut and suddenly not being the best guy in the gym. Arenas said the biggest lesson he took from his rookie year was realizing he wasn&rsquo;t nearly as good as he thought he was. As hard as it was to accept that fact, the reality of his debt fueled his fire to watch film and warrant a bigger contract.
We know the story from there. Arenas retired with earnings over $160 million, so he&rsquo;s set for life. But the story about his rookie year gives us a fascinating insight into the lives of pro athletes. They can spend it as quickly as they can make it.

For those who don&rsquo;t remember Johnson in a Celtics uniform during their famous Eastern Conference Finals juggernaut run in 2002, there&rsquo;s a key reason. But hey, it&rsquo;s not like Johnson can do any harm to the Celtics&rsquo; chemistry and stylistic problems.
Would you have guessed that Johnson was a seven-time All-Star and an All-NBA player in 2010? That&rsquo;s as many All-Star appearances as Scottie Pippen, Kevin McHale and Willis Reed &ndash; all while competing with Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, Dwyane Wade, Gilbert Arenas, Vince Carter and Carmelo Anthony during his peak in the East from 2007-14.&nbsp;
Even if he doesn&rsquo;t stay past his 10-day contract, he is now on a Mount Rushmore with only Dirk Nowitzki&rsquo;s face beside him. Those accomplishments last forever.
With Lance Stephenson on the Hawks, Isaiah Thomas on the Lakers and now Johnson on the Celtics, it's only fitting to ask when Jamal Crawford is making his return. (He might be too busy with Quentin Richardson doing their &lsquo;NBA Hooper Vision&rsquo; stream for league pass games, though.)

I sat down with Gilbert Arenas for "The Rematch," and he didn&rsquo;t mince words regarding Shaq and Barkley&rsquo;s consistent criticism of Ben Simmons.

Etan Thomas: I want to ask you about this Ben Simmons situation. Now, there's a lot. It's interesting. I <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/an-open-letter-to-ben-simmons-from-etan-thomas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote an open letter to Ben Simmons</a>. And a lot of the feedback from people was that I was being too nice to Ben Simmons. And although I pointed out all of his missteps through this whole process, I didn't go just on full attack bashing him. And that's what a lot of people wanted. They wanted to have other people bash him. "He's terrible, he's weak, he's soft." And I didn't do any of that. I did the opposite of encouraging him that. "I hope that when you come out of this, that you come out with a Mamba Mentality and don't let nothing affect you," and everything like that, "But these were your missteps here all along this way." But it's interesting that so many people don't understand or can't sympathize, or even imagine how he feels.
Gilbert Arenas: Because they're looking at the basketball player, Ben Simmons. So I don't think people separate the basketball player from the human. Right? And once a Shaq or Charles Barkley say it, it becomes law. In fact, they were the same. If they want to call him a prima donna, you were the same prima donna when you were the man. It's crazy because [Simmons] is a quiet kid. He's not this rah-rah type of guy. He's a quiet kid who just wants to just play, and then if you don't [want] him, just trade me. If you want me just... He just goes with the flow.
I was with Ben a lot this summer, so I saw the work he put in. He was doing everything to get himself ready. I saw the work ethic and I'm like, "Man, you can actually shoot. You actually can shoot. You actually have form. You don't have this wicked form that's like released high. You actually have a great form. Your feet planted." So alright, what's going on here?
Etan Thomas: Let's talk about when he came back and addressed the team and said that he wasn't mentally ready to play. And I know what you're thinking, but I felt that honestly, and this was my opinion. I felt that was him being honest with them and saying not that he had mental health issues, but he basically said: Mentally, I'm not ready to come back and mess with y'all. And I thought that was a very smart move on his part because of a lot of reasons; because he could have came back and you don't know what he would've done. If he would've came back, and I'm really still beefing with you, like I'm still thinking in my mind that you threw me under the bus over here after the game and I'm looking at you &mdash; I might just crack you across your head with a chair.&nbsp;
So he's telling you, Listen, I'm telling y'all right now I'm not mentally ready to come back here with y'all. You know what I mean? And now, everybody else jumped to, "Oh, he is using mental health issues and excuse." ...But he didn't say mental health. He said he's not mentally ready to come back. And the part that I do have to say &mdash; because I'm critical of the media a lot &mdash; I did see where Shaq was on a few nights ago, and he said he had to backtrack some of the criticism that he had and educate himself on mental health issues. Even though that's not what Ben Simmons said [or meant]. But [Shaq] said, "I had to backtrack, and I am not going to bash him or anybody else that are dealing with different things and getting their mental health issues correct on the same line."
And that's what Shaq said, "So I'm backing all the way off." I got to respect that, you know what I mean? Because it means that he's going back and saying, "Okay, I was wrong for what I said earlier." I wish Stephen A. Smith would do that because when he got on &mdash; everybody remembers right after it happened &mdash; it was reported that that Ben Simmons said that he couldn't come back because he wasn't mentally ready to come back. Stephen A. Smith went right on, and he <a href="https://youtu.be/7lWvdizPXr4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went on this big rant</a> like he always does. [Smith] said, "Why didn't he say anything about mental health before? Why didn't he say this before? Why all now?"
And so he's questioning publicly, on the biggest platform in the basketball world, the validity of what Ben Simmons was saying. So that, in turn, made a lot of people then start repeating what Stephen A. Smith said. And they were literally quoting him. And I think that's where the media has a responsibility to not attempt to sway the public against players. And that, again, <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/kwame-brown-stephen-a-smith-stephen-jackson-matt-barnes-charlemagne-etan-thomas-washington-wizards-media" target="_blank" rel="noopener">going back to what Kwame Brown's point was and his issue was</a>. It was not just Stephen A. Smith, but <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/former-nba-gm-confirms-false-narratives-hurt-kwame-brown-others" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the media in general</a>, when they do that. So what was your take on when [Simmons] said he was mentally not ready to play?
Gilbert Arenas: Okay, so you got to understand where the ESPNs and all these guys stand. That's their job to sway the public. You got to remember: They don't need the athlete. They don't need us to report about us.
Etan Thomas: Oh, that's true.
Gilbert Arenas: Right? So they don't need us. So it's like, "I can say you're good. I can say you're bad. But I don't need to have a conversation with you to do that." So these guys in the media don't need the athletes. So they don't need to talk to Kyrie [Irving] and Kevin Durant, but they get to report on them all the time. Half of these reporters couldn't even get a sit-down with these players at this point in their careers. You have bashed these guys for so long that they don't want nothing to do with you, but it's still going to make your point against them. Charles Barkley go up there and Shaq and talk about prima donnas: "Y'all are too soft on these guys."
Etan Thomas: Yeah, I hate that.
Gilbert Arenas: First of all, Shaquille, didn't you push to get a trade from Orlando because a guy got more popular than you? That's prima donna. I want to move because he got a Penny [Hardaway] doll? I've seen your commercials back in the day where the Penny doll was on the couch and you slapped it off. Now, you guys are bickering. I was a Penny fan. That is bickering. That is babying. So the things that some of the older guys go at the young guys, I'm like, you did the same exact thing, so you know how he feels. So since you know how he feels, you should be able to help him through this process because you know what's going to actually happen at the end of this.

In a lengthy response to a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVX4ZOHrXYc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post by Etan Thomas on Instagram</a>, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas said that the Philadelphia 76ers lacked accountability in the situation surrounding Ben Simmons.
"Instead of being accountable for their role, his own TEAMMATES used him as the excuse, which is a no-no," Arenas wrote. He referenced Simmons' defensive performance against Trae Young in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and also referred to other mistakes in critical NBA games past, including the Cavs in the 2018 Finals.
"A player knows when he f*cks up and has to live with that, but when [your] own brothers throw [you] under the bus for a moment or a few bad games, there's no coming back... It's us against the world and when [you] get outcasted, [you] never trust that group again," he added.
Simmons recently told Sixers teammates and medical personnel that he is "not mentally ready" to play for the team. The star guard has yet to play in games since that loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference Finals.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Man, I was kind of shocked because I thought I was going to Sacramento, like the Sacramento deal with Buddy Hield. Like, that sh** was done... But then out of nowhere, it goes &lsquo;You&rsquo;re going to Washington.&rsquo; But I was super hyped, obviously, because it&rsquo;s like a better situation,&rdquo; Kuzma <a href="https://youtu.be/_ZDd6oZE3oc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Kuzma's name had been in the rumor mill for quite some time &mdash; even before the actual trade happened. Kuzma&rsquo;s decline in production irked some fans who originally felt it was better to keep him over Brandon Ingram; we all know who went to become an All-Star in his first year away from L.A.
Kuzma is close friends with his old Lakers' teammates; LeBron James and Jared Dudley even gave him a send-off celebration. It may seem like everything&rsquo;s okay between both parties, but the 4-year veteran recently posted something interesting on his Instagram story. He later deleted it, but not without fans taking a screenshot of it first.

This was most likely all in good fun, but every joke has some truth. Don&rsquo;t forget the drama surrounding LeBron losing the locker room in his first year with the Lakers, when it became apparent he was pushing to trade all the young players for Anthony Davis. Kuzma was the only guy who survived the Davis trade, only to get shipped out of L.A. for Westbrook this past summer. There are a lot of young guys who may love LeBron the player, but aren&rsquo;t fans of LeBron the general manager.
What&rsquo;s next for Kuzma?
The next chapter for Kuz has come in Washington. He should get a lot of minutes with the Wizards, but without the bright lights and the pressure playing for the Lakers brings. Kuzma should fit well with Bradley Beal, who is still searching for his first NBA championship.
In his first game as a Wizard, despite an off night shooting, Kuzma showed he can be the versatile contributor every team needs &ndash; 11 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists with a steal and a block.
Let&rsquo;s see if he makes the Lakers regret trading him.

When talking about some of the most competitive and fearless players in the history of the NBA, Kobe Bryant&rsquo;s name is at the top of the list. Notorious for his &ldquo;Mamba Mentality,&rdquo; which means working hard and going above and beyond to accomplish your goals, Kobe built his illustrious Hall-of-Fame career and left a deep influence on countless other basketball players and fans.
Kobe made his career with his immaculate talent and skill as one of the best scorers the league has ever seen. But what really put him over the top and among the best players in history was that competitive spirit and will to get dirty, just like his idol Michael Jordan. Of course, that mentality placed him in some serious battles with various &ldquo;Kobe stoppers," especially in the playoffs. From Ruben Patterson, Doug Christie and Bruce Bowen, to Raja Bell, Ron Artest and Tony Allen, Kobe had to face and battle some of the toughest defenders the league has ever seen.
But in March 2010, there was a regular-season game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic. These were two teams that had just played each other in the Finals the previous postseason, so tensions got high as Kobe got into it with Matt Barnes, another player known for his gritty style of play. That would give us an iconic moment: On an inbound play on the baseline, Barnes faked throwing ball in Kobe&rsquo;s face. The Black Mamba didn't budge, and instead, stared back at him cold-bloodedly.

Stories about that moment have been told numerous times by Barnes and Kobe himself, and the two eventually teamed up in L.A. and became good friends. But recently, Barnes <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU1VbZxBcJE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">joined Gilbert Arenas on his podcast, "No Chill,"</a> and shared what provoked him to do the ball fake:
&ldquo;In the Orlando situation, I mean, anyone that plays Kobe knows he&rsquo;s dirty. Grabs you, elbows you, says sh**, does whatever. But they&rsquo;ll never call a foul on him," Barnes <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU1VbZxBcJE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. "[He was] known for elbowing you in the sternum, known for just doing all kinds of crazy sh**, but that was part of that mental warfare that he liked to put on you. This motherf***er elbowed me in my sternum, hit me in the nuts, elbowed me in the chin. Like, I&rsquo;mma fight this dude because these punk-a** refs aren&rsquo;t calling nothing. So when the ball-fake sh** happened, it wasn&rsquo;t like I&rsquo;m gonna fake the ball in his face. Literally, my arms just did it by themselves. I wanted to slam that shi** in his face. So I faked it, and then it kind of became what it did.&rdquo;

Kobe may have been a superstar, but he played like he was any other player on the team. He gave it his all on both sides of the floor and didn't shy away from locking up the other team&rsquo;s best players, all while frustrating them mentally and psychologically with his sneaky moves. The will to do the dirty stuff and use his superstar status to get away with extra physicality and sneaky plays made Kobe an absolute menace on the court. Knowing every trick in the book, mixed with his unbelievable skillset, allowed Bryant to be so successful and great.
And that is why his name will be forever remembered.

Everyone who works here at BasketballNews.com has a crystal ball. And an opinion. On Saturday, after asking several of our writers to make an NBA Finals MVP pick and explain their choice, this columnist drove across the New York/New Jersey border and placed $10 wagers for each staff member.
Sadly, Patrick Beverley of the Clippers was not on the board at any of the big U.S. sportsbooks, nor was Kawhi Leonard. Fortunately, neither player was picked by our writers.
I took Jrue Holiday of the Milwaukee Bucks, because I have a thing for glue guys who play great defense under Adam Silver&rsquo;s new and, ahem, improved rules. If the Bucks get past the Hawks, somebody is going to have to defend Chris Paul or Devin Booker or whoever has the hot hand at guard for the Clippers.
And since defense wins championships, and since Holiday was 38-1, and since short odds do not exactly do it for me, I took the guy who most certainly won&rsquo;t have the jitters from the free throw line if the NBA Finals comes down to a Game 7.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is my colleague Nekias Duncan, who also loves great defenders and went with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"I think I'm going to roll with Giannis here,&rdquo; Duncan said. &ldquo;There isn't a great option to throw at him from either West team, though Deandre Ayton (if the Suns make it) might have the best shot. His offensive prowess, combined with his defensive versatility, should make it easy for him to make a tangible impact on both ends. Great &lsquo;overcame-adversity&rsquo; narrative too.&rdquo;
Not a bad pick, as Giannis is the national favorite at odds of +115. Problem is, if Nekias wins his $10 wager, his winnings are $1.50. Years ago, 150 cents was worth a whole heck of a lot at the candy story. Today, it&rsquo;ll get you a Mars bar.

The boss, Alex Kennedy, was initially tempted to go with Giannis, too. But Alex does not run with the pack, which is why he had more Twitter followers before he turned 21 than many celebrities have after a half-dozen major motion pictures. He has more contacts in his phone than an optician has in his shop.
&ldquo;Give me Devin Booker,&rdquo; Kennedy said. &ldquo;I think the Phoenix Suns have enough to win it all, and Booker has been incredible this postseason. I can see him shining on the Finals stage, scoring a ton of points and creating for others -- all while talking trash and winning over more fans with his brash personality. Prior to this season, Booker was often characterized as someone whose empty stats didn't translate into wins, and now it feels like he's taking out five years of pent-up frustration on his playoff opponents.&rdquo;
Booker is the second choice on the board at FanDuel, so Kennedy&rsquo;s $10 could turn into $32, enough to purchase a half-dozen frappuccinos at Alex&rsquo;s local Starbucks outside of Orlando.
Matt Babcock, our draft guru who is working the NBA draft combine in Chicago, went with Giannis, too -- apparently because Matt believes that airballs from the free throw line are merely a hazard of the business. (Just messin&rsquo; with you, Matt.)
&ldquo;At this point, I believe the Milwaukee Bucks are the front-runner to win the championship, making it a natural decision to pick their top player,&rdquo; Babcock explained. &ldquo;Also, with how much the Bucks depend on Giannis to carry such a heavy load for them, that&rsquo;s another reason as to why he is the natural choice.&rdquo;
In Chicago, Matt&rsquo;s $1.50 won&rsquo;t go as far as Nekias&rsquo; $1.50, but at least that buck-and-a-half will get Matt four slices of pepperoni at the original Uno&rsquo;s (but not an entire deep-dish pizza).
Columnist extraordinaire Moke Hamilton is a practicing attorney when he is not talking and writing hoops, so his decisions go through an IQ filter that the rest of us can only wish we had. He is also a non-insufferable New Yorker, which makes him an outlier &ndash; even if his pick is not.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll take a flier on Chris Paul,&rdquo; Hamilton said. &ldquo;If he is able to help the Suns get past his old team, I think he&rsquo;ll take advantage of the opportunity to win his first Finals. I also liked him for regular-season MVP, but obviously fell short there. Maybe second time is the charm.&rdquo;
Paul&rsquo;s odds are +440, and if Hamilton wins, he can take that $44 to a Brooklyn Nets game next season and get a cheeseburger and a water and still have $15.32 cents left over. (Yes, a cheeseburger and water at Barclays Center costs $28.68. And no fries are included). But Hamilton will have to put that money into plastic form, because concession stands at the Nets home area do not take cash.
Last but not least is our own Hartenstein, Spencer Davies, who is counting down the decades until the Cavs are an NBA Finals team again.
Davies went with Paul George.
&ldquo;Let&rsquo;s be bold, shall we? If the Clippers continue to display the resilience they have through being battle-tested, what about Paul George? This is a man in the midst of an underappreciated playoff run,&rdquo; Davies said. &ldquo;Everybody&rsquo;s looking at the shooting numbers from deep, but George&rsquo;s mentality to put his head down and get to the rim has really opened up things for Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard and company to fire away. That is how you impact the game, by drawing multiple defenders and making plays for your teammates, especially when your team is missing a former Finals MVP in Kawhi Leonard.
&ldquo;Defensively, he&rsquo;s been effective with deflections and multiple efforts as well. George has continued to answer the bell (aside from the two missed free throws in Game 2) when called upon, and it would be incredible to see him win the 2021 Finals MVP in a bounce-back postseason from the Bubble less than a year ago.&rdquo;
Davies&rsquo; wager is priced at +700, and if Davies wins, he can take that $70 and drive down to Dan Gilbert&rsquo;s casino across from the Cavs&rsquo; arena and play blackjack with house money. With a good run, Davies can have enough dinero to take Hartenstein out for dinner.
But it would have to be a heck of a blackjack run. Hartenstein, rumor has it, can put down a lot of food.

With the team facing elimination, the Los Angeles Lakers' team doctors cleared Anthony Davis last night to return for their critical Game 6 matchup with the Phoenix Suns.
After five-and-a-half minutes of grimacing, limping and straining up and down the court, he fell to the ground writhing in pain. As soon as he stepped on the court, anybody with eyes could see that he wasn&rsquo;t healthy.
During that stretch, Turner Sports journalist and broadcaster Taylor Rooks tweeted, "Y&rsquo;all gotta take AD out." To which <a href="https://twitter.com/etanthomas36/status/1400659703957438465?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I responded</a>, "They should&rsquo;ve never put AD in."
NBA fans across the world witnessed what would have been a story of triumph. One for the archives of NBA history. It's easy to imagine the storyline that could've been.
Facing elimination in the NBA playoffs and down 3-2 in the series to Chris Paul, Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns, Anthony Davis had the dedication and passion, summoning his inner Mamba Mentality to exhibit superhuman perseverance -- and in heroic fashion, Davis saved the Los Angeles Lakers' season, propelling them to victory and solidifying this as one of the greatest displays of resilience in the history of the NBA on the way to another championship. 
Graphic designers for the media companies probably would&rsquo;ve drawn a picture of AD with a Superman emblem on his chest and a cape under his Lakers uniform.
People love stories of heroics. Isiah Thomas hobbling around on one foot in Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals against the Lakers and scoring 25 points in the third quarter, or Willis Reed walking out of the tunnel for the New York Knicks on his bum ankle in Game 7 of the 1970 Finals.
Everything was set up for Kevin Durant to be added to that list in 2019... until it didn't happen.

High school, college and professional coaches across the country were just salivating to be able to use this as an example to their players, to enforce the philosophy that &ldquo;pain is weakness leaving your body." They would&rsquo;ve used AD as an example to young athletes that the game, not your health, is what matters most. And a real &ldquo;team player&rdquo; would sacrifice a &ldquo;little discomfort&rdquo; for the good of the team.

I have seen this all before.
During my tenure with the Washington Wizards, I witnessed team trainer Eric Waters misdiagnose player after player, because what was best for the Wizards organization was for those players to play.
I saw the team tell Jarvis Hayes that he simply had a case of tendinitis in his knee, and had him playing through the pain; it turned out he had a broken knee cap, which ruined his entire career.
I saw him tell Kwame Brown that Kwame was just experiencing a &ldquo;little discomfort&rdquo; in his leg, and that he needed to play through the pain to show everyone that he was worthy of being the No. 1 pick; later, it turned out that Kwame actually had a torn hamstring.
I saw Eric Waters tell Gilbert Arenas that nothing was &ldquo;structurally wrong&rdquo; with his knee and he needed to show toughness and be a leader; it turned out Gilbert needed surgery and injured his knee worse by playing on it.
I saw him tell DeShawn Stevenson there was nothing seriously wrong with his back, and had him getting ice and stim and playing through the pain. After the season, upon further review by an outside doctor, it was discovered that DeShawn actually had an Inflamed L5 Nerve that was stuck underneath a disc that required not one, but two back surgeries to repair.
My point in saying all of this is not to simply blast Eric Waters, but to show that this happens all the time in professional sports. With team doctors and trainers, there is a conflict of interest, and the sworn medical oath becomes blurred and affects their diagnoses. They are hired by the teams, and are in essence employees of the organization -- not employees of the players. So they don&rsquo;t have the players' best interests in mind, typically; they only have the organizations'.
The Los Angeles Lakers medical staff basically RG3&rsquo;d Anthony Davis. They &ldquo;Any Given Sunday'd" him. They Eric Waters&rsquo;d him.
He shouldn&rsquo;t have been playing, period.
The risks outweighed the rewards. Even from a team standpoint, this is one of your franchise players. This is a player who has the capability of single-handedly turning an entire NBA Finals series around en route to a championship. This is a player that you should do everything in your power to convince him how important he is long term.
However, what the Lakers showed was the exact opposite. I don&rsquo;t care if Davis insisted on playing; they should&rsquo;ve have the medical integrity to tell him no. On Inside The NBA on TNT, Charles Barkley said, &ldquo;The doctors cleared him to play? They&rsquo;re gonna need some better doctors."

But the Lakers aren&rsquo;t the only ones. This happens all the time. I hope all young players see this and learn that no matter what the circumstance is or how big the game is, your health always comes first, and you ALWAYS get a second opinion from your own doctors that have nothing to do with the organization, as Kawhi Leonard wisely did in San Antonio in the 2017-18 season.
Interestingly enough, a few nights ago on the same platform, the same Charles Barkley <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVobMhM0nSk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made fun of Anthony Davis for frequently being injured</a> and coined the phrase, "Anthony 'Street Clothes' Davis.&rdquo; Kendrick Perkins, a former player-turned-media member at ESPN, tweeted that Charles needs to "pick a damn side" regarding the situation.

Interesting that the media will ridicule a player for being injured, and then act surprised when he succumbs to the pressure of playing in a key game and risking injuring himself worse.
I remember watching Grant Hill. He was about to literally take over the league.
People were calling him out for not playing hurt. Said he was soft, etc. etc., just like they were saying about AD in this playoff series. The Orlando medical staff derailed Grant&rsquo;s entire career.
Another example is the young Isaiah Thomas. He shouldn&rsquo;t have been playing in Boston in the 2017 playoffs, but he played, ended up hurting himself more, ended up needing surgery, cost himself $100 million, came back and played after losing his sister in a tragic accident. What did the Celtics do after all of that? They traded him that summer because they knew about his injury and knew that he needed surgery.
Kyrie Irving, while playing for Boston, went and got a second opinion and said he needed surgery on his left knee just one year after the Thomas situation; the Celtics' doctors didn&rsquo;t tell Kyrie that he needed surgery, so he had surgery on his own and came back the next year strong.
There is a reccurring theme here.

I saw many responses on social media of people (usually non-athletes) saying that Anthony Davis made the decision himself to go into the game, so anything that happens is his fault and not the organization&rsquo;s -- but it&rsquo;s not that simple.&nbsp;The onus shouldn&rsquo;t be placed on the athlete&rsquo;s shoulders. Of course athletes are going to want to play, but it shouldn&rsquo;t be up to them.
A solution to this league-wide issue was suggested to me by a lawyer by the name of Marlon Amprey. He explained that the Players Association should assemble a group of outside doctors/specialists (or specific doctors/specialists the player suggests) that have no connection to the team whatsoever, and will provide second &amp; third opinions and give players detailed reports on their health and risk of injury. All doctors&rsquo; reports given by teams that drastically differ should go under review, and there should be repercussions for team doctors and trainers who medically clear players who shouldn&rsquo;t be medically cleared to play.
The bottom line is, if you're injured, any organization will throw you out there in a heartbeat if they feel it is best for the organization. They will publicly criticize you if you don&rsquo;t play, and if you play and re-injure yourself worse -- or just don&rsquo;t play up to their expectations (as if they don&rsquo;t know your playing injured) -- they will get rid of you in a New York minute.
Just like The Washington Football team did with Robert Griffin III and just like the Washington Wizards did with Jarvis Hayes.

Irresponsible Lakers medical team could have RG3'd Anthony Davis

In Forbes' annual list of the world's richest sports-team owners, six NBA owners cracked the list. Of the top-10 richest owners, four were from the NBA:
Steve Ballmer - Ballmer, who is the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, comes at No. 2 on the list with a net worth of $68.7 billion. Most of Ballmer's wealth comes from his time as CEO of Microsoft.
Dan Gilbert - The 59-year-old owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers sits right behind Ballmer, at No. 3 on the list with a net worth of $51.9 billion. Gilbert is also the co-founder of StockX, where customers buy and sell shoes, clothing, and accessories.
Robert Pera - Pera is the youngest owner in the NBA right now and comes in at No. 6 on the list. At 43 years old, Pera has a net worth of $18.3 billion. Pera actually bought the Memphis Grizzlies when he was in his 30s.
Joseph Tsai - Tsai, who is No. 10 on the list, became owner of the Brooklyn Nets in 2019, but initially invested back in 2017 when he purchased 49% stake of the team. Tsai has a net worth of $11.6 billion.
This is an encouraging sign for the NBA, as the business is clearly doing well aside from the hardships that were brought along with the COVID-19 pandemic. The league hopes to bounce back from low ticket sales this season, as it has been rumored that the NBA <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/nba-expects-to-have-full-arenas-in-202122-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expects arenas to be at full capacity next year</a>.
