The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to trade guard D'Angelo Russell, rookie forward Maxwell Lewis, and three future second-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
This move aims to bolster the Lakers' wing depth and defensive capabilities. Finney-Smith, known for his perimeter defense and three-point shooting, is averaging 10.4 points per game while shooting 44% from beyond the arc this season. Milton adds versatility to the backcourt, contributing 7.4 points per game with a 39% three-point shooting percentage.
Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka finally pulled the plug on making a move, and at Russell’s expense. The 6-foot-5 guard has been benched by Lakers head coach JJ Redick for better fit in the starting lineup, implying that the trade was inevitable at some point for the LA franchise.
For the Nets, this trade marks the return of D'Angelo Russell, who previously earned an All-Star selection during his tenure in Brooklyn. Russell, averaging 15.8 points and 5.2 assists this season, is expected to provide veteran leadership and scoring for the Nets. Maxwell Lewis, a promising young wing, offers potential for development within Brooklyn's system.
Financially, the Lakers benefit by moving approximately $3.5 million below the second tax apron, enhancing their flexibility for future roster moves.
The Lakers, currently fifth in the Western Conference, aim to strengthen their position as playoff contenders with these strategic additions. As they continue to adjust their roster in pursuit of championship aspirations, this trade reflects a commitment to enhancing both defensive prowess and offensive versatility.
