"Let's Hope It Doesn't Become an Addiction": Victor Wembanyama Makes Bold Statement After Reaching NBA Finals

Victor Wembanyama has done the unthinkable, dethroning the defending NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Based on odds, OKC was projected to defend its title this season. However, Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs proved to be the biggest obstacle OKC had ever faced.
In his first playoff run, Wembanyama is heading to his first NBA Finals. This is also the Spurs' first finals appearance since 2014, when they beat the Miami Heat in five games. Given how this is Wemby's first taste of success, it's only natural that he might get addicted to the feeling. While he's looking forward to recreating the magical feeling of winning again soon, it's not something he wants to get hooked on.
"I can go through hurdles that I didn't know those hurdles could get so high," Wembanyama said. "It's just pushing through, I found resources inside of me, relentlessness. I already knew that, but doing it at this level, I mean, this is the best basketball on the planet that's being played right now… and the crazy thing is, maybe I'm crazy, but I want to do that 15-20 more times. Let's hope it doesn't become an addiction… maybe it already is."
The Spurs are now set to face off against the New York Knicks. Interestingly, this is a finals rematch between the two teams. The last time San Antonio and New York faced off was in 1999, when the Knicks last appeared in the finals.
San Antonio emerged victorious in five games before the new millennium and claimed its first championship in franchise history. Can Wembanyama and company recreate the success Tim Duncan and David Robinson had against New York, or will Jalen Brunson rally the Knicks to their first title in 53 years?
Victor Wembanyama on the Verge of Fulfilling His Childhood Dream
Victor Wembanyama has had an incredible run this season. He was given his second All-Star nod, won the Defensive Player of the Year award, and successfully entered his first playoff run in his NBA career.
While the San Antonio Spurs were already seen as legitimate contenders in the Western Conference, many believed that the Oklahoma City Thunder would defend their title. However, Wembanyama stepped up to the occasion and made the most out of his first postseason.
Now heading to the NBA Finals, Wemby is on the right track to fulfilling his childhood dream. During a postgame press conference with the Spurs star, he shared his thoughts on potentially winning the title.
"Winning the Larry O'Brien is a childhood dream," Wemby said. "Having a real shot at it, having a tangible chance at winning it, realizing a dream, you know, it's a lifetime chance. You never know when it's going to happen again. ... It's almost like the meaning of my life."
Looking at how Wembanyama has performed in his first playoff appearance, he's already put up legendary numbers. Wemby is currently averaging 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks, while shooting an efficient 51.0% from the field.
After destroying his Thunder matchup against Chet Holmgren, one could easily wonder if the New York Knicks' Karl-Anthony Towns would have a difficult time keeping up with the towering Frenchman.
Game 1 of the NBA Finals will commence on Wednesday, June 3. The Spurs will have home-court advantage, which gives them the opportunity to take an early lead in the series.
