When LeBron James joined the Lakers, his jersey sales set the bar for what a superstar signing could do for a franchise's finances. His move to Philadelphia didn't just clear that bar - Fanatics confirmed that more LeBron 76ers merchandise sold in the first 24 hours after the announcement than had sold in the entire first week following his 2018 Lakers deal.
That's the scale of business impact James is now having on a Sixers franchise still weeks away from tipping off its season.
The numbers CNBC highlighted paint a staggering picture. Philadelphia's ticket sales are up 585% this year, according to StubHub data, catapulting the team from the 22nd most popular in the league last season to No. 1 this year.
Between July 1, when James signed, and September 22, the Sixers accounted for 38% of all NBA ticket search traffic. Up from just 4% during the same stretch last year.
The merchandise side backs that up. In the 48 hours after James' signing, Fanatics confirmed that he sold more jerseys than any athlete who has ever switched teams in the company's database, surpassing the record previously held by Shohei Ohtani's move to the Dodgers in 2023.
LeBron James also had his single best month for merchandise sales in his 24-year career. He even topped every month of his previous stints in Cleveland, Miami, and Los Angeles.
Sponsorship dollars followed just as quickly. Philadelphia signed a new jersey patch deal with Bloom Energy, reportedly worth more than $30 million annually and ranked among the top two such deals in the league by yearly value, replacing the team's previous arrangement with Crypto.com.
The impact isn't confined to the Sixers' business ledger. The Boyd Company estimates James' first full season in Philadelphia could generate up to $430 million in regional economic activity, and history suggests that projection isn't far-fetched.
A Harvard Kennedy School study examining James' stints in Cleveland and Miami found that areas within a mile of the arena saw 13% more bars and restaurants open, with employment in that radius rising by nearly 25% during his tenure.
Average ticket prices for Sixers home games have already jumped to $282 this year. Up from $107 over the same stretch last season, and more than four in ten tickets are now being purchased by fans from outside the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware region, more than double last year's out-of-market share.
Put simply, James hasn't played a single regular-season minute for Philadelphia yet, and the 76ers are already the league's No. 1 team in ticket demand.
If the on-court results end up matching the early economic numbers, Philadelphia may be looking at the most impactful single free-agent signing in recent league history. Not just for wins, but for what it's already done to the franchise and the city around it.
