It's been half a month since LeBron James announced his free agency. James declared that he will no longer play for the Los Angeles Lakers, leading many teams to pitch themselves as his potential home. Now, the San Antonio Spurs are also involved — thanks to a cheeky message from Victor Wembanyama's teammate.
Reports suggested that James allowed his agent, Rich Paul, to handle the business before he made his decision. Since then, teams have been sending voice memos and e-mails in hopes of convincing James. In the case of San Antonio, forward Luke Kornet has jumped in to send a voice memo, directly urging LeBron to sign with the Spurs.
"Hey, LeBron, Mr. James, LeBron, LeBron, it's Luke Kornet, number 7 of the San Antonio Spurs," Kornet hilariously started. "You kinda yelled at me a little last week, well, last year. Anyway, I just wanted to invite you to come here, to San Antonio. We've got something really cool taking shape, with a ton of young talent. It's a city that's easy to live in, tax-free, that still counts for something."
While there were rumors that James could join the Spurs, those murmurs have died down. Many reports suggest that James has narrowed his options to five teams: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors.
"You could also play alongside another generational player, and Victor (Wembanyama) too," Kornet humorously added. "You should just swing by, give it a try, and see how it feels. We'd love to have you with us. I think it could be a swell old time. You, chasing your fifth ring, and us, we've already got five. We're after our sixth. So, deep down, we're all in the same boat."
Based on everything that has transpired so far, the Cavs, Sixers, and Warriors seem to be the top landing spots. Donovan Mitchell has reportedly been helping the Cavs' front office to recruit LeBron James. Philly's Jaylen Brown has also expressed interest in bringing James in, while Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry met up with him earlier this summer.
NBA Legend Doesn't See LeBron James Going Back to Miami
Among the five supposed frontrunners for the LeBron James sweepstakes, three are from the Eastern Conference. Two of those suitors are James' former teams, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. While many want to see LeBron go back home to Cleveland to finish his career where it all started, others still want to see him chase more championships in South Beach.
However, former Heat star and NBA legend Gary Payton recently shared how going back to Miami doesn't make sense for James. In an interview with sports journalist DJ Siddiqi, Payton explained why playing for the Heat next season isn't the right move.
"If you go to Miami now, what are you going to do, you got Giannis there," Payton said. "Where's the ball going to be? You know what I'm saying? You're going to have LeBron; that was his problem here with the Lakers. He was looking at Luka, and then you see both of those guys were playing very well without each other when they went to the bench. I don't know about the relationship with Miami. I don't know if that's fixed with Pat Riley and him. We don't know about that."
As of writing, there have been several rumors suggesting that James has already secretly struck a deal with the Cavs. However, that has yet to be confirmed. Based on how the other players on the front-running teams have reacted, it seems LeBron hasn't committed to any team yet.
Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo have remained cryptic on the possibility of James joining their respective teams. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown has openly welcomed the idea of LeBron coming to Philly.
