Could LeBron James and Anthony Davis Team Up With the Warriors?
LeBron James has announced that he won't re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of what is expected to be his 24th and final year in the NBA. As a result, front offices around the league are on alert, especially with reports suggesting that the King is open to playing just about anywhere. But, of course, a few teams appear to be the favorites: the Miami Heat, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and, interestingly, the Golden State Warriors. Getting the four-time MVP to the Bay Area, however, won't be easy.
The reason behind the Warriors' speculations was because of Draymond Green declining his $27.7 million player option and the team's active pursuit of Anthony Davis. The narrative was that Green helped the Warriors clear cap space to acquire James, while making recruitment more enticing by bringing Davis in. However, it seems that might no longer be the case after NBA insider Anthony Slater provided information regarding Davis' future with the Washington Wizards.
"The Wizards are not signaling that 1+1 equals 2," Slater said on ESPN. "This doesn’t mean that Davis is now available (after the Deandre Ayton trade). ... As far as it goes for the Warriors, this being leverage season, I don’t think this helps the Warriors leverage necessarily. The Wizards could easily still keep Davis, which could potentially box the Warriors out of the LeBron James sweepstakes."
James wants to go for that fifth ring before he retires from the NBA, and to do that, he needs to join a team that's ready to compete from the get-go. The Warriors, despite still having Stephen Curry play at an elite level, aren't really that team. And that's why they went after Davis, with whom Bron won the 2020 Championship as a Laker.
But Davis looks set to remain with the Wizards, according to Slater. He has yet to play a game for Washington, but the franchise views him as one of its cornerstone players as it looks to become relevant in the East again, with four-time All-Star Trae Young leading its core. Ayton's arrival provides additional depth at the center position, and the Wizards are unlikely to change that.
The Warriors aren't completely out of the picture just yet, but their chances appear to be dwindling unless the front office pulls a rabbit out of its hat. Meanwhile, James' future remains wide open.
LeBron James' Agent Hints at His Possible Destinations This Summer
Right now, the direction in which LeBron James is heading this summer is quite a blur. While everyone seemed sure that James would be heading to the Golden State Warriors after rejecting the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems that his summer as a free agent might take longer than anticipated.
There were several previous reports that James gave his agent, Rich Paul, the go signal to entertain all teams that are interested in acquiring him. Since then, it seems like Paul has narrowed down the teams that James is considering to suit up for next season.
In a recent episode of the Game Over Podcast, Paul jotted down on a whiteboard a list of names and teams that LeBron could possibly end up in. These teams include the Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, and, most recently, the New York Knicks.
Honestly, all destinations make sense for the King. Going to the Bay Area, James will finally fulfill his desire to play next to Stephen Curry before he ends his career. Heading back to Cleveland also makes perfect sense, potentially ending his career where it all started.
Then there's the Heat, where James could form a new Big Three with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Similarly, he could also join the 76ers to team up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown, the Timberwolves alongside LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards, the Celtics with Jayson Tatum and Paul George, or the Nuggets with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.
As for the Knicks, they are coming off their 2026 NBA championship victory over the San Antonio Spurs. If James were to join the team, it's fair to argue that New York could be in a strong position to reach the NBA Finals again next season.
For now, everything remains up in the air. Knowing LeBron, he's likely to take his time before deciding which situation gives him the best chance to end his career on a high.
