After months of rumors and speculations, Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to leave the Milwaukee Bucks. After an 11th-place finish in the regular season, the Bucks have chosen to send the two-time MVP to the Miami Heat, among three destinations.
Insider Chris Haynes wrote on X that the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves also showed interest. Charania revealed that the Bucks had narrowed it down and seriously negotiated with the Heat and the Celtics before choosing Miami because their offer gave them the best opportunity to rebuild the team.
"The Bucks chose the Heat's offer to bring more flexibility and a big-picture approach with controlled contracts and long-term competitiveness for new coach Taylor Jenkins to imagine the next generation of Milwaukee," Charania wrote in his report.
The insider revealed that, as per sources, the Bucks get Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and 3 first-round picks. This includes the No. 13 pick in Tuesday's 2026 NBA Draft. They're also getting a pick swap in 2030 and a second-rounder in 2033.
"After informing teams that they were open for business at the NBA draft combine in May, Bucks general manager Jon Horst landed a haul with the Heat’s offer that brings high-level starting/rotation players and young talent, as well as significant draft capital," Charania wrote.
As for the Bucks, they can finally move on and go into full rebuild mode this summer. Washington Huskies forward Hannes Steinbach is projected to be the 13th pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
After one season in the NCAA, Steinbach averaged 18.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 57.7% from the field. His ability to get to the rim on offense and create stops on defense is similar to what Antetokounmpo provided for the Bucks.
Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo is looking at an opportunity to shake things up at South Beach next season. The trio of Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins might change the entire landscape of the Eastern Conference.
Antetokounmpo is among the best finishers in the league. He finished the regular season at No. 6 in Field Goals, netting 62.4% of his throws. Combining with Bam Adebayo's 10.0/game rebound rate, their style of basketball could mirror LeBron James and Dwyane Wade's 'Heatles' era in the early 2010s.
The pairing of Adebayo-Antetokounmpo may also give other stars a reason to consider taking their talents to South Beach.
Antetokounmpo also seems to have been in the loop, because he made a cryptic post ahead of Charania's report.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Seemingly Gave a Hint Before the News Became Public
Hours before the NBA insider reported on Antetokounmpo getting traded to the Miami Heat, the power forward went on social media to upload a cryptic post.
"GOD, I trusted you at the beginning, and I will continue to trust you throughout," Antetokounmpo wrote on X.
It was only after the ESPN report that the full picture of Antetokounmpo's post became clear. However, the player hasn't said anything else since the post. Then again, this trade was a long time coming.
In fact, the Bucks' decision puts a 13-month trading saga to rest. That's because Antetokounmpo's representatives told the Bucks before, during, and after the 2025-26 season that he wouldn't sign a long-term extension with the team.
Shams Charania also noted that the Bucks and the Heat will officially execute the trade on July 6, which "leaves the framework open."
