Chris Webber Cites Stephen Curry While Blasting Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs for 29-Point Collapse vs. Knicks

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs suffered a humiliating loss after the New York Knicks completed a 29-point comeback victory in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals. While the Spurs were on the verge of victory, Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby came to New York's rescue and led the Knicks to a 107-106 win. So, it wasn't exactly a surprise when Chris Webber called out the Spurs for their questionable strategy in Game 4.

Webber noted that San Antonio oddly attempted too many 3-point shots instead of utilizing its greatest weapon, Wembanyama. The Hall of Famer added that the Spurs are nowhere near Stephen Curry's level from beyond the arc.

"You're supposed to not start milking the clock, but play deliberate, thoughtful basketball," Webber said about the Spurs giving up a 29-point lead. "Steph Curry is the best 3-point shooter we've ever seen, and he's one of the best finishers. He never gets credit for that. Because as soon as you think that you deny him, he goes back door and makes a layup. That's the brilliance of him shooting threes. He's not just a specialist."

"When you have guys taking (James) Harden-like stepbacks and bad shots, it really made me angry," Webber said about the Spurs' decision to take a plethora of threes. "I just don't understand when captains or coaches don't realize that... We have the tallest player on the floor. We give (Victor Wembanyama) so much credit for being the great player that he is... if you don't use that player's main skill, I think you're going to be (losing)."

Despite leading by as much as 29 points in the third quarter of Game 4, the Spurs questionably relied on taking outside shots. Based on the stats sheet, San Antonio attempted 43 3-point shots. They were only able to sink 17 of them, giving the team 39.5% accuracy from beyond the arc.

To Webber's point, instead of utilizing Wembanyama inside the paint, he ended up becoming the player with the second-most attempted threes for the Spurs. He shot eight attempts and only bagged two of them, putting him at a 25% accuracy. And if anything, it has only raised alarms about the coming games.

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs are on the verge of elimination

Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals will be heading back to the Frost Bank Center in Texas. This means that the San Antonio Spurs will once again have home-court advantage. At least, that's what everyone assumes.

However, according to a recent ticketing report by TickPick, almost half of the arena will be filled with New York Knicks fans. Ticket purchases for Game 5 show that 37% were bought from New York area codes, while 8% were from New Jersey area codes. Meanwhile, only 12% of the purchases came from Texas.

This means that the Frost Bank Center could turn out to be a hostile environment for the Spurs, and it could make it more difficult for them to focus on winning at home.
