The Atlanta Hawks are sending Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The trade comes just two days after rumors started circulating about the Wizards pursuing Young when he and the Hawks were working on a trade out of the franchise.
The 27-year-old Young, a 4-time all-star with the Hawks, now moves on to the nation’s capital in Washington to continue his basketball journey in his preferred destination.
The Hawks will receive McCollum, who is on an expiring contract for financial flexibility to use for future trades, as well as being a great veteran that fits the team’s playstyle. They will also receive Kispert, a nice connecting piece with shooting to put alongside Jalen Johnson.
ANALYSIS: For the Hawks, this ushers in the new era for the franchise by moving away from their franchise piece for 8 years in Young. Atlanta has been playing relatively well without Young at the start of the season with the emergence of Jalen Johnson, who has been playing at near all-NBA level. They will now move on to a different direction with Johnson as their centerpiece, continuing to develop and accumulate young talent that fits his timeline.
For the Wizards, they get their franchise PG they have been searching for to anchor the young talent they have been developing over the last few years. Young joins a promising young core of Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, Tre Johnson, and Bub Carrington as they try to turn the franchise around after years of struggling and rebuilding.
This is a developing story.
