Talks on potential 18th roster spot for teams comes to stall

Conversations have reached a stalemate regarding the creation of an 18th roster spot for NBA teams, New York Times Sports has learned.

ANALYSIS: Stein went on to say that the league's preference is that the 18th roster spot is another two-way contract, which is restricted to players with zero-to-three years of service. The hope is that would be enough to provide roster relief.

The Players' Association, on the other hand, wants the 18th roster spot to be open to all veteran free agents, according to Stein. The league is concerned that an 18th roster spot open to all players would potentially create a competitive advantage for hard-capped teams to add another quality player.

The current additional 16th and 17th roster spots are only designated for two-way contracts.
