NBA Champion Sets Record Straight on James Harden's Locker-Room Reputation

When Jeremy Lin left the New York Knicks for Houston, teammates described a locker room that got quieter. Most reports talked about friction but that was not the case when Bruce Brown was asked to describe what Brooklyn’s locker room actually felt like once James Harden left town.

Speaking on the Dan Le Batard Show, Brown offered an account of his former Nets teammate that contradicts the “toxic locker room” reputation that has followed Harden through three stops in the league.

“James was a great teammate on and off the court and was definitely one of the best teammates I’ve ever had,” Brown said. “He’s just a different breed. When he left, the locker room was kind of quiet. Nobody really did much together.”

“When James was there, obviously it was more fun… He did hold a lot of events for us,” he added. “When he left, the locker room was kind of quiet. Nobody really did much together.”

Brown played alongside Harden at Brooklyn. Harden’s exit from Brooklyn came in February 2022, when he forced a trade to Philadelphia after he described the Nets as engulfed in “a lot of dysfunction.”

Kyrie Irving was traded to Dallas later that same season, and Kevin Durant was moved to Phoenix shortly after. The entire superteam collapsed within roughly a year of Harden’s own exit, putting doubts to the narrative that Harden alone was the disruptive element in that locker room.

Harden has now requested a trade in four of his last six seasons. From Houston to Brooklyn, Brooklyn to Philadelphia, Philadelphia to the Clippers, and reportedly leaving the Clippers “hanging” before a move to Cleveland in exchange for Darius Garland.

His departure from Philadelphia was particularly public and damaging. He delivered a scathing statement calling out Sixers president Daryl Morey, skipped training camp, and stayed away from the team for weeks.

A breakdown so complete that reports later surfaced saying Harden and Joel Embiid stopped speaking to each other entirely.

At his most recent stop with the Clippers, he requested and received a trade after just two seasons. A 213hoops’ season preview noted that Harden was “the most accountable player on the Clippers” and that the team’s positive culture was attributed to his leadership.

The story across every stop is consistent. Harden appeared to be a genuinely well-liked teammate in the room, and a source of real friction only at the point where his individual goals - winning at the highest level, playing his natural ball-dominant style and being properly compensated - collide with an organizational direction he disagrees with.

Harden himself framed his exits in exactly those terms. He stated after leaving Philadelphia that he had taken $36 million less in salary specifically to help build a winning roster, only to find the front office had other plans for him.
