LeBron James made his debut with the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday when they went up against the defending champions, the New York Knicks. It was a huge matchup for the Sixers, as they were tasked with immediately testing their roster against the 2026 NBA Champions.
However, prior to the game, former ESPN host Linda Cohn couldn't help but notice LeBron's antics during the pre-game ceremony. During the national anthem portion of the pre-game, Cohn spotted James practicing his golf swings instead of paying respects to the American flag. Cohn went on social media to call the King out for disrespecting what was supposed to be a patriotic moment.
"Did you see LeBron James the other night, opening night of the NBA season? Nationally televised game... LeBron James, first game with the Philadelphia 76ers... The national anthem was being played, and of course, the NBA enforces its rules, and everyone has to stand there listening to the national anthem... And what is LeBron James doing? He's acting like a 3-year-old... He's practicing his golf swing... (LeBron) was standing there playing childish games."
For as much as Cohn is making a good point, many of the fans on social media don't believe that James' actions reflect poorly on his demeanor. To many, it's not as if it was the Olympic Games where LeBron had to represent his country. It was simply another day in the office for the King, and he was trying to have some fun before his debut with the Sixers.
LeBron James Off to a Good Start
As of this writing, LeBron James has already completed two games as part of the Philadelphia 76ers. Honestly, his new team is off to a great start to the 2026-27 season. In their season opener, they dethroned the defending champions, the New York Knicks, 106-100. Then, on Thursday, the 76ers beat LeBron's hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, 114-106.
Despite James transitioning into a much smaller role, he has masterfully accepted it and is delivering on his team's needs. During his debut on Tuesday, LeBron nearly finished with a triple-double, racking up 14 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and one block. Then on Thursday, James had a double-double outing, adding 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block.
Looking at his averages, while his scoring numbers might be lower, he's providing a little bit of everything on the hardwood for the 76ers. James is currently averaging 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 block. Arguably All-Star numbers, still.
The 76ers are currently 2-0 to the season. While it may still be too early to celebrate, Philly's current win streak is undoubtedly a huge confidence booster for the team as the season progresses.
