As LeBron James' free agency continues to drag on, several stars are getting in on recruiting him. On the flip side, though, there are also a few superstars who have decided to stay far away from trying to make a pitch to the 41-year-old star, such as Jalen Brunson.
The 2026 Finals MVP appeared at the Fanatics Fest to talk about basketball. One of the things he addressed is whether he's already made attempts to convince the four-time NBA MVP to join the defending champions.
Brunson reassured fans that his focus lies elsewhere and that he was leaving the job of recruiting free agents to the front office.
"You guys are going to love me for this. I got asked this question and I answered it perfectly," he said on Saturday. "My job is to go out there, dribble the ball, put the ball in the hoop, try to play a little defense."
"There's people who are above me that make jobs that determine whose on the team and whose not," he continued. "So, I'll leave the pitching to them."
On paper, there are legitimate pros to James joining the Knicks. If his motivation is to win another title, the defending champions are the most logical destination.
The Knicks won't have to worry about gutting their roster or making significant changes to create cap space, since James does not appear motivated by landing a massive contract.
Position-wise, there's also already a scenario that looks perfect. James could slot in at the power forward position with Karl-Anthony Towns at the five and OG Anunoby at the three.
Meanwhile, Brunson and Mikal Bridges handle the backcourt duties, and Josh Hart comes in as a sixth man.
However, James' agent, Rich Paul, has a pretty compelling reason as to why his client joining the Knicks is a bad idea.
Why Rich Paul Thinks LeBron James to Knicks Is a Bad Idea
Since he decided he won't re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James' free agency has been the center of discussion nearly everywhere.
On “Game Over,” the podcast Rich Paul co-hosts with Max Kellerman, the agent explained why New York isn’t on his client’s list.
According to him, the Knicks do not belong on that list. Paul's reasoning had nothing to do with talent or roster construction and was more about optics.
He said that since the Knicks just won the title, James joining them would disrupt the winning culture they’ve cultivated. If New York hadn’t won the 2026 championship, Paul admitted there would be no doubt James would consider them.
Although Paul admitted that if Jalen Brunson does call to say that he has no issue with James joining the Knicks, then things might change. Later, he also admitted that New York's front office had already checked in with him about signing James.
