Earlier in April, Luka Doncic suffered a severe Grade 2 left hamstring strain during an April 2 game against the OKC Thunder. The injury forced him to sit out the Lakers' final five games of the regular season. While there was hope he'd make it back for the postseason, Doncic never got healthy enough to play, missing the Los Angeles Lakers' entire 2026 NBA Playoffs run as well- in total, sidelining him for the team's last 15 games of the season.
With that in mind, many were concerned about the Lakers' future, especially after LeBron James departed the team. Thankfully, it appears that Doncic has fully recovered and is expected to play at the start of the 2026-27 season. Lakers insider Dan Woike shared an email written by Luka to the fans.
"I took a real break from basketball the first few weeks after the season ended to rehab my body," Doncic shared. "My recovery went great, and I'm 100% healthy again."
Doncic then shared how he's kept himself motivated heading into the upcoming season.
"Taking some time away from basketball is something I do at the start of every offseason," Doncic added. "It's a different way to do things, but it works for me. When I let myself miss the game a little bit and try some new things, it only makes me more excited and motivated to get back to playing."
Despite his significant absence towards the latter part of the season, Luka still managed to secure the scoring title. Doncic averaged 33.5 points to win the award. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team, alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, Cade Cunningham, and Nikola Jokic.
While many believed he should've won the award, Doncic finished fourth in MVP voting.
With LeBron no longer in LA, it'll be interesting to see how differently Luka will carry the team. Of course, we expect Austin Reaves to play a huge role in the upcoming season, as he's already established himself as the Lakers' number two option since last season.
Luka Doncic Expected to Spend Time With Lakers Teammates This Summer
As we wait for the NBA training camp to begin, many players are still in vacation mode. Apparently, in a recent email to his fans on his member-exclusive platform, Luka Doncic revealed that he's now spending the remainder of his break in Slovenia.
While Doncic is enjoying his time with his daughters and the rest of his family, it appears that he's also looking forward to spending time with his Los Angeles Lakers teammates. Luka revealed that his teammates will visit him in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
"I can’t wait for my teammates to come to Ljubljana," Doncic said in his email to his fans. "I’m looking forward to the time together and excited to show them where I’m from. Grateful every day for all your support. Hope you’re having a great summer. See you soon."
It's clear that Doncic is trying to establish a solid bond with the Lakers, especially now that the majority of the roster has been replaced.
With so many new faces added to the roster, Luka and Austin Reaves will need to build chemistry fast- ideally starting this summer. If they can't find that rhythm early, the Lakers risk another season of trial and error.
