“They Needed Somebody More”: Former NBA Star Questions LeBron James’ Move to 76ers

As of July 26, LeBron James has officially signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. Philly fans should expect the birth of a new superteam in the 2026-27 season. Many believe that James teaming up with Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey almost guarantees a trip to the 2027 NBA Finals.

However, there is a former NBA star who doesn't see it in the same light. One of James' former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates, Brendan Haywood, recently expressed his thoughts on him going to the 76ers. Haywood questioned the Sixers' decision to recruit LeBron, as he doesn't see him as the guy that the team needs.

"I didn't think they needed another ball handler slash scorer; they needed somebody more upfront to do the things that Embiid doesn't do right now or can't do," Haywood said on his podcast. "They needed somebody else at the four that was like an active stretch big. I just don't really love the fit for LeBron on this team."

The thing about superteams is that, in some cases, they take time to settle in. When LeBron went to the Miami Heat in 2010, his superteam with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh didn't win the championship in their first season together.

The same thing happened in 2014 when he went back to the Cleveland Cavaliers; his trio with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love couldn't get the job done in year one.

That could be the case with the Sixers this coming season. However, it will all depend on several factors.

Will Embiid remain consistently healthy? Can Brown get along with his newfound teammates? Is Maxey willing to share the responsibility of being the ball handler with James? Are the 76ers willing to accept LeBron as their new captain?

For now, everything remains a blur. While the union of the four stars seems promising, it'll be interesting to see if they really are a perfect fit.

NBA Star Defends LeBron James on Social Media

LeBron James is once again under the spotlight after deciding to join the Philadelphia 76ers.

While Philly fans are looking forward to having the King claim his throne, many other basketball fans aren't too keen on the idea of him transferring to another team.

Fans on social media have been ranting about how James keeps chasing rings and forming superteams. Apparently, NBA star Kevin Durant has seen enough of the criticism and backed up James on Threads.

"Yall n***as be too emotional; how he moves is not gettin in your way at all..how u feel don’t change the truth about what he’s produced as a basketball player. U don’t know this man personally but have personal disdain like he really f**ked your life up. U in too deep my boy," Durant responded to one of the fans on Threads.

"Who cares, they all played 15+ years and gave everything to the culture of sports and shit, the world itself. All the other s**t is noise to me. I get why u look at it that way, you’re spectator but when u live it, u see s**t different," Durant responded to another fan.

While there might be some truth behind the narrative of James chasing rings, at this point in his career, why wouldn't he? LeBron is now in his twilight years and could retire anytime soon. Nothing beats hanging up the laces after a championship victory.
