LeBron James Accused of Making NBA Wait After Lakers Left Him With "Bruised Ego"

As the summer drags on, the conversation surrounding LeBron James' free agency has expanded to more than just which team he'll sign with. Now, people are starting to discuss his motivations for still not making a decision.

Several analysts and pundits have offered reasons why he remains a free agent, with the latest from former NFL player Chris Canty. According to the 2011 Super Bowl winner, James dragging his free agency decision has everything to do with stroking his own ego.

"It's ego, that's all it could be," Canty said on ESPN's 'Unsportsmanlike'. "This is all about feeding his ego after he was treated not just as a secondary option, but a tertiary option in LA last season."

Canty said that the Los Angeles Lakers used James as a third option behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Something that can't feel great for a player of his caliber. Because of this, the four-time MVP is simply getting back at the league.

"I'm sure he has a bruised ego," Canty continued. "And the only way he can have a little bit of that get back is to have the NBA world, and the sports world as a whole, waiting with bated breath on his decision to sign."

While Canty said this in a definitive tone, there is, of course, no way of knowing what's running through James' mind. There are several other reasons people could consider for why he still hasn't made his decision.

One such reason is that he's waiting for the teams to finalize their rosters for the 2026-27 season.

At 41 years old, James doesn't have the luxury of waiting two or three seasons before his team is truly ready to contend for a title. As such, he needs to carefully consider the roster construction of whichever team he wants to join.

In fact, there's a belief that he is delaying his decision to see if any of the teams courting him can trade for people he's already won a championship with.

Many think that LeBron James will sign with whichever team can give him the best chance to compete for his fifth NBA title. That's why the most prominent teams linked to him are the ones with the star power to pursue the Larry O'Brien.

However, it seems none of the current squads are appealing enough to James, and he wants them to get either Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis, per Kevin O'Connor.

According to the NBA Analyst, James has decided to delay his decision this year to give teams time to trade for either of these two stars.

Together, James and Irving won one of the hardest-fought Finals series ever. They came back from being down 3-1 in the 2016 Finals against the Golden State Warriors.

The very same team that beat them for the title the year prior, and set the best regular-season record of 73-9.

In 2020, James won his fourth-ever NBA Championship with Davis inside the NBA Bubble. A title whose legitimacy and level of difficulty are still being debated every time it's brought up.

James already has chemistry and a history of winning with both of these stars. However, actually trading for them to secure the 41-year-old free agent might be a near-impossible task this summer.
