Stephen Curry and Warriors Are Playing “Love Island” With Their Pursuit of LeBron James, Says Insider

Paring LeBron James with Stephen Curry is an idea that the Golden State Warriors continue to flirt with. The Warriors have been desperately searching for a star to pair with the aging Curry for a while, and James seems like the perfect partner.
However, their hypothetical acquisition of James has always seemed more like fiction than reality. They have never had a compelling package to offer in a trade for him, and they've never seemed to be in a real position to sign him to any deal.
Due to how their speculative pursuit of James has panned out, radio host Joe Spadoni has likened it to a highly dramatized reality TV show.
"The more and more we have this conversation, it's so much less about LeBron and so much more about do you just want something to be entertained with," Spadoni said.
"You're basically just going Love Island for two years," he continued. "That's not how sports teams are run."
He added that he understood that entertainment is one of the NBA's aspects. However, the way the Warriors have approached it has made building the team more difficult.
Since their 2022 title, things have steadily gone downhill for the Warriors. Curry is still playing at an All-NBA level, but he hasn't had the support to lead the squad to a deep playoff run.
Part of that is that they haven't had a star to pair with him, and it's not for a lack of trying. Over the past few seasons, they have been linked to nearly every major star rumored to be available.
Names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and LeBron James have all been mentioned in the same discussions regarding Warriors targets.
However, not a single one of those stars has even come close to donning the Warriors jersey. They reportedly were nearing a deal for Kevin Durant, but the star forward himself vetoed it.
With James entering free agency this summer, though, the Warriors have one final chance to pair him with Stephen Curry.
The Warriors Could Swing for Another LeBron James Deal This Offseason
If LeBron James chooses to remain in the NBA for the 2026-27 season, joining the Warriors remains a possibility.
If he decides that he wants to play somewhere that isn't the Los Angeles Lakers or the Cleveland Cavaliers, only a few teams stand out as realistic destinations.
At this stage in his career, James needs to go to a team that can make a deep playoff run. That means he needs to be with another star. The Warriors tick this box with Stephen Curry.
While the team does not have a deep roster right now, the combination of James and Curry could attract elite free agents.
Additionally, James has a good relationship with Curry and Draymond Green. Riding out into the sunset with his friends might be an attractive enough prospect that attracts James to Golden State.
In fact, this might be something Curry and the Warriors are banking on. According to league insider Brett Siegel, Curry intends to have a meeting with James to recruit him.
Now, there's the discussion of finances. The Warriors do not have $50 million to offer James.
However, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, they can offer James the $15 million midlevel exception. The front office will need to do some maneuvering, but it is entirely possible.
Of course, this is just one of the many possibilities for LeBron James. And among those possibilities, this doesn't rank very high in terms of becoming reality.
