Stephen A Smith Questions Cavs’ Effort, Calls for “Investigation” After Losing Game 3 vs Knicks

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one loss away from elimination after another brutal collapse against the New York Knicks.

On Friday night, the Knicks pushed their Eastern Conference Finals lead to 3-0 with a dominant 121-108 win in Cleveland, putting the Cavaliers on the edge of a sweep despite entering the series with home-court advantage.

Stephen A. Smith did not hold back while reacting to Cleveland’s performance on SportsCenter.

Asked to describe the Cavaliers’ effort in Game 3, Smith immediately unloaded on the team and questioned their urgency from the opening tip.

“Pathetic. Very, very pathetic,” Smith said Friday.

“They gave up 37 points in the first quarter. They didn't come out with any degree of urgency whatsoever. I wouldn't be surprised if we did an investigation and we discovered that half the team had already made vacation reservations.”

The remark quickly went viral online, with many fans interpreting it as Smith questioning Cleveland’s effort level rather than making a literal call for an investigation.

Cleveland’s collapse throughout the series helps explain why Smith reacted so strongly.

The Cavaliers blew a 22-point lead in Game 1 before losing 115-104 in overtime. Then came a 109-93 defeat in Game 2. Friday’s loss only deepened concerns, as the Knicks controlled the game early and never allowed Cleveland to build real momentum.

New York has now won 10 straight playoff games, while the Cavaliers suddenly look like a team struggling to recover mentally after missing multiple opportunities earlier in the series.

Game 4 remains in Cleveland on Monday night, but the pressure surrounding the Cavaliers has reached another level.

No NBA team has ever successfully come back from a 3-0 playoff deficit, meaning the Cavs are now fighting simply to extend their season.

Donovan Mitchell’s Response Reflected Cleveland’s Frustration

The pressure is now fully on Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers’ leadership group heading into Game 4.

With the Knicks holding a commanding 3-0 lead, Cleveland’s margin for error is officially gone.

After Game 3, Mitchell was asked what Cleveland needed to do differently to turn the series around.

While his answer was technically correct, the tone behind it lacked much confidence or conviction.

“Let’s start with making some shots,” Mitchell said. “Let’s start with getting some stops and making some free throws.”

Mitchell’s response focused on basic execution, but it also reflected how limited Cleveland’s answers currently appear against New York.

The Cavaliers have struggled to match the Knicks’ physicality, energy, and late-game execution throughout the series, leaving very little optimism surrounding a potential comeback.

Cleveland will at least have one final opportunity to respond in front of its home crowd.

But after three straight losses and a series filled with blown opportunities, the Cavaliers now face the difficult task of trying to stop one of the hottest teams left in the playoffs.
