"San Antonio Continues to Get Lucky": LeBron James Makes Honest Confession About Victor Wembanyama Amid OKC-Spurs Series

LeBron James believes the San Antonio Spurs may have landed another franchise-changing superstar, and he did not hide his feelings while discussing Victor Wembanyama during the latest episode of Mind the Game.

“San Antonio continues to get lucky as f*** with these generational talented, IQ, smart [players],” James said while comparing Wembanyama to Spurs legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Wembanyama’s size obviously stands out at 7-foot-4 with an eight-foot wingspan, but James and Steve Nash agreed that what truly separates him is everything beyond the physical tools. His coordination, feel for the game, defensive instincts, and work ethic are what make him different from every other seven-footer the NBA has seen before.

On the podcast, Nash pointed out that many fans still reduce Wembanyama’s dominance to his size alone. James quickly pushed back on that idea.

The pair explained that length is only one piece of the equation. Wembanyama’s ability to move like a guard, process the game defensively, and maintain elite coordination at his size is what makes him nearly impossible to compare to previous big men.

James agreed that the league has seen plenty of towering players before, but none with Wembanyama’s combination of IQ, coordination, mobility, and discipline. The Lakers star then joked about the Spurs repeatedly landing generational prospects through the draft.

“San Antonio continues to get lucky as f*** with these generational talented, IQ, smart [players],” James said.

He then connected Wembanyama to the Spurs lineage of David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

“Guys who just have this dead serious mentality,” James explained. “They have these horse blinders on, and they’re like, the mission is the mission, and that’s all that matters.”

The timing of the discussion also mattered. Wembanyama is currently in the middle of a Western Conference Finals battle against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with the series tied 1-1 after OKC responded to San Antonio’s double-overtime win in Game 1. His 41-point, 24-rebound masterpiece in the opener immediately forced the Thunder into major defensive adjustments for Game 2.

But beyond the offensive highlights and ball-handling flashes, both Nash and James agreed that Wembanyama’s true separator right now is his defense.

LeBron James Shares His Gameplan for Attacking Victor Wembanyama's Defense

James and Nash both described Wembanyama as an already elite defensive player because of how much ground he covers around the rim and how quickly he processes actions defensively. His presence alone changes the geometry of the floor, which is a major reason the Spurs suddenly look like legitimate championship threats.

Nash eventually shifted the conversation toward a different question: how do you even attack a defense anchored by Wembanyama?

James explained that it starts with personnel. Teams need five players who can both space the floor and create offense without sacrificing size or versatility.

James then broke down the tactical side of it. Whoever Wembanyama is guarding has to pull him away from the paint and keep him high on the floor instead of allowing him to roam near the rim.

He also explained that teams must constantly involve Wembanyama in actions and switches. Bigs who can shoot force him farther away from the basket, opening driving lanes and making it harder for him to recover as a weak-side rim protector.

Interestingly, James specifically pointed to teams like OKC, Cleveland, and New York as examples of rosters capable of creating those kinds of spacing challenges.

Even with all those adjustments, James admitted there is no true solution for Wembanyama yet. At best, teams can only reduce his impact slightly rather than completely eliminate it.

Considering Wembanyama is only in his third NBA season and already forcing playoff teams to redesign entire offensive game plans, it is easy to understand why James sees him as the latest generational star to land in San Antonio.
