"Winning is Most Important": LeBron James Sends Clear Message to Lakers and Other NBA Contenders Over His Future

LeBron James has made even the upcoming offseason something to anticipate. Typically, regular NBA fans don't look forward to the summer since there's no action. However, anticipation of what James' next chapter will be has fans waiting to see what he'll decide.
Some think the 41-year-old star could finally be calling it a career. Others think he’ll go on playing, on the other hand. Those on the latter’s side have another thing to consider, as James could choose to play almost anywhere.
On the latest episode of 'Mind the Game,' the podcast James co-hosts with Steve Nash, the pair talked about James' future. Nash ignited the conversation when he asked the 4-time champion about his future.
James admitted he hadn't been thinking about it much. He also acknowledged his status as a free agent but admitted his mind is elsewhere. Specifically, he shared that he was looking forward to a family vacation after Memorial Day.
Later on, he made it crystal clear that he won't just join any team situation. At this stage in his career, he will only join a squad that has a legitimate shot at the title.
"Winning is most important because you want to be excited about going to work everyday. You want to be excited about winning the day," James said. "Being around a group of guys that feel the same way, and trying not to take steps backwards. "
While it does not definitively answer the question on what's next for him, it s a direct message to anyone who wants to sign him. If he does come back for a record-setting 24th NBA season, he'll only do it in a situation where he can pursue a 5th championship ring.
Aside from putting together a championship-caliber roster, whichever team wants a shot at signing him also needs to consider its finances.
LeBron James Will Not Take A Significant Pay Cut
LeBron James put up unprecedented numbers in his 23rd NBA season. In an age when most people are already out of the league, he was still putting up 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.
His scoring average was the third-best on the Los Angeles Lakers. He was also their second-best playmaker and their third-best rebounder. This proves that he is still capable of being a core piece who will affect winning with his play on the court.
As such, it is understandable for him to demand a salary befitting his contributions. Some think he should take the veteran minimum. This way, whichever team he signs with will have the cap space to build a winning team around him.
However, NBA Insider Jake Fischer doesn't think this will be the case. During a 'Bleacher Report' livestream, the insider countered the belief that James will accept a minimum contract. Instead, teams will need to pay him a significant amount.
While this does not necessarily mean that he'll demand a max contract, it also means front offices can't just expect to stack superstar talent around him. James could still take a pay cut, but it won't be as large as some initially anticipated.
