Lakers Might “Renounce” LeBron James’ Rights After Latest Timeline Update on His Future, Per Insider

LeBron James may want time before deciding his NBA future, but according to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, the Los Angeles Lakers may not be able to wait much longer.

James enters the 2026 offseason as an unrestricted free agent after eight seasons in Los Angeles. While the four-time champion reportedly plans to take several weeks away from basketball before making a decision, Windhorst warned that the Lakers could eventually be forced to move forward with their offseason plans if they do not receive clarity by the start of free agency.

Windhorst explained that the situation revolves around the Lakers holding James’ full Bird Rights. That gives Los Angeles the rare ability to offer him a massive new contract regardless of the team’s salary cap situation.

According to Windhorst, the Lakers could pay James roughly $58 million next season if he chooses to return. However, those Bird Rights also come with a massive cap hold attached to them, which directly impacts the Lakers’ ability to build the rest of their roster during free agency.

That is where the timeline pressure enters the equation. James recently admitted he plans to step away from basketball conversations for a while, but Windhorst noted that the Lakers may eventually need an answer in order to properly navigate free agency.

“Let me explain something to you about the timeline for LeBron. He has earned the right to wait as long as he wants,” Windhorst said.

“He could wait until September and announce that he wants to play, and there will be teams beating down his door to sign him.”

Windhorst then explained why the Lakers’ situation is different.

“But if he wants to sign with the Lakers for any significant amount of money, he’s probably going to have to make up his mind by mid to late June,” Windhorst said. “If the Lakers don’t get a clear answer from LeBron by July 1st, they may have to renounce his rights.”

Windhorst also stressed that this is not a guarantee or a threat from the Lakers organization. Rather, it is the reality of how the NBA salary cap system works once free agency officially begins.

During a recent episode of Mind the Game with Steve Nash, James confirmed that he has no intention of rushing into a decision about his future.

“I’m still in the moment of just taking my time,” James said.

“I haven’t really even thought about it too much. Obviously, I understand that I’m a free agent and I can control my own destiny about being here with this franchise for the foreseeable future or if it’s going somewhere else.”

The comments reinforced the idea that James is prioritizing patience, even as the Lakers face growing pressure to finalize their offseason plans.

Despite approaching his 42nd birthday later this year, James still performed at an All-NBA level throughout the 2025-26 season. He battled through multiple nagging injuries late in the year and still helped lead the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the opening round of the playoffs before Los Angeles was eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals.

That postseason run only reinforced the belief around the league that James can still contribute at a championship level if he returns for a 24th NBA season.

Which Teams Could Realistically Pursue LeBron James?

While everyone is waiting for James to make his decision, there are several landing spots he could decide to head towards.

The most emotionally compelling option remains the Cleveland Cavaliers. A third stint in Cleveland would give James an opportunity to finish his career in his home state while joining a Cavaliers roster that is already competing deep into the playoffs.

The Golden State Warriors will also continue to appear in speculation simply because of the mutual respect between James and Stephen Curry. While there has been no concrete reporting connecting the two sides recently, the idea of the NBA’s two defining stars of this era finally teaming up will continue to generate attention.

Of course, a return to Los Angeles still remains the most realistic outcome. The Lakers still offer James familiarity, championship expectations, and the opportunity to continue playing alongside his son, Bronny James.

But as Windhorst explained, the biggest question now is not whether the Lakers want James back. It is whether both sides can align on a timeline quickly enough to avoid a difficult cap-related decision once free agency officially opens.
