Jonathan Kuminga Promised to Play Hefty Minutes Next to Luka Doncic
After a bumpy 2025 season with the Golden State Warriors, forward Jonathan Kuminga could now see active game time thanks to Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. A reportedly rocky relationship with Warriors head coach Steve Kerr led to Kuminga being traded to the Atlanta Hawks. However, the Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option. The 2022 NBA champion looks to find a place with the Lakers.
Now an unrestricted free agent, Pelinka has his eyes set on the young forward. According to several reports, the GM has pitched an offer to Kuminga. The pitch offered him quality minutes as a wing for Luka Doncic, per ESPN.
"(Jonathan Kuminga) met virtually with Rob Pelinka and JJ Redick, who pitched him of being a high-minutes wing next to Luka in a spacious on-court environment conducive to his skill set."
While the offer sounds appealing, NBA insider Anthony Slater reports Kuminga remains unenticed despite the Lakers' aggressive pursuit. But given how the Lakers are the most active team trying to pursue him, it might be best if the forward ponders it. Slater posted his thoughts on X.
"The Lakers are in the most active pursuit of unrestricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, but have not yet made an enticing enough offer for him to commit, per sources."
With Doncic becoming the cornerstone player for the Lakers' roster build, Kuminga's athleticism and dynamic scoring abilities could come in handy. With Kuminga averaging 12.5 ppg, Doncic and the team could unlock his potential.
Kuminga could be offered a two-year $20 million deal, per Broderick Turner in the LA Times. However, considering that he previously signed a two-year $46.8 million contract with the Warriors, he is likely to ask for more. Kuminga is only 23 years old, with a lot of game left in the dynamic forward.
With Kuminga being a free agent, there is potential for a is a particular team-up that is cause for excitement.
Jonathan Kuminga Potentially Teaming Up With LeBron James
LeBron James, after declining the Lakers' offer, is now the market's biggest prize. With his history with the team, fans want to see LeBron join the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cleveland is James' hometown. The Cavs are where he began his career. It's only fitting that LeBron were to end his career where it all started. Apparently, the Cavs organization feels the same way, as NBA insider Shams Charania reported that they are actively pursuing the King this summer.
Charania noted that Cavs star Donovan Mitchell is actively assisting the organization in making this possible. The insider also mentioned that Cleveland will attempt to make an offer to Jonathan Kuminga.
"Donovan Mitchell, I'm told, has been very active in a significant part of the conversations the Cavs officials have been having this summer on upgrading the roster. Yes, that includes the pursuit of LeBron James ... Another wing as well that the Cavs have pursued here in free agency is Jonathan Kuminga."
If the Cavs secure James, this could be an ideal situation for Kuminga. While the Lakers could still be considered contenders in the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference is notoriously less stacked in terms of talent.
Plus, the chance to play next to the King while potentially competing for the NBA championship sounds too good for him to pass up. Kuminga might be faced with a difficult decision between the two teams in the near future.
