Philadelphia 76ers legend Charles Barkley was not in attendance as pop sensation Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce got married on July 3. While Swift and Kelce are both often spotted courtside at NBA games, that did nothing to encourage Barkley to attend their wedding. He had other important things to do.
The couple held their wedding at Madison Square Garden, a fitting location for the ceremony after Swift's favorite team, the New York Knicks, won the 2026 NBA championship. MSG is the Knicks' home arena. During an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia, the 11-time All-Star spoke about why he declined the invitation.
"I don't go to weddings. But I did get an invite, and I politely declined... I love Travis and Jason (Kelce), and I've only met Taylor one time, " he said during the interview. "Yeah, I did get an invite, but I said, 'Hey, you know what? That's just too much. I just want to hang out and play golf. I don't want to dress up and all that other stuff.' But I appreciate the invitation. It was pretty special."
While Barkley was off hitting the greens according to the NBC interview, Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony. Given how MSG is a sports arena, Swift and Kelce reportedly had custom giant drapes surrounding the arena to give their 1,000 guests that intimate feel.
The newlyweds reportedly invited the Knicks' starting five to the ceremony. However, the only prominent NBA figures spotted at the event were Kobe Bryant's wife, Vanessa Bryant, and his daughter, Natalie Bryant.
A couple of days after the wedding, Barkley week took another turn. He was in for a shock, as the Boston Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the Sixers.
Charles Barkley Surprised by Jaylen Brown Trade
Now that we're in the NBA offseason, teams typically use this time to regroup and restructure their rosters. The Celtics surprisingly traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and several draft picks.
Charles Barkley couldn't believe it at first. He thought that it was fake news. But when he learned that the trade was real, he was stunned.
"This can't be a true story. You know, there's so much fake stuff on the internet. Now I'm like, 'No, they didn't trade (Jaylen Brown) to the Sixers. ... They gave up Paul George and some draft picks.' I said, 'The Sixers just got away with murder, man.'"
With Paul George's declining productivity and 36 years of age, one can see Barkley's concern. The aging forward averaged 17.3 ppg in 2025. In contrast, Brown has been the anchor that the Celtics needed with star forward Jayson Tatum injured for almost a whole year. 29-year-old Brown averaged 28.7 ppg in the regular season and was named an All-Star in 2025.
"There's no way, rationally, you can think that was a good trade. Giving up an aging guy to a guy who just probably was the MVP for the first half of the season. It's crazy."
While Barkley was stunned at the trade, the Sixers are getting a more active star to help them win. There's also the concern about whether JB will get along with his new co-stars, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but his presence does give the Sixers a better title shot.
