Giannis Antetokounmpo Reacts to LeBron James Potentially Joining the Heat
LeBron James rocked the NBA world last week when he announced that he would no longer play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miami Heat have emerged as frontrunners to land the four-time MVP. But it’s Miami’s name that has the rest of the league on alert, thanks to the possibility of pairing James with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Twitch Streamer N3on, who was in Greece with Giannis, mentioned the possibility of a Giannis-LeBron pairing while touring the Greek Freak's hometown together. Giannis reacted and decided to keep it low-key.
Giannis, who joined the Heat from Milwaukee earlier this summer, gave the streamer a shoulder shrug.
N3on then changed the subject and asked Antetokounmpo who he considers the NBA GOAT. While Giannis didn’t reveal much about the possibility of James joining the Heat, he had no hesitation in naming LeBron as his personal GOAT. He added that while most people would pick Michael Jordan, his choice has always been the King.
"I'll say, you can't compare eras, but the person that I like to watch a lot is LeBron James," Antetokounmpo said. "I like to watch him. But obviously (there's) Michael Jordan. It's one of two (things). Once you get to that level, who cares? It's LeBron or MJ. Some people will say LeBron, some people will say MJ."
According to several reports, the Heat are actively pursuing James this summer. The goal is to pair him with Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo to form a new Big Three and make another championship push. On top of that, there’s already plenty of history between James and the franchise.
James cemented his legacy in Miami by winning two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 as part of the famed Big Three alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. However, reports have also suggested that he told his agent, Rich Paul, to entertain offers from interested teams. That means James has yet to decide where he’ll play next season.
LeBron James Will Let Rich Paul Handle NBA Team Offers
The speculation and discussions are not putting James in a hurry to announce his next team. He’s been in the league for 23 years, and ahead of what could very likely be his final season, he wants to take his time, assess his options, and join a franchise that appears most ready to compete for a title.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, James has no intention of engaging in team meetings just yet. Haynes also said that LeBron would rather let his agent, Rich Paul, handle business for now until an offer piques his interest.
"As of right now, there are no plans for LeBron to engage in any meetings to allow teams to pitch him on the idea of coming to their prospective teams," Haynes said.
"His agent, Rich Paul, is doing all the background work. He's talking with teams, and then he, in return, will relay all the intel and data to LeBron James, in which LeBron will make a decision."
The top three teams currently predicted to be James’ next destination are the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat. However, the Timberwolves have also emerged as contenders in recent days and are reportedly preparing major moves to bring the King to Minneapolis. Based on the way James is handling his free agency, though, it’s safe to say that everything remains up in the air for now.
