There have been a lot of talks regarding where LeBron James will end up next season. James is currently the biggest free agent in the market, and teams are aggressively trying to recruit him. While many teams are interested in signing him, many fans want to see LeBron make a homecoming in Cleveland. Finishing his career in his hometown seems like the most fitting way to go.

However, sports analyst Colin Cowherd has some concerns regarding James' potential return to Cleveland. While there's no denying that LeBron is still a strong player despite soon turning 42 years old, Cowherd believes that he could slow the Cavs down. With an aging James on the team, the team could become slower in terms of tempo, greatly affecting how Cleveland could keep up with other strong teams.

"LeBron (James) will make you the worst defensive team," Cowherd said. "Slowest player in the NBA last year was James Harden. He's a Cav. You know the second slowest player? LeBron James, if he goes to Cleveland. They'll be the worst team in terms defensively, and they weren't very good last year, even with rim protection."

Despite the criticism regarding James' declining swiftness on the hardwood, Cowherd also believes that he is still capable of helping the Cavs in clutch situations.

"Now, will LeBron make you better in close games? Yes," Cowherd added. "But LeBron will absolutely make you slower. Slow is not what you need in the NBA. Youth, speed, and athleticism is."

Despite Cowherd's concerns, James averaged the most fastbreak points during the 2025-26 season. Ranking in first place, James averaged 5.7 fastbreak points per game.

Despite being 41 years old and navigating one of the lowest average walking and running speeds in the league, James continues to dominate the open floor. LeBron has transitioned into being more selective when utilizing his bursts of speed. At his age, he'd rather not waste any unnecessary energy and save it for when it matters most in a game.

LeBron James is Waiting For the Best Case Scenario Amid Free Agency Rumors

There have been several speculations as to where LeBron James could end up next season. Some believe he's going back home to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Others think he's shacking up with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Then there's the possibility of forming a superteam with the Philadelphia 76ers. So many scenarios, yet nothing has come to fruition.

James' agent, Rich Paul, recently provided an update regarding his client's free agency situation. While LeBron has yet to make a decision, Paul said that he's mulling over which would be the most beneficial situation for him.

"I think when you have a player like (LeBron James), he unlocks something on one of all 30 teams," Paul said. "The team he chooses, I don't know yet. There's a seriousness that comes with this. There's a competitiveness that comes. We know how hard it is to win championships. ... We're not worried about anybody's opinion or anything like that. He's going to make the best decision for himself."

As of July, five teams have emerged as the frontrunners in the LeBron James sweepstakes. These teams include the 76ers, Cavs, Warriors, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Previous reports suggest that Paul was left in charge of talking to these five teams before James would come up with a decision.
