LeBron James Could Massively Impact Warriors' Draft Plans, Per Insider

With LeBron James entering unrestricted free agency, several teams are expected to try to woo him. Among those teams are the Golden State Warriors, who are desperately trying to open Stephen Curry's title window.

At this stage, only a top-shelf superstar acquisition like James can help the Warriors. If they're serious about pursuing that goal, it could affect what they do with their 2026 first-round pick, according to journalist Peter O'Keefe.

"I just have a hard time believing that the Warriors would think 'we're gonna sign LeBron James,'" O'Keefe said. "And we're also gonna draft Nate Ament or another prospect who is gonna take two years before he becomes a really valuable player to winning in the NBA."

O'Keefe later added that with this mentality, Yaxel Lendeborg is a more attractive prospect.

A pairing of James and Curry does not have the luxury of time. James will turn 42 in December, and Curry is already 38. Given their respective ages, waiting for a player to develop is out of the question.

Lendeborg is the oldest prospect projected to be taken in the lottery. He is currently 23 years old, but will turn 24 in September, before his rookie season even fully begins.

He's played three years of Division I college basketball, spending his first two years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and his third year at Michigan.

At UAB, he averaged a double-double with 15.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. At Michigan, he posted marginally lower scoring at 15.1 while his rebounding dipped to 6.8 per game.

Despite that dip in rebounding, he still looks to be one of the more NBA-ready prospects in this year's crop of rookies. He's also someone who fits the modern NBA, capable of stretching the floor and hitting perimeter shots at 6-foot-9.

For a team that wants LeBron James, a floor-spacing big man is a great fit. James is a strong attacker who draws defenses in when he drives. He also has great vision and can find teammates who are spotting up or cutting from the weak side.

Of course, all this is hypothetical, as the Warriors still need to actually acquire James.

Stephen Curry to have a meeting with LeBron James this summer

The Golden State Warriors have been looking for a star to pair with Curry for a while now. Names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and Kevin Durant have been linked to them in the past, aside from LeBron James.

It would seem, though, that among all these stars, Curry is personally getting involved with pursuing James.

According to league insider Brett Siegel, Curry himself plans to meet with James ahead of the offseason. The idea, of course, is that the Warriors star himself will pitch the idea of playing together.

James and Curry's relationship has developed over the years. From bitter rivals, the two have become friends and even teammates. They played together on Team USA at the past Olympics, where they brought home gold alongside a group of other superstars.

For this pairing to actually happen, though, James will need to make a huge financial sacrifice. That's because the Warriors do not have the cap space to offer him anywhere near the $50 million per season he's projected to earn on his next contract.

Whether James ultimately becomes available or not, his name is already influencing conversations across the league. For the Warriors, even the possibility of pairing him with Curry may be enough to reshape their draft-night strategy and offseason plans.
