Lakers Leaning Toward Another LeBron James-Luka Doncic Partnership Amid $20M Decision, Per Reports

One of the biggest questions in the NBA right now concerns the Los Angeles Lakers. After losing in the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, many are wondering what direction the organization will take with its roster. While LeBron James opted to test free agency this year, it appears the Lakers would still welcome him back if he decides to run it back.
According to a recent report by NBA insider Sean Deveney, the Lakers would ideally like to keep most of their current roster intact while adding another player. Rumors suggest the team is willing to pay free agent Tobias Harris $20 million.
"The Lakers are interested in running last year’s team back, while just targeting a $20M/year player this offseason to help Luka and LeBron," Deveney reported.
While it's ideal for the Lakers to keep James, it's easier said than done. There have been reports that the Lakers intend to offer Austin Reaves a five-year contract worth $240 million. If they end up doing so, they won't have enough cap space to pay LeBron.
King James made it clear that he's only willing to play for a team that could pay him a huge sum. While he didn't disclose the amount he wants, James' asking fee stems from his belief that he should be treated with respect for his contributions to the league.
As of this writing, it's still unclear which direction James is headed. Despite analysts predicting that he might stay in LA, reports of Stephen Curry planning to talk to the 41-year-old have turned a lot of heads. Curry and the Golden State Warriors are interested in recruiting James. However, it's easier said than done.
The best offer the Warriors can come up with is their Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, which offers approximately $15 million. It may not be up to James' standards, but if Curry can muster a good argument on why he should join the Warriors, then Bron going to the Bay Area is a huge possibility.
NBA insider reveals LeBron James is likely to stay in LA
We're already nearing the middle of June, which means we're also getting closer to LeBron James' decision regarding his future. James previously stated that he intends to share his decision by late June or early July.
Many fans want to see him run it back with the Cleveland Cavaliers, as a fitting ending to his career. Meanwhile, others are excited with the idea of James teaming up with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
However, it seems that more signs are pointing towards James staying in LA. According to a recent report by NBA insider Marc Spears, a close friend of LeBron's told Spears that LeBron plans to stay with the Lakers.
"Somebody that's close to (LeBron James) suggested to me that he was staying in LA," Spears said on 95.7 The Game.
Readers should take this information with a grain of salt. Nothing will officially be confirmed until we hear from the horse's mouth. For now, all we can do is wait for James to make his decision.
