Things are shaking up for the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James declared on Tuesday that he no longer intends to play for the Lakers and will join another team next season, ending an eight-year association with the franchise. Another player set to test free agency this offseason is Japanese forward Rui Hachimura. What wasn't certain was whether he would return. But now, the answer seems clear.
When Hachimura was traded to the Lakers in 2023, he immediately became an asset to the team. His size strengthened the frontcourt, and he also proved to be a reliable shooter from both the mid-range and beyond the arc. That led the Lakers to sign him to a three-year, $51 million contract the following offseason. However, it now appears the Lakers are ready to move on from Rui, as reports suggest the team has found his replacement.
"The league believes Sandro Mamukelashvili is headed to the Lakers," league insider Brian Windhorst said on NBA Today. "That’s what people in the league believe. And he would basically replace Rui Hachimura."
Looking at how both Hachimura and Mamukelashvili performed last season, their numbers are almost identical. Playing for the Toronto Raptors, Mamukelashvili averaged 11.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. Meanwhile, Rui put up 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds.
Based on the statistics, it makes sense why the Lakers view Mamukelashvili as a replacement for Hachimura. However, Rui is a better shooter. Despite the former Raptors forward shooting a much higher field goal percentage of 52.3% compared to Rui's 51.4%, the former Lakers forward has more range, shooting 44.3% from beyond the arc.
It will all come down to the Lakers' preference. But if money is a concern for the team, then acquiring Mamukelashvili makes sense. He previously earned $2.63 million, which is a significant drop compared to Hachimura's $18.2 million salary last season. The Lakers would have more financial flexibility to acquire additional players to surround Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves and fill the hole left by James.
NBA Insider Urges All Teams to Make Offers to LeBron James
LeBron James is the biggest free agent on the market right now. Despite rumors suggesting he could join the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, or Miami Heat, a recent report stated that James instructed his agent, Rich Paul, to entertain offers from all teams interested in signing him this summer.
With that in mind, Windhorst urged all NBA teams to shoot their shot with the King. During a recent episode of NBA Today, he suggested that James is entering free agency with an open mind, meaning every team has a chance to recruit LeBron.
"If you want LeBron, you've got to go make a move," Windhorst said. "I don't mean bringing LeBron in. ... If you want LeBron James' attention, make a move. Make a move to improve your team, and then you get his attention."
As of now, the Cavs, Heat, and Warriors remain the frontrunners in the LeBron sweepstakes. The Minnesota Timberwolves were also reported to have an outside chance of signing the four-time MVP. However, given the new circumstances, LeBron's future remains as open as ever.
