LeBron James has decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers after spending eight seasons with the iconic franchise. The journey didn't end on a high of course, with the Lakers getting swept 4-0 in the West Semi-Finals by the OKC Thunder. But it shouldn't take anything away from his legacy in purple and gold, as stated by one of the organization's biggest stars ever.
Six-time MVP winner Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took to social media to address the mixed emotions among fans reacting to James' exit. Some Lakers fans were hoping he would re-sign and help Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves chase a championship. But Kareem believes they should simply wish the King well as he embarks on what is most likely the final chapter of his NBA career.
"LeBron was a winner on and off the court, and Lakers fans should appreciate his performance for the last 8 years," Kareem wrote on X. "If LeBron goes home to Cleveland, it won’t matter if they win the world championship or not because it’s Hometown fans will get their opportunity to say their goodbyes to one of the greatest ever."
James' time as a Laker cannot be defined by his failure to win more than one ring. Yes, many expected him to lead the Lakers to more championships after the 2019-20 title. But he almost single-handedly carried the team, with his fellow star Anthony Davis missing significant time through injury and Doncic arriving only in 2025.
Personally, he also had monumental moments in a Lakers uniform, including passing Abdul-Jabbar's 38,387 career points in 2022 to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer. He also teamed up with his son, Bronny James, becoming the first father-son duo to play together in the league.
As of this writing, James is rumored to be considering one of three teams: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Miami Heat, with outside rumors also linking the Minnesota Timberwolves to a surprise move. Many are looking forward to LeBron's potential homecoming in Cleveland, as it would be a fitting final chapter, ending his career where it all started.
However, so far, all signs point toward James teaming up with Stephen Curry and the Warriors. Rumors suggest that Golden State is aggressively pursuing LeBron this summer. Draymond Green recently declined his $27 million player option, leading many to believe it was the veteran forward's way of helping the Warriors recruit the King.
There have also been reports that the Warriors are targeting Anthony Davis in a trade scenario to entice LeBron into joining the team. But The Athletic reported that the Wizards are unwilling to trade their big man away.
NBA insider Dave McMenamin reported that James instructed his agent, Rich Paul, to entertain offers from any team interested in signing him. With that said, it might be a while longer before the King makes his final decision.
LeBron James Shows Appreciation to the Lakers
Before LeBron James made his official exit from the Los Angeles Lakers, there had been several rumors of him having a strained relationship with the team's front office. Many reports previously suggested that it's because of that rift that James didn't opt to extend his contract with the Lakers.
Despite the suggested hostility between both parties, it seems that both James and the Lakers have ended their relationship on good terms. LA recently posted a message on social media, thanking the King for all of his contributions.
"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," Lakers governor Jeanie Buss wrote. "We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers - including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.
"We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."
James then reposted Buss' message on X and responded with heartwarming words.
"No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the 💜💛 while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint. 🙏🏾🫡👑," James responded.
Given the situation, all eyes are now locked on the King. Many are curious to see which team James will ultimately select as his new home for next season.
