Giannis Antetokounmpo Reflects on Monaco GP Honor Amid Uncertain Bucks Future

Giannis Antetokounmpo, 4,500 miles away from Milwaukee, does not have to worry about his NBA future at the moment. He's enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine in Monaco, where he spent his Sunday watching the iconic Monaco Grand Prix. And he wasn't just a spectator, but someone who was given a huge honor during the race weekend.
Giannis was asked to wave the chequered flag, which Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli took first, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar.
F1's official account posted the clip of the two-time NBA MVP waving the flag on Instagram. In the short video, he could be seen beaming from ear to ear before waving the flag that signifies the end of the race.
Later, Giannis himself commented on the clip, saying, "What an honor!!! I had so much fun, thank you."
Giannis was also seen hanging out with Mercedes' team principal Toto Wolff, one of the most popular faces in the paddock.
Giannis' F1 escapade comes at a time when he is at the center of what promises to be an exciting and uncertain NBA offseason. The Greek Freak, who won the 2021 championship with the Milwaukee Bucks, has been strongly linked with a move away from the franchise.
Teams that are linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo
Naturally, the possibility of a two-time MVP still in his prime being available has raised the interest of several teams across both the Eastern and Western Conferences.
Initially, reports in February stated that he wanted to be traded to the New York Knicks. A deal never materialized, and since then, as New York has moved on to reach the NBA Finals, the list of teams linked to him has continued to grow.
Now, the Miami Heat are one of the frontrunners, largely because Giannis has reportedly expressed a preference to remain in the Eastern Conference and has described Miami as a "beautiful" city. From the team's perspective, they also have the assets needed to make a deal happen.
Miami could build a trade package around players such as Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Tyler Herro in an effort to acquire Giannis.
Aside from the Heat, though, the Boston Celtics have also emerged as a possible destination for Giannis. Two-time All-NBA Second Team member Jaylen Brown is being viewed as a possible trade piece, and in terms of superstar talent, he might be the best available on the market for the Bucks.
A third team has also emerged as a possible landing spot: the Orlando Magic. Following Orlando's hiring of Sean Sweeney as their next coach, rumors about a Giannis trade intensified.
Sweeney was an assistant for the Bucks from 2014-15 to the 2017-18 season. He and Giannis have some familiarity, which could play into the Greek Freak's next destination.
Some Western Conference teams are also being linked to Antetokounmpo. The Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Portland Trail Blazers are all in the rumor mill.
Giannis is not yet an unrestricted free agent. As such, the Bucks would have full control over his destination if they decide to trade him this summer. However, he does hold a player option for the 2027-28 season. If he is unhappy with his new situation, he could decline that option and enter unrestricted free agency, giving him the freedom to choose his next team.
That possibility is something interested teams must consider, as they could ultimately be trading significant assets for what amounts to a one-year rental.
