"It Would Have Been a Massacre": NBA Legend Delivers Brutal Verdict on Victor Wembanyama vs Hakeem Olajuwon Debate

Victor Wembanyama's rapid rise has already sparked comparisons to some of the greatest big men in NBA history. But former Houston Rockets guard Vernon Maxwell believes one all-time legend would have exposed the San Antonio Spurs star in a hypothetical matchup.

Maxwell, who won two NBA championships alongside Olajuwon in Houston, recently weighed in on the growing Wembanyama-versus-Olajuwon debate. His verdict left little room for interpretation.

"(Victor Wembanyama) wouldn’t be able to guard (Hakeem Olajuwon)," Vernon Maxwell said if Wembanyama and Olajuwon faced each other. " Dream would be falling away from all that 7’4” shit. He wouldn’t be able to guard Dream; Dream just had too much. … It would have been a massacre."

Maxwell's comments are particularly interesting because Wembanyama's early résumé compares favorably with Olajuwon's. Through three NBA seasons, the Spurs star has already won Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, earned two All-Star selections, one All-NBA First Team nod, and two All-Defensive First Team honors.

Statistically, Wembanyama has also been on a historic trajectory. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks as a rookie before raising those numbers over the next two seasons. By Year 3, he had become the youngest Defensive Player of the Year winner in league history while finishing third in MVP voting.

Olajuwon was outstanding early in his own career, averaging more than 20 points and 11 rebounds in each of his first three seasons while earning All-Star, All-NBA, and All-Defensive recognition. However, Maxwell's argument is less about accolades and more about style. As Olajuwon's former teammate, he believes the Hall of Famer's footwork, post moves, and offensive versatility would have created matchup problems that even Wembanyama's unprecedented size could not solve.

Can Victor Wembanyama Elevate His Status With an MVP Award Next Season?

Whether Maxwell is right or wrong about the hypothetical matchup, Wembanyama's future remains incredibly bright. The Spurs star has already established himself as one of the league's most impactful players, but an MVP award and an NBA championship remain the two biggest milestones missing from his résumé.

NBA insider Tim Legler believes that Wembanyama could win the MVP award as soon as next season.

"I think Wemby is setting the stage," former NBA player turned analyst Tim Legler said on 'The Draymond Green Show'.

"He is setting the stage for next season … I think Weby's positioned himself to be that guy because the impact is dramatic. More and more people are now aware of him and are watching him every night," he added.

Wembanyama finished third in MVP voting this season while leading one of the league's most dramatic turnarounds. Between his Defensive Player of the Year campaign, his impact on both ends of the floor, and the Spurs' deep playoff run, many around the league believe he is already knocking on the door of his first MVP award.

If Wembanyama can build on a season that already produced a Defensive Player of the Year award, a Finals appearance, and a third-place MVP finish, it's easy to understand why analysts believe the league's top individual honor could be next. Whether or not he would survive a matchup with Olajuwon in Maxwell's eyes, his climb toward all-time greatness is still only getting started.
