For what is likely the final time in his NBA career, LeBron James is changing teams. Earlier this week, he informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would be joining a new team, putting the rest of the league on alert. Leading up to his decision to test free agency, much of the NBA world remained unaware of his thought process. Now, however, fans have been given a glimpse into his mindset through his agent, Rich Paul.

Paul shared some of the conversations that he had with James and the Lakers front office on 'Game Over,' his podcast with Max Kellerman, who specifically wanted to know if the King's agent had conversations with the President and General Manager of the Lakers, Rob Pelinka.

"Yeah. So Rob and I, we talked the first day that they can talk to their own player," Paul shared. "I talked to him and JJ, we talked, and we've had cordial conversations throughout."

Paul said they were trying to figure things out and get them aligned, though he did not dive into the specifics. Then the agent shared that James himself decided there didn't need to be a meeting among the involved parties.

"There didn't need to be one," Paul replied to Kellerman's next question about a potential offer. "It wasn't a place where we needed to. They wanted to bring him back, obviously. But, there didn't need to be one, and I didn't want to waste anyone's time."

Before news that James would become a free agent, it was widely believed he would return to the Lakers. Earlier reports stated that both sides were keeping in touch, as the four-time MVP geared up for year 24 in the league.

However, with time, it became clear that there were no new developments. The Lakers began focusing on building the team around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, whereas James shifted focus to deciding where he will play next.

What Could Be Next for LeBron James?

Fans have learned two things about what to expect from James this summer. First, he won't return to the Los Angeles Lakers. Second, he intends to continue his NBA career, putting the retirement rumors to rest.

NBA Insider Shams Charania said that the 41-year-old will be returning for a 24th season, which now opens a brand new question. If he's not returning to LA, where would he play?

James can now negotiate with all the other teams in the league. However, it's safe to assume that he won't.

Teams that aren't considered contenders for next season can likely be ruled out. If a front office wants to pursue James, it will likely need to have, at the very least, a playoff-ready roster.

That leaves only a handful of realistic destinations. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat both have a historical connection with James and are built for a postseason run. Unsurprisingly, both have been linked to him once again.

Then there's the Golden State Warriors. Whether their roster is capable of making a deep playoff run is debatable, given its health and depth concerns. However, they do have star power and some financial flexibility.

If the Warriors want to acquire James, though, their pitch can't simply be that they have another superstar to pair with him.

This will likely be the final time James changes teams in his storied career. Chances are, it will be to a franchise that gives him the best opportunity to win one more championship before hanging up his sneakers.
